but Fantina's never been around, right?

I've now become a traveling Trainer, just like you!

And so, I regret to say that gives me no other choice

but to leave the Hearthome Gym en vacances!

ASH: You're a traveling Trainer?

DAWN: En vacances?

MEOWTH: So she's a Top Coordinator and a Gym Leader.

JAMES: Curious!

The job description does bring another to mind.

JESSIE: Well, it's our job to take that multitasker out!

I've got it! Here's the deal!

YANMEGA: [PROUD]

MEOWTH: You want to swipe that Mismagius, right?

JESSIE: Don't be so crude!

What I want are the training techniques of a Top Coordinator!

JAMES: How do you swipe those?

JESSIE: Easy! Training techniques are quite swipe-able!

I'll share them with Yanmega

and prepare myself for the joys of a life of victory!

YANMEGA: [PLEASED]

JAMES: It sounds good in theory,

but simply swiping someone's style

may mean some horrifically hard work.

MEOWTH: I hate horrific.

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ASH: But Fantina,

I don't get why you don't go back to your Gym!

ASH: I'm pretty sure there are lots of people

who'd want to challenge you.

ASH: And that includes me!

ASH: Fantina?

JESSIE: Coming through!

JESSIE: I do declare!

Your beauty is only surpassed by your top-tier talent!

FANTINA: And you are?

JESSIE: I am! And that's none other than

the beautifully busy traveling reporter Jessedia!

JESSIE: My big scoop for today is all about Fantina

and her mountain of magnificent Pokémon!

JESSIE: So now, if you'll just work with me

by looking into the camera and making media magic!

JAMES: First we'll film her while strutting her stuff,

then show it to Yanmega!

MEOWTH: Okay, but I wish she'd lose those glasses!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

FANTINA: I'm sorry, but that's impossible! I'm training now.

JESSIE, MEOWTH, JAMES: Oh, great!

ASH: That doesn't make any sense!

Come on, you're a Gym Leader! And a Top Coordinator!

PIKACHU: [CONFUSED]

DAWN: That sounds strange to me, too.

Now what would you need to be training for?

PIPLUP: [CONFUSED]

ZOEY: Well, maybe if you told everyone

the same story that you told me a while ago, it would help!

I really doubt that they're going to get it if you don't.

FANTINA: I guess you're right!

FANTINA: One day, I had a sort of revelation!

I wanted to become much stronger.

Stronger for every challenger who came to the Hearthome Gym

with the desire to battle me! Now how could I resist that?

FANTINA: As a Pokémon Trainer,

I had to put in long hours studying.

FANTINA: And with a bit of luck,

I was able to become Top Coordinator!

FANTINA: Everyone was generous

with their praises for my battling technique.

FANTINA: and the Hearthome Gym was able to open

with moi as its Leader!

FANTINA: The Hearthome Gym specializes in

Ghost-type Pokémon.

FANTINA: I faced off against anyone

and everyone who came to challenge me!

I fought many, many battles.

FANTINA: Some of my challengers, even after they failed,

would keep training with fierce determination,

and then return for a rematch.

FANTINA: Seeing them all again,

I still felt I had to win, no matter what!

BROCK: Of course!

The truly dedicated Trainers who wouldn't accept defeat

the first time around

were always nearest and dearest to my heart.

FANTINA: Alors! You understand my feelings!

BROCK: Oui.

ASH: You see, Brock used to be Gym Leader

over at Pewter Gym in Kanto!

FANTINA: Wow! Then there's no doubt

you understand exactly what I mean!

Even Gym Leaders are always in training!

They want to get stronger, too!

BROCK: You're so right!

FANTINA: So I gave it a lot of thought, and after a while,

it dawned upon me that was the best part

of Hearthome Gym battles by far!

ZOEY: And that's it!

Fantina's been working hard as she can as a Trainer, like us!

ZOEY: Doing all the same things we do,

like catching Pokémon and battling

and gaining all that experience!

FANTINA: Bien sur!

Which finally led me to realize one more thing.

FANTINA: I had to create a new style of battling!

One that would combine the beauty of competition

with the ferocity of the b*ttlefield!

ASH: A new battle style.

DAWN: So have you been able to

come up with your new battling style yet?

FANTINA: No, not quite yet, ma chérie.

But one step at a time slow and steady!

BROCK: Amazing.

To become a Gym Leader is not the Trainer's goal.

But your desire to level up even now you know,

people would do well to start following your example!

ASH: I've got to tell you,

after hearing your awesome story,

I've just got to challenge you to a battle, you know?

PIKACHU: [EAGER]

DAWN: Me too! You've inspired me as well to give it my best sh*t!

PIPLUP: [EAGER]

JESSIE: Well, well, there's nothing more interesting than

listening to the dreams of a few inspired Twerps.

What I'm really trying to say here is: how about a battle?

JAMES: I must say,

isn't Jessie's decent discourse a bit much?

MEOWTH: Don't let it fool you!

Jess is sucking up because she wants

to film her rocking the house!

WOBBUFFET: [IMPRESSED]

FANTINA: When traveling Trainers meet on the road,

their first words are, "Let's battle!"

And since you and I fit that description to a tee,

I accept your challenge!

ASH: Well, all right!

PIKACHU: [THRILLED]

FANTINA: But since my Pokémon are feeling très fatigué,

I'm afraid I'll only be able to battle with one of you!

ASH, DAWN: Right!

ASH: So let's figure this out!

DAWN: I happen to have just the thing

to decide which one of us battles her.

ASH: Great idea! It's Coin Toss time!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

DAWN, PIPLUP: [DISAPPOINTED]

DAWN: Okay, why?

Why did I have to be so dumb that I'd go and pick heads?

ZOEY: Come on, it's just a game! Win a few and you lose a few.

BROCK: After all those things Fantina said,

it's obvious Ghost-type Pokémon

are the Hearthome Gym's specialty!

ZOEY: Yeah! And she's an expert

at using those tricky skills of hers!

DAWN: No need to worry, right?

PIPLUP: [AFFIRMATIVE]

FANTINA: All right,

please be so kind as to share with us your rules!

ASH: I'd like a three-on-three!

And the battle's over

if all three of one side's Pokémon can't continue!

FANTINA: Excellente!

And we both may substitute Pokémon!

ASH: Great!

PIKACHU: [ENTHUSIASTIC]

BROCK: She's allowing Pokémon substitutions!

You know, it's just like a Trainer's battle!

DAWN: You're right!

I guess those sorts of things aren't usually allowed

when you're actually challenging a Gym Leader!

ASH: Dawn, how about doing another Coin Toss?

We've got to decide who goes first!

DAWN: You've got it!

PIPLUP: [SURPRISED]

DAWN: Okay then, you two, call it quickly!

ASH: All right, then I call tails!

FANTINA: Then of course I call heads!

DAWN: I've got it! Ready? Coin Toss!

DAWN: It's heads!

FANTINA: Ooh la la! And that means I go first!

ASH: Right!

JESSIE: Production note!

Focus on the Leader

and don't give that tottering Twerp any airtime!

JAMES: Duly noted!

ASH: Whoa, she's holding a Poké Ball!

That's got to mean Mismagius isn't going to go first.

PIKACHU: [WARY]

ASH: After spending all those hours practicing with Dawn,

I know how Contest Battles go.

ASH: But I'm just not sure how to start! It's all or nothing.

Let's do it!

ASH: Okay, Buizel, I choose you!

BUIZEL: [APPEARING]

FANTINA: Alors Drifloon! Battle position, vite!

DRIFLOON: [APPEARING]

ASH: Drifloon!

FANTINA: I've raised this darling little one

since it was a baby Pokémon!

ASH: Buizel!

Since you never know what it's going to do, be careful, okay?

BUIZEL: [AFFIRMATIVE]

FANTINA: Then let's begin! Drifloon, use Ominous Wind!

DRIFLOON: [OMINOUS WIND MOVE]

ASH: Quick, use Water g*n!

BUIZEL: [WATER g*n MOVE]

DRIFLOON: [EFFORT]

DRIFLOON, BUIZEL: [PROUD]

DAWN: How did Drifloon dodge that?

BROCK: Buizel's counterattack was timed well, but...

ZOEY: Brock, just wait.

Fantina's just getting warmed up!

DRIFLOON: [CONFIDENT]

BUIZEL: [STRUGGLING]

ASH: Whoa, Buizel's surrounded by wind!

PIKACHU, PIPLUP: [ENCOURAGING]

BROCK: Wow, she doesn't miss a trick!

ZOEY: She's really living up to her position

as Gym Leader, isn't she?

Who knew a Drifloon could do something like that?

DAWN: She's choosing all her moves perfectly.

DAWN: I'm just hoping Ash and Buizel

don't get too caught up in the heat of the battle!

PIPLUP: [ENCOURAGING]

JESSIE: Keep that itchy trigger finger nice and itchy!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ASH: All right, Buizel, use Aqua Jet!

BUIZEL: [AQUA JET MOVE]

DRIFLOON: [PAINED]

DRIFLOON: [DETERMINED]

FANTINA: Buizel, that move of yours was superbe!

But get ready for this!

FANTINA: Use Hypnosis!

DRIFLOON: [HYPNOSIS MOVE]

BUIZEL: [NERVOUS]

ASH: Buizel, wake up!

ZOEY: Unbelievable!

I never knew Hypnosis could be used like that!

BROCK: After taking a good long look at Buizel's moves,

Fantina figured out a weakness in Ash's strategy!

So after he launched that Aqua Jet.

BROCK: she threw him a change-up!

FANTINA: Alors, dear Drifloon, go and pick Buizel up!

DRIFLOON: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DRIFLOON: [EFFORT]

DAWN: But Buizel's still fast asleep!

BROCK: That Hypnosis of Drifloon's packs quite a punch

ZOEY: On top of that, Fantina's using Buizel fast asleep

to show off Drifloon's power!

FANTINA: Drifloon, use Psychic!

DRIFLOON: [PSYCHIC MOVE]

ASH: Come on, Buizel, wake up!

BUIZEL: [STARTLED] BUIZEL: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Great! Buizel, you woke up!

BUIZEL: [PROUD] / [STUNNED]

ASH: Buizel, no!

DAWN: After all that!

PIPLUP: [UPSET]

ZOEY: Looks like Buizel took quite a bit of damage

from that Ominous Wind.

ASH: Buizel, that was some great work!

ASH: Now you get yourself a good long rest!

ASH: Chimchar, let's go!

CHIMCHAR: [APPEARING]

JAMES: It's Chimmy's time to shine!

FANTINA: It is with my dear Drifloon that I will stay!

Alors, Ash, it is you who has the honor!

ASH: Okay, Chimchar! No holding back! Flamethrower!

CHIMCHAR: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

FANTINA: Plus vite, Drifloon, Psychic!

DRIFLOON: [PSYCHIC MOVE]

ASH: What happened?

FANTINA: Now, s'il vous plait, we'll take control of that!

their opponent's Pokémon's skills a lot

in Contest Battles before, but never like she does!

JESSIE: Yowslers!

JAMES: Drifloon sure knows how to fly high.

FANTINA: Now prepare for a surprise, Will-O-Wisp!

DRIFLOON: [AFFIRMATIVE]

CHIMCHAR: [WORRIED]

DAWN: Look out!

DRIFLOON: [WILL-O-WISP MOVE]

CHIMCHAR: [PAINED]

FANTINA: Now, Hypnosis!

DRIFLOON: [HYPNOSIS MOVE]

CHIMCHAR: [PAINED]

CHIMCHAR: [STRUGGLING]

ASH: No, not again!

DAWN: I can't believe it!

MEOWTH: Chimmy's napping, too!

ASH: Chimchar, return!

DAWN: Good! Ash managed to get Chimchar

back into its Poké Ball before it was too late!

BROCK: That's not as good as it looks.

BROCK: See, unlike confusion, sleep continues even when

a Pokémon returns to its Poké Ball!

ASH: Pikachu, it's you!

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: If Pikachu falls asleep, that's it! What do we do?

PIKACHU: [ENCOURAGING]

ASH: Right, Pikachu! I hear you!

You get lemons, you make lemonade!

And that's what we do best, right?

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED] FANTINA: Alors,

it's stopping the Volt Tackle!

JESSIE: I want to do that! Whatever that is!

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Yeah! Pikachu, hang on!

FANTINA: Oh! I've never seen such burning spirit!

This battle is now in your hands!

PIKACHU: [STRUGGLING]

PIKACHU: [SHOCKED]

ASH: Are you okay, Pikachu?

PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ASH: All right, Thunderbolt, let's go!

DRIFLOON: [PAINED]

ASH: That's it!

FANTINA: Oh! Your Pikachu seems so much stronger!

DAWN: Look at Pikachu go!

BROCK: Yeah! Ash can sure turn the tables!

DRIFLOON: [STRUGGLING]

FANTINA: Alors!

My Drifloon's starting to evolve!

ASH: Evolving now?

PIKACHU: [SHOCKED]

BROCK, ZOEY, DAWN, HAPPINY, GLAMEOW, PIPLUP: [SHOCKED]

DRIFBLIM: [GREETING]

FANTINA: Incroyable! My Drifloon has evolved into a Drifblim!

Vraiment incroyable!

DAWN: So that's a Drifblim.

POKEDEX: Drifblim.

The Blimp Pokémon, and the evolved form of Drifloon.

Because it travels on wind currents,

Drifblim's movements are unusual and unpredictable.

FANTINA: I'm witnessing a miracle!

Better brace yourself, Ash!

ASH: No prob! You don't have to worry about Pikachu and me!

Pikachu, Thunderbolt, let's go!

PIKACHU: [THUNDERBOLT MOVE]

FANTINA: Keep your eyes peeled! Calmly floating just like that!

DRIFBLIM: [FOCUSED]

ASH: What?

PIKACHU: [SHOCKED]

DAWN: Drifblim dodged!

ZOEY: Pikachu's Thunderbolt is too strong to take!

BROCK: But a Blimp Pokémon like Drifblim

can dodge moves like that so easily

that it almost seems like it's controlling them!

JESSIE: You get that?

JAMES: Every marvy move!

MEOWTH: That lady's got that

Top Coordinator and Gym Leader groove!

FANTINA: Now, Hypnosis!

DRIFBLIM: [CONFIDENT]

PIKACHU: [SCARED]

DRIFBLIM: [HYPNOSIS MOVE]

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

ASH: Pikachu!

PIKACHU: [STRUGGLING]

ASH: Pikachu, you've got to wake up!

ASH: That's it.

FANTINA: Oui. Looks like it.

ASH: Guess so. There's not much I can do if Chimchar

and Pikachu are both sleeping. It's over.

DAWN: Oh, Ash.

PIPLUP: [SAD]

BROCK: But you have to admit,

this battle was totally different

from anything you've ever experienced!

ASH: You're right!

I just couldn't get myself into a solid groove at all.

The more I worried about my Pokémon sleeping,

the less concentration I wound up having.

FANTINA: The thing is,

even the best of us come up short sometimes.

ASH: Well, I want to give the Hearthome Gym another sh*t!

FANTINA: I accept your challenge!

And thank you for a battle incroyable!

ASH: So we'll get to battle again?

FANTINA: First, I am going to head back to the Hearthome Gym

and do some homework with my Drifblim!

In the meantime,

you have a magnifique time out on the road!

DAWN: Fantina?

If it's possible we'd love to have a battle with you, too!

PIPLUP: [EXCITED]

FANTINA: Mais oui, ma chérie Dawn, I promise, bien sur!

DAWN: Great!

FANTINA: Meanwhile, let's all keep working,

since you can't count your Torchic

before they hatch, n'est-ce pas?

ASH, DAWN: You bet!

BROCK: Zoey, any idea what she just said?

DAWN: Wow! Your third ribbon, Zoey!

ZOEY: Yeah. Shellos really came through for me!

DAWN: Losing is something I can't afford to do!

So you're really not going to be in the Celestic Town Contest?

ZOEY: I'm going to take a pass this time.

But I'll be there cheering for you, don't worry!

DAWN: That's great, Zoey!

Hey, Ash, guess what? Zoey's going to-

PIPLUP, ZOEY, GLAMEOW: [SURPRISED]

BROCK: Ash is going over today's battle in his head

ASH: Man! Feels like my head is going to explode!

PIKACHU: [CONCERNED]

ASH: I do know that every time we got hit by that Hypnosis,

we were toast!

From now on, we're going to work night and day,

figuring out how to punch that Hypnosis right in the nose!

DAWN: And I've got to get focused on

winning that Celestic Town Contest Ribbon, you know?

So, Ash, it looks like you and I have got some work to do!

ASH: Right. Next time we're at the Hearthome Gym,

we're going to rock!

NARRATOR: A temporary setback perhaps,

following a defeat at the hands of

the amazingly skillful Gym Leader Fantina.

NARRATOR: But what matters is what Ash does with that defeat,

as he prepares to take on the Hearthome Gym once and for all!
