We are experiencing

an extraordinary time in history

The coronavirus has transformed
how we work,

it's changed how we interact
with family and friends,

and, of course,
it's dramatically affected

how we fall in love.

So how are we gonna make
a romantic dating show

during times like these?

Well, it took a lot of work,
a lot of patience,

and a whole lot of testing.

'Cause you know
that if there is a way

for our Bachelorette Clare
to find her soul mate,

even during these
most troubling times,

well, we're gonna do
everything we can

to make it happen.

Clare's journey to find love
is already totally different

from any other season ever.

As you can see, I'm not
at the usual Bachelor mansion.

In fact,
I'm not even in Los Angeles.

So where are we,
and how did we get here?

Well, let's take a look back
at what happened

when we began this journey
with Clare many months ago

and how we did
everything we could

to make this beautiful place
COVID-free

and, hopefully, full of love.

The coronavirus
is now confirmed

to be in almost every state.

Here's what we know right now:

the entire state of California
ordered to stay at home.

That's 40 million people.

[dramatic music]

We were gonna start filming
in just a couple days,


but then
because of the pandemic,


we shut down.

Quarantine day... 22?

I don't know, should I sit
on the couch today or maybe...

sit on the couch?

This pandemic can
literally crush people,


and it's terrible.

If it's not loneliness

from being by yourself
for so long,


it's going crazy

because you don't know
what's gonna happen.


I'm 39, and I might not
ever have the chance


to meet my husband.

I'm in my car;
I'm about to head over

to take my mom
some treats right now.

She lives in a care facility

because of her Alzheimer's
and dementia,

and I'm sure...

I don't know.

A lot of people are
experiencing this as well,

but it's really hard for me

to not be able to see her,

to not be able to hug her.

It's hard.

And it feels like my chance
to be the Bachelorette,


it's just over.

I'm here.

I know that there were times

when you thought
this may not actually happen

and everything was conspiring
against you in this universe,

but it is not.

Clare, we're gonna

in just a few days.

to La Quinta, California.


I'm so excited.

It's insane to think
this is happening.

We're some of the only people
in this world


that can really date

because of this crazy thing
called COVID.

to Palm Springs.

Obviously, at first,
it was excitement,


but then it was like,

safety and our health
is a priority.

At any point,
I could've caught this disease


and this could be over.

So waiting for my test result

has not been an easy thing
to go through.

I really hope
that I am COVID-free,


because I'm really
looking forward


to meeting these guys.

[knock at door]

Greetings, everybody.

Here is where I will be staying

for basically
until filming starts.

I'm quarantining, you know,

in order to meet
my future wife, Clare.

Isn't it crazy
what we do for love?


Flew across the country,
quarantining,

just to make ourselves

available and healthy for Clare.

It is 7:20 a. m.

Been in quarantine
for about 24 hours here,

but it's time
for the first COVID test,

so not looking forward to it.

You know, this stuff hurts.

They're shoving basically,
like, a pipe cleaner

up in your nostrils
to the back of your head.

That's, like, the only thing

I've been thinking about
really, is like,

I do not wanna get COVID

and I just get
sent home instantly.

No, no, no. Mask on. Okay.

Pull it down
so that your nose is exposed

and your mouth is covered.

Okay. Okay, and head up.

Oh, God. She--oh, God.

All right.

[coughs]

[coughing] Oh, my God.

Oh, my God.

Oh! Is that--are we done?

That's--wow.

Eyes watering.

The thing just got
shoved up my nose.

Ah! [sniffs]

Clare, I'm doing this for you.

It's day two of quarantine,
and you'll never believe it.

Clare already has me
in the hot tub.

Brushing up
on some light reading here.

It's on, uh,

Of course I'm a very,
you know, proud alum.

during quarantine.

Secretly, I'm really good
at chess.

I've been playing since
I was, like, six or seven,

and there's not many people
that can honestly b*at me.


I flew 2,000 miles
to see Clare.


I'm away from my daughter
to see Clare.


It's a big deal.

I mean, I have not ever been

away from her for this long,

but I know
that it's gonna be worth it.


I like this isolation thing.

I've done
this type of thing before,

especially
in a m*llitary context,


having done, like, Ranger School

that, like, kept me in isolation

or without resources
for a long time.


[shouts]

It's almost like
it's training camp


back in football.

You're reviewing your game plan.

all the things you wanna say,

all the things you wanna do.

is a complete 180.

to that woman

getting out of the limo
that first night?

I'm proud of you
for trying again.

Because when you go through
something like that,

it is easy to just wanna hide,

but sometimes you never know

where that first step
is gonna lead you,

and look where it's led me.

That's why I'm sitting here

I've done a lot of work.

I've done a lot of therapy.

And my dad, I know,
would just be so proud.

he was such an inspiration

He was somebody
who always wanted me

to just follow my heart.

to set an example

and how a real man treats women.

because he was that example.
