playing in the lookout

fell down

[Music]

and broke his ground

oh yeah that's nice okay

here's the last block

easy does it you're almost there

[Music]

what is that noise

[Music]

everybody

here's that noise

that is precisely what I would like to

know

do you know I was just getting my

feathers into place and it sounded like

the sky was falling

there it goes again it's coming from

outside

[Music]

hi everybody hey we're having drum fun

now huh

PJ is my name I love to play a game a

baseball or maybe basketball

usually in a hurry but never stop to

worry about what will happen if I trip

or fall I like to play My Drum yeah

sometimes I wipe it on my shirt

he's always ready for fun yes PJ is the

one we'll check it out

[Music]

awesome

I went

sometimes I wipe it off my shirt

s

[Applause]

yes

okay I think you're being a little too

noisy your drumming made our Tower

tumble and it made Barney fall down the

slide away slipped and flipped and now

oops sorry oh that's okay BJ we know you

were just having fun but BJ was doing a

lot more than just making noise he was

also making a rhythm I was oh yeah I

knew that we learned about rhythm in

school our music teacher says a rhythm

is a repeating pattern of beads uh say

what oh well a beat is just a sound like

hitting your drum

or Clapping Your Hands

and the rhythm is when you play a group

of Beats again and again all right got

it I think oh I'll show you BJ I know a

rhythm game that we can all play

together okay this is a song and a

clapping game it's so much fun to play

you can do it with a group you can do it

with yourself you can do it most every

day just listen

foreign

the good thing about this clapping is

the Rhythm will never never change but

the things we're about to clap on please

seem a little straight

[Music]

on your shoulders

[Music]

the good thing about this clapping is

the river will never never change but

the things

[Music]

on your knees now

are your hips now

this is cool

one more time

[Music]

just to make us feel good on the very

last time everybody clap with your hands

here we go

[Music]

last time

[Music]

I get it now it's not hard to make a

rhythm well it sure isn't in fact

sometimes you make rhythms without even

knowing it we do surely Ashley try

walking across the playground and

Clapping Your Hands each time you take a

step okay

hey walking makes a slow kind of Rhythm

and Hannah why don't you try skipping

and clapping oh

hey this is fun what other kinds of

rhythms are there Barney well let's see

there's the Rhythm in music like in our

clapping game and the rhythms in our

bodies like when you skip or walk and

there are even rhythms in some of the

games you like to play

[Music]

bubblegum cookie dough

one two three four five six

seven eight nine ten

nice jumping Ashley thank you Barney

you're welcome see there's a rhythm even

when you're jumping rope would you like

to play another game

this is a listening game and I'll bet if

we listen very carefully we can hear

rhythms all around us

the dog barking is a rhythm oh you're

right

and if we listen even more carefully

maybe we'll hear a quieter rhythm

for you

right

uh is there a problem

BJ we're trying to listen for something

quiet

I think you wanted us to hear you so

much that you forgot how important it

can be to listen

[Music]

yeah

if you want someone to listen to you

then you need to listen to take turns

talking it's kind of like a game and

listen when you hear your name oh Barney

listen to The Raindrops listen to The

Birds

listen to your mother and listen to

these words everybody should stop

who is it when we will talk with

your family at the table with your

friends down on a walk everybody should

stop

listen to what I say

you can learn more every day

[Music]

if you want someone to listen to you

then you need to listen to take turns

talking it's kind of like a game

[Music]

with your

friends

[Music]

said you can learn more every day

what a lovely idea it certainly is

important to listen isn't it scooter

what what'd you say I can't hear you

[Music]

never mind

[Music]

my teacher says that people all around

the world make music with different

kinds of drums really I thought all

drums were pretty much the same

well you know what they say BJ if you

wanna learn something new just look at

it

we've got books about drums how cool is

that

drums were one of the first musical

instruments and you'll find them in

every country all around the world

maybe you've seen drums like this in a

parade or at a circus

yeah

but in India you'd probably hear this

kind of drum it's called a toddler

[Music]

a tablet this is the Nigerian talking

drum it can't really talk but a drummer

can use it to send messages to friends

far away

in Ireland they play a drum called the

bowron see how skinny it is there's an

Irish legend that says two friends had

to share just one drum so they cut it in

half and that was the first Ballroom

well I don't want to cut anything in

half but I do think it'd be fun to make

my very own drum yeah

then this sounds like a job Fuller

oh boy

I'm good

oh I've been looking in my body

and I found a lot of things

gizmos and gadgets

[Music]

so you're making drums out of oatmeal

boxes very good yeah and use the beans

to make noise inside of the plates

oh and then you can decorate the outside

with paperwork

oh yeah

flip the lid on the top and just drum on

that sure

pass the beans please

because you can do whatever you want oh

very good Ashley

yes

we're all done Barney what do you think

oh very nice I like your drumming sounds

and listen to our tambourines we can hit

them like a drum or you can just shake

them

outstanding could I try that sure we

made extra tambourines for you and

Barney

we've got our very own Rhythm band

oh

here we go

here we go

all on a Saturday night I put my right

hand in I put my right hand out I gave

my hand a shake shake shake and turn

myself about

here we go

here we go

[Applause]

oh

I hope something

I give myself

that was terrific I think drums are lots

of fun they are but there's more to

Drums than just having fun they can also

be part of something very important like

what whoa I could tell you but I think

my friends can do it better which

friends

these friends

there you are Barney hi Marvin oh my god

oh everyone I'd like you to meet my very

good friend Marvin Johnson and his

daughter Micah hi

everyone Marvin and Micah are Native

Americans that's right Barney my family

come from the Choctaw Seminole Chickasaw

and Cheyenne Nations

drums and dances have been important to

my people for a very long time I learned

them when I was young now I'm teaching

them to Micah Barney asked me to show

you one of our chances while my father

plays the drama

first we need to put on some special

clothes that we brought okay okay we'll

you outside come on everybody

here they come on

[Music]

Wow you guys look great thank you these

are clothes that we wear for very

special occasions

and check out that cool drum

my drum is made of wood and deer skin

the picture shows a warrior Gathering

food for his tribe the Cheyenne believed

that in the drum is a spirit and when I

play the drum the spirit comes out for

the dancers would you like to see a

dance right now

[Music]

of a lady butterfly who is very sad when

her husband dies but in time she learns

to be happy again

are you ready

[Music]

oh

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

my stars and was just beautiful oh I

wish scooter that you have been able to

hear it hey

what you yelling for huh

oh my oh my oh my I'm really glad Mr

Johnson came to visit and I loved

Micah's dance

it takes hard work to learn a dance like

that but I'm sure it's a lot of fun too

and you know

sorry but we had so much fun talking

about drums and stuff that I just have

to beat my drum some more I think I

think I just got too many boom boom

booms left in me

well then maybe we'd better all get

those boom booms out of our systems and

I know just how to do it

[Music]

[Music]

to be crazy

a horse and a flea and three blind mice

sat on a curved Zone cover with ice the

horse he slipped and fell on the fleet

sent to flee there's a horse on me

crazy

way down south where bananas grow a flea

stepped on an elephant's toe the

elephant cried with tears and his eyes

why don't you pick on sewing your size

to be crazy

to be crazy

must be crazy

okay BJ do you still have any booms left

in you well I better chat

okay

no I'm all out of booze oh that's good

we've been doing so much drumming today

I think we could probably all use a

little rest

I think I'll go home and tell

about how much fun we have see you later

I guess with CJ gone things will be a

lot quieter around here yeah and even

though we've seen lots of drums to be

done I know one thing you just can't

beat

spending a day with the friends you love

[Music]

[Applause]

we're a happy family with a great big

hug and a kiss from me to you won't you

say you love me too

[Music]

we're best friends like friends

[Music]

hey let's go get our drums and tamarinds

we made we can have a parade

[Music]

thank you

[Music]

hey everybody it's time for Barney dad

hello again to all my friends I'm glad

you came to play our fun and learning

Never End here's what we did today

the fun started when BJ began to play

his drum

we learned that drums can come in all

shapes and sizes our Native American

friends use drums to help tell stories

I'm sure you'll love making music with

drums

and remember I love you
