Barney's friends are big and small they

come from lots of places after school

they need to play and sing with happy

faces Barney shows us lots of things

like how to play pretend ABCs and one

two threes and how to be a friend whose

party comes to play with us whenever we

may need him before he can be your

friend too if you just make me leave him

what's going on I'm looking for Jeff we

were going to walk home together I

haven't seen him but you come on come

it's music yeah but who's making it and

where is it coming from it sounds like

it's coming from the Tree House well

well now we know where Jeff is are you

sure that's Jeff when did he learn to

play like that I don't know I've never

heard him play before but he sounds

wait a minute what I think I just solved

the mystery come on okay

you look like you were having fun Jeff I

was but it's only a toy clarinet I wish

I could play a real clarinet I'd love to

play a real instrument in a real band

just like my big brother wouldn't it be

great to really know how to play it sure

would

hey everybody hi there did I hear

someone say play you know how much I

love games oh we weren't talking about

playing games Barney I was just wishing

I knew how to play a musical instrument

like in a real band I hope that doesn't

sound like fun but you can't make real

music with a toy clarinet oh go ahead

Jeff just take a big deep breath who

knows what might come out really sure

give it a try well okay

here goes

oh all right let's see there you're

making music already try it again

oh that was even better with Barney it

wasn't me I wasn't doing anything

well what do you know it's Mr Boyd it's

Mr Boyd all right but what's that he's

playing let's go see

oh do you think that's all the music for

this afternoon are you kidding we're

just getting started hit it bye

hi kid hi Barney hi there we just had to

come see what you were playing

oh this this is my old band instrument I

used to play this back when I was in the

school band it sure is Big what's it

called it's a sousaphone

that's a funny name what are these

things well these are called valves it's

how we make the notes see by pressing

these different buttons you get

different sounds I'll show you some are

high

and summer low

like that was loud

it can't play even lower listen to this

[Music]

wow I'd like to learn to play a

sousaphone someday well I bet you'd make

a super deep versus a fun player when I

grow up I'm going to play a clarinet

just like the one my brother plays and I

want to play the flute oh that's a great

choice and Keisha what would you like to

play I don't know I'd like to play them

all oh well look how about a trumpet

or trombone

or drums

it was terrific it certainly was what's

it like to be in a real band Mr Boyd oh

it's like nothing you've ever seen or

heard right Barney oh that's right

everybody's dressed up in bright

colorful uniforms marching in perfect

road with the trumpets

there's nothing like a band for turning

a plain ordinary day into something

that's just well it's just

that's it I couldn't have said it better

myself Barney I wish we could hear a

real band

well maybe you can we can I am getting

together with all of my old friends from

the school band that that's why I was

practicing my sousaphone oh really we

are gonna polish up our instruments and

dust off our music and try some of our

favorite Tunes oh boy a real band Yes

where the concert is tomorrow afternoon

across the street in the park and you

are all invited

thank you Mr Boyd we'd love to go oh

good I'll look for you all then but now

I've got a little work to do so I am I

guess I'll see you tomorrow

Barney do you think Mr Boyd span will

play some marches I hope so my kids are

my favorite mine too I like marching

like dinner Parade When You're marching

in a band everyone marches together all

you have to do is follow the Beats you

mean like this

oh good Robert that's the idea okay now

it's so much fun it's fun to march with

everyone

oh it makes us feel real happy when they

yes you were great just great but I I've

got some bad news bad news

oh what's wrong I just got a phone call

seems my friends can't make it after all

I'm afraid there's not going to be a

band concert tomorrow oh we're so sorry

Mr blade well I'm sorry too but you're

not a thing we can do about it

oh well maybe some other time huh

we should think of something to do to

make Mr Boyd feel better it's too bad

our band is only pretend if we had real

instruments then maybe we could cheer

him up except it would take us a long

time to learn how to play them I know I

just wish there were some band

instruments we could learn to play right

now well maybe there are but Barney

doesn't it take lots of practice to

learn to play in instruments sure it

does but in our band the instruments are

special

where are these special instruments will

it see special instruments well now that

could take some work why we might even

need a little help from

gizmos and gadgets

you'll have lots of different kinds of

instruments

oh that's great so those are jeans

aren't they yes they're gonna make my

sound on my shaker I'll see what you did

you took some wax paper and put it over

the end of a paper towel roll very good

we will have a very colorful band oh

yeah we will yes so Robert your drum is

a coffee can with the lid on it right

uh-huh great all your symbols are almost

done aren't they King

oh that's neat blue and the different

colored streamers

everywhere

e-i-e-i-o and in this band he had some

shakers

hey what y'all did it's our band your

band well I declare you children are

making ribs unovable music

and I'm certain that you'll be playing

even better by tomorrow

of course you will all it takes is

practice that's how everyone learns a

little bit at a time

when I grow up I like to play in a band

but I wonder if I'll know how I guess

I'll just keep learning things a little

at a time and I think I'll start right

now

because we learn big things a little at

a time to go right up a mountain first

we learn to climb I can be anything when

I grow up by learning a little at a time

week and since my own band can't come I

how about something in between like

a saxophone

can play anything I think you're right

how about a clarinet that's my favorite

well he's got one of those

that's really neat but my favorite

instrument is still the sousaphone then

a sousaphone it is young man

I had no idea Mr Boyd was such a fan

musicians

think I could play in the band too sure

scooter the more the merrier well in

that case you won't mind that I invited

some other friends of mine to join us

some very special Friends Barney I get

the feeling you're up to something

it was quite a musical day with Mr

Boyd's band instruments

some instruments are big and some are

little some make sounds when you blow

into them and others look kind of funny

we found out it takes lots of practice

to learn to play in a band but you can

have fun pretending to play an

instrument right now music is something

special for everyone whether we play an

instrument or watch a parade or I just

love marching bands and remember I love

you
