02x13 - Look Back in Anger

Previously on "devious maids"...

Go to rehab.

When you get back...

I will be here waiting for you.

Morning.

Oh, crap.

Dad says you two are getting back together.

Your father's confused.

We're going to Paris?

You said you always wanted to see it.

So, you'd rather be with Javier?

I don't know.

Someone is willing to give me a kidney?

Who is this angel?

He's married to your maid.

I'm his legal guardian.

Mr. Kenneth has taken back his power of attorney.

I am gonna see to it you are thrown out of this country.

[g*nsh*t]

Oh, my God!

You sh*t him!

I hope you're not gonna say anything to the cops.

I already told the police everything I know.

We have to get rid of Valentina.

Been 15 years since he d*ed.

Have you forgiven me yet?

You took your eyes off of him.

You let that car plow right into him.

Maybe you did k*ll someone.

It's not what you think.

Maybe she had some physical proof of what he did.

Do you know where she was staying?

This silver key isn't mine.

Opal's bank.

Oh, my God.

[Knock on door]

Hey. It's time.

Uh, I'll be right there.

What the hell was inside that safe deposit box?

You've been crying for the last two hours.

I'll tell you later.

Today is about Rosie.

This is so nice of you guys, taking me out for lunch.

We thought you deserved a nice meal in a fancy restaurant for a change.

You've been through so much.

You know, this could be my last meal in this country.

No, I'm sure you'll find a way to clear up your immigration problems.

How?

The hearing is next week, and Reggie threw away all of my documents.

Well, I guess we just have to hope for a miracle.

Oh, no!

It's closed.

Hmm. For a private event.

Wonder what it could be.

I'm certainly curious.

Me too.

Let's crash.

Nice!

Girls!

We can't do this!

[Sighs]

Come on.

We'll get in trou... ble.

Spence?

I thought you were in rehab.

Oh, he's done with all that.

Now he has something he wants to ask you.

So... it's just the two of us for lunch?

Oh, no. Someone else will be joining us.

Hey, buddy.

[Gasps] Miguel?

You're supposed to be with Valentina.

Oh, I couldn't do this without him.

Do what?

Wait.

This isn't just to keep me from getting deported, is it?

I let you get away from me once, and I don't want that to happen again.

[Chuckles]

I can't see anything.

What's going on?

Spence is down on one knee.

Is Rosie crying?

Buckets.

Oh, my God! He's putting the ring on her finger!

Oh!

Oh, yay!

Marriage is exciting, isn't it?

Yeah.

Yeah, it is.

Now if you'll both excuse me, I have to go turn my husband in to the police.

Evelyn?

Evelyn?

Oh.

I said, can you remember the last time we were this happy?

Not really.

Why are you so sentimental?

Is it because of our anniversary?

Of course.

Tomorrow night, we will have been married for 25 years.

I keep wondering, how in God's name did we manage to outlast so many other couples?

I think it's our sense of humor.

Oh, I was going to credit our high tolerance for adultery and perversion.

Either way...

Mr. Powell!

Mr. Powell!

Ah!

Someone has good news.

I just got off the phone with Bruno.

I got the internship.

Outstanding!

Congratulations.

I'm feeling excluded.

Could someone fix that?

Your husband helped me get a job with Bruno de Luca.

The fashion designer?

Mr. Powell sent him my drawings, and Mr. de Luca loved them.

Bruno offered her an internship in Manhattan this summer.

And Mr. Powell says I can stay in your apartment while I'm there.

So, our maid will be living in our $10 million penthouse.

The neighbors will be thrilled!

Oh, Mr. Powell, thank you so much.

It was my pleasure.

Well, I have to get the laundry done, so [Chuckles]

You and Valentina seem to have grown quite close.

What?

I said I'm going to rodeo to pick up your anniversary gift.

I can't believe it...

25 years.

How did we do it?

It certainly is a mystery.

Well, that's quite a story, Mrs. Deering.

How'd you piece it all together?

I found this newspaper clipping yesterday.

And this cloth.

According to the date on the clipping, this, uh, took place in '99.

Yeah.

It was a long time ago.

I don't get it.

If Mr. Deering was responsible, why would he keep all this?

I found these things in his housekeeper's safe deposit box.

I'm guessing she got the cloth from the grille of his car.

That's what she was using to blackmail him.

But she can't confirm that because she committed su1c1de.

Uh... yeah.

So, what's next?

Do you bring Nick in for questioning?

Whoa, whoa.

Slow down.

Has your husband confessed to any of this?

No.

So, all you have in the way of evidence is this shred of cloth, this old newspaper clipping, and your suspicions?

He's been acting suspiciously for months.

I know in my heart he did this, and... I think it would be wise to arrest him.

Mrs. Deering, I'm curious...

How is your marriage?

[Piano playing]

[Hispanic accent]

Can I buy you another?

Don't bother.

I hate getting hit on.

Does it happen a lot?

Um... look at me.

[Chuckles] Look at you?

Look at me.

You should be flattered.

I'm the hottest guy in here.

That's not saying much.

Come on.

Let me talk to you.

You could listen to my sexy accent.

If I want to hear a sexy accent, I can talk to myself.

I'm Sebastien.

And you are...?

Not interested.

I'd like to close my tab.

Uh, no, no. No.

You can't go.

Look, it's not you.

I'm just in a bad mood.

What is it?

Tell me.

Okay.

My best friend got engaged today to a great guy.

Now she's got everything she ever wanted, and it makes me think, when is my dream gonna come true?

What is your dream?

I want to be a famous singer.

Oh.

That's, uh, that's a big dream.

Don't look at me like that.

I'm good.

I've been working on my demo.

Carmen Luna.

Hey, now I know your name.

Someday, everybody's gonna know my name.

It was nice to meet you.

Really?

Not you... him.

[Cellphone beeps, door opens]

Where the hell have you been?

I'm sorry.

We were supposed to meet an hour ago, and Carter isn't returning any of my phone calls.

Ty, we got to talk.

First, tell me...

Did you ditch the g*ns?

I did.

But we don't have much time.

I-I just came to say goodbye.

What do you mean?

I told my parents about the robberies.

What?!

They freaked out and said that they can't protect me if I stay here, so they bought me a plane ticket to Peru...

My mom's got a cousin out there.

What about me and Carter?

You're just gonna leave us holding the bag?

Carter left for Europe this morning.

[Chuckles]

You're lying.

When he told his parents, they drove him straight to the airport.

Damn it!

Look, I'm sorry, but I-I got to go pack.

I can't believe you guys are abandoning me.

What did you think would happen?

From the second you started talking about getting rid of Valentina.

But it makes sense.

She's the only one who can tie us to the robberies.

We k*lled Alejandro by mistake.

What you're talking about, we're not gonna be any part of it.

Fine.

Just go, then.

Seriously, dude, I think it's time you started taking your meds again, 'cause this isn't you.

[Door opens, closes]

Hey!

You're not supposed to be drinking when you're on dialysis.

I won't be much longer.

Drum roll, please.

I'm getting a new kidney!

[Gasps]

They found a donor! Ohh!

That's why I'm celebrating.

I'm sending my old kidneys off in style.

So, who is it?

That's the best part...

It's Pablo!

My Pablo's giving you a kidney?

He doesn't even like to share the remote.

Maybe he's changed.

Maybe he's more generous than you give him credit for.

Or maybe he's trying to win me back.

Either way, I get a new kidney!

That's the problem.

I'm not sure I want to get back with him.

What?!

I may be in love with Javier.

No, no.

You love Pablo.

Javier is just a crush.

I think it's more than that.

But you're not sure.

And you have a daughter with Pablo and a wonderful history.

He cheated on me.

And now he's saving my life.

Cut the man some slack.

Look, part of me wants to get back together with Pablo.

We had a lot of good years.

But I'm still so angry.

What if I go back to him and it doesn't work out?

God, this is complicated.

Then let's make it simple.

Do you love Pablo?

Yes.

And do you love me?

Yes.

Then I think you know what to do.

[Door open]

Hey. How was shopping?

Did you find a wedding dress?

It is very beautiful.

But I think it's too expensive.

I told you...

Money's no object.

I think maybe it is.

Your credit card was denied.

Oh.

Well, I'll talk to the bank later.

I'm sure we can clear this up.

Good.

I was worried we might be having money problems.

Hey, guys.

What's going on?

Carmen, do we have any juice?

Second shelf in the fridge.

If you're getting up, I could use a glass.

Actually, I thought you could bring the juice to us.

You've been here six hours.

You already expect me to... to wait on you?

Isn't that what you get paid for?

No.

I get paid to vacuum, mop, and wash the windows.

The windows are dirty.

Fine.

I'll get you some juice.

To answer your question...

The divorce cleaned me out.

And now that I'm not working, yes, I'm a little strapped for cash.

Why didn't you tell me this?

Because I didn't want you to worry.

But I do worry.

We've been spending so much on this wedding.

And we should.

It's your day.

I want it to be perfect.

Well, I won't be able to enjoy it knowing that we're going broke.

We'll be fine.

I'll get another job.

Until you do, I think we need to cut back on our spending.

Okay. Where?

Do we need such a fancy car?

Just paid for it.

If I sold now, I'd lose my ass.

What about the sailboat?

Sold it months ago.

There must be something you spend money on we don't really need.

Okay.

Here's your juice.

And don't be asking for a snack.

I'm taking a break.

[Scoffs]

Zoila.

What a nice surprise.

I hope you're not busy.

I have something to tell you, and I didn't want to do it over the phone.

Sounds serious.

It is.

Javi, I don't think we can go to Paris.

Why not?

The other night, when Valentina was pulled over by the police and Pablo and I went to help her, one thing led to another, and...

[Sighs]

We had sex.

Oh.

I am so sorry.

Were you drunk?

I wish.

But no.

I am very angry.

[Sighs]

But he is your ex.

You have a long history together, and...

[Sighs]

You obviously feel guilty, so...

I think I can forgive you.

Why do you have to be so damn wonderful?

I could yell if you want, break some dishes?

And now you're being adorable.

Stop it!

That's not even the worst part!

There's more?

I love you.

I do.

You've been nothing but amazing to me from the moment I met you.

But Pablo and I have over 20 years of marriage together, and he wants to reconcile, and, for a lot of reasons...

I think I have to give him a second chance.

I see.

Don't hate me.

[Sighs]

All I ever wanted was for you to be happy.

I was just hoping it would be with me.

Yes, hi.

I'm calling about the limo I ordered for this Sunday.

I just got the invoice.

You're charging me too much.

[Doorbell rings]

Dios mio.

Can you hold on a second?

Hey. How are you?

Busy.

Sorry... my mom and I can't make it to Uncle Spence's wedding, so she wanted me to drop our gift off.

Yeah, thanks.

Put it on the table.

Yes. I'm still here.

Okay, then can you tell me what a car costs for four hours?

Can I use the bathroom?

Yeah, yeah.

Wait...

Is that 7 or 11?

Your accent is so thick, I can't understand a word you're saying.

Carmen?

We haven't talked in a while.

[Sighs]

I was wondering, uh, how is your singing going?

Not so good.

Maybe when I finish my demo, but I haven't been able to get back in the studio.

So, would it help if you had more time to focus on your career?

Sure.

Then that's what you should do.

Seriously?

I can take some time off?

Take as much time as you want.

But who's gonna clean the house?

I will.

This is fantastic!

And you're still gonna pay me?

No.

Well, how does that work?

These are all good questions.

Let me get back to you.

Rosie?

What's going on?

[Voice breaking] Now, you know how much I love you.

Oh, my God.

You're f*ring me?

A little.

Why?

[Sighs]

Spence lost his job.

We can't afford you.

Well, you could if you didn't live in this palace.

You expect us to move?

What, are you too good for a condo?

Carmen.

And it would be easier to clean.

No.

I'm sorry.

You have to go.

[Sighs]

Okay. I get it.

I'm not happy about it, but I get it.

Obviously, we feel terrible about this, so if you can think of any way we can help you, let us know.

I'd love to keep living here.

So, give it some thought and get back to us.

Thanks again for letting me move back.

This is gonna be great.

I'm sure it will be.

Just watch.

This time around, I'm gonna be the perfect husband.

I'm not expecting perfection.

Still, I'm gonna do my best to make you forget all about Javier.
[Doorbell rings]

I'll get that.

You settle in, and then we'll make dinner.

Just like old times.

[Sighs]

Helen?

Is Pablo here?

He left this stuff at my place.

I'll get him.

Uh, don't bother.

Just give it to him?

Of course.

And for what it's worth, I'm really sorry about everything.

What everything?

I mean, I'm sure it was difficult to have Pablo leave like he did.

I don't know what he's been telling you, but I broke up with him.

You broke up with him?

I couldn't take that lying bum one more day.

Truth is, I hope he dies in a gutter.

I'll tell him you stopped by.

Who was that?

That was Helen.

She... wanted to drop off your stuff.

Oh.

Did she have anything interesting to say?

She sure did.

Oh, geez.

No, it was good.

Great, even.

Really?

'Cause I-I-I would hate for you to think that I came back just because I h-had nowhere else to go.

Are you sure you're not angry?

What I am, Pablo, is relieved.

Goodbye.

Zoila?

I'm an idiot.

I know what you did.

And we need to talk.

[Sighs shakily]

What I don't get is how you could live with yourself all these years.

It was an accident.

But you left!

You drove off!

You think I don't hate myself?

Not enough, from where I'm standing.

I spent 15 years shutting myself off from the world.

I was so disgusted by what I'd done.

I knew I didn't deserve to be happy.

But then I met you.

And if you had told me the truth, trusted me...

I was scared of losing you.

And I have...

I have nothing now.

No! No!

I will not allow you to sit there and play the victim.

What you did that day set off a chain of events that also cost Dahlia and Opal their lives.

God, Nick!

Can you not see the blood on your hands?

[Sighs shakily]

What do you need me to do?

Ultimately, I need you to go to the police.

"Ultimately"?

First, you must go to the Powells and tell them the truth.

No.

I can't face them.

You have to.

[Voice breaking] They need to know who k*lled their son.

How was dialysis?

The doctor said that I looked too thin, and he didn't mean it as a compliment.

But it was nice to hear.

You'll be okay once you have the transplant surgery.

Have they scheduled that yet?

No.

And they're not going to.

What?

It seems Pablo won't be giving me a kidney after all.

But he promised!

He was just trying to win Zoila back.

And now that she's decided to be with Javier, he changed his mind.

Doesn't she realize how sick you are?

It's not her fault.

It's just...

The way it is.

What are you gonna do?

I don't know.

Aren't you scared?

I'm terrified.

[Notes play]

Rosie, you're here.

Come here.

I want you to meet the one and only Michael Feinstein.

Okay.

He's kind of famous.

Well, not kind of.

I've been nominated for a grammy five times.

Wow!

How many did you win?

I don't like to talk about awards.

He's agreed to sing at our wedding.

What a wonderful gift.

Gift?

I need to speak to my fiancee.

You're paying him to sing at our wedding?

What would that cost?

Can we not argue about money right now?

'Cause it kind of upsets me.

It will upset me if we go broke!

Relax.

I will get work soon.

But what if you don't?

Rosie, I am sorry, but I refuse to freak out about stuff like this.

That's because you don't know what it feels like to grow up without money.

Okay. I'll... I'll talk to Michael about a discount.

I don't do heavy metal or discounts.

And while I'm doing my internship in New York, the Powells are gonna let me live in their apartment.

Isn't that amazing?

That's great news, Val.

Come here.

[Chuckles]

Well, it doesn't just have to be great news for me.

I thought maybe you could come with me.

Wouldn't that be fun?

The two of us in the big apple.

[Chuckles]

That sounds amazing.

What's wrong?

My mom is really sick, and your dad changed his mind about giving her his kidney.

[Sighs]

I know. He told me.

I'm so sorry.

Don't suppose you could ask him to reconsider?

I can't.

It's got to be his decision.

That's what I figured.

Anyway, look.

As much as I'd like to be with you now is just not a good time for me to leave L.A.

I get it.

But I'll pick you up for Rosie's wedding tomorrow?

I'll be ready at 9:00.

Val.

Why can't we catch a break?

I don't know.

[Telephone rings]

[Telephone beeps]

Hello?

Hi.

I'm calling for Valentina.

Is she there?

No, I'm sorry.

She's not.

Well, I'm trying to find her.

Do you know where she might be?

Not right now.

Who is this?

This is your friend... Sam.

Well, when I see her, I'll tell her you called.

You know what?

Never mind.

I'll track her down eventually.

[Cellphone beeps]

[Piano music plays]

[Sighs]

Hey.

I listened to your CD.

Hello, Sebastien.

You sing as good as you look, and you look as good as me, which means you are fantastic.

I'm glad you liked it, but I'm... I'm not in the mood to joke around.

Why are you so sad?

I got fired today.

Then please...

Let me buy you a drink.

Don't get me wrong...

I hated my job, but it paid the bills.

So now I have to get a new job, which I'll hate because it still won't be what I want to do with my life.

But what if I never get to have the life I want?

Not everybody gets to be a star, so I should just give up now and do something else?

But how can I do that if music is all I care about?

It's my love, my passion.

Well, make sure to say that in the meeting.

Huh?

I happen to know the head of talent at Discerna Records.

I gave her your CD.

She wants to meet you.

Are you serious?

Yeah.

[Chuckles]

Wait.

You didn't help me just to get me into bed, did you?

No.

Uh, I helped you because I think you can really sing.

The drink I just bought you...

That was to get you into bed.

[Chuckles]

What is this?

It's a pre-classic Mayan dagger.

It's magnificent.

What did they use it for?

I'm not sure...

Looting, pillaging.

Maybe they even sacrificed virgins with it.

God, you know me so well.

What do you think of your gift?

It's lovely.

The inscription's very sweet.

That's it?

That's all I get?

I don't want to fight on our anniversary.

I'm not trying to start a fight.

I was asking a question.

It's just, every time I think things are gonna get better between us, you go back to your old ways.

My old ways?

I'm talking about Valentina.

It is Flora all over again.

That's absurd!

I think of Valentina as a daughter.

Oedipus would be so proud.

You have a lot of nerve, given your recent romps with the help.

Yes, I had an affair with Tony.

One indiscretion compared to the dozens of whores you have supported.

My infidelities were the result of an understanding you agreed to.

What choice did I have?

You were gonna leave me.

Didn't I have the right to be angry?

I took my eyes off Barrett for 10 seconds.

It's not my fault he's dead.

You have made this into an argument about our son, and this is not about him.

Who are you kidding?

It's always about our son.

Maybe you and I should just stop trying to be happy.

It's always such a disappointment.

Hey.

Where you going?

My best friend is getting married in 16 hours.

I have to help her get ready for the wedding.

Well, I had a great time last night.

No, I had a great time.

You had a fantastic time.

This is true.

So, obviously, I want to see you again.

I think we can arrange that.

I like you.

Which is why I need to be honest.

Okay.

You know that music executive I told you about?

Great. Here it comes.

There's no meeting, right?

Oh, sure, there's a meeting.

Thank God. [Chuckles]

You had me worried.

No, you're definitely meeting with the head of talent for Discerna Records.

Okay.

The problem is...

She's my wife.

[Sighs]

Thank you for seeing us on such short notice.

I hope we weren't interrupting anything important.

We were celebrating our anniversary, so... no.

Before we get into your reason for this unexpected visit, may I say something?

Sure.

Adrian and I have been a little bit cross with you, Nicholas.

Cross?

You and Dahlia were our dear friends.

We spent every weekend together.

And vacations.

And then one day, you just stopped returning our phone calls.

Now, if we did something wrong or offended you somehow...

You should've called and given us a-a chance to apologize.

No.

You did nothing wrong.

Then why stop being our friend?

Been 15 years since you called.

Why?

It's hard to explain.

Did it have something to do with Barrett's death?

Oh, for God's sake.

Can we please just say it?

Our son d*ed.

And you didn't know what to say to us.

We were out of our minds with grief, probably not very pleasant to be around.

But still...

You should've reached out to us.

That's not exactly what happened.

Nick has something to say to you.

Well, get on with it.

These meaningful glances have gotten me on the edge of my seat.

[Chuckles]

Well, for you...

To really understand, I-I have to go back to the beginning.

My marriage to Dahlia was always troubled.

We were aware of some tension.

It was more than that.

I had to travel all the time for business, which made Dahlia very unhappy.

She spent so much time alone in our house with no one to talk to but our maid.

And at some point, Dahlia began to realize that Opal was actually in love with her.

And so, one uneventful afternoon, Dahlia decided she would seduce Opal.

And then, to hurt me, Dahlia began leaving clues for me to find so I'd know she was having an affair.

I'm so sorry to interrupt this really extraordinarily tawdry tale, but... what does it have to do with us?

He's getting to that.

Dahlia felt that it wasn't enough for me to be jealous.

That... that my humiliation would not be complete until I knew who my rival was, so she decided to tell me on our way to a chamber of commerce luncheon where I was going to get an award.

I was driving when it happened.

Out of the blue, she just turned to me and said...

Wait a minute.

I remember that luncheon.

We were invited but couldn't go because we were celebrating Barrett's birthday.

Oh, my God.

We were driving past the park when Dahlia turned to me and said, "I'm having an affair with Opal."

And I took my eyes off the road for one second.

[Gasps]

[Tires screech, thud]

It was... an accident.

[Voice breaking] No. No, this doesn't make any sense though.

Barret was hit by a car that sped away and the people in that car never even stopped [crying] to see if my son was okay, and I do not believe that you could be that callous.

I...

Tell them what happened next.

Dahlia and I were in shock.

We... we didn't know exactly what had happened, [voice breaking] But we were scared, and the next day...

We learned that it was Barrett that we had hit and that he was dead.

And we were devastated.

[Crying] And Dahlia wanted to come tell you.

Then I was afraid it would ruin my career, and...

And we couldn't bring your little boy back.

So I convinced her to say nothing.

I understand this is opening up old wounds, but I thought you deserved to know.

Adrian.

Oh!

Adrian!

[Grunts]

[Gasps]

Get up!

What are you doing?

You k*lled my son!

You left him to die in the street!

Yes. He did.

Look at me.

Make no mistake.

The only reason that you are not dead right now is I believe a harsher punishment awaits you...

One...

Beyond your imagination.

I want him taken to the police.

That's our next stop.

For what it's worth...

I am so... very sorry.

After all these years...

It's worth nothing at all.

[Sighs shakily]

[Inhales sharply]

All these years, I blamed you for Barrett's death.

[Sniffles]

God, what did I do to you?

To us?

[Sighs]

Can you ever forgive me?

[Voice breaking] I think it's time we forgive each other.

[Sniffles, sighs]

[Women gasp]

That's a beautiful bride.

Absolutely gorgeous!

Oh, Rosie.

How do you feel?

I'm okay.

Is something wrong?

Maybe.

I don't know.

Are you hungry?

I got mints in my purse.

I'm fine.

I just don't know if I should marry Spence.

Rosie!

It's okay.

It's natural for the bride to be nervous on her wedding day.

I'm not nervous.

What happened?

Spence and I had a fight.

About what?

Money.

He doesn't have a job, but he keeps spending.

I tried to tell him we need to be careful.

He wouldn't listen.

I felt like I was seeing him for the first time.

He's a child.

That is not true.

It is.

He does not know what it means to be poor.

Ernesto was so careful with his money.

Honey.

You should never compare your second husband to your first.

I can't help it.

We were so happy, right up until the day he was m*rder*d.

I don't know if I will be as happy with Spence.

Look, being married to Spence will be different, but that doesn't mean it can't be just as wonderful.

Oh, I know it will be, because Spence loves you with all his heart.

We see it in his eyes, Rosie.

It makes us crazy jealous of you.

[Laughter]

Really?

Yeah.

Yeah.

So, don't worry about the future.

Have faith that some people do get to live happily ever after.

Thank you.

Hi, mami.

How's Rosie?

Just wedding-day jitters, but she'll be fine.

Did you get seats for us?

Right up front.

Remi's holding them for us.

[Cellphone ringing] Oh.

Go ahead.

I'll catch up.

[Cellphone beeps]

Hello?

Ms. Diaz, it's Dr. Kimball from Doheny medical center.

Hi. Your nurse already called.

She said I wasn't a match for Genevieve.

I know, but when we tested you for a kidney donation, we also ran a basic blood panel.

Okay is something wrong?

No.

I just thought you might want to know... you're pregnant.
