Thank you, Nashville.

Thank you very much.

Thank you.

The show has-has provided incredible opportunities.

We're able to be recognized as musicians.

The first time I was on at the Ryman or the Grand Ole Opry, I know why I'm there. It's because I get to play Deacon.

What you do after that point, that's what you can bring to it.

We've had a lot of wonderful doors open for us because we're part of a show that holds the integrity of the city in its heart.

Palladio: I'm writing in my downtime.

I'm working on a record.

I'm doing pretty much what Gunnar does on a daily basis.

Bowen: I'm a bit like Scarlett.

I'd always written poetry, and I'd written songs, but I was never brave enough to show anybody.

Jackson: It's kind of surreal sometimes.

It feels like reality and art are crisscrossing.

To be a part of the acting world and have it be incorporating music, as well, is just like a complete dream.

Coming here to Nashville has changed my whole life.

It's a great place to be living in, and it's a great show to be inspired by.

[Cheers and applause]

I was sitting right there with a big smile on my face.

Palladio: Thank you for the beautiful lyrics and melodies.

Thanks, buddy.

We're gonna try and do them justice.

I'm excited.

Announcer: Give it up one more time for Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio.

When we return, more behind-the-scenes action, and Jonathan Jackson takes the stage for a breathtaking performance you won't want to miss.

It's all right here with "Nashville: On The Record."

Performing at the Grand Ole Opry House is, uh...

Oh.

Hmm.

It's such an honor.

There's so much history, and you can feel it when you're just walking down the halls.

Maisy: It's inspiring.

It feels so welcoming 'cause it's just, like, all the dressing rooms, the doors are always open.

Bowen: You walk out on the boards, and you see the Ryman Circle...

Esten: That they carved out of the stage at the Ryman Auditorium...

Carmack: Where everyone who has ever performed on the Grand Ole Opry has stood.

It's hallowed ground.

It gives me chills as I'm thinking about it right now.

Getting to be a part of something that's so much bigger than yourself.

To grace the stage with so many incredible people.

Uh, I'm out of adjectives.

I still can't believe I'm here.

When we come back, a look at the making of "Nashville."

And Charles Esten makes his songwriting debut, performing with Deana Carter.

Stick around for more "Nashville: On The Record."

They don't call Nashville Music City for nothing.

This town is filled with the most incredible songwriters.

It's like nothing I've ever seen anywhere else except for here.

It still blows me away when I'm driving down music row to think that virtually every room on those couple blocks are filled with songwriters making what might be the greatest song you ever heard.

From the first verse to the chorus.

Our music team is headed up by Frankie Pine and Buddy Miller, and between the two of them, they listen to more songs than I could possibly imagine.

Buddy and I had narrowed them down, and then buddy...

But they're looking for that song that fits perfectly the character, the story, the scene.

And when they find that, they know.

Peeples: Callie Khouri, our creator, and Dee Johnson, our showrunner, work with our whole writer team, and the song and the scenes really feed off each other.

It is really driven lyrically by what Luke is experiencing.

Jackson: They do an amazing job finding those moments to put in these beautiful songs.

I think we want to grab that... that penultimate chord.

Palladio: Buddy will then call on his many incredibly talented musician friends, and they'll come up with these great arrangements.

Jackson: Not only are we focusing on recording the song, but we also have to think about the emotional reality of the character when we actually sh**t the scene.

Man: Okay, here we go.

Are we ready to cue them?

On your mark.

[Cheers and applause]

Esten: And that's when you find that there couldn't have been a written word that said this emotion better than this written song.

[Cheers and applause]

[Indistinct conversations]

Can't play without them.

You know, one of the great joys about living in this town is the people that you get to meet, and sometimes, if you're very lucky, even write with.

Look who I got with me right here.

Ladies and gentlemen, Deana Carter.

Deana Carter.

Sounded great, dude.

When we return, Will Chase and Chris Carmack bring down the house, and the Stella sisters steal our hearts. "Nashville: On The Record" will be right back.
Esten: I can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate the way that Nashville and the whole state of Tennessee has embraced and supported our show.

[Cheers and applause]

That's why we're so grateful when we get the opportunity to give back to this great community that has given us so much.

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the Nashville School of the Arts.

I sat in with a guitar quartet, some theater students, and I can tell you that the future is looking very bright.

The CMA Foundation has donated more than $10 million to this and other music-education programs across the country.

ABC is also a very proud supporter.

In fact, we've invited some of those very students that I met earlier right here tonight.

Would you please make these young artists feel welcome?

[Cheers and applause]

Hey.

Well done, sir.

Thank you.

Don't go away.

Superstar Reba takes the stage for a show-stopping performance that will have everyone on their feet.

Stay tuned for more "Nashville: On The Record."

Reba.

Aah! Reba.

She's incredible.

We met not long ago, actually, at a Christmas party.

You meet her, and she couldn't be more down-to-earth.

We ended up singing Christmas carols together, and there's a part of your mind that sort of hovers above and looks down and going, "You're singing Christmas carols with Reba."

And I go, "I know, I know. Shut up. I'm trying to sing."

She's just the sweetest, most lovely... a girl's girl.

It means so much to have such legends in country music interested in our show.

We're just so flattered and honored that she would want to be a part of this.

Having such, like, an icon on the stage is, like, so insane.

For real.

Thank you, sir. Thank you.

Esten: "Nashville: On The Record" is a celebration of the amazing music that we privileged to feature on our show.

And more importantly, it's an opportunity to shift the spotlight on the often unseen faces behind the music, our incredible family of songwriters.

And we say family because that's what they've become, collaborators, mentors, and our friends.

Tonight we are honored to have many of those songwriters right here in our audience.

So let's all take a moment and thank them for their awesome work.
