Previously on "God Friended Me"...
I was on my way to tell Cara that I was still in love with her, when I saw her with her new boyfriend.
I love you, Jaya. Rakesh, I'm sorry.
I'm not ready to get married.
Your latest scan shows the new treatment worked.
Your tumor has shrunk.
Our prayers have been answered just like we knew they would.
I moved on.
I mean, I was planning to talk to him when I saw him this morning, and then I just didn't.
I can't risk losing Miles in my life.
There is nothing you can do to lose Miles.
I'll talk to him.
I decided to tell Miles.
There's something I need to talk to you about.
After everything, we need a fresh start.
You're moving. We are.
I know what you're thinking.
What am I doing on this mountaintop?
Well, I'm up here to get the answers I've been after all along.
Who's behind the God Account?
But before we get to that, to really understand how I got here, we've got to go back to the night before my sister Ali's surgery. _
I would like to make a toast to aggressive chemo and radiation.
Ooh, never thought I'd be so happy to cheers to that.
And to a successful surgery.
Ali, we are gonna be there for you every step of the way.
Now I have to fix my mascara before Emily comes.
So, please, no more toasts.
I'll grab the food. Trish should be here soon.
I'm gonna get us another round.
How'd it go with, uh... with Corey?
Good. He's gonna let Alphonse be in C.J.'s life.
It's a first step. Yeah, that's great.
Is everything okay?
This is really hard.
Hey. Hey, it's okay.
It's just me. All right?
And whatever it is, I'll be here for you.
Susan and Liv are... are moving out of New York.
So I'm losing my family... again.
Not all of them.
Me, my dad, Ali, Rakesh... we're your family.
And we're not going anywhere.
That's what I needed to hear.
Okay. Here we go.
Yo, Cara, you hear about the God Account?
How it's up and running again?
Yeah, I did. That's great. Mm-hmm.
Don't mean to brag. 100% me.
And don't let Zack tell you otherwise.
Wait, where's Ali?
She's in the bathroom fixing her makeup.
It's already been an emotional night.
But she's doing good? Oh, no. She's great.
Now, look, I know we have a long road ahead of us, but this is the first time in a long time I know things are gonna work out.
I feel like things are exactly how they should be.
I couldn't agree more.
What is it?
I got a new Friend Suggestion.
It's for Ali.
I got to say, pre-op paperwork is a whole lot easier when all you have to do is tap a screen.
Well, I am here for support if your finger gets tired.
Actually... there's another reason why I asked you to come down here before Dad and Miles.
One of the forms I am filling out is a medical power of attorney.
If anything happens to me, I'd like you to be the one who makes the decisions.
I-I don't know what to say.
Wait... have you talked to your dad about this?
I wanted to talk to you first.
Look, I know I'm asking for a lot.
But you know my dad and Miles.
They can be... emotional.
I need someone calm, levelheaded... and that has been you every step of the way.
I understand that.
I just have to make sure that you're certain.
And I trust you.
Will you do this for me?
Hey. What's going on?
I guess this is as good of a time as any.
I need to sign over medical power of attorney.
And I asked Trish if she would do it.
Why are you making this decision now?
Did something happen? No, no.
It's standard paperwork everyone has to fill out before surgery.
Uh... Ali, don't you think we should have all talked about this?
I get that this is a lot to take in.
But I know it's the right decision.
Okay. Got your hospital bag.
A change of clothes, cell phone charger, latest version of "Us Weekly," which is actually for me.
Um, the only thing I couldn't find was your Bible.
I looked everywhere.
I must have left it at...
Miles, could you go back to your place and grab it for me?
Ali, you're about to go into surgery.
In, like, three hours.
That's plenty of time.
Miles, it's Mom's Bible.
You know how much that means to me.
Please. I need you to do this.
I'll be right back.
Yeah, so just have it to me tomorrow.
You got it.
Hey. What are you doing here?
I thought we were meeting tonight.
I know. I just wanted to stop by and check on you.
I know me moving back to Ohio wasn't exactly the news you were expecting last night.
No. Not really.
Listen, Cara, I just have to tell you... when Paul first brought it up, my first reaction was "no." I don't want to leave you.
I don't want to leave the life I've created here.
So what changed?
I know what it's like to get a second chance, to have something amazing come out of it.
I want that for Paul, for Liv.
Yeah. I get that.
You got to do what's best for your family.
Cara... you are my family... always.
Just a phone call away.
And the flight's only two hours, and you know Liv is gonna FaceTime constantly.
So you guys have to leave tomorrow?
Yeah, I've got an interview lined up at the Cleveland Clinic.
Liv starts school next week.
We've got to get a jump on house hunting.
Um, well, I-I'm still gonna come by tonight to say good-bye to everyone.
But I actually have to run right now... I'm meeting Miles.
Have you told him about Adam?
He's just so busy focusing on Ali right now, but once she's through surgery, I'll talk to him.
And what about the fact that he still loves you?
I've decided not to tell him that I know that.
We're just in such a good place right now.
I don't want to jeopardize it.
Okay. Ali's Bible was not in my room.
It must be here.
And you think that's what the God Account wants you to do?
Find her Bible? Oh, I don't know.
All I know is I need to find it and get it to her.
So you had no idea that Ali was gonna sign over power of attorney to Trish?
No. None of us did.
Yeah, I can't imagine that your dad took that well.
Yeah. He's, um, internalizing.
Not to mention the fact I told him Ali is my Friend Suggestion.
I just can't shake the feeling that Ali is hiding something.
Like what? I don't know.
Look, I know that these forms are standard, but I know my sister, and something was off.
That's why you called us down here.
You want me to do my thing.
What? No, Rakesh. I don't think that...
No, no, no. Rakesh is right.
Okay, if this was any other Friend Suggestion, we wouldn't hesitate. If something is going on with Ali, I need to know.
Yeah, I'll, uh, see what I can find out.
I've looked everywhere. The Bible isn't here.
Okay, well, if Ali lost her Bible, maybe the God Account wants you to replace it?
No, no, Ali doesn't just want any Bible.
She wants my mom's.
I mean, it's filled with notes and highlighted passages that were important to her.
What is it? It's Ali.
Hey, did you find it?
No, sorry. It's not in my apartment.
Could you check Honeysuckle?
I mean, that's the only other place it could be.
If it's not there, I must have lost it.
Okay. Okay, I'll call you soon.
I have to find her Bible before she goes into surgery.
Okay. Let's go check it out.
Cara and I made it to Honeysuckle and found Ali's Bible.
Turns out, finding it would change everything for me.
But before that could happen, I had to get back to Ali.
And that ended up being a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Don't worry. Miles will be here soon.
Yeah, there's still plenty of time.
Would you guys give us a minute?
I know you're upset about my decision.
I just thought, in this case, Trish was the right choice... for all of us.
I just wished...
That you'd talked about it with me first.
And what would you have said?
I don't know.
I'm sure I would've pushed back.
But I understand why you made the decision that you did.
I'm your father.
Right or wrong...
I could never let you go.
Do you remember when I was ten and had to have my appendix out?
I remember the doctor coming in and talking to you about having to get me into surgery right away.
When I asked you what was gonna happen, do you remember what you said?
I told you that the doctors were going to put you to sleep.
But... that when you woke up...
Everything was gonna be fine.
You promised me.
You said you'd be the first person I saw when I woke up.
I need you to make that promise again.
I need to hear it.
Everything is going to be okay.
I'm gonna be right here when you wake up... the very first person that you see.
Hey, we're gonna make it.
Hey, hey, Rakesh. You find anything?
Yeah, I saw on Ali's calendar that she had an appointment with a heart specialist last week.
Okay. So I spoke with a doctor I know about it, and I think I figured out why.
With any heart defect, even something as small as Ali's, there's an increased risk of complications during surgery.
Depends on the condition and the situation, but if she met with a specialist, there's obviously a concern.
So that's why Ali signed over the power of attorney to Trish.
She knew there was a risk!
What if this is why the God Account sent me her name?
What if Ali isn't supposed to have the surgery?
Rakesh? Rakesh? Miles... Miles...
Miles? Miles? Hello? Ra...
I lost him. Signal's d*ad.
It's okay. We're only a few stops away.
We'll be there in no time.
Miles? Miles, hey! Miles?
Are you okay?
Yeah, I think so. You sure?
I mean, you h*t your head really hard.
Uh, yeah. No, I'm... I'm fine.
Are you okay? Yeah, I'm okay.
What happened? I don't know.
The train just stopped.
Oh, hey. Hey, excuse me.
Excuse me. Are you okay?
Oh, here, here. Let me help you up.
There you go.
Uh, here. Use this to stop the bleeding.
Uh, is there anyone else injured on this train?
No. I'm fine.
Nothing, man. It's okay.
Thank you. We're good.
Okay, we need to call for help.
Do you have a signal? No. No signal.
Does anyone on this train have a signal?
I've got no signal. I can't call anyone.
Okay, no one has a signal, which means we can't reach anyone.
I'm sure they have a system in place for emergencies.
We should just sit tight.
No, we can't, okay?
There are people on this train that are injured, and I need to get back to the hospital to talk to Ali. We are running out of time!
Wait, the train operator's booth is up front.
Maybe we can figure out what's happening.
Excuse me. Excuse me.
Hey! Open up in there!
Hey, what's going on?
No luck. They're not answering.
They're probably on the radio, calling for help.
Maybe they're hurt. We need to get in there.
I'm telling you, man. I already tried.
The door's locked.
Excuse me. Can I borrow this?
Thank you. Stand back!
What's taking Miles so long?
I'm sure he'll be here any minute.
We still have over an hour until your surgery.
Bible or no Bible, God will hear your prayers.
Thank you, guys, for always being here for me.
Hi, Dr. Chang.
How are you feeling, Ali?
Uh, just a little anxious to get things started.
Well, you are in luck.
The O.R. opened up earlier than expected, and we're ready to go.
I'm gonna scrub in, and the nurses will be in shortly to start pre-op.
Okay, so... this is literally happening right now.
Just try and relax. You're gonna do great.
She's right. You are going to do great.
Okay, come on.
Come on. I got you.
I got you. I got you.
Come on. Right here.
Hey, you okay?
Yeah. All right.
Okay, everyone listen up!
I just spoken with someone with the MTA.
There's been some kind of construction accident.
The radio cut out, but they said something about a gas leak.
So we need to go.
Please, we are just asking you to follow us.
Miles, they're not listening. We need to do something.
I know, I know, I know. I just need to convince them.
Um, okay, okay! Listen up!
Look, I know that you don't know me.
But there is a gas leak.
Okay, I think they said something about evacuating.
It's too dangerous to go out on the track.
No, we stay here. They'll send help.
No, we can't wait.
We need you to come with us!
We need to get off of this train!
There's no way I'm leaving.
Please, sir. I'm just asking you to trust us.
We need to listen to him!
I was making my way through the cars to make sure everyone was okay, but here you are.
Seems like whenever I'm in a bad spot, you're here to rescue me.
Is what you're saying true?
Yes, I'm telling you, we cannot wait.
Now, a few months back, this man saved my daughter's life... and mine.
Hey. Hey, Miguel. Can you hear me?
I have no intention of being rescued.
You understand me?
If you make this look like an accident, your family can collect the insurance.
I got no other choice.
If I had, I would take it.
The money will kept my daughter alive until she can find a donor.
Any father would make that trade.
Actually, I have a better solution... one where your daughter lives and you're there to live that life with her.
Looks like you made good on your promise after all, Miles.
If you hadn't saved my life, I wouldn't be here to save hers.
I didn't know him... same as you.
He asked me to trust him, and I thank God every day I did.
So, if he's saying we need to go, then we need to go.
I ride this train every day.
We're less than 50 yards from the station.
Look, I know you're scared.
But if we stick together, we can make it.
What do you think? I mean...
Okay, okay. All right, let's go.
Hey, thank you.
All right, let's round up the rest of these people, and get out of here.
I can't believe we made it in time.
Yeah. I knew we would.
Wait. Where is everyone? I don't know.
Dad. What's going on? Where's Ali?
Miles, I tried calling you.
Her surgery got moved up.
Where have you been?
Look, Dad, it doesn't matter.
I found out that there's an increased risk to Ali's surgery because of her heart condition.
Now, I tried to get here as fast as I could to convince her to postpone... Miles...
Wait, wait, wait. Dad, look, I know how it sounds, but I think this is why the God Account sent me her name.
Son, I don't think it is.
How can you say that?
Because she told us about the risk before she went in for surgery.
I reacted the same way you are now.
Told her we have to postpone, get a second opinion.
What did she say? That she already gotten one.
I went to the doctor's with her, Miles.
They said that she was strong enough for surgery and that they'd monitor her heart along the way.
And postponing the surgery wasn't gonna take away the risk.
It was always gonna be there.
And the fact is, they need to remove the tumor now.
It's gonna be all right.
I just never got this to her.
Well, that's okay. You can give it to her when she wakes up. Mm-hmm.
All we can do now is... wait. Mm-hmm.
Hey, look, I know that you're worried, but everything they said makes sense.
This wasn't about stopping the surgery.
Okay, then what the hell was it about?
Look, whatever I was supposed to do for Ali, I couldn't.
And you know what makes matters even worse?
Is that it seems like the God Account was trying to stop me from getting back here in time.
I mean, what... what if... what if she...
Hey. No, no, no. No, don't say that.
Okay, Ali is going to be fine.
And like your dad said, you're gonna be here when she gets out.
That's all that matters.
Miles, we are gonna get through this together.
Wait. Jaya, what are you doing here?
Rakesh came by my office earlier to ask about Ali.
So you're the doctor he went to for help.
Well, smartest one I know, so...
How's everything with Ali?
Um, they moved her surgery up.
She's in there now.
So where have you guys been?
It's kind of a long story.
I can't believe it. Miguel Solano was on the train?
Okay, look, I know it's kind of pointless to say "what are the odds?" when dealing with the God Account, but seriously, like, what are the odds?
Anyways, we made it to safety.
Before we came here, Miguel told me that being on the subway with him was proof that God's behind the God Account.
And then Miguel said that I was like Jonah, and the subway was my whale.
Yeah, he even called Miles a prophet.
Wow. I really have missed a lot.
No, no. I am no prophet, okay?
I am still the same atheist you all know and love.
What is it?
The God Account just liked a Bible verse...
What does that verse say?
I don't remember, and, honestly, I don't care right now.
Miles, you've been carrying around a Bible all day.
You're seriously not even gonna look?
I didn't read the passage, but look.
It's a letter addressed to me.
It's from Ali.
Miles... what if that's why Ali wanted you to get the Bible?
Um, hey, we're gonna give you some space.
Dear Miles, I thought a lot about what I wanted to say to you before my surgery, but I realized it might be better to write it down.
This way, you can't interrupt me, and I get the last word.
Facing a surgery like this makes you think about everything.
What I want moving forward, what I hope for, and not just for me, but for Dad and for you.
It gives me comfort to know Dad has Trish, and you have Cara and Rakesh... people that love you, that will always take care of you.
And I'm not saying these will be my last words to you.
I put my faith in God that they won't.
But if they are, I just want you to know that I hope you never lose your sense of wonder, and that you promise to keep your heart open to all possibilities.
Is everything okay?
I'm afraid not. There has been a complication.
During surgery, Ali suffered a massive pulmonary embolism due to a blood clot.
She's still intubated.
We have given her blood thinners to dissolve the clot.
What does that mean? Is she gonna be okay?
We don't know.
Does this have anything to do with her heart condition?
No, this is totally unrelated.
Clots like this can form in cancer patients due to chemo and other factors.
Unfortunately, they can rear their heads during surgery.
Now, we managed to remove the tumor, and there's no sign of the cancer spreading.
The clot didn't occur till we were finishing the procedure.
Okay, so... what happens next?
Now we wait and see if the blood thinners do their job.
And if they don't?
I don't want to go there yet.
These next few hours are critical, but we are doing everything possible for her.
As soon as I have an update, I'll let you know.
Thank you, Doctor.
Sorry. I need a minute.
I'll be right back.
Dad, we can't lose her. I know, son.
Dad, you know, I-I-I should've been here.
I should've stopped it, but I wasn't...
This is not your fault.
There is no way anyone could have prevented this.
But we are not going to lose her.
No, you don't know that.
Maybe I don't.
But I have faith.
Faith... that is not going to help her get through this.
It's times like these, I wish I could give you your faith back so that you could see that there is hope, that there is something you can do to help yourself get through this and to help Ali get through it.
What can I possibly do to help her?
The same thing I'm gonna do.
Dad... I know how you feel.
But prayer is action.
And prayer is what your sister needs right now.
How's he doing?
He's scared... just like all of us.
Is there anything I can do to help?
Well, she's gonna be okay.
Uh, I'm gonna go get coffee for everyone.
I could use a walk. I'll show you where it is.
Please, do not tell me that she is going to be okay or not to worry.
This is the most scared I've been in my whole life.
It just doesn't make sense that the God Account sent you Ali's name.
What are you talking about?
Well, that means there must be some way for you to help her, right?
I just can't figure out what it could be.
Miles, where are you going?
I don't know.
For the last few months, the God Account has been pushing me towards the idea of reclaiming my faith.
It all started with Anna.
You were right, Miles.
I needed to make my peace with what happened.
I realized I never lost my faith.
It just took you to remind me of that.
Now I'm not scared of anything... not even dying.
Why would the God Account send me Anna's name if it knew it was gonna end up like this?
Maybe it's not just about restoring Anna's faith.
Maybe the God Account wanted you to know that it's never too late... that faith will be there if you ever need it.
And then my atheist hero had a crisis of faith and offered his theory of who was behind the God Account.
You know, I've been thinking a lot about who's behind it.
Oh, that is the million-dollar question.
What if the answer's been staring at you the whole time?
What are you saying?
Maybe the only difference between God and the God Account is one word...
As I sat in the church thinking about what my dad said, I realized I had nowhere else to turn.
So I asked for help.
And that's when I got a call from my dad.
Dad, what happened? What did the doctor say?
Well, I haven't heard anything since I called you other than Dr. Chang is gonna be right out.
Where did you go?
Nowhere. I just needed to clear my head.
It's good news.
The blood thinners worked.
Yeah, the clot dissolved, and Ali's out of sedation.
She's in recovery and alert.
You can see her now.
Yes! Oh, my God.
Oh, I told you.
You kept your promise.
I am so proud of you, sis.
Dr. Chang said that they got all of the cancer... and that you will make a full recovery.
I'm sorry I didn't get this to you in time.
You found my letter?
I hope it helped.
I'm just glad you're okay.
Honestly, I don't know what you guys were worried about.
Sometimes the things we hope for in life don't always turn out the way we expect.
But that doesn't mean we give up.
Doesn't mean we stop fighting...
Because you never know where that road may lead.
To the long-awaited celebration that finally arrives...
To the ending of one chapter that brings us to the next.
Hey. What are you guys doing here?
I thought you were supposed to be on your way to the airport?
We are, but Liv had to say good-bye one last time.
Remember, FaceTime once a week.
Mm, more like twice.
Hey, tell your dad I'll be right down, okay?
Cara... thank you.
For finding me.
Having you back in my life these last two years, getting to know the amazing woman you've become, it's been the second chance I never thought I'd get.
Yeah. Me too.
Okay, one last piece of advice from Mom before I go.
Okay. About Miles.
Be honest with him.
Take it from me... nothing thr*at a family more than keeping secrets.
For Cara, that meant being honest with me.
She told me about Adam, and we both agreed that we should just remain friends.
But after a few months, our feelings blossomed into something more, something stronger than it had ever been.
We fell back in love.
And I am happy to say, we have been together ever since.
And we aren't the only ones who started anew.
Rakesh and Jaya got back together.
And this time when he proposed, she said yes.
And with Ali healthy, life finally got back to normal.
She even found her calling.
She joined the seminary and followed in our dad's footsteps.
The journey of helping my Friend Suggestions changed so many lives.
It taught me to have hope and faith in humanity... to believe in others...
But, more importantly, it changed me... and helped me rediscover something I had lost when my mother d*ed.
And it made me realize it doesn't matter what we believe... or where we come from.
That we are all in this together.
And we can all be there for one another, because when we are, amazing things can happen.
I always wondered what really happened that night I went to the church.
Was it all a coincidence Ali got better?
Or did something greater happen?
Turns out, the God Account left me a clue to that answer.
You remember the like I got... Jeremiah 29:11?
"For I know the plans I have for you.
You will seek me and find me with all your heart."
And a year to the day I got Ali as a Friend Suggestion...
I got a message from the God Account... to come to this mountain to finally get my answer.
And that's how I ended up here.
She's been waiting for you.
