NEWSWOMAN: Good morning, New Orleans.

Here's the international update.

Mardi Gras was just a few short weeks ago, and the world has changed, seemingly overnight.

Entire countries in Europe are shutting down, while the governors of both California and New York have enacted stay-at-home orders.

But still the virus shows no signs of stopping, making those of us in New Orleans wonder, are we next?

Now, let's...

What kind of question is that?

"Are we next?" We're already in it.

You think the city's gonna shut down?

I think they don't have a choice.

We don't know what's gonna happen yet, Jasmine.

So it's just best to take precautions, wash your hands...

It's Van Cleef.

Whoa.

Full-court press.

What do we got?

Suspicious death of a Lieutenant Paula Cooke on a humanitarian ship.

Yeah, it's a mercy ship run by an NGO called Eternal Hope.

They run missions to medical hotspots all around the world.

PRIDE: What's a Navy lieutenant doing

- on a civilian ship?

- GREGORIO: Research.

Eternal Hope's missions have been very successful over the years.

DoD tried to contract with them.

He sent Lieutenant Cooke to study their methods.

The Good Hope was on its way to Central America when the pandemic hit.

It turned around to return here to offer support.

And Lieutenant Cooke?

Well, she went overboard.

Nobody knows how or why.

CARTER: The ship's anchored at sea awaiting instructions.

Coast Guard's shorthanded, so they asked us to assist.

Okay.

Why don't you take Gregorio and go check it out.

- Okay.

- Oh, you know what, I can go with him instead.

Oh.

That's sweet, pumpkin, but...

Yeah, I know she hates boats.

I'm actually kind of relieved she didn't take me up on it.

All out of seasick patches, and I'm terrified to go in any pharmacy right now.

Or anywhere.

I sound really paranoid, right?

Actually, you sound less paranoid than normal, considering what's been on the news.

You need to be prepared.

Yeah, well, luckily, I've been preparing for an event like this my whole life.

- Isn't that your hurricane kit?

- Yeah.

But I added a face shield, masks, gloves.

Now it is a pandemic kit.

Made one for each of us.

Oh, well, thank you.

Nice.

You might want to think about getting one to Loretta, sooner rather than later.

All right, Doc.

GREGORIO: Special Agents Gregorio and Carter.

Captain Granger.

Welcome aboard.

Nancy McLane.

I'm the medical director for Eternal Hope.

In the interests of getting your ship moving again, I say we get right to it.

Can you tell us about Lieutenant Cooke?

Well, no one knows exactly.

Night watchman saw something go into the water, - hit the MOB alarm.

- I did CPR when they got her back on deck, but she was already gone.

Likely the jump k*lled her.

Jump?

You think she k*lled herself?

Railing is four foot high.

Lieutenant Cooke was five foot four.

Accident seems unlikely.

Well, can you show us where she went overboard?

It's over here.

GREGORIO: Who knows about her death?

We tried to keep what happened quiet as possible, but...

Nothing stays secret on a ship... for long.

Watchman said she went over about here.

About what time?

Little before midnight.

Why was she on deck that late?

No idea.

We were all in bed.

She was supposed to be, too.

I agree.

This doesn't look like an accident.

It's blood.

Yeah.

And if it was an accident, there'd be no need to clean that up.

Someone definitely tried to clean it up.

We need to see Lieutenant Cooke's body.

Follow me.

Where are you keeping her?

The Good Hope is outfitted to be a modified medical facility.

We have a sick bay, a functioning lab and a small refrigeration unit.

- A morgue?

- Medical missions we take are to the worst hotspots.

Death is a reality.

(DOOR CREAKS, MAN SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

Federal agents!

Stop!

(PANTING): Any idea who that was?

What's in here?

That's engineering storage.

(COUGHING)

What the hell is this?

What is this?

MULLINS: Grant and I founded Eternal Hope ten years ago after the earthquake in Haiti led to a cholera outbreak.

We offer support during the worst medical crises.

Right now that crisis is in the U.S.

We have several metric tons of supplies that should be offloading at the Port of New Orleans.

Instead, the ship is anchored miles offshore.

Because NCIS is investigating a possible m*rder.

As well as the cover-up of three crew members who have come down with a respiratory illness that looks a hell of a lot like COVID.

Thousands of health care workers are running low on PPE in New Orleans hospitals.

We can help.

I don't understand why you're being so obtuse while people are literally dying in your streets.

We take Lieutenant Cooke's death and the sick crew very seriously and intend to cooperate fully.

Okay.

Anyone on the Good Hope have a reason to k*ll Lieutenant Cooke?

We operate three mercy ships full of hardworking, dedicated people who have saved thousands of lives over the last ten years.

They wouldn't hurt anyone.

And yet, she's dead.

Gonna need access to your records.

Both on the ship and on land.

Of course.

Jason and I are in D.C.

catching a flight back to New Orleans.

But we'll alert our staff.

- You'll get what you need.

- Appreciate it.

Can you give me any idea when the Good Hope can move again?

(SIGHS)

I honestly can't.

So they cancelled my flight, but I got a line on a connecting flight through Rome.

It's got a layover...

Six hours in New York.

RYAN: Hannah, please.

It's not safe in New York or Rome, or anywhere really.

Well, what do you expect me to do?

Nothing.

I'm taking Naomi to my parents in Kent.

What?

No.

Ryan, you have to talk to me about these things first, okay?

I'm talking to you now, but things are moving fast, and it's safer than the other alternatives.

(SIGHS)

Okay.

Uh, no.

That's...

It's...

You're right.

It's a good idea.

I'm gonna get a flight to England.

I think you should stay there.

I'll take good care of Naomi.

I got to go.

He's right, you know.

You probably shouldn't travel.

I can't leave Naomi alone.

Look, I understand the parental tug.

But Naomi's not alone.

She's with her dad.

Just keep that in mind as you decide what you want to do.

Meantime, I got Gregorio on the big screen.

- Want to join?

- Mm-hmm.

Tell us things.

We're on a floating petri dish.

Three crew members appear to have COVID, which means the entire ship was exposed, including us.

Is it... is it possible that Lieutenant Cooke was k*lled because she knew about the sick crew that was hidden, so that they could dock in New Orleans without being quarantined?

Don't know.

We don't even know if she was m*rder*d yet.

Doing a virtual autopsy with Wade to confirm.

Let us know the results soon as you can.

(BEEPS OFF)

I get that the outbreak is bad PR, but it seems like a pretty thin motive for m*rder, especially from a humanitarian organization.

What can I do?

Figure out if you're traveling or not.

Make sure your family's safe.

(PHONE RINGING)

I got this.

Hey, Jaques, what's going on?

No.

Since when?

Yeah, okay.

Thanks for letting me know.

Hang in there.

Mayor just announced that all the New Orleans bars and restaurants are to shut down immediately.

I'm looking for anything you can spare.

Body bags, cleaning supplies, personnel.

No, I know you're busy there, too.

Uh, look.

I'll take anything you got.

Except bodies.

I have no space, Roger.

What am I supposed to do?

Well, first, pull up your mask.

Ah, what happened to the fresh ones I gave you?

This is a fresh one, or was.

I handed the rest out to the crew.

- I'll get some more.

- No need, Doc.

This is my last drop-off.

Then I'm home for the night.

Unless, of course, I have to find a home for him.

They're ready for us.

Uh... all right, wheel him in.

I'll have to take care of some business first, and then I'll find a home for him.

Appreciate it, Doc.

Hope you get a break soon, too.

Hmm.

We have three symptomatic crew members on board.

No clue how many others.

I'm assuming you've quarantined the non-essential crew?

We have, but the captain still needs about ten to keep the ship running.

Gloves and masks on them then.

Way ahead of you.

I'd feel better if you were in your berths, too.

Berth, Wade, as in one room, if that's what you can even call it.

Gregorio's unhappy with the living arrangements.

Gregorio's unhappy that she didn't bring a change of clothes.

So what?

So you wear the same clothes for a few days, like every weekend ever.

(CHUCKLES)

Look, we'll be happy to stay hunkered down, provided we're not looking at a m*rder here.

Unfortunately, I think you are, based on the lacerations on Lieutenant Cooke's head and neck.

That could be a result of the fall.

Most of them, yes.

But on the head?

Take a closer look with the camera.

The watchman heard her hit the side of the ship on her way overboard.

Yeah.

This doesn't look like blunt force trauma.

No.

Looks like some kind of a foreign object.

You know, if you get me some, uh, high-res digital photos, I can create a -D model of the wound, maybe identify the m*rder w*apon.

Sorry to interrupt.

I've identified the men running away from the sick crew.

Both engineers.

Okay, well, as good a place to start as any.

- Hey.

- PATTON: Hey.

Figured you'd be rushing off to the airport by now.

Yeah, I'm rerouting through England.

I thought I'd help you while I wait.

I've been going through Eternal Hope's records.

They sent me over ten years of files.

Did you learn anything?

They're registered not for profit, with a $ million budget.

Big money means big opportunity for kickbacks.

Organizations like Eternal Hope subcontract out to a lot of for-profit companies for support and supplies.

New intern?

I'm sorry, Hannah.

That's my goddaughter Donna.

I'm keeping an eye on her while her mother's out of town.

She's a traveling nurse in New York helping with the surge.

Don't you have an English presentation in the morning?

A virtual report to a virtual teacher who probably won't be paying attention.

Well, um, what your mom is doing in New York is really brave.

You must be proud.

Oh, yeah, I love being pawned off while she's out fighting a deadly virus that could k*ll her.

Manners.

Sorry.

Yes, ma'am, I'm very proud.

Ordinarily, we'd question the two of you separately, but under the circumstances...

(SPEAKING FRENCH)

He wants to know why we're here.

Because I saw the two of you run away from a room filled with sick crew.

And we're wondering why.

No mystery.

We were checking on our friends...

That's very nice, but it doesn't explain the running.

CARTER: What it does explain is that you were hiding those sick men.

All three of them are engineers, and from what we understand, you've worked with them for years.

Hey, like I said, our friends.

Who are very sick and who needed medical attention on a ship full of doctors.

Yeah.

Why didn't you just alert the captain?

(SPEAKING FRENCH)

All right.

We didn't want to make a fuss.

Yeah, I don't think that's what he just said.

You were afraid to alert the captain, right?

Because you knew there was a pandemic, and if word got out that your friends were sick, the ship wouldn't be allowed to dock.

All-all right, listen.

No one wants to be stuck here less than me right now.

Okay, I'd do just about anything to get back to dry land.

But we're wondering what you'd be willing to do.

Let's say someone found out about those sick men.

Someone like Lieutenant Cooke.

The woman that fell overboard?

- She was thrown.

- m*rder*d.

m*rder?

He understands that word.

(SPEAKING FRENCH)

(SPEAKING FRENCH)

Lieutenant Cooke was down here with someone else.

She was yelling, and then she was running...

Down here where?

(SPEAKING FRENCH)

Well, it's not much to go on.

The call came from a prepaid cell phone.

I can't trace it, but it did ping off a tower by the river.

The caller said that she wasn't the first to die, and wouldn't be the last.

That's ominous, if not helpful.

None of the other ships Eternal Hope operates have had any problems.

Maybe he was referring to the COVID patients.

I'll look into Eternal Hope's employee records, see if anything comes up as whistleblower material.

You know, I'm gonna try a few more tricks.

I'm gonna track down that cell phone.

No more stale coffee or prepackaged breakfast bars.

I need some real food in my body, and an actual shower.

I thought you were New York tough.

Don't start with me, Quentin.

Can I help you?

I remember you.

I interviewed you yesterday.

Cargo mate, right?

Cargo mate's a boss.

I work for a living.

Okay.

Is there anything you can tell me about Lieutenant Cooke's death?

I know why you're really here.

It's got nothing to do with the dead lady.

Oh, yeah?

You came here...

to shut us down and keep us quiet.

Delivering a corona death warrant to everybody onboard.

Mm.

And the messed-up part...

You're k*lling yourself.

You do it with a smile, Makes perfect sense.

DoD has nothing better to do than to send in two highly trained agents to a medium-sized ship in the Gulf to make sure a hundred people get COVID and die.

Well, which part isn't true?

We're in the middle of the ocean.

Can't dock.

Can't move.

And no one's coming to rescue us.

You can call me names all you want, but this...

it's the ship of the damned.

You're just as screwed as the rest of us.

What was that about?

Dude thinks we're all gonna die out here, and I'm fighting real hard not to see his logic.

Where's my coffee?

Something better.

Probably tastes the same.

Saw it hooked to the wall when I went below deck.

But looks like that picture Sebastian sent us, doesn't it?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Asked the bosun's mate about it.

Turns out these are positioned all over the ship.

Including the cargo deck.

Could be our m*rder w*apon.

Yeah.

CARTER: We searched the lower decks looking for a similar wrench.

And we found about a dozen.

But closer to the cargo deck, we found this one.

Only partially secure in its casing.

Like someone put it back in a rush?

Looks pretty clean to me.

Well, whoever took it, washed it down.

However...

CARTER: This is the k*ller's w*apon.

See the blood spatter?

We weren't able to pull a print.

We'll see what other analysis we can run with the supplies on the ship here.

All right, well, keep me posted.

GREGORIO: Hey, Pride, any idea when we can get back to dry land?

I wish I had an answer for you.

But with the possibility of COVID on the ship, they-they just won't let you dock.

I promise you, though, I'll get you back, even if I have to commandeer a boat and get you myself.

(SIGHS)

Looking for some answers, P.

All I can tell you is, civics is boring.

Donna, hey.

How you doing?

It was purchased two blocks from Eternal Hope's New Orleans headquarters.

So likely, he works there.

Pulled up security footage from the bank across the street.

This is Darin Collinsworth.

He's the logistics manager at Eternal Hope.

He worked there for ten years.

Since the beginning.

Except, he hasn't been in the office for two days.

However, I have his home address.

Well, that's good work, P.

Thank you.

- All right, this is the place.

- Okay.

- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

- (GRUNTS)

Where you going, girl?

We got to suit up.

Well, I don't feel like we need to get tactical to pick up a logistics specialist.

I'm not talking flak jackets.

I'm talking PPE.

Oh, yeah, I got a mask.

- You have a bandana.

- Yeah.

This is the real deal.

Okay.

Okay.

There we go.

I only got one of these.

Sorry.

Pretty steampunk, though, right?

The steampunkiest.

- Right?

- Let's go.

Darin Collinsworth?

Federal agents.

Open up.

- (LOUD THUDDING)

- Someone's moving in there.

(GLASS CLINKING)

(GRUNTS)

(COLLINSWORTH COUGHING)

He was trying to get out the window.

Wait, wait.

Hannah!

Hannah!

(COUGHING, WHEEZING)

I think he's infected.

(COUGHING CONTINUES)

Darin Collinsworth is in the ICU at St.

Augustus Hospital.

So our whistleblower can't fill in any blanks about what ties Eternal Hope to Lieutenant Cooke's m*rder?

SEBASTIAN: No, but there was a stockpile of masks, canned soup, and a file box filled with Eternal Hope paperwork.

Mostly medical records from old mercy missions, financials.

And there are quite a few expenditures with no clear indication of where the money went.

Half a million mystery dollars.

Founding partners at Eternal Hope have been hard to reach, but neither of them were on that ship when Lieutenant Cooke was k*lled.

So our suspect's still here.

SEBASTIAN: You guys get anything else off of the m*rder w*apon?

No.

Re-canvass the ship.

Focus on direct employees of Eternal Hope.

If somebody was stealing at headquarters, they might be paying somebody on the ship to help 'em cover it up.

That's gonna be tricky, Pride.

Six more crew got sick today.

Everyone but essentials supposed to stay in their berths.

Yeah.

Well, do what you can.

Stay safe.

(CALL BEEPS OFF)

(PHONE CHIMES)

Hmm.

Patrol officer at St. Augustus Hospital just had to forcibly remove Mullins from the lobby.

He was trying to get in to see our whistleblower.

(SIRENS BLARING)

(INDISTINCT CHATTER)

All right, I got it, guys.

Special Agent Pride, can you explain to these men I haven't broken any laws?

You tried to gain access to the ICU.

I'm a doctor.

I wanted to see if I could help Darin.

Well, plenty of other doctors are doing that.

I've known the man for ten years.

His family can't see him.

Didn't want him to be alone.

Yeah, well, that's admirable.

You think there's more to it?

Darin Collinsworth reached out to me the other night.

He said that Lieutenant Cooke's death was not the only one connected to Eternal Hope.

I don't know how to respond to that.

All right, well, I'll give you more.

Collinsworth had files at his apartment.

Medical and financial records from Eternal Hope's missions overseas.

If Darin thought there was a problem, he would have come to me.

Unless you were part of the problem.

My team found evidence of missing money.

And that's why you think someone k*lled your sailor?

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

$ , to be precise.

Yeah.

I'm aware.

So is everyone else at Eternal Hope.

We're an NGO that travels to Third World countries to provide medical care and supplies.

Often in remote areas.

We deal with government corruption, militias.

- Bandits.

- Payoff money.

Literally the cost of doing business.

Industry practice.

We'll be happy to let you know where every penny of that cash went.

I'll need to see that.

Eternal Hope is being completely aboveboard with you.

We're on your side.

Someone k*lled Lieutenant Cooke on your ship.

And the man in that hospital told me there's more to the story.

Think it's fair to say that not everyone is on our side.

CARTER: We just need a few minutes to talk.

MCLANE: I can't.

I have confirmed sick, and probably double that by tomorrow.

Hey, we know you got your hands full, but we are talking to everyone who's directly employed by Eternal Hope.

You and the medical team in there are our last interviews.

And you think one of us k*lled Lieutenant Cooke over money?

- How did you...?

- It's a ship.

No secrets, remember?

But I can tell you that everyone who works for Eternal Hope is dedicated to healing people.

No doubt.

But we know cash is used for payoff money.

Maybe some of it doesn't get to where it's supposed to.

We go into hot zones without knowing if we're gonna come out.

Nobody does this job to get rich.

Darin Collinsworth said something else is going on, and that's what got Lieutenant Cooke k*lled.

Then you should talk to him.

He's on a ventilator.

Look, I appreciate that you are trying to find a k*ller.

It's important work, but right now, secondary to mine.

Dr. McLane...

I am also trying to find a k*ller, except mine is invisible and has the capacity to take out every single person on this ship, including you.

So if you know what's good for you, you'll go back to your berth and stay there.

Excuse me.

I've got work to do.

(RHYTHMIC BEEPING AND WHOOSHING)

Oh.

Please don't tell me you need something.

I literally have nothing left to give.

No, no.

I'm here for you.

Just wanted to see if you needed any help.

Could you stop these folks from dying?

Put a pause on this whole thing?

No.

But I can make a really good cup of tea.

You usually like it when I do that.

That's sweet, Sebastian.

I'll tell you what I could really use.

- What's that?

Cookies?

- A refrigerated truck.

For the overflow.

I'm on it.

(SIGHS)

No.

Roger.

Old fool.

(SIGHS HEAVILY)

HANNAH: So the house is good?

Yeah?

They made a nice room for you?

NAOMI: Mm.

It smells like wet wood.

(SIGHS)

That's okay.

You'll get used to it.

Are you okay, Mom?

(SIGHS)

Yeah, baby, I'm fine.

I'm just glad you and Dad made it safe and sound.

We're okay.

I just...

What if I don't get to see you again?

Oh, baby, of course you're gonna see me again.

(LAUGHS)

(VOICE BREAKING): This is just a moment in time.

Your dad's taking really good care of you.

(CLEARS THROAT)

And I'm taking good care of me.

(SNIFFLES)

And we will see each other soon.

Yeah, that's a promise.

Okay?

Okay.

Love you, Mom.

(CLICKS)

What is going on here?

(SIGHS)

I had an idea.

Yeah.

Stockpiling?

- (CHUCKLES)

- I think you went overboard.

We don't need all this.

It's not for us.

Earlier today, Joe Ricky came in.

Works oyster bar at Felix's?

Yeah.

He got laid off.

He got nothing but empty cupboards and three kids.

So you, uh... thought you'd help him out?

Yeah.

Not just him.

See, our suppliers got all this food that's gonna go bad.

People need help.

I told Ricky to spread the word to all the restaurant workers.

Anybody else who needs help in the area.

It's kind of brilliant.

And expensive.

(LAUGHS)

Put your money away, brother.

I'm all in.

Let's help folks.

(LAUGHS)

(SIGHS)

Oh, if you really feel that way, go grab the last stack of boxes from the car.

My arms are feeling rubbery.

Yeah, you rest.

(LAUGHS)

(DOOR SQUEAKS OPEN)

(SIGHS): Ah.

(LOUD CRASH)

Where are we in such a rush to get?

We're gonna take another look at the cargo deck.

Whatever happened to Lieutenant Cooke started there.

We're gonna retrace her steps.

Do you think something's missing?

I wouldn't be surprised.

And anyway, we're stuck here.

What else are we gonna do?

(FLAMES RUMBLING, GLASS BREAKING)

- Oh.

You okay?

- Yeah.

- (ALARM BELL RINGING)

- (GROANING)
