Hey, is this thing on?
[Sid chuckles]
* hey, sid, what do you say?
What do you want to learn today?
* I want to know why things
happen and how
And I want to know everything
now, oh, yeah!
How does this thing work?
Why does that stuff change?
How does that do
what it just did? Hmm
What's up with the sky?
You think I could fly?
The world is spinning
and I want to know why
I got a lot of questions
and big ideas
I'm sid the science kid *
[snorting and spitting]
Oh, hi, I'm sid. Huh. Ok, I'm
gonna get right to it. I have a
Problem with this whole teeth
brushing thing. See, it all
Started when mom said I can't
have too much sugary food,
Especially my favorite cereal,
super sugar munch crunchers. And
I love them! Aah!
* You can't munch crunch
just bowl *
Yeah. Ahh. But I guess munch
crunchers are kind of bad for my
Teeth. Mom and dad keep on
telling me I have to brush my
Teeth twice a day. Twice, dr.
Beaks. Wha-cha! Ha ha! Then I
Have to brush again and rinse
and also brush my gums and my
Tongue and my teeth again and
then rinse again! Whew! Man!
When I'm done, it's almost time
to start brushing all over
Again. Ahh...
You have teeth, right? Yeah, so
you know what I'm going through.
Now, I just really got to know.
Hmm, what would happen if I just
didn't brush my teeth?
["Teeth" echoes]
sid, breakfast time!
Huh? Oh, cool. Ha ha! Got to
go eat. Oh, boy. Ha ha!
Breakfast time!
Yeah, ha ha!
Yeah! Mm-mm.
Good morning, sid.
Hey, mom.
What kind of cereal would you
like for breakfast?
Oh, let me think for a
second. How about super sugar
Munch crunchers? Ha!
* You can't munch crunch just
bowl, yeah *
Well, let's see, you had
munch crunchers about a week
Ago, so, ok, you can have them.
Yay!
But then you have to brush
really well.
Huh. Well, you know, I've
been thinking, I'm kind of tired
Of brushing my teeth.
Excuse me.
Sid, brushing your teeth is
really important.
Huh?
Here, I'll show you what I
mean. Um...um...
Eh?
Wait a minute. And...
Ahh...
Ok.
What I'm saying is that you
want to keep your teeth healthy
And strong so you can eat all
that stuff. Wow. I am really
Full. Oh...
Uh, ok. Well, I get it, but
I'm still not sure why we have
To brush again and again and
again every day.
That sounds like something to
investigate at school. And don't
Forget, gabriella's coming over
for a play date today.
Yes! I love play dates with
gabriella. And she's gonna
Investigate teeth brushing with
me. Ah...
* I love my mom
] * uh-huh
* My mom is cool
* uh-huh
* But now it's time
for having fun at school, yeah *
Ha ha!
Hi.
* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
There's gabriella *
* watch what I can do
Uh-huh, yeah! Ready, set, go!
Wow!
* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you *
Hey, there's gerald!
Yeah, check out my moves!
Ha ha! I'm a rock star!
Yeah! Ha! Ya-hoo!
Cool!
Go!
* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
Hey, there's mae *
* may I show you how I
Groove? *
Ha ha!
Woo-hoo!
Groovy!
* We are looking
for our friends
We're looking for you
hey, there's sid *
Did you hear the one about
the kid who wanted to know
Everything about everything?
That's you!
* You got me
* we're looking
For our friends
and look who we found
We found each other
friends *
Hello, I am sid, roving
reporter with today's survey.
The question: do you like
brushing your teeth? And you can
Think about brushing your teeth,
too. Let's go get some answers.
Ha ha! Hello, gabriella. Do you
like brushing your teeth?
Oh, I really like brushing my
teeth because I have a special
Purple toothbrush with pink
polka-dots.
Wow, that sounds polka-dotty.
Ha ha!
Zoom! Zoom!
Ha ha!
Come on there, matey, let's
blast this rocket ship to the
Moon!
Ok, rocket ship gerald is
blasting away! Zoom!
Hey, lieutenant gerald and
commander mae, I have a question
For both of you: do you like
brushing your teeth? Gerald?
Oh, well, um, yeah, I like
brushing my teeth like this...
Yeah, but sometimes when I eat
broccoli and it gets stuck right
Here on my teeth, then--then
brushing can be hard.
Yeah, I hear ya there,
gerald. How about you, mae? Do
You like brushing your teeth?
I do, because I just lost a
tooth, see?
Where?
Right here. I like brushing
the empty space so it doesn't
Get yucky.
Wow, cool, mae. Thanks.
You're welcome.
Now it's time to blast off!
Ok! Vroom! Vroom!
Vroom! Ha ha! And now it's
time for the results of my
Survey. Gabriella likes brushing
with her purple toothbrush with
Pink polka-dots. Gerald likes
brushing but not when the
Broccoli gets stuck in his
teeth. And mae likes brushing
The space where she lost a
tooth. Maybe you've thought
About brushing your teeth, too.
And there you have it. I am sid,
roving reporter and teeth
Brushing expert.
Everybody, rug time!
That's teacher susie!
* It's rug time
come on in, rug time
Take a seat, rug time *
* we are ready
* Everybody move your feet
rug time *
* Teacher susie
* good times on the way
Rug time, come on in
you've got a lot
To learn today *
whoosh! Whoosh! Triple toe
Loop. Double lutz spinner!
Wow! Gerald's, like, a good
ice skater. Look at him go!
I'm going for the gold!
I've got a quadruple spinning
twisty! Whoa!
I give you . .
Thanks, sid.
So, what's on your mind
today?
Ooh! Ooh!
Gabriella?
My teeth are on my mind.
Me, too. On the playground,
we were talking about brushing
Our teeth.
Susie, I know we're supposed
to brush our teeth, but why do
We have to brush every day?
Oh, good question, sid. Let
me find some teeth and
I'll show ya!
Huh? Find some teeth?
Ah, found some!
Cool.
Well, a picture of teeth.
Oh, I get you.
You see, it's important to
brush your teeth every day so
You don't get a cavity like
this one.
Oh...
A cavity is a hole in your
tooth, right?
Exactly, gabriella. If you
don't brush your teeth, the food
We leave behind on your teeth
can help bacteria grow, and that
Can make a cavity.
Oh, no. Does it hurt to have
a cavity?
Well, cavities can hurt, but
a dentist can fix cavities and
Make you feel much better.
Ahh...
Hey, guess what?
What?
I just went to the dentist
yesterday, and I don't have
Any cavities.
Yay!
Susie!
Thank you. I didn't get any
cavities because I take good
Care of my teeth.
Yeah. We have to be nice to
our teeth because they help us
Chew. Nyeh nyeh! Ha ha!
And crunch and munch. I guess
teeth work hard.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Say, how do teeth do all
that work?
Good question, sid. Do any of
you know a good place to
Investigate our teeth?
Oh, in the super fab lab!
That's right. Grab your
journals and let's go!
Go!
Super fab lab! Investigate,
explore, discover!
Ah!
I call today's investigation
teeth time!
Ha ha!
The best way to see what
teeth actually do is to look at
Them, then use them.
Ah-ha!
Nyeh nyeh!
Ha ha!
My teeth are ready.
Ok, first we'll observe the
different kinds of teeth we have
In our mouths with these dental
mirrors.
Wow...
Neat...
They're small round mirrors
that real dentists use.
Then we can look
at each other's teeth to see
What they look like.
Oh, what a cute little
mirror. Oh, and what a cute
Little mae. Hi, mae. I see you!
Ha ha! And then, after we
look at our different kinds of
Teeth, you're going to use your
teeth to bite and chew
Some food.
Oh, yeah, all right! I love
yummy investigation!
Your job is to compare and
contrast how your different
Teeth work. Ok, let's begin our
teeth time investigation.
Ok.
Hey, you're a scientist. You
can try this, too.
Today we're going to explore
the different kinds of teeth
We have in our mouths. Your
front teeth are called incisors.
And next to your incisors you
have pointy teeth called
Canines. Look at your teeth that
are way in the back. Those teeth
Are your molars. Now let's
explore our teeth and use them
To find out their different
jobs. If you need to bite
Something soft like a banana,
what teeth do you use? That's
Right, you use your front
incisor teeth.
Ok, let's explore what teeth
you'd use to bite something
Harder like a carrot. Mmm, it
looks like you all used your
Canine teeth, your side teeth.
Those canines are good for
biting through really crunchy
Food. And once you've bitten
through the crunchy carrot, you
Can use your back molars to chew
it up. Let's compare and
Contrast how your different
teeth work. It's hard to bite
Into a carrot with your front
incisors, but it's much easier
With your pointy canine teeth.
Ok, time to draw some
observations in your journals.
You can draw pictures
of the foods you ate.
And really think about which
teeth you use to bite and chew
Up the food.
Wow! I never knew I had all
those different kinds of teeth
In my mouth.
Ha ha. You sure do. Hey,
let's see what other teeth
Discoveries you made. Gabriella,
can we see your journal?
Ok. First, I ate a piece of
banana. I used my front teeth,
And it was really easy to chew
it. And then I bit into the
Apple. I had to use my pointy
teeth to bite it in half.
And then I bit the carrot with
my pointy teeth, and chewed it
Up with my back teeth. Great
job, teeth!
Boy, your teeth did
do a great job. Ok, sid,
How about yours?
Sure. Let's see. We used
those little mirrors and saw
That my front teeth are kind of
shaped like squares. My side
Teeth are all pointy. And my
back teeth look like they're
Squares with little teeny, tiny
bumpy hills all over them. I
Guess those bumpy teeth help you
grind stuff up.
Mm-hmm. You're right, sid.
Great teeth observation.
Thank you.
Our teeth work so hard to
chew our food.
Yeah, yeah, that's why you
have to brush them every day.
Don't worry, teeth, I'll take
good care of you.
Well, I'm very impressed with
all my teeth experts. You know
So much about different teeth
and what their jobs are. I think
It's time to play with all your
new ideas.
Woo-hoo!
Ok!
Come on, let's play!
It's time for...
Good afternoon!
Ha ha!
Hey, mae, what sound does a
tooth make when it sneezes?
I don't know.
I--i--chew!
Ha ha!
Hey, gerald?
Yeah?
How does your mouth count?
Uh, I don't know. How?
, Tooth, , .
Ha ha!
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Ha ha!
No, really, who's there? Huh.
Oh, well.
Knock, knock.
Um, who's there?
Ha ha!
Ah, this is really strange.
Knock, knock.
Hey, who's there?
Ah!
Ah! Hey, what are you
doing here?
I just wanted to say hello.
Hello. That's it.
Ha ha!
Now, that's funny.
And nice.
[Canned laughter]
ok, let's play pretend. I'm
The mommy. And sid is the daddy.
Aha!
And today we're taking our
big kid daughter, mae, to the
Dentist for a checkup.
Ha ha! Ok, daughter, time to
go to dr. Gerald, friendly
Dentist.
Yeah, 'cause I'm, like, a big
kid, so, like, yeah, I'm a cool
Big kid. Yeah.
Off we go to the dentist.
* Doo dee doo dee doo
ooh, here we are. Ahem.
Hello, sir.
[Clearing throat]
oh, hello there. I'm your
Dentist. And welcome to your
checkup. Have a seat here,
Please, in the chair.
Ok. Thank you.
Ok. I'm just going to take a
look, and yes, yes,
Everything looks good to me. No
cavities.
But, doctor, that is our
daughter's elbow, not her teeth.
Oh, right. Of course. Well,
let me just try--here we go.
Yes, sir. Ah, hmm. Little on the
stinky side. But stinky teeth
Are ok, too. It all checks out.
Wait a minute. Those aren't
her teeth. Those are her feet.
Eh, oh, right. Of course,
yes, yes.
Ah, here we are. I can see now
you have perfect teeth. Yes,
Yes, these are the best teeth I
have ever seen.
Doctor, those are not my
teeth. That's my hair.
These are my teeth.
Oh, wow, nice teeth. Uh,
let's see. , , . Yep, looks
Like she has them all.
I don't have all my teeth.
See? I'm missing one
right here.
Oh.
What kind of dentist are you?
Well, I'm the kind of dentist
who doesn't know anything about
Teeth. Ha ha! Ok, who's next?
Not me!
Hey, hey, wait. Come back!
Come back. I went to dental
school and everything.
And now...
It's time...
For susie!
To sing!
Go, susie!
Oh, you! You know, all this
talk about teeth reminds me of a
Friend of mine named ruth, and
she never brushed her teeth.
No way.
Oh, yeah.
* Ruth was in a rush
and she forgot to brush
Her story is sad but true
it's a story that could happen
To you
did you hear what happened
To the tooth
the tooth that belonged to ruth
It started out at the soda shop
sitting in a booth *
* Did this really happen?
* I'm telling you the truth
The truth of what happened
to her tooth *
What happened?
Well, she ate candy.
Yeah.
She drank soda.
Yeah.
* And she forgot
to brush her teeth *
Oh, no, she didn't!
* She didn't floss
she didn't brush
Because she was in a rush
oh, my, you got to be kidding *
If she didn't brush and floss
like everybody should, that can
Only lead to thing, and it
isn't good.
* Floss, floss
floss, floss *
* Did you hear what happened
to ruth? *
* Ruth
* she got a little hole
In her tooth
the food she didn't brush away
Helped bacteria to grow
the bacteria made a cavity
In her tooth *
* oh, no
* Did you hear what happened
to ruth
Now she brushes every day
and flosses every tooth *
* Uh-huh
* she does it every day
For a good long while
and shows the world her
Beautiful smile *
I'm gonna brush and brush.
I don't ever want a cavity like
ruth got.
Yeah. Don't worry, teeth. I'm
gonna protect you from cavities.
Yeah.
Me, too.
Hey, gabriella, we can brush our
teeth on our play date.
Oh, good idea.
Oh, I'm so glad you all want
to take care of your teeth.
And I think the surprise I have
will really help.
Ooh...
New toothbrushes!
My dentist gave them to me
for each of you!
Oh!
Thank you!
You're welcome. Come on,
we'll put them in your bag. It's
Time to go home.
Yay!
Let's go!
Oh, there's my sid!
There's my grandma!
Oh...and there's gabriella.
Hi.
Hello. Here we go, kids.
Ha ha! Woo! Yeah!
Uh-huh, yeah.
Woo-hoo, woo-hoo.
Uh-huh.
* Backseat driving
with grandma *
Ok, you two, what cool things
did you learn today?
Grandma, did you know that we
have different kinds of teeth
That do different jobs?
And everyone has to brush
and take care of their teeth.
Yeah.
Oh, I always brush my teeth
because I remember my grandma's
Teeth. Yes, my grandma always
had perfect teeth. Straight and
White and clean! Wow! They sure
looked perfect! But one night I
Stayed over at her house and saw
her cleaning her teeth
In a glass.
Oh.
Yes! She took her teeth out
and put them in a glass of
Cleaning liquid.
Ew!
Yuck!
Yes, her teeth were fake ones
that the dentist made for her
Because she didn't brush her
real teeth when she was younger.
They all decayed and fell out.
Ew, they fell out?
Yes!
Oh, yeah, I'm gonna brush
and times a day.
Yeah, times.
Oh, now, don't you worry. You
have healthy teeth and good
Toothpaste and parents who
make you brush.
Yeah! My grandma knows all
sorts of important stuff.
* We learned something cool
something cool today
We know it upside down
and inside out
We learned all about *
woo-hoo!
* Teeth
* teeth expert scientists
In the house *
ha ha!
Back!
Ha ha!
Ah. This celery's really good.
Mmm...crunchy.
Da da da!
Uh-oh. I got something stuck
in my mouth, right in the back,
In my teeth.
Me, too.
Uh-oh. Sounds like the
perfect time to brush
Your teeth.
Oh, that's a good idea,
grandma. We can use our new
Toothbrushes. Ha ha!
To the bathroom!
Here we go.
Yay!
And don't forget to put on
some toothpaste.
Ok.
Not too much!
All right.
Ok.
Ehh...
Ha ha!
So how are you two
doing in there?
Ha ha! It's fun
to brush teeth!
Especially when you're
with a friend.
Yeah, ha ha!
Oh, oh, I got to spit.
Oh, me, too.
[Spitting]
ha ha!
* Brush, brush
brush your teeth
Brush them all day long
brush and brush
And brush and brush
while you sing this song *
* Brush, brush your teeth
but not with a boot *
What?
* Brush your teeth every day
hey, you two are cute *
Ha ha!
We sure are.
Oh, give grandma hugs.
Oh, yeah.
Oh...
Wow, what a great day I had,
you guys. We looked at our teeth
With little mirrors, and we
learned that we have different
Kinds of teeth. They do lots of
different jobs. And you know,
Learning all this made me think
about all teeth, not just teeth
For people, but animal teeth,
too, like the ones you guys
Have. Hmm...
Ok, I've got it. Here's my
super-duper-ooper-schmooper
Big idea. I'm going to invent
the pop-in, pop-out teeth
Changer. It's a bunch of
different kinds of animal teeth
You can pop in and pop out of
your own mouth. Then you can
Know what it feels like to be
that animal and chew like an
Animal. You can try on teeny
chipmunk teeth...and huge
Crocodile teeth.
And dog teeth.
[Woof]
cat teeth.
[Meow]
and beaver teeth.
And even great white shark
teeth.
Chomp!
Maybe you can have lion teeth
and long, funny walrus teeth.
And huge super-duper gigantic
dinosaur teeth. Hello, I am a
Dinosaur with big teeth.
And that's my
super-duper-ooper-schmooper
Big idea.
[Applause]
thank you. Hey, remember to
Brush your teeth, all your
different kinds of teeth, so
They'll be healthy so you can
use them to chew. I am sid the
Science kid.
["Science kid" echoes]
and remember, keeps asking lots
And lots of questions. Ha. See
you later, scientists. I got to
Go brush my teeth! Ha ha!
Wow! Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our website. You can explore
It with us.
Yeah, great idea. Come join
us at pbskids.org. There's a lot
Of great information for
grownups, too.
I think we look pretty good
on the computer.
Yeah.
Investigate, explore,
discover!
Wow!
Hey, I know how to
investigate, explore, and
Discover. And I bet you do,
too. Investigate--that's when
You want to find stuff out.
Explore--that's when you look
at things in the world around
You.
Discover--that's when you
investigate and explore, and
You find out something new.
Be sure to check out another
episode full of amazing science.
My friends and I will
learn how to use science tools,
Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and explore
How to keep our bodies healthy.
See you next time on "sid the
