When the rubber on the shoe rubs

Against the carpet, it creates

Friction, which stops the shoe

From sliding.

Then you'’ll try sliding it

Down the floor out in the

Hallway there.

All right!

Ok!

Hey, you'’re a scientist. You

Can try this, too.

It'’s time for the friction

Investigation. You'’re going to

Slide a hockey puck over a piece

Of carpet, then over a rubber

Mat, then over a smooth floor.

Ok, try sliding the puck as hard

As you can over the carpet, then

The rubber mat, then the floor.

We'’ll use tape to mark where

Your puck stopped. And now

Someone else can take a turn.

It looks like the puck doesn'’t

Slide very far over the carpet

Or the rubber mat, but it does

Slide far over the floor.

Let'’s try this again. First,

Slide the puck over the carpet,

Then the mat, and now the floor.

Wow! Just like the first two

Times, the puck slides really

Far on the smooth floor. Ok,

Last person. Slide the puck as

Hard as you can over the carpet,

Now the rubber mat, and now the

Smooth floor. Let'’s discover why

The puck slides the farthest

Over the floor. The floor is

Really smooth so it doesn'’t

Create much friction with the

Puck. Now feel the rubber mat.

It'’s rough, and so is the

Carpet. They create lots of

Friction with the puck so it

Doesn'’t slide very far. But the

Puck does slide far over the

Smooth floor. Draw some

Observations in your journals.

Remember how the carpet and the

Rubber mat created lots of

Friction with the hockey puck,

And the smooth floor created the

Least amount of friction.

All right, scientists, I can'’t

Wait to see what kinds of

Pictures you drew. Gabriela,

May we see your journal?

Sure. Here'’s the hockey puck

On top of the rubber mat. It

Only slid a teeny-tiny bit. And

It didn'’t slide much on the

Carpet either. But when I slid

It down the hall, it kept going

Really fast, like this. Whoosh!

Mm-hmm. Ha ha!

Ooh, ooh, hey! I know why it

Did that. See, it'’s because the

Hockey puck didn'’t create a lot

Of friction on the floor.
