My dad is going to build me a

That big stump.

Huh? Ooh. A stump? Oh, yeah.

I remember. There used to be a

Tree here, but it fell over and

All that'’s left is this yucky

Old stump.

Big enough to get that stump out

Well, sid, animals can make

Their homes just about anywhere,

Even in a backyard.

Rid of the stump if it'’s a home

For little creatures, but I

Really, really do want a

Basketball court. Ha! No, no.

We should save the stump. But a

Basketball court would be so

Stump until I get home?

Today we'’re talking about

Animals that live in our

Backyard, and today'’s special

Guest is gabriela!

Yay!

Hello. Ha ha!

Gabriela has seen animals

Living in a backyard at her

Grandpa'’s house.

That'’s right. In my grandpa's

Backyard, he has a little pond

With lots of lily pads.

Oh, I love lily pads.

Me, too. One day, I asked if

I could pick some of the lily

Pads.

Ooh, that'’s a great idea!

That'’s what I thought, too,

But my grandpa told me that if

I took out too many lily pads,

The water would get dirty

Because lily pads help keep the

Pond clean.

Hmm, but is a little dirty

Water so bad?

That'’s what I asked, too, and

My grandpa explained that if the

Water got dirty, then the fish

And the frogs wouldn'’t be able

To live in the pond.

That'’s not good, but do you

Really need fish and frogs in

The pond?

That'’s what I asked, too, and

My grandpa said that without

Fish and frogs to eat the

Mosquitoes, we'’d have lots

Of mosquitoes because they

Really like water.

Whoa! Ooh! Mosquitoes? Ouch!

Yeah, they bite you and then

You itch.

Now that'’s bad.

I agree, so I didn'’t pick

The lily pads.

Hmm. Taking up a lily pad can

Make the whole pond yucky.

Yeah, and that means the

Little frogs and fish won'’t have

A home.

Ohh...

Class, we'’re going on a

Field trip to a science center!

Yay!

So, what would my scientists

Like to explore at the science

Center?

We want to explore where

Animals live.

Yeah.

Lots of animals live in my

Grandpa'’s pond.

Yeah, and this morning, my

Dad was going to get rid of a

Stump in our yard, but I found

A spider and roly polies living

On the stump.

How exciting. It sounds like

That stump'’s part of your

Backyard habitat.

Uh, habi-who?

Habitat. It'’s sort of like

An animal neighborhood, where

Different animals live, find

Food, and make their homes.

Oh.

So my backyard, where I run

Around and play soccer, is a

Habitat?

It sure is. You know, the

Science center'’s a great place

To explore and learn about

Habitats, so everybody line up

And get on the bus.

Yay!

Come on.

This is my favorite room in

The whole science center.

Exploration room, and it'’s a

Great place to explore habitats.

Go ahead, take a look around.

Ok.

It'’s gigantic!

Oh, come on. I see something

Oh, it'’s all underwater.

Cool!

Neat.

This is a kelp forest

Habitat.

Wow! Hey, look! There'’s a

Big fish and plants and stuff

In a kelp forest habitat!

Look at me. I'’m a fish in

The kelp forest.

Ha ha ha!

Me, too!

And I'’m one of those long,

Green plants swaying in the

Ocean.

Ha ha! Hello, plant.

Swoosh, swoosh.

Ooh, hey, there'’s another

Picture over there. Come on.

There'’s no water there

At all.

Hey, more buttons!

This is a desert habitat.

Wow.

Oh! Hey, a tortoise! I am a

Tortoise, moving slowly through

The desert habitat.

Those plants with those spiky

Things on it.

Ooh, a cactus.

[Giggles]

Backyard.

Desert habitat.

Oh, nice job investigating,

Scientists.

Yeah, it might not look like

Much, but worms, ants, and

Beetles can live under the

Stump, a squirrel can drink

Rain water that collects in the

Cracks, and spiders can build

Webs on top to make their homes.

Oh. So many little creatures

Need that stump.

Mm-hmm, and what might

Happen if we remove that stump?

Oh! Oh, no! Don'’t--don't do

That because squirrels need it

To drink from. And little

Spiders need to make their homes

On it. And what about all the

Worms and...beetles that live

Under the stump?

Don'’t worry, gerald. Nobody's

Going to remove this stump, but

You did make an interesting

Discovery.

Yes. Everything in a habitat

Is connected.

Oh, yeah! I did make a

Some habitats. First stop is the

Desert. Can you find any animals

Living in this habitat?

Good job. That'’s a tortoise.

They dig holes in the sand to

Stay out of the hot desert sun.

This fallen cactus creates a

Home for small animals, just

Like the stump in sid'’s

Backyard. This special computer

Has a camera that shows warm

Things in red and colder things

In blue. Try moving the camera.

What can you find? Hey, you

Found a lizard sitting on a

Rock! Let'’s visit another

Habitat. This is a kelp forest.

It'’s a home for lots of animals,

Like this shark. It'’s called

A forest because the kelp plants

Grow really tall, just like

Trees. To make the kelp forest

Here at the science center, this

Big machine was built to create

Waves, just like in a real

Ocean. And, just like in the

Ocean, this kelp forest provides

Food and shelter for lots of

Different animals. Look,

A garibaldi. It looks like a big

Goldfish. And that looks like

A snake, but it'’s actually

A fish called a moray eel.

What other animals can you find?

Good job! You found a red sea

Star. Let'’s observe sea stars

Put your hand in the water and

Gently touch the sea star. Can

You feel how the texture of some

Sea stars are smooth and some

Are rough? It'’s so much fun to

Explore habitats at the science

Center.

The kelp forest was my

Favorite habitat.

Habitat. Snakes are cool!

Yeah.

Yeah. Well, my favorite

Habitat is my backyard because

It has a lump.

Oh, I mean a stump.

Hey, lump rhymes with stump.

Bump rhymes with stump.

Oh! And yump rhymes with

Ha ha! What'’s a yump?

Well, I don'’t know, but it

Rhymes with stump. Ha ha!

Ok. I have a new poem.

It'’s a backyard stump,

Not a lump or a bump

Or a yump. Ha ha ha!

And a stump is part of a

Habitat. How '’bout that?

Rat-a-tat-tat!

I splatty-splat-splat!

Ha ha ha!

Hey, giggling scientists, if

You'’ve finished your lunch, we

Have time to explore the science

Center some more.

Well, then clean up the table

[Smacks lips]

I'’m a squirrel.

Ha ha!

And I'’m eating acorns. Yummy!

[Makes munching noises]

Ah! Oh. Now I'’m thirsty.

Uh-oh.

Hey, look! There'’s rain water

Inside the hole in this stump.

Yeah, take a drink.

Ah! Now that'’s good water! I

Sure am glad this stump is here.

Yeah.

[Hums a tune]

Wow, what a beautiful forest.

Build my home.

I'’m going to go get my

Bulldozer and rip up all these

Trees.

What?

And then I'’ll get rid of

That stump.

Here I come in my bulldozer.

[Imitates engine rumbling]

Stop, mr. Person trying to

Get rid of our stump.

Oh, no you don'’t!

This stump is our home.

And it'’s part of our habitat.

Here we come! Boogity

We'’re going to get you.

Bulldozer.

That a habitat is a place where

Animals live and grow.

And eat and build their

Homes.

Habitat is connected.

As future scientists, you two

Have to do your part to protect

Our habitat because that'’s what

Scientists do. You know, one of

My heroes is the scientist

Rachel carson. She was concerned

That habitats were being harmed

By pollution.

Pollution?

Yes. Pollution is stuff like

Trash and yucky chemicals, and

Animals can'’t live where there's

Too much pollution. Now, good

Old rachel carson was worried

That if our habitats were

Destroyed, then we might wake up

One day to this sound.

I don'’t hear anything.

It'’s silence.

Silence is right. That'’s the

Sound of a habitat without

Animals and chirping birds. You

See, if we ruin our habitats,

Then all the animals and birds

Won'’t have any place to live.

Oh! And that'’s not good.

Wow. I want to be a scientist

Like rachel carson.

Yeah, and I want to save

Habitats like the one in my

Backyard.

Yeah.

Sitting on this nice stump.

I sure am hungry. I think I'’ll

Eat some of this yummy stump.

Munch, munch, munch.

Mmm. This stuff is delicious.

Hey, may, let'’s see what else

We can find.

Ok. Oh, I see ants.

Ooh, where? Oh. Neat.

And I found something else.

Huh, what?

A stumposaurus!

Yes, we are, because this

Stump is an important part of

Our backyard habitat.

Yeah. At the science center,

We learned that everything in

The habitat is connected.

Wow. Sounds like you guys

Learned a lot.

Been thinking about this stump.

Save the stump.

I think saving the stump is

The tiny little creatures on it.

Oh, how interesting. So what

Well, right over there is

A spider on a web.

Oh, I see. You know, the

Spider made his home here

Because the stump provides

Protection.

Yeah.

And the spider is probably

Waiting to catch bugs on its

Web to eat.

Wow!

I had a great day. I'’m glad we

Saved the stump because it'’s an

Important part of the backyard

Habitat. And since little

Creatures on the stump couldn'’t

Speak for themselves, I'’m glad

That I could. Heh! Hey, now that

Gives me an idea. Hmm, ok.

I'’ve got it. Here's my

Super-duper-uper-schmooper big

Idea. I'’m going to give animals

All over the world a little

Button they can push, and when

They do, it will light up the

Sid signal. It'’s a big picture

Of my face in the sky, and when

I see my face, I'’ll know I have

To save a habitat. Let'’s say

Somebody is hiking on a trail

And tosses his juice box onto

Some flowers, and now bees

Can'’t get to the flowers. But

Don'’t worry. When the bees send

Out the sid signal, I'’ll come

Racing over to put that juice

Box into the trash.

"Thanks, sid."

Or, if someone is dumping

Something yucky into a pond,

All the frogs can send out the

Sid signal, and I'’ll be on my

Way to clean the pond.

"Ribbit. Hooray for sid!"

The sid signal will help save

Habitats all over the world!

Yay! And that'’s my

Super-duper-uper-schmooper

Big idea!

[Click, canned applause]

Yay! Well, I don'’t have a

Basketball court in my

Backyard, but I do have a stump,

And I love it! Ha ha ha! Ah!

I am sid, the protector of
