1. FIELD
(ASTRID crawls through bushes and briars toward a faint, distressed voice.)
SWANN: Help . . . ! Somebody help me . . . .
(ASTRID gasps in horror and pity to see SWANN on the ground. She takes his shoulders and helps him sit up as he breathes heavily. She looks at her hand now wet with blood and gasps in horror.)
ASTRID: (angrily) Who did this to you?
SWANN: (breathing heavily) A man named . . . Sssalamander.
(ASTRID looks up, her face full of horror.)
ASTRID: (whispers) Salamander?
(SWANN nods weakly and points toward a dark opening partially obscured by overhanging flora.)
SWANN: He did it . . . down there . . . .
ASTRID: (disbelief) Down there?
2. INTERROGATION ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(JAMIE and VICTORIA are talking over each other.)
JAMIE: What other explanation is there?
VICTORIA: But that’s exactly what we’re saying!
BRUCE: Now wait a moment! Are you seriously trying to tell me without a shred of evidence that Salamander is attacking the world with natural disasters?
JAMIE: Well he must be.
VICTORIA: Yes!
DOCTOR: That’s what I believe!
BRUCE: But it’s beyond belief! How could he possibly!
DOCTOR: I’m sure we'll find proof in the Records Room.
BRUCE: Maybe. But that’s where Salamander is.
DOCTOR: Ahh. Well we shall have to wait until he comes out, won’t we? Hmm?
(The DOCTOR suddenly turns to see BENIK standing with a clipboard under his arm, completely, utterly, unamused.)
3. TUNNEL
(ASTRID has taken SWANN just inside the tunnel. He mumbles weakly.)
SWANN: Water . . . .
ASTRID: What?
SWANN: Water . . . !
ASTRID: (whispers) Yes.
(She looks down the tunnel.)
SWANN: No no . . . Salamander’s place . . . Danger . . . .
ASTRID: All right. I’ll be careful. I’ll get you some water.
(She leaves his side as he gasps in pain. She goes cautiously down the tunnel and inspects a rock that looks as if it could hide a secret entrance. She turns and notices a crevice in the wall that looks wet. She pats it with her fingertips, then rubs her fingers with her thumb. She licks the water off her fingers.)
4. INTERROGATION ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Really Benik, I’m beginning to wondering why I pay you such a monstrously high salary. Worrying me over trifles. Make your own decision! Is that all?
BENIK: You have to sign these passes for the hovertruck food supply.
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) What, now?
BENIK: Well you always told me they had priority over everything.
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Oh very well.
(He takes the file and walks to the desk. VICTORIA, JAMIE, and BRUCE watch him. The DOCTOR sits with the clipboard and picks up a pen. He glances up at BENIK, trying to avoid having to write a signature.)
BENIK: By the way . . . .
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Yes?
BENIK: The door to the Record Room. It’s jammed. It was all right when you came out, wasn’t it?
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Oh, yes.
BENIK: Well it won’t open now. Can I have your key?
(The DOCTOR reaches into his jacket, then chuckles deeply.)
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) I’m going mad. I left it in there, what a fool. (Laughs.)
BENIK: It’s all right, I’ll use the emergency key.
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Yes, do that will you? Right away. Oh please don't wait for these.
(BENIK leaves as the DOCTOR bends over the papers. He looks up, watching BENIK until he closes the door. The DOCTOR leans back, blowing his breath out in relief.)
DOCTOR: (as himself) That was close.
BRUCE: How long was he standing there listening to us?
DOCTOR: I don’t know.
JAMIE: D’you think he’s on to us?
DOCTOR: (Studying the papers.) I . . . I hope not. But he’s done us a good turn in bringing me these. (Glances at BRUCE.) This’ll interest you, Bruce.
BRUCE: Mm-hm?
DOCTOR: How many people you say work in the research centre?
BRUCE: Fewer than you’d think. It’s fully automated, you know. (Thinking.) Six engineers, and six guards on duty at any one time.
(The DOCTOR listens with a crooked mouth.)
DOCTOR: A dozen, eh? Will you tell me why thirty people are catered for here?
(He taps the papers for emphasis.)
5. TUNNEL
(ASTRID returns with a damp cloth and dabs SWANN’s face.)
SWANN: (Breathing heavily.) The w*r . . . h-how bad was the w*r?
ASTRID: w*r? I didn’t understand you.
(SWANN groans in pain and turns away. Blood trickles down his neck around his ear.)
ASTRID: I wish there was something I could do for you.
SWANN: (distressed) What’s he done? What’s he done? He’s kept us prisoners. Listen. (Grips ASTRID’s hand.) There are others . . . there are more people down the shaft . . . .
ASTRID: (whispers) Others?
SWANN: Salamander’s kept us down there, prisoners, years of it. Promise you’ll bring them to the surface. Swear it . . . . You've got to swear it . . . !
(He gasps, breathing rapidly, his face contorted in pain. His head drops with a sigh. ASTRID looks up from his lifeless body.)
ASTRID: Yes . . . . (convicted) I swear it!
6. INTERROGATION ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(The DOCTOR is on the phone.)
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) This is Salamander. I want a security escort to come to the interrogation room immediately. I’m releasing two prisoners. They are to be conducted to the main gates and set free. Is that understood? Good.
(He puts the phone down and clasps his hands, turning to JAMIE and VICTORIA.)
DOCTOR: (as himself) Well I hope that works.
JAMIE: So do I.
VICTORIA: What do you want us to do when we get outside?
BRUCE: There are plenty of public phones in the area. Dial double zero one and ask for a man named Forrester.
JAMIE: Eh?
BRUCE: He’s my deputy to this area.
VICTORIA: Double zero one Forrester.
BRUCE: Tell him where I am and just say "redhead".
VICTORIA: Redhead.
BRUCE: Redhead. Is that clear?
JAMIE: Redhead? Is that your wife?
BRUCE: It’s our emergency call.
(The intercom buzzes.)
JAMIE: Sorry.
(The DOCTOR picks up the phone.)
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Salamander.
(He listens and shoots a concerned glance toward his companions.)
DOCTOR: (as SALAMANDER) Is the er- is the pass in order . . . ? Very well, you have my authority. (Puts down the phone.)
JAMIE: What’s all that about?
DOCTOR: (as himself) We have a visitor. (Touches his lip in thought.) Now Bruce, you’re going to get your proof, but I want you to do one thing. (Rubs hands.)
BRUCE: What?
DOCTOR: (Pointing.) I want you to take my two friends to the gates and see they get away all right.
BRUCE: What are you going to do?
DOCTOR: (to JAMIE and VICTORIA) You are to go straight to the t*rd as soon as you can.
JAMIE: Now wait a minute Doc-
BRUCE: (interrupting) What is this "t*rd?"
VICTORIA: Well it’s a sort of space-
JAMIE: (Nudges her.) Shh!
VICTORIA: House. House we live in.
(BRUCE knows something is up, but lets it go.)
BRUCE: (to the DOCTOR) I don’t think you heard me the first time. What are you going to do?
7. WORK ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(Everyone is gathered around a large pot of food. MARY takes a bowl to COLIN and sits across from him, but he shakes his head.)
MARY: Please eat some of it Colin.
COLIN: I will, later.
(The buzzer sounds. MARY and COLIN stand. MARY looks hopeful, but COLIN looks grim.)
MARY: They’re coming back!
COLIN: Right. This time I’m gonna have it out with Salamander.
8. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(The door opens and ASTRID emerges. She turns to watch the door as it closes. She looks around the room and approaches an open file on the desk. She flips through it. She goes to the door to the work room and pulls on the handle, but it is locked. She approaches the large Communicator. She flips a switch and looks around to see if it did anything. She chooses another switch and pauses for something to happen. She flips a third switch and the door unlocks with a whir. The workers open the door from the other side, crowding to see SWANN’s return. They are silent with shock to see the first stranger they’ve seen in five years. They back away and disperse, muttering nervously.)
9. WORK ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(ASTRID steps into the work room and looks around at all the machines, buzzing and whirring softly. None of the workers are to be seen.)
ASTRID: Where are you?
MAN [OC]: Keep away. Get back!
(ASTRID takes another step into the room.)
ASTRID: I’ve come to help you.
(Suddenly the workers break out with mops, brooms, and anything else they can use as a weapon. ASTRID shouts as they attack her. COLIN and MARY struggle against the men holding them.)
COLIN: Let me go!
MARY: (to COLIN) The radiation!
COLIN: It’s a girl, a human being!
MARY: But the radiation!
(COLIN breaks free and pushes toward ASTRID.)
ASTRID: Please, don’t! Please!
(COLIN pushes to the front and stands in front of ASTRID, facing the crowd.)
COLIN: What’s the matter with you, are you all mad!? Get back! Get back!
(His outburst calms everyone down. They back away. ASTRID sighs with relief as she stands.)
ASTRID: Thanks!
(COLIN backs away.)
COLIN: First, don’t move. I don’t know who you are, but you must be carrying radiation.
ASTRID: What?
COLIN: You’re from the surface, aren’t you?
ASTRID: Radiation?
MARY: How’d you get down here?
COLIN: Did you see Salamander? And Swann? What about Swann?
ASTRID: Swann sent me.
(A mutter of excitement washes through the crowd.)
MARY: Swann? Where is he?
ASTRID: He’s dead!
(There are cries of disbelief and ASTRID is still upset by the experience.)
MARY: You see, Colin, Salamander was right! He always said if we went up to the surface we’d die of radiation.
ASTRID: (Shaking her head.) No, not radiation. Salamander k*lled him.
CROWD: No. No. I don't believe her. She’s lying.
ASTRID: He lied to you! He’s been keeping you prisoners, I don’t know why!
(The crowd speaks out in disagreement.)
MARY: That’s impossible!
ASTRID: Now listen to me!
COLIN: (Shouting over the crowd.) Now wait!
(The room quiets.)
COLIN: We must decontaminate you. There’s equipment in Salamander’s control room. In there.
CROWD: Yes. Yes. In there. Yes.
ASTRID: (annoyed) All right.
(She walks back into the Control Room.)
10. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(COLIN and MARY follow her at a safe distance.)
COLIN: (Points.) In there.
(ASTRID walks into the cubby. The geiger counter clicks as the needle on the radiation meter jumps to the highest reading.)
COLIN: See. Radiation.
(The needle slowly spins back down as the clicking dies out.)
COLIN: You can come out now.
ASTRID: (annoyed) I’m all right?
COLIN: Yes. Now, tell us. What’s this about Swann?
ASTRID: (Waves her finger.) No. Just watch. (Grabs a ruler off the desk.) Look at the meter.
(She lowers the ruler just inside the cubby. The needle clicks and spins all the way up. COLIN and MARY watch in shock as the needle runs back down.)
ASTRID: The machine’s a fake. Is this ruler contaminated?
(COLIN approaches, shocked.)
ASTRID: (Points with the ruler.) Look. See those valves? There’s an invisible ray. Break it, and it works the meter. (Holds the ruler toward COLIN.)
COLIN: But Salamander-
MARY: He built it! He always uses it when he comes down.
ASTRID: (Approaches MARY.) Yes I know, to try and convince you for some reason or other that there’s radiation above ground.
MARY: There is. The w*r!
ASTRID: (Chuckling in frustration.) w*r? What w*r?
COLIN: (quietly furious) Where is he? Where’s Salamander?
ASTRID: (angrily) That’s just what I would like to know.
11. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(SALAMANDER looks at the door to the elevator and approaches the record machine. He flips some switches.)
12. HALLWAY, RESEARCH CENTRE
(JAMIE and VICTORIA walk into a hall, followed by a guard. Another guard and the CAPTAIN watch them.)
CAPTAIN: Wait. Where are you going?
(JAMIE approaches nervously.)
JAMIE: Leader Salamander’s orders.
CAPTAIN: What orders?
JAMIE: He’s released us.
CAPTAIN: I wasn’t informed.
BRUCE: I was.
(BRUCE strides up to the CAPTAIN.)
CAPTAIN: Where are the release papers?
BRUCE: Are you questioning my word?
CAPTAIN: No, of course not, sir, but there are strict rules.
BRUCE: Rules? Really? You forget, I’m world Security Controller. I make rules and break them. And men, Captain. Come on, you two.
(He turns and leads JAMIE and VICTORIA away.)
CAPTAIN: (to guard) Find Deputy Benik. Quickly!
GUARD: Sir!
(The CAPTAIN and the guard walk opposite directions.)
13. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(The workers are all gathered in the Control Room, talking excitedly. ASTRID pushes through the crowd, trying to talk over them.)
ASTRID: But I can only take two at a time!
MARY: I’m sure they all understand that.
COLIN: Don’t you see, I must find Salamander!
MARY: Are you sure you don't want me to wait here with them?
ASTRID: No. Now that Swann’s dead you two seem to be the leaders. After what you’ve told me we must confront the man who started all this, face to face.
14. HALLWAY, RESEARCH CENTRE
(KENT walks down the hall and looks around before approaching the intercom for the Records Room. He switches on the camera to see inside. He presses a button and a buzzing sounds as the door is unlocked. He looks around the corner to see the door. He hears voices behind him and quickly flattens himself against the wall around the corner.)
GUARD: Yes, sir, the door’s jammed and I can’t get a view of the inside of it all.
BENIK: Right. So Bruce and the rest of them are in the interrogation room?
(They stop in front of the intercom.)
GUARD: Yes sir. The Captain felt something was wrong and so do I sir.
(KENT is listening.)
GUARD: One minute Leader Salamander’s locked in the Records room, the next he’s in the interrogation room. It doesn’t make sense, sir.
BENIK: Of course it doesn’t make sense if you haven't got any sense.
(He walks away until he’s standing in front of KENT, but doesn’t turn around.)
BENIK: Just stand guard and try and keep your wits about you.
GUARD: Yes sir.
(BENIK walks away, the guard takes his post by the intercom, and KENT slips away.)
15. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(KENT opens the doors and steps in, closing them behind himself. He walks to the Communicator and flips a switch, sealing the door off.)
SALAMANDER: Giles Kent.
(KENT spins to face SALAMANDER standing with his hands on his hips.)
SALAMANDER: What are you doing here?
KENT: (Smiling.) Oh, I’ve been looking forward to this meeting. You’re getting careless. You didn’t double lock the doors. Oh, it’s all right, I’ve done it now. (Laughs.) The only way anybody can get through there is to blast their way through.
SALAMANDER: How did you get into the Research Centre?
KENT: Oh, you know me. There isn’t a pass in the world I can’t get my hands on if I put my mind to it.
SALAMANDER: (Smiling.) You won’t find it so easy getting out.
KENT: Really? Well we’ll see. I’m not on my own this time. I’ve got friends here with me. And between us we’re going to fix you once and for all.
SALAMANDER: You always were a tiresome man, Kent.
KENT: I’m going to be more than tiresome this time. You know the biggest mistake you ever made was not k*lling me when you had the chance.
SALAMANDER: Oh so you going to k*ll me huh? How petty. What good do you think that will do?
(He takes a step, but KENT whips out a g*n.)
KENT: Hold it! Now don’t move quickly, my nerves are a bit shaky at the moment.
16. HALLWAY, RESEARCH CENTRE
(The live video of KENT with SALAMANDER at gunpoint is on the intercom outside.)
BRUCE: We must get in there somehow.
BENIK: We can’t without the emergency key, and Salamander has it in there.
CAPTAIN: We could burn our way in.
BENIK: Never.
BRUCE: Why not?
BENIK: It’s an X-structure alloy, you’d hardly scratch the surface.
BRUCE: We’ll have to try it. Get the gear up here. Fast!
(The CAPTAIN leaves.)
17. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
KENT: (Laughs.) Never get away with it? Oh, that’s good, coming from you. Don’t you realize you’re dispensable, and the world is going to get along fine without you from now on.
(SALAMANDER just growls quietly.)
KENT: The only good idea you ever had in your life was getting rid of me and you couldn’t even do that properly, could you? (Laughs.) And now I’m back and you’re finished.
(From outside, the sound of machinery can be heard.)
KENT: Oh, what’s that?
SALAMANDER: They’re breaking down the door.
(KENT backs toward the Communicator, keeping the g*n on SALAMANDER, and flips the switch to turn on the camera. BRUCE and BENIK stand behind a guard blasting at the door.)
KENT: They don’t appear to be having much success.
18. OUTSIDE RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(The guard has a blowtorch and goggles.)
GUARD: It’s not cutting, sir.
BRUCE: Never mind, keep at it!
(BENIK produces a g*n, but BRUCE grabs it and forces it out of his hand.)
BRUCE: Ah-ah-ah! I’ll take that.
(BENIK shakes his hand and rubs his wrist.)
GUARD: It’s no good sir.
BRUCE: Keep going!
19. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(The workers crowd around the Communicator screen and point as they watch the elevator ascend.)
20. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
SALAMANDER: You’re trapped, aren't you?
KENT: Oh you’re a fool, Salamander. You don’t think I’d forgotten already, do you?
SALAMANDER: (concerned) What?
KENT: (Laughs.) I’ve been with you too many times in this room in the past, not to know where this leads to.
(He flips the switch on the recording machine, opening the door to the elevator. He walks around SALAMANDER, keeping the g*n on him, and points at the opening door.)
KENT: Your little bolt-hole. Halfway down the tunnel. A passage out to the fields and enough expl*sives down there to stop you or your th*gs following me.
(SALAMANDER backs away as KENT moves toward the elevator shaft. SALAMANDER raises his hands, pointing upward, a gesture and expression very similar to the DOCTOR’s. He taps his fingers, then folds his hands with a smile.)
SALAMANDER: (as the DOCTOR) Well that’s very interesting Mister Kent. Why didn’t you tell me that before?
(KENT stares in disbelief and his confidence wavers. He takes a step closer, trying to call SALAMANDER’s bluff.)
KENT: Oh no, it can’t be!
DOCTOR: Oh-ho, I’m afraid it is. Oh look! Here’s another surprise for you. Look behind you.
(KENT spins to face ASTRID, COLIN, and MARY, just having come from the elevator. ASTRID has a g*n pointed at KENT.)
KENT: Astrid, you’ve come just in time.
ASTRID: It’s too late, Giles, I know everything.
COLIN: That’s him, that’s the man who took us down there in the first place.
MARY: Giles Kent, we thought you were dead.
KENT: Now look, I’ve never seen these people before in my life.
ASTRID: They told me everything. You and Salamander were in it together.
21. SECRET ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(SALAMANDER is at an intercom in the underground tunnels, watching the happenings inside the Records Room.)
ASTRID: You built an atomic shelter, took some people down for an endurance test. The next person they saw was Salamander,
22. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
ASTRID: Who told them that an atomic w*r had started.
DOCTOR: You see, Kent-
(KENT leaps at the DOCTOR with a roar. He grabs the DOCTOR’s arm as he tries to get away and wraps his arm around the DOCTOR’s neck, holding a g*n to his head.)
ASTRID: Oh, be careful, Doctor! He’ll k*ll you!
MARY: You kept us down there like animals!
COLIN: Why? Why did you do it to us?
KENT: We had to have someone create the natural disasters, didn't we, and we fooled you all!
DOCTOR: You didn’t fool me, Kent.
KENT: You didn’t suspect me.
DOCTOR: Any man who resorts to m*rder as eagerly and as rapidly as you must be suspect. You didn’t just want to expose Salamander . . . you wanted to k*ll him and take his place!
KENT: And I will! You think you’re gonna stop me? Or these people?
(He waves his g*n violently as he moves with the DOCTOR toward the elevator.)
KENT: Now move out of the way, quick! We’ll see who’ll stop me!
(ASTRID, MARY, and COLIN quickly step away from the elevator as KENT moves toward it, holding the g*n to the DOCTOR’s head. KENT throws the DOCTOR and ASTRID catches him, both shouting. The DOCTOR quickly runs back toward KENT as the door closes.)
DOCTOR: Stop him! Stop him!
(He runs into the door as it closes and runs back past ASTRID toward the Communicator.)
DOCTOR: Ah! He’s going to try and blow the place up!
(He flips switches on the Communicator.)
ASTRID: (to COLIN and MARY) Come on then!
(She runs for the Records Room door.)
DOCTOR: No! Don’t touch that door, it’s red hot!
ASTRID: What do you mean?
DOCTOR: (Waving his arms.) Well it’s locked. They’re trying to burn through from the other side.
(He resumes messing with the Communicator.)
MARY: (Points.) Look!
(A tunnel is visible on the screen.)
DOCTOR: It looks like a sort of cave.
ASTRID: It’s the escape route.
(On the screen, SALAMANDER climbs out of the secret entrance in the tunnels.)
ASTRID: Salamander!
DOCTOR: Yes. I wonder if he knows Kent’s on his way?
23. OUTSIDE RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(The guard is still blasting the door with a blowtorch. BRUCE holds his hand to his forehead.)
GUARD: Still no good, sir.
BRUCE: Come on, man! Can’t you increase the power?
(BENIK suddenly lunges for something.)
GUARD: No sir.
(BENIK stands with a guard’s g*n and backs away.)
BENIK: Get back!
(He turns and nearly runs into a group of guards and their captain.)
BRUCE: About time, Forrester.
(BENIK drops the g*n and puts his hands up.)
BENIK: Don’t sh**t! Don’t sh**t!
(BRUCE approaches and BENIK slowly lowers his hands.)
BENIK: (nervously) I demand a trial, Bruce. A fair trial.
BRUCE: What a nasty little man you are, to be sure. Forrester, I want all research personnel detained, and you can begin with Benik, here. Take him away.
(Forrester, the captain, leads the way as two guards take BENIK’s arms and drag him away.)
DOCTOR: (Over intercom.) Bruce? Bruce, can you hear me out there? Bruce?
(BRUCE runs down the hall.)
24. HALLWAY, RESEARCH CENTRE
(BRUCE runs to the intercom and presses the button to view the screen.)
DOCTOR: Can you hear me?
BRUCE: Yes, Doctor.
DOCTOR: (Breathing heavily.) Hah. Oh, there you are. (Clears throat.) I think Kent is going to try to blow us up. Any chance of getting us out of here? Things are going to turn rather nasty in a minute.
BRUCE: We’re doing our best, Doctor.
DOCTOR: (Breathing heavily.) Oh. Well if you can’t you better leave with your- your men. There’s no point in us all going up in smoke.
25. TUNNEL
(SALAMANDER hides around the corner as KENT comes down the tunnel, stopping to look around. KENT walks past SALAMANDER. SALAMANDER jumps out and wrestles the g*n away from KENT. He steps back, holding the g*n close.)
SALAMANDER: (unimpressed) You always were a fool, weren't you?
KENT: (whispers) Now wait a minute. They’ll be after both of us now.
SALAMANDER: (Shaking his head.) Oh no they won’t.
KENT: I tell you, they know!
SALAMANDER: So what do you want me to do, huh? Bury our differences, hmm? I didn’t need you once, I still don’t need you.
KENT: Now wait a minute. The place is mine, we know that, we planned it for years, together! Between us we can destroy them all, and the evidence! Just you and me, Salamander.
SALAMANDER: You and me? What use are you to me? (Raises the g*n to point upward.) You were useful once, but now . . . . (Levels the g*n.)
KENT: (horrified) No . . . . No!
(SALAMANDER fires. KENT grabs his shoulder and falls against the wall. He stumbles away, using the walls for support, and SALAMANDER laughs deeply. He walks slowly after his wounded prey.)
SALAMANDER: You won’t get away from me, Kent! (Laughs.)
(KENT stumbles through the tunnel, breathing hard. He finds the secret entrance, but it is closed up. He shoves his shoulder against the rock and the door slowly opens.)
26. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(The DOCTOR and ASTRID watch KENT on the screen as he emerges from the secret door. The DOCTOR glances at ASTRID and raises a hand to his mouth.)
27. SECRET ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(KENT falls against the wall next to the intercom in the secret room. He watches as SALAMANDER climbs through the secret door, laughing. He points the g*n at KENT.)
SALAMANDER: I told you you could not escape me.
(He fires again. KENT cries out and holds his stomach. He slides down the wall, panting, and groans.)
KENT: (Breathing heavily.) Well if I’m . . . going to die . . . Salamander . . . you’ll die with me!
(KENT lunges at the intercom and grabs a lever.)
SALAMANDER: (horrified) No! No!
(KENT pulls the lever. The screen flashes white with the sound of an expl*si*n. White smoke fills the screen.)
28. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(A large post falls onto the recording machine, knocking the DOCTOR down with a scream. The girls scream and the guys shout as the room shakes and falls apart. COLIN and MARY hug each other in fear as dust flies everywhere. The door finally opens and a guard runs in, followed by BRUCE, while everyone is still shouting and the room rumbling.)
COLIN: Come on, let’s get out of here.
(BRUCE runs to the DOCTOR as he begins to pick himself up, covered in dust and dirt.)
BRUCE: Come on Doctor, let’s get out of here.
(BRUCE and ASTRID help the DOCTOR as he groans. ASTRID gasps with horror when she sees the cave-in on the scanner.)
ASTRID: Oh, Doctor! Salamander! Giles! They’re dead!
(BRUCE pulls the DOCTOR, who pulls ASTRID, traumatized after seeing KENT’s death.)
BRUCE: Yeah, we’ll be too if we don’t . . . .
DOCTOR: Come on! Come on out of here.
29. OUTSIDE RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(Amidst much gasping and shouting, everyone gets out, BRUCE, ASTRID, and the DOCTOR last. The DOCTOR holds his head, grunting, his hair, torn jacket, and face covered in dirt. ASTRID coughs from the dust.)
ASTRID: The people . . . .
BRUCE: People? What people?
ASTRID: The people underground in the deep shelter.
DOCTOR: They may have been k*lled!
ASTRID: (upset) I promised Swann I’d get them out!
BRUCE: But that’s not your fault. You couldn’t have done more!
DOCTOR: (Pointing.) There’s a TV monitor screen in there. There must be a link to the deep shelter.
(ASTRID runs back into the Records Room and BRUCE follows her, but the DOCTOR stays behind, holding his head.)
30. RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(ASTRID flips a switch and turns knobs on the Communicator. She covers her head with a shout as something falls apart behind her. The screen comes on.)
ASTRID: (Laughing with relief.) It’s all right! They’re alive!
BRUCE: How are you going to get to them?
ASTRID: There’s a tunnel from outside! (Ducks under a flying piece of debris.) We can get to it outside the Research Station.
BRUCE: But that’s probably been destroyed by the expl*si*n.
ASTRID: We’ll get to them somehow!
BRUCE: Look out!
(BRUCE pulls ASTRID away as pieces continue to fall around them.)
31. OUTSIDE RECORDS ROOM, RESEARCH CENTRE
(They run to join the DOCTOR outside the room.)
ASTRID: Get me some men! I’ll lead them!
BRUCE: All right! I’ll go with you!
DOCTOR: (Breathing heavily.) Oh good then. That’s splendid. I’ll come too.
ASTRID: Oh no Doctor, it’s far too dangerous! They might mistake you as Salamander.
DOCTOR: Oh yes.
(He groans and holds his head.)
ASTRID: Are you hurt?
DOCTOR: No I’m all right. I’ll come with you as far as the gates. Come on, we must go!
(BRUCE and ASTRID run off and the DOCTOR follows, holding a hand to his head in pain.)
32. DUNES, NIGHT
(JAMIE opens the t*rd door and looks out. He steps out onto the sand, rubbing his hands. The wind blows and the ocean roars a short walk away. He puts his hands on his hips when he finally sees what he’s looking for. The DOCTOR trudges wearily across the dunes, still disguised as SALAMANDER.)
JAMIE: I thought you were never coming.
(The DOCTOR stops and holds a hand to his head, exhausted.)
JAMIE: Hey Doctor, are you all right?
(JAMIE runs to him and helps him into the t*rd.)
33. t*rd CONSOLE ROOM
(VICTORIA turns to face them and grabs the back of a chair.)
VICTORIA: Oh there you are Doctor.
(JAMIE walks in with the DOCTOR, the t*rd light revealing the extent of his battering. His hair is a mess, his jacket torn and dirty, and his face is scratched up and dirty, his nose bleeding.)
VICTORIA: You do look in a state. Come and sit down.
JAMIE: (Approaches VICTORIA.) I told you it wouldn’t be long. You- you worry too much.
VICTORIA: We shouldn’t have left him.
JAMIE: You see, after the expl*si*n, Doctor, we didnae know what to do.
(The DOCTOR looks over the console.)
JAMIE: You said to come back here, which we did, but I’m sure we were followed.
VICTORIA: Please, can we start straight away?
(The DOCTOR reaches toward some controls, then lifts a hand to his head wearily and waves JAMIE over.)
JAMIE: Me, Doctor?
(JAMIE approaches and grabs a dial. He hesitates and lets go.)
JAMIE: But you said we were never to touch the controls.
DOCTOR: Quite right, Jamie.
(The DOCTOR spins around, his mouth unmoving. The real DOCTOR stands by the doors in his normal clothes, his hair unkempt, his collar awry, and a bandage on his cheek.)
DOCTOR: Welcome to the t*rd.
SALAMANDER: Thank you. You’re doing so well impersonating me, eh . . . I thought I might return the compliment.
DOCTOR: And Giles Kent?
SALAMANDER: Unfortunately, didn’t survive the expl*si*n.
(The DOCTOR speaks with a concerning lack of animation, just like SALAMANDER.)
DOCTOR: We’re going to put you outside, Salamander, no friends, no safety, nothing. You’ll run. But they’ll catch up with you.
(SALAMANDER spins and reaches for the controls. The DOCTOR lunges and grabs him.)
DOCTOR: No!
(SALAMANDER grabs the DOCTOR’s shirt and punches him in the stomach. The DOCTOR groans as SALAMANDER spins and shoves him backwards over the console. SALAMANDER leans over the DOCTOR, their identical faces inches from each other.)
SALAMANDER: And now I’m going to k*ll you.
(JAMIE jumps on SALAMANDER and pulls him away.)
JAMIE: No you don't.
(SALAMANDER elbows JAMIE in the stomach, causing him to fall with a groan. SALAMANDER wrenches a dial and the t*rd starts up with a bang. The DOCTOR tumbles backwards into a chair and catches VICTORIA as she slides toward him, both shouting. The t*rd whines, rising in pitch.)
VICTORIA: Oh, Doctor!
(The DOCTOR holds onto the chair, which must be bolted to the floor, and pulls VICTORIA close as she holds onto him.)
DOCTOR: Victoria! Jamie! Hold onto something!
(JAMIE catches a post, but SALAMANDER has nothing. He slides toward the open doors with a scream.)
DOCTOR: Jamie! Woah!
(SALAMANDER screams as he is sucked out of the t*rd and into the void. As the t*rd’s whine rises to a piercing pitch, he flails, falling aimlessly in the maddening swirl of lights . . . .)
