I never, never in my wildest dreams

thought that years later

we'd be sitting here
celebrating its th anniversary.

The fact that all of you have been
so loyal and so loving to us

is the real reason we have had
such a successful afterlife.

I want to thank all of you
for such a wonderful ride,

so happy, happy th anniversary

to all of you magical, mystical
Hocus Pocus fans out there.

You are the best.
Now, brew up some witches' potion,

and enjoy just a bunch of Hocus Pocus!

Once upon a time years ago

A spell so powerful was weaved

It enters our souls on All Hallows Eve

It's finally here.

I love Halloween so much. [chuckles]

This really was the best deal
I've gotten on the dark web.

Now, what does it say?

"It's Halloween

And to create a fright

You must get to the Bash before midnight

There is only one way to find the address

And that's on a broom with a GPS

-[beeps]
-[GPS] Where do you want to go?

-[beeps]
-There is traffic on your route.

-[beeps]
-Preparing for lift-off.

We are so excited
to be hosting together tonight

-here at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
-So excited.

We have movie clips, we have music,
we have Binx, we have Billy Butcherson.

-Billy!
-Plus, hey.

Plus, we have the world's best
costume runway contest,

which will, I guarantee you,
be out of control.

-You guys ready?
-Oh, yeah.

Everybody say hello
to that party-starter over there,

our DJ for the night, Lady Bunny.

-[audience cheers]
-[whoops]

Now, I'm sure, like all of you,

I have watched Hocus Pocus every
single year since I was a little kid.

Let's face it, Hocus Pocus is our movie.

It's our Rocky Horror Picture Show.
It's our Goonies.

It's our Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.

-It's our--
-Okay, Jordan, I think we got it.

The point is, we know
the whole movie by heart.

So just in case somebody hasn't seen it,

-which would be so very sad for you…
-Very, very sad.

…Jordan and I will give you
the speed version.

-To the entire movie.
-Oh, yeah.

-Starting right…
-Now.

In Salem, Thackery Binx
chases Emily into the woods.

It's really scary. Then he finds the
haggy witches breathing in Emily's youth.

It's m*rder!
Then they turn Thackery into a black cat

and the witches are hanged,
and I ran to my mommy.

-Interesting.
-[audience laughs]

Then it's Halloween, . I was five.

-I was not yet born.
-Well, good for you.

Then Max falls in love with Allison
and the bullies steal his shoes.

Then Max goes trick or treating
with his little sister Dani…

She's a pain but she is so cute.

Then they go to the Sanderson house
and Max lights the black flame candle.

Because he's a virgin.

And the witches come back to Salem.

They do, and Penny and Garry Marshall
are, for some reason, married.

-Which is really weird.
-Yeah, totally.

Then SJP flirts with a creepy bus driver
who runs Binx over, but don't worry,

-he's okay.
-The witches find the kids at the house.

The kids all escape to warn
all of the adults at a party.

Honestly, was anyone in that town
not invited to that party?

Then the witches show up
and they belt out…

[both] ♪ I put a spell on you! ♪

I mean, they bring it
like nobody's business.

And then the kids and Binx and bullies
burn the witches in an oven.

Which is really gross.
Then Max falls asleep with Allison,

-and I wished that I was Max.
-And I wished I was Allison.

And then, while they are sleeping,
the witches steal Dani.

Not cool.

But they trick the witches with
headlights, like it's daylight savings.

The witches think they're dead
but they're not.

-They ride mops and vacuums and whatnot.
-It's pretty incredible.

-Then they all fight at the cemetery.
-Billy loses his head.

-And the sun really does come up.
-Spoiler alert.

The witches turn to dust
and Binx is a boy again.

But he's dead!

But he's happy
'cause he's with his dead sister

-and they un-live happily ever after.
-The end!

[audience cheering]

Dang. Now I really wanna go see the movie
again. I want to see Allison and Dani.

And Max. How about we just watch them?

[audience cheers]

Whoa!

Max Dennison.

Allison.

Oh, Allison, huh?

I thought you weren't into Halloween.

I'm not. I'm just taking
my little sister, Dani, around.

That's nice.

-I always do it.
-My parents made him.

Can you guys believe that it's been
years since we met?

Barely. I was ten. Vinessa was .
And, Omri, you were still a virgin.

-Thanks for the reminder.
-Any time.

years ago the stars aligned
for this Halloween classic,

and I am so proud to be
a part of the cast that made it happen.

[audience cheers]

Gather around.

-One thing more and all is done.
-Yeah?

Add a bit of thine own tongue.

Hocus Pocus is a Disney movie
about three witches

who try to suck the life out of children.

Your basic, good, warm family film.

Take my hands. We will share her.

Oh, Winnie, how generous of thee.

[David Kirschner] It started
as a bedtime story for our daughters.

I brought that to Disney, and I said,

"Halloween is almost
a billion-dollar industry

and yet there are no family films."

The original title was
Disney's Halloween House.

It was much more dark.
It was a scarier movie.

[witches cackling]

On All Hallows' Eve when the moon is round

A virgin will summon us
from under the ground

[Kirschner]
It was spooky comedy, for sure,

but it became much more fun
than I had ever envisioned it.

And that's Kenny.
I mean, he just brought a joy to it.

Oh, come on,
it's just a bunch of hocus-pocus.

Max, no!

The idea to me was thrilling
and I believed in it.

I believed that we could do
a family Halloween story,

and laugh at the good humor,
and that's what we did.

I smell children.

Sic 'em!

I read the script of Hocus Pocus
and I was very intrigued by it

because it was an opportunity
to do things that I really love to do,

which is play physical comedy…

Oh, yes!

…and be more than a little broad.

We're young!

Well, younger.

But it's a start! [cackles]

I guess what I remember most is sort of
how awful we were as characters.

-His punishment shall not be to die…
-No?

…but to live forever.

I was kind of surprised
that the goal was to get a child

and basically…

destroy them.

-[groans]
-[all hissing]

But because it was done
in a really heightened, ridiculous way,

it was a lot of fun.

-[squeals]
-[all cackling]

[chuckles]

[all shouting]

As Billy Butcherson, I was a zombie
before zombies were cool.

[groaning]

When you think zombies, you think like,
"Oh, I want to eat your brains."

No. Billy was like,

[in gruff voice]
"Hey, I brought you a flower."

[normal voice] Basically I was told,

"We want a zombie that's not scary
but one that you can date."

-Hello, Billy.
-[grunts]

Walt Disney used to say,
"You have to have darkness to have light."

The film embraced that.

-It's hot! It's hot!
-[witches screaming]

Even though the inherent core of the
story is something pretty dark…

Dani, wake up.

-Trick or treat!
-[screams]

-Looking for this?
-Or this?

…we always maintained
that little twinkle in the eye

that makes it appealing still to this day.

[laughs] Boy down.

I don't think any of us
who were making it at the time

thought Hocus Pocus
would have such a long life.

People tell me all the time they grew up
watching it and they still watch it

and think it's wonderful.

Stop!

Dude, it was years ago.

For it to be embraced so wholly
and so rabidly,

it's flattering and it's an honor.

First of all, I can't believe
it's been years.

Don't I look fabulous?
And secondly, it's a cult classic.

And none of us expected it.

It means so much to me
because it has touched so many people

in so many wonderful ways.

Hey, Billy.

Thanks.

It found its legs.
It's found its wings. It soars.

[yawns]

[audience cheering]

mind-blowing costumes of all time

right here in our audience.

And we thought the only way
to show them off

-was with a runway contest.
-That's right.

And there is only one man who can run it.

He is no stranger to pageantry.

From RuPaul's Drag Race

and the Miss America competition,
it's Ross Mathews!

Hello, everybody!

I'm seeing so many costumes.
You all look great.

We have chosen
of the scream of the crop.

The best of the possessed.
The hairiest of the scariest.

Okay, I'll stop.

And one of these angels
will be taking home our grand prize,

but it's not going to be me
judging this time, okay?

Judging our spook-tacular costumes,

our devilishly delightful judges
this evening:

This is a very serious job!

This trio's from Portland, Oregon.

The first time Autumn watched the movie,
she was enchanted by the costumes,

and during the end credits
would jump from couch to couch

on her toy broom, pretending to fly.

Up next it's Jeffrey Kotch!

He is the Swamp Witch!

When he's not the Swamp Witch,

Jeff works for the Los Angeles
Department of Water and Power

and he makes his costumes
in his free time.

The Swamp Witch uses
that dimly-lit lantern for her eyes,

which means we all look better
in that lighting.

Honey, it's like bar lighting. Am I right?

Let's hear it for Jeffrey Kotch,
the Swamp Witch!

Our next costume was designed
by Hallie Brewer

and is modeled by Nikki Burquez.

She is a Faerie.

Kelly, I think I wore that to brunch once.

I think you did, Ross. I think you did.

The Faerie is a woodland creature.

Brightly colored to give
an alien-esque, unicorn feel.

Hallie is a sales associate,
but her true passion is creating costumes.

Let's hear it for our Faerie!

Up next, say hello to Bridget McCarty.

She is dressed as the mom
from Hocus Pocus,

Jenny Dennison, dressed as Madonna.

Bridget has loved the Madonna bra
since she was just a kid.

Up next it's Mike Keyser: Stitchface!

Mike was making a scary scarecrow costume,

and that's how Stitchface was born.

His favorite Hocus Pocus
character is Winifred.

a coupon when you get plastic surgery.

So be careful.

Oh, look, he is in stitches.
He liked my joke.

Oh, God, no. God, no. No!

Up next, Theresa Ireland.

A pop-art Marilyn.

Honey, don't worry,
there's a cream for that.

[chuckles] JK.

Inspired by Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol,
this costume answers the question,

"What if Marilyn Monroe walked
off the pages of a pop-art comic book?"

She'd look something like this.

Our next contestant is Kyle Vest.

Guess what Kyle's dressed as.

-It's Billy Butcherson!
-[audience cheering]

Isn't dry shampoo wonderful?

Kyle's from Florida.

He started designing haunted houses
when he was just eight years old.

How about that?

Let's bring all the contestants
from the first round out here.

While we do that, I gotta ask the judges,

how do you feel about our first round?

-This is gonna be one tough competition.
-I love them all.

I think they're all so good.

I think that just the detail
and, you know, the dust

and the itchiness…
It's all fabulous, honey.

[Mathews] We're just getting started too.

Everybody, breathe in all this beauty,

That was the best costume show
I've ever seen, and it's not even over.

That's one of the things Hocus Pocus
is famous for: amazing costumes.

[chuckles] Not very convincing.

Guys, the otherworldly star of the
Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water,

as well as groundbreaking performances
in Pan's Labyrinth--

yeah, that's right--
Hellboy and Star Trek Discovery,

it's our own Billy Butcherson: Doug Jones!

[audience cheers]

Hello! Oh! Oh!

Hi! Hi! Hi!

Wow!

years, and I look younger
than everyone else.

Right? I was back then.

I know.

Twenty-five years ago,

I had no idea that my big break
would require five hours of make-up a day.

And that the rest of my career
would require hours more.

Yes, I have used a lot of baby wipes.

And yes, I have had molds taken
of every part of my body.

[audience whoops]

[chuckles]

But really, this was
my first big role on-screen.

And Billy remains a big role in my heart.

It was literally the first time I had
been made up beyond recognition.

And the best make-up
and special effects artists

worked on Hocus Pocus, the very best.

Every character took hours to create.

It's such a cool process
and this is how it was done.

[Mick Garris]
The special effects are pretty impressive,

and not the kind you normally see
in a family film.

[Ortega] And I think that they hold up,

considering how new
the art form was in , still.

Nice going, Max.

[Ortega] Like Binx the cat, of course.

It's hallowed ground.

-Witches can't set foot here.
-He talks.

We had to rehearse with these cats,
like, over and over again.

-We had a buzzer.
-[buzzing sounds]

The buzzer would actually tell the cat
that we had food in our pockets.

Then we could "buzz, buzz"
and they knew to follow us.

[buzzing]

So, yeah, that's how you train a cat.

[Garris] This was right around
the birth of CGI, and it holds up today.

You believe that that's a talking cat.

You're going to turn me into one of
those fat, useless, contented house cats.

[chuckles] You betcha.

I first saw the special effects
when I saw the picture.

It became what it was
in the postproduction.

You… there!

[witches cackle]

One of the witches threw me up
against the wall.

I was all harnessed up,
and I got launched up in the air.

And to see that on screen
was really supercool.

I had utter confidence in them,
because after all it was Disney,

and that's what they do.

-[cackles]
-They make magic.

Max, come on. Let's go.

I really appreciate
the old-school way of filmmaking.

Like the moths coming out of my mouth.

Which now would be a CG effect
added in postproduction,

but back then, in , we really did it.

Those things
were living inside of his mouth

in some kind of a balloon contraption.

[technician]
Put your lips back a little more. Great.

[Jones] I had a latex sheath

that would then protect the moths
from the moisture of my mouth,

'cause moths, they won't fly
if they're not dry.

So dust and moths in this contraption,
so I could go… [coughs] …and "Pfft!"

-[Ortega] Cut. Yeah!
-[crew members applaud and whoop]

[meows]

[echoing] The witches are dead.
My soul's finally free.

[Sean Murray] I didn't really
get to see the special effects stuff

until after the movie was made.

And still, to this day,
one of my favorite special effects

was the very last image of Thackery
and his sister kind of walking away

into the gates of paradise.

I mean, that's a painting.

[audience cheering]

The amount of people out there
that know every word to the film

and are excited about
everybody here, it's unbelievable.

-You managed to do all of that from there?

Tobias, you've been pretty busy.
You were great in Stranger Things.

Is there anything else that you
want to give a shout-out to?

Just did a really fun show,
American Woman,

with Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari.

-Had a lot of fun on Arrow last year.
-Amazing.

Thank you both for being with us
on this super special night.

You both created
very memorable characters.

As did everybody in the film, really.
Pretty fun stuff. Let's take a look.

Oh, look. Another glorious morning.

It makes me sick!

I loved my character. I loved Winnie.
As soon as I put those teeth in…

it came-- she came to me.

Her bossiness, her wanting her way,
her imperiousness. Everything just came.

You know, I always wanted a child
and now I think I'll have one…

on toast!

I do not believe that you
can see me in that character.

I mean,
I was so hidden behind all that stuff

that I was allowed to do things
that I would never have done,

and the freedom that you get
when you are hidden is fantastic.

-[barks]
-[Najimy] My character Mary

smells out children, and I thought, "Well,
why don't we make her half bloodhound?"

So that's why she barks
every once in a while.

[growling, barking]

We had many actors that had
theatrical backgrounds.

I am beautiful! Boys will love me!

[Parker]
Kenny was a very important choreographer,

and he approached this movie probably
with that same sort of musical energy.

Think soothing thoughts.

Rabid bats, black death.
Mummy's scorpion pie.

[all] Mother!

[Ortega]
These were real seasoned performers

that came to us
with incredible imaginations,

incredible improvisational skills
and a fearlessness as actors.

Yes!

My background was as a mime.

When you take verbal dialogue away
from a large part of the film for me,

then you do become a silent film star.

[Winifred] Billy, follow those children,
you maggot museum.

In Kenny Ortega's world
a good idea comes from anywhere.

So when you work in that environment
everyone wants to pitch in.

Halt!

A lot of it was developed off camera.

So much of it was Larry and I
riffing and improv-ing in the hotel room.

We had that chemistry, you know,

and Kenny saw that
and let us do our thing.

-I just moved here.
-From where?

Los Angeles.

LA?

Oh! Dude!

Tubular!

We brought that to Kenny.
We were so proud that he said yes.

-Right.
-It made it into the movie.

Ding, ding. Stop and pay the toll, kid.

Drop dead, moron.

I am still blown away
by Thora's performance.

It's been great fun,
but I guess I better be going.

Oh, stay for supper.

Thora remembered every line
of any person in the movie.

I'm… I'm… I'm not hungry.

Oh. But we are.

[Garris] I think the Sanderson Sisters
are so perfectly cast.

Like a supernatural Three Stooges.

In drag.

All Hallows Eve
has become a night of frolic

where children wear costumes and run amok.

And now, you've pretty much
heard these guys everywhere.

They're pretty much
taking over their headline tour

and climbing the charts
with their new song "Solita."

They're pretty much k*lling it right now.

Yeah. Um… How overwhelmingly exciting

and great this is

that you all came out to celebrate

a little skit we did in the early ' s.

I mean, we had no idea at the time.

I've done loads of projects and films

and, honestly, when you are making them,
you don't have any idea.

You never, ever really know
which ones are gonna like fly away

and disappear into the night
on broomsticks.

And which ones are going
to magically seep into the zeitgeist

and the veins of you all forever.

And all of you crazy-a*s fans.

Thank God for you.

You have really made sure that
this one sticks, and we thank you.

Believe me, we are all, like, gobsmacked
by your rabid devotion.

Bette, Sarah Jessica and I had no idea
when we were filming

that every Halloween
we'd be honored in costume parades

-by gaggles and gaggles of the gays.
-[audience cheers]

Where are my gays? Hi, Mary.

Oh!

We had such an experience,
all three of us,

that we will never, ever forget.

-Mainly 'cause you won't let us. Um…
-[audience laughs]

We did know something, though.

We knew that Disney had
something special with this cast,

those kids, our crew, Peggy Holmes,

our writers, who were apparently
way ahead of their time.

But most of all,

and I really mean this, 'cause I've been
working with this man for over years,

the real magic came
from my creative genius friend,

our director Kenny Ortega.

[audience cheers]

Oh, my gosh. You guys, you don't even
want to know what's inside of that mind.

Open up that mind
and it's some sort of crazy…

I mean, there's a lot going on in there.

So we thank him.
And, thanks to all of you,

we have kicked Freddy Krueger and
the Wicked Witch of the West to the curb.

On their asses.

We do. This is overwhelming.

[Midler] Flying in Hocus Pocus
was really extraordinary.

That is one of the greatest joys
I've ever experienced as an actor.

[cackles]

I really loved the flying the best.

Winnie, I'm coming!

[Parker] I would do any flying
they asked me. I loved it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say--
or I'm gonna go out on a broom

and I'm gonna say that I enjoyed it
more than anybody.

Brave little virgin who lit the candle,
I'll be thy friend.

We did all that flying on set.

We had flying rigs on the ceiling
that were super-complicated.

They wanted to master that flying.

[Ortega] You know, backstage,
hoisting up flying witches,

not doing it with computers.

This was all… [laughs]

So great. I just want to prolong it
a little bit… You know?

[Najimy] We would just be hanging
up there, sometimes for hours,

till they would swoop us,
and the faster the better.

The faster the better.
I absolutely loved it.

[screams]

I just had no fear about it, like…
And I have fear.

But I had none about that.

-Aah!
-[screams]

I was so excited
because I was the only one

out of Vinessa and Omri and I
who got to fly.

Dani!

In a harness up on wires
suspended in the air.

The harnesses are not comfortable.

It's like relaxing into a bucket.

With legs.

But it's still really fun.

Damn, damn, double damn!

It's joyful. It's also a dance.
There's a lot of trying to be graceful

while not being sure you weren't
going to be turned upside down.

-[crew member] Now!
-[all yelling]

I remember when Bette's broomstick
grazed my head a little bit.

[Midler]
I got off the broom and I turned around.

She was holding her head.
I realized something happened.

Sorry! Oh, baby!

And she immediately stopped the shot

and whipped around
just to make sure I was safe.

I was pretty distraught over that.
She was really, you know, a trouper.

[Birch] Bette was incredible with me.

At one point she broke out into song.

I believe it was "Wind Beneath My Wings."

I was like, "Right!
'Cause we're up in the air."

And there have been an unprecedented
amount of screenings on Freeform.

It is the Hocus Pocus effect, after all.

We didn't have a great opening weekend.

You know, I'll tell you the truth.

When the movie came out,
I fully expected it

to be embraced, but it was not.

And I sort of thought,
"Oh, gee, what a shame."

It tanked in the theater
and was considered a b*mb, really.

[Kirschner] I cannot explain
why it came out in July,

and it came out against Jurassic Park,
the same weekend.

We were swimming upstream,
that's for sure.

[Ortega] At that time,
I just think that there was confusion

as to how to present Hocus Pocus.

[Jones] Box office numbers
weren't what everyone had hoped for.

So I thought, "That's the end of that.
It didn't play and it's gone forever."

Then it just kind of went away.

Hocus Pocus is more popular
than it ever has been today.

It's unbelievable how this
has become such a cult classic.

I remember the first Halloween I saw
children dressed as the Sanderson Sisters.

And I went what?

It just sort of blew up.

For the last five or so years, it's
reached kind of a frenzied fever pitch.

There's books, action figures,
dolls, artwork, tattoos.

I have been tattooed on people. Yes.
These are things I never expected.

There's like Rocky Horror
Picture Show-type of stuff going on.

People reenacting the movie.

I know there's been drag shows.
I know there are videos.

Sisters, we fly!

It's really part of
the iconography of Halloween.

Who knew that our little Halloween flick

would become a crazy, freaky, fan success?

[Ortega]
The El Capitan theater in Los Angeles

runs the movie for weeks
all through the month of October.

Amok! Amok! Amok!

Kenny and John Debney
and Vinessa and I did a panel,

and then we watched the movie
with the fans. It was unbelievable.

So fun to watch on the big screen again.

I think one can call Hocus Pocus
a success.

Disney World has a show every fall,

a Sanderson Sisters
Hocus Pocus live production.

It has been years
since we have last returned.

[audience cheers]

It's our silver anniversary.

I love you, jerk face.

Hocus Pocus is timeless. It just keeps
going from generation to generation.

for a lot of people.
