where the Nacrene City Gym is located

our Heroes met Lenora, the Gym Leader

who is also the curator of the museum!

One cannot help but wonder what Lenora's Battle style will be!

We'll soon find out though, as Ash's Battle for his

second Unova Gym Badge is about to begin!

Knowledge can be very important in a Pokemon Battle.

Truth is, this may be part of your Gym Battle.

It's quite possible that everything Lenora

is saying and doing is simply her method of testing you.

You see, I've been testing you

when I recommend they read a book

nine times out of ten, they'll go directly

to whatever book they're most interested in.

Even though I show them the quickest way to get to my Gym.

But, why do you do that?

Because most challengers will get sidetracked

by reading too much into what I say.

So, in order to rush into the Gym

they'll usually choose books that they're interested in

or thin books they think they can finish quickly.

I can generally tell what a Trainer is going to be like

by how they react in this kind of situation.

Okay, so what kind of Trainer do you think Ash is?

how that aggressiveness is going to play itself out

when we get on the b*ttlefield.

I think it will be fairly easy to predict.

Both Watchog and Lillipup are excellent Pokemon

who respond well to Lenora's commands.

They're such excellent Pokemon

that they also help out with museum security.

- 'Pup.' - Huh?

Hey there. You're a friendly Pokemon.

Normal-type Pokemon are perfect for Gym Battles.

That's because they don't have any of the limitations

of Pokemon that are bound to a certain element.

[chuckling]

'This allows me the flexibility'

'to respond to any strategy challengers may use against me.'

is about to begin.

that will force ones opponent to switch their Pokemon.

but now I can't use the Combination I wanted.

It's not all that difficult to see

how off balance you are right about now.

And Lenora's testing of Ash goes on and on.

If he gets caught off guard this early

it'll be hard to recover.

Ash, move on. Oshawott has no choice but to battle.

Yeah, let's do it. Your turn just came up a little early.

Oshawott.

It looks like Oshawott's not amused.

Probably upset at battling earlier than it planned.

Watchog is fast.

And very good at being able to choose

when to move and when not to.

Quick, Oshawott, jump up and over Watchog.

Ash has always been good with the element of surprise.

I was planning on surprising them by using Water g*n

and then finishing it up with Razor Shell

but my close-range strategy didn't work.

It seemed to be going so well with Water g*n.

Actually, I really don't think it was.

- Pika. - Axew.

Ash and Oshawott did do a good job

avoiding Watchog's Low Kick by jumping above it

but I think Lenora's move worked even better than that.

You mean when they lured them in

and knocked away Oshawott's Scalchop?

Mm-hm. She knew exactly what Ash was going to do.

'Lenora's amazing.'

Now, Watchog, return.

- You're switching Pokemon? - Yes.

This is starting to be fun. Lillipup, your turn!

Alright. I guess our Battle boils down to this.

Remember our training. Tepig, I choose you!

Tepig!

Wow! Tepig's still got tons of spirit.

Tepig seems to be more psyched than ever

even after being forced out with Roar.

Tepig will have to carry on after Oshawott

and Lenora's not going to let up a single bit.

- Now, use Tackle! - Tepig, Tepig, Tepig!

Dodge it, quick.

Tepig. Pig?

Whoa! That's fast.

Use Shadow Ball!

[grunting]

Tepig, no!

[groaning]

Stay strong and use Ember!

[grunting]

Lillipup, Take Down, let's go!

[grunting]

Why won't Ember work?

[groaning]

Tepig is unable to battle, so, Lillipup wins.

'And the victor is Lenora, the Gym Leader!'

Thanks a lot, Tepig. You battled really hard.

Truth is, it was my fault, not yours, that we lost this.

I'm really sorry you've got a weak Trainer like me.

A shame about the battle.

Both Oshawott and Tepig battled really hard for me

but still, I guess I've got a lot to learn.

From that moment on, nothing went the way

I planned it, no matter what.

You were forced to switch Pokemon

right after the battle started

which would have thrown off anyone.

Much to be learned from this.

You would do well to become more like Lenora

so you can deal with anything in battle

that might happen to come up.

Yeah, you're right.

You should also train your Pokemon

so their power and speed improves.

Tepig and Oshawott just can't keep up as things are right now.

Yeah. And you need to think on your feet and react faster.
