ASH "Lessons in Lilycove."

[screaming]

Oh, no, May!

Quick, Dodge it!

Watch out!

[EXERTION]

Peck, Combusken!

[PECK MOVE]

Alright!

Great idea!

Don't stop!

Use your Fire Spin

to gather all those flames!

[FIRE SPIN MOVE]

How did she pull that off?

'May has Combusken's Fire Spin back under control'

'and it looks like she's turned a bad situation'

'to her advantage.'

May has shown both creativity and courage

as she finds the beauty in danger.

Remarkable!

I'm not sure it was intentional

but the result was certainly dramatic.

That was awesome!

Yeah. I thought she was a goner for sure.

Great recovery, May.

GRUMPIG [AGREEMENT]

Yeah! Way to go.

PIKACHU/SWELLOW [AGREEMENT]

Now, throw a Fireball and then hit it with Sky Uppercut!

[EXERTION]

[SKY UPPERCUT MOVE]

You did it!

[AFFIRMATIVE]

[cheering]

What a wonderful contest opening

as May and Combusken turn out a beautiful performance.

Now, let's see what the judges have to say.

VIVIAN '.!'

Now, Contesta, you gave her worse marks

than the others did.

Can you tell us your reasons?

Losing control of her Fire Spin

showed a disturbing lack of concentration and teamwork.

'The performance following it was wonderful'

'but I still had to take that into account.'

[ASHAMED]

Hey, that wasn't your fault, Combusken.

You were only trying to give them your best performance.

And I just bet you we'll make it to the second round anyway.

[UNHAPPY]

.?

That's a pretty low score.

Yeah, she might be in trouble

if she runs into some tough competition.

Wow, May. I thought it was over.

But then you recovered so well

it almost seemed like you planned it that way.

[AGREEMENT]

Well, I owe it all to Combusken.

It jumped between me and the Fire Spin

when it saw I was in danger.

If it was willing to make such a sacrifice for me

I had to get it together and come up with something.

So, that's when I got the idea to use the flames

as part of our show!

Well, all I can say is, watching you inspires me

to do my best. Right?

We'll give them a show like they've never seen before.

[AGREEMENT]

[thinking] With a score like that

the girl Twerp's almost sure

to get disqualified.

She's making it too easy for me to win this contest.

Alright, Swellow, Aerial Ace again.

[AERIAL ACE MOVE]

[PAINED]

Swellow, are you okay?

PIKACHU [CONCERNED]

SWELLOW [ANGRY]

Calm down.

You can't concentrate well if you get all upset.

[UNHAPPY]

I know, 'cause that's what everybody

keeps trying to tell me.

[AMUSED]

Pikachu.

[SHEEPISH]

VIVIAN 'Let's meet our next contestant, ladies and gentlemen.'

'Her name is Kelly and she hails'

'from right here in Lilycove City.'

'I've got a feeling she's gonna be good.'

[AGREEMENT]

Here we go now, Grumpig, it's time for us

to show the world what we're made of.

Grumpig, let's do it.

[APPEARING]

[EXERTION]

VIVIAN 'And Grumpig takes the stage'

'with a creative use of its physical traits.'

Now, it's a block party.

What? Why's she scattering Pokéblock?

There must be some method to her madness.

Go, Grumpig, let's get Psychic.

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

VIVIAN 'Grumpig is using Psychic to hold the Pokéblock in midair.'

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

'And now it's spinning the blocks in formation.'

'They're showing everyone just what'

'a Manipulate Pokémon can do.'

Whoa. That's pretty incredible.

Now juggle them, Grumpig.

[JUGGLING]

Everyone, clap your hands.

Go! Go! Go! Go!

CROWD Go! Go! Go! Go!

VIVIAN 'What a crowd-pleasing performance.'

Everybody here, even the judges, are clapping

along with Kelly and her Grumpig's aerial display.

- Never seen anything like this. - Yeah.

Getting the whole crowd into the act was a great plan.

Wow, I was right. She's really good.

[AGREEMENT]

Alright, Grumpig. Finish this up with Bounce.

[BOUNCE MOVE]

[CHEWING]

Well, that's it, folks.

[cheering]

Bravo! Great job, Kelly.

Kelly and her Grumpig managed to pull

the whole audience here into her act.

Very impressive.

Now, let's see what the judges thought.

VIVIAN '.'

Kelly and Grumpig, clear crowd favorites

'at this early stage in the contest'

'leap into first place.'

Yeah.

You were really great.

By giving Kelly a score like that

the judges must be sending a message

that putting on a really good show

is just as important as skill and technique.

Hopefully, May'll make it into the second round

and then she can try and get the crowd into it the same way.

That was such an awesome performance, Kelly.

You and Grumpig made it all look so easy.

Well, that's a relief, because

you know it wasn't easy at all.

Grumpig and I worked for months to get that down.

Watching a performance like that has made me

even more determined.

I just have to make it into the second round.

I just have to, have to, have to, have to, have to..

[EXERTION]

Okay, Swellow, now bring it in low.

[EXERTION]

That's it, good job!

[AGREEMENT]

[SURPRISED]

[HAPPY]

[DAZED]

Swellow, are you hurt?

PIKACHU [CONCERNED]

SWELLOW [PAINED]

Well, I'm really proud of you, Swellow.

You got the low flying part down great.

So, now we just gotta work on hitting that bull's eye.

And remember what Ralph said.

Keep on trying till you succeed.

PIKACHU [AGREEMENT]

[AFFIRMATIVE]

VIVIAN 'Ladies and gentlemen'

'let me introduce our final entry'

'the mysterious Jessafina.'

Sounds like Jessie's up.

Poor Chimecho.

Jessie, please don't hurt my little pal.

Come on, Chimecho.

[APPEARING]

[AFFIRMATIVE]

Use Heal Bell.

[HEAL BELL MOVE]

VIVIAN 'Oh, now isn't that a beautiful sound?'

It's having a healing, calming effect

on the entire audience.

Chimecho.

I've heard that a Chimecho's tune

can change according to the love

they receive from their Trainers.

And based on that song it would seem

this Chimecho's Trainer really loves it a lot, huh?

I feel so peaceful.

- I love you, guys. - I know.

Makes you forget for a moment you're supposed to be a judge.

Ah. What a wonderful feeling.

Kinda boring though, isn't it?

Huh?

I'd rather see something powerful

or outrageous, or mysterious

or wild and crazy.

No, no, don't do it.

Keep it simple. Simple is fine.

Why don't we crank this show up a couple of notches.

Chimecho, Astonish.

[ASTONISH MOVE]

[gasping]

[groaning]

What is that?

WOBBUFFET [PAINED]

Jessie, don't push Chimecho that way.

Poor Chimecho.

[gasping]

Boy, is that painful.

Now, isn't that a lot more interesting?

Alright then, let's really let them have it.

[ASTONISH MOVE]

[gasping]

What is that sound?

PIKACHU/SWELLOW [PAINED]

Well, Chimecho and Jessafina

have certainly given us all an earful today.

Let's see what the judges have to say about it.

VIVIAN 'Thirty points.'

The judges have given Jessafina a perfect score.

- What? - What?

But why?

Jessafina's departure from the soothing sound

to its painful opposite was brilliant in that

it was the last thing anyone was expecting.

'It's that kind of daring and imagination that separates'

'the ordinary contestant from the truly'

'great Pokémon Coordinator.'

That's me, alright. Truly great.

[PUZZLED]

Seeing how Jessie was able to wrangle out

those abilities from Chimecho

she might be a better combo with it than you are, James.

[AFFIRMATIVE]

What are you saying?

Chimecho loves only me.

And now, with the first round completed

let's look at our winning Coordinators.

'The scores are in and here they are'

'the eight who will go on to the second round.'

Come on, May. Don't worry.

You're gonna make it.

PIKACHU [AGREEMENT]

VIVIAN 'Six, seven, eight. There they are, folks.'

I'm in.

So we both go on.

Mm-hmm. Good job.

Now the computer will randomly pair

the remaining contestants.

'Keep your eyes on the screen ladies and gentlemen.'

'This is a critical part of the contest.'

'And there are your second-round matchups.'

'Which four coordinators will make it through'

'to the Final Stage, and a shot at the treasured'

'Lilycove ribbon?'

I will. I just know.

I can see myself smirking at all the losers already.

Hey, Kelly, I'll see you on the Final Stage, right?

Yeah, that'll be a great battle.

[EXERTION]

Missed it.

PIKACHU [AGREEMENT]

Still having trouble?

You can say that again.

It would help if you had some sort of a signal.

- A signal? - That's right.

Something you can yell out to tell your Swellow exactly

when to switch from flight mode to attack mode.

Of course, timing is critical

so you must pay close attention.

But then, you'll find that the signal may even help

motivate your Pokémon because it feels

you are both in the battle together.

Thank you, Ralph. We'll try that.

VIVIAN 'It's been an amazing series of battles here'

'on the second stage, but the semi-finalists'

'have finally been selected.'

'Here are the fantastic four'

'who will go on through to the next stage.'

And now our first pairing, it's May versus Jessafina.

'Let the battle begin.'

Combusken. Come on, let's go.

[APPEARING]/[AFFIRMATIVE]

Okay. Chimecho.

[APPEARING]/[AFFIRMATIVE]

Use Quick Attack.

COMBUSKEN/CHIMECHO [QUICK ATTACK MOVE]/[PAINED]

Ah! No!

VIVIAN 'That took a bite out of Jessafina's points.'

I'll make you pay for that one.

Chimecho, smack them with your Wrap attack.

CHIMECHO/COMBUSKEN [WRAP MOVE]/[PAINED]

Uh, Combusken.

Ha! I've got you covered now.

VIVIAN 'May's points are dropping. Can she recover?'

- Come on, May. - This is bad.

She's gotta get out of that attack.

VIVIAN 'Still wrapped up tight by Chimecho'

'Combusken appears unable to use any of its attacks.'

Come on, May, you know what to do, right?

GRUMPIG [AGREEMENT]

I know.

Use Peck, Combusken.

[PECK MOVE]

[James whimpering]

VIVIAN 'Combusken managed to escape.'

Now, Combusken, Fire Spin.

She's using fire?

[FIRE SPIN MOVE]

[SCARED]

VIVIAN 'Now, it's Chimecho that's trapped, with Fire Spin.'

I knew you could do it. Good job, May.

GRUMPIG [AGREEMENT]

Stop it, please.

When you're hurting my Chimecho you're hurting me.

VIVIAN 'Now, it's Jessafina's points going down faster'

'than a sinking Snorlax.'

[growling]

No way am I losing to this Twerpy little girl

after I nailed a perfect score in the opening round.

This ridiculous Pokémon must have other attacks.

Whatever you do don't even think

about using the Double-Edge attack

with my dear Chimecho.

- Ha! That's it. - Oh, boy.

That's the look Jessie gets

when she's planning something evil.

No. Please don't do it. Don't use Double-Edge attack.

Chimecho, use that Double-Edge attack.

[DOUBLE EDGE MOVE]

Oh, no.

Wobbuffet, it's time to say goodbye to Chimecho

'cause when you hit an opponent with a Double-Edge attack

it comes right back at you.

[DOUBLE EDGE MOVE]

Dodge it, Combusken.

[EXERTION]

Now, Combusken, use Sky Uppercut.

[SKY UPPERCUT MOVE]

[PAINED]

[screaming]

Perfect. Jessie and Chimecho knock each other out.'

Wow. Chimecho is unable to battle.

'May wins the round and a spot in the final match.'

Yeah.

[HAPPY]

[EXERTION]

Okay, attack.

[EXERTION]

[DISAPPOINTED]

- Don't give up, Ash. - Huh?

Swellow's low-altitude flight path

and the signal you're giving it to attack are almost perfect.

Now it's just a matter of you getting your timing in sync.

Then you will have mastered Aerial Ace.

You think so?

Now, Swellow, let's do it again.

[AFFIRMATIVE]

[EXERTION]

Attack.

[EXERTION]

Hey.

Swellow, we finally did it.

PIKACHU [AGREEMENT]

SWELLOW [HAPPY]

Now that you have hit on the perfect timing, Ash

it is vital that you practice the maneuver again and again,

until it becomes automatic for you and for your Swellow.

Right. Well, you heard it.

Let's do Aerial Ace again.

[AFFIRMATIVE]

Gah!

How disgusting to lose

just because your Chimecho's Double-Edge attack missed.

Don't blame Chimecho.

CHIMECHO [HAPPY]

[EXCITED]

Hmm?

VIVIAN 'Ladies and gentlemen, presenting our two finalists.'

Hey, Kelly and May are both in the finals.

[AGREEMENT]

[AERIAL ACE MOVE]

[screaming]

Well, that didn't feel so good.

What happened, did we run a red light or something?

I'll tell you what happened.

It was that screeching Chimecho's fault again.

Don't give Chimecho that guilt trip.

[AGREEMENT]

TEAM ROCKET Speaking of trips

we're blasting off again.

CHIMECHO [HAPPY]

VIVIAN 'This is it.'

The final round to determine

the winner of the Lilycove Coordinator Contest.

Here they are on the Final Stage, May and Kelly.

It worked out just like we hoped it would.

Pretty cool, huh?

So, how's your Aerial Ace?

It took a while, but I think we've got it down.

Good job, Ash.

Yeah, way to go.

Now, I'm excited to see a great battle

and a victory for May.

You ready, Kelly?

It's down to you and me

and I'm giving it all I got.

I'm ready, May, but you better get ready

for the power of Grumpig's Dark Pearl.

VIVIAN 'Let the battle begin.'

Combusken, come on out.

[APPEARING]

[AFFIRMATIVE]

Go, Grumpig.

[APPEARING]

[AFFIRMATIVE]

Iron Tail, Grumpig. Now!

[IRON TAIL MOVE]

Block that.

[EXERTION]

VIVIAN 'Oh. A perfect block on Grumpig's Iron Tail.'

'That cost Kelly some points.'

That was pretty good, May.

Hit them with Fire Spin, now!

[FIRE SPIN MOVE]

Psychic, Grumpig.

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

- Ah! - What is that?

I've never seen it before.

Quite a stunt.

Grumpig used Psychic

to turn Fire Spin right back at May.

Sky Uppercut.

[SKY UPPERCUT MOVE]

Now. Grumpig, use Psychic directly on Combusken. Go!

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

[ALARMED]

Oh, Combusken.

VIVIAN 'May is losing major points with that attack.'

'Psychic attack is now hitting Combusken directly.'

'And time is quickly running out for May and Combusken.'

Hang on, May, don't give up.

How can she break Combusken loose?

Come on, May. You can still win this.

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

Good job, Grumpig. Just keep doing it.

Any attack I use, she'll turn it right back on us with Psychic.

Maybe that could help us?

Yeah.

I'm gonna finish you now, May.

Now, use Bounce attack, Grumpig.

[BOUNCE MOVE]

Oh, no, Combusken isn't able to defend itself at all.

It's over if Bounce hits.

Combusken, Fire Spin, now.

Nice try, May. Grumpig?

[PSYCHIC MOVE]

[STRUGGLING]

Psychic will just turn it back again.

And that's what I was planning on.

What?

Combusken, aim Fire Spin at the ceiling.

[FIRE SPIN MOVE]

[SURPRISED]/[SCARED]

[gasp]

VIVIAN 'What an amazing change in strategy.'

'Combusken is bouncing its Fire Spin off the ceiling'

'and down onto Grumpig.'

- Oh, Grumpig. - Not too bad, huh?

What an awesome comeback.

I knew you'd do it, May.

I don't think she knows it yet

but she's got this contest won.

Huh?

- You think so? - Yep.

May is now a couple moves ahead of Kelly.

Like a good chess game strategy

she knows Kelly wants to use Psychic

to directly counter Fire Spin.

By aiming at the ceiling,

Grumpig can't possibly get in position to do that.

'All it can do is continue Psychic from the side'

'and pretty soon the flames are going to knock it out.'

'What a great strategy.'

Alright. Way to go, May.

PIKACHU [AGREEMENT]

[TIRED]

VIVIAN 'Oh. Grumpig's Psychic has let go.'

'And now both Pokémon are crashing to the ground.'

Grumpig!

Combusken, help Grumpig now.

[EXERTION]

[FIRE SPIN MOVE]

VIVIAN 'Time has run out.'

'What a perfect use of Fire Spin'

'with May and Combusken saving their opponent'

'at the last second.'

'Our clear winner, Combusken and May!'

Alright! Combusken, you were great.

[HAPPY]

You know, a lot of opponents would've taken advantage

and attacked Grumpig while it was helpless like that.

Not May. She wouldn't even think about doing that.

And she won the match anyway.

That was a really cool thing to do.
