but once I twisted the truth
so much
that I ran into big trouble
in Australia.
This is a true story,
and that's no lie.

I was working
in the Australian outback
pulling goods trains
when I was surprised
by an old friend.
- Look out for that dingo!
- Huh? Where?
- Gotcha!
[whistle blows]
I'm just pulling your chain.
- Oh, hey!
[laughs]
Hello, Shane.
- G'day, Tommo!
- Uh, it's Thomas, actually.
- Here in Australia,
we like to have a bit of fun.
"Good day" is "g'day,"
a story is a "yarn."
- So you make things up?
[Aubrey and Aiden giggling]
- Oh, don't mind those two.
That's Aubrey and Aiden;
they follow me everywhere.
[both giggling]
- Your accent is so funny.
Where are you from?
- Another planet?
[giggling]
- Sodor, actually.
I'm just visiting Australia
to help out on the railway
for a while.
- Righto, you lot!
I'm Shane!
Shane the Plane.
[laughs]
I'm just kidding, folks.
Shane the Train,
and I'm here to entertain.
[whistle blows]

Mind if I tag along?
[whistle toots]
- Go for it, Tommo.

Welcome to the outback, folks.
A wide, brown land
full of mystery,
adventure,
and fascinating animals.
[upbeat music]
Kakadu National Park--
watch out for crocodiles.
Once, a sneaky croc
snuck aboard
and hitched a lift!
[all laughing]
- But seriously, folks,
Kakadu is home
to , crocodiles,
some of them as heavy
as a small car.
Hey, look, there's one now!
- [gasps]
Ooh!
- These here are luxury
high-rise apartments...
for termites!
[all laughing]
- [laughing]
- Otherwise known as:
a termite mound.
Look out!
It's a flying koala!
- [gasps]
- Just joking!
That's Isla,
the flying doctor's plane.
- Oh!
Look at that!
- Hello, Isla!
- G'day, Shane!
[rousing music]

- A few days later, I was back
at Pine Tree Station again
delivering some cars.
- Hey, it's that engine
with the funny accent.
[laughing]
- Where's Shane?
- Oh, he hasn't
turned up yet, Thomas.
He should have been here
hours ago.
- Excuse me?
Are you the outback tour train?
- Uh, um...
well, uh...
I should have told the truth,
but maybe this was a chance
to be a fun tour guide,
just like Shane.
[ding]
Y-y-yeah, that's me.
[laughs]
I'm Thomas the, uh...
- Hippopotamus?
[horn toots]
- Thomas the Hippopotamus!
[laughs awkwardly]
Just kidding.
[laughs]
I'm Thomas the Tour Train
and, uh,
hop on and let's roll!
[metal clanking]
[whistle toots]
Welcome to the outback--
a, um...
wide, dirty land full of, uh,
mysterious, weird things,
and funny-looking animals.
- This ought to be a laugh,
eh, Aubrey?
[both laughing]
- Oh, yes--
crocodiles!
This is the place they live.
There's million of them
and, uh...
they eat cars.
- Huh?
- [laughing]
How embarrassing.
- He's making a total wombat
of himself.
- And what's that?
- Oh, a--
a luxury mansion for, uh,
ladybugs.
- [laughing]
- I couldn't quite remember
all the facts,
so instead I had fun
making things up,
just like Shane.
And look, there's
a giant bunny rabbit.
- Really?
I'm pretty sure
that's a kangaroo.
- Uh, n--no, no,
that's a--a kanga-rabbit.
- What's that big red thing
way across the desert?
That's a big
red bus.
Yeah.
And it's driven by the Queen
of Australia,
Queen Kylie the Third.
[both laughing]
- Are you sure
you're a tour guide?
- Of course.
I'm a professional.
- Thomas, you've taken
the wrong track.
You need to stop
and go back.
- I should have listened
to Aubrey,
but that would mean admitting
I wasn't really a tour guide,
and I didn't want
to have to do that.
Where are we?
- Thomas, stop!
The old rickety bridge
hasn't been used in years!
- Aubrey's right,
it could be dangerous.
- It looks all right to me.
[nervous laughter]
[gasps]
- Ah!
- Whoa!
[hollering]
[dramatic music]
- Back up! Back up!

- Stop!
Don't move!
- I'm so sorry, everyone.
I'm not a tour train at all.
I got us stuck
in the middle of nowhere.
Now what do we do?
[engine buzzing]
It's Isla.
Oh, Isla!
[whistle tooting]
Come save us!
Help!
- Isla!
- Isla!

- Oh, she can't hear us.
- We'll never get
back home now,
- And anything could happen
out here in the outback.
[mystical music]

[gasps]

[crocodiles growling]
- Thomas!
The coupling is breaking!
- [hollering]
Ah!
[treacherous music]
Huh?
Oh, it's you, Shane.
- Did you think
I was a giant croc?
[laughs]
No, mate,
Isla told me that you needed
to be rescued, Tommo.
Phew, this looks like
a complete dingo's breakfast!
- A what?
- A complete mess!
- [sighs]
[crowd cheering]
[cheerful music]
- And you told them we had
a queen named Kylie?
We should be so lucky.
I've told a wild yarn
in my time,
but that sounds like
flat-out fibbing.
- I was just trying
to entertain everyone
like you do.
But I guess there's
a difference
between making up jokes
and making up facts.
- Too right, Tommo.
Now, tell me again about
where a kanga-rabbit
keeps his carrots.
[both laughing]
[bell ringing]
[engines chugging]
[whistle toots]
- Have you ever told
a tall tale
or said something
that wasn't exactly true?
I've made things up
a few times.
Once, I caused an accident
at the docks
and tried to blame
a made-up engine
called Geoffrey,
but that just caused
even more trouble.
Pretending I knew things
I didn't know
got me into trouble
in the outback too.
From now on,
if I make something up,
I'll make sure everyone knows
it's not real.
It's just a silly joke.
[laughs]
I'd better get going.
I've got a carriage
full of crocodiles,
and they'll be cranky
if we're late to Crovan's Gate.
[laughing]
That was definitely a joke.
