that he continually resists accepting.

For one who has accepted death is imminent,

all hope vanishes.

[whispering] - I don't remember...

- I remember...

a long time ago,

there was a lot of crying.

I could hear people crying

and I didn't want them to.

My mother and father were crying.

Even my brother was crying,

but he wouldn't let anyone see him.

- Well, I'm going to stop crying.

I won't cry anymore.

I promise.

- But why were you crying?

- Well...

'cause it was so dark in here

and I was frightened

and lonely.

But I'm not going to be lonely anymore.

Now that you're here.

But tell me,

did anyone see you come in here?

- No.

No one ever sees me.

- But-- but this door, it's locked.

- I guess so.

- Well, tell me,

how did you get in here?

- Oh, I have a way.

What's that?

- That's a music box.

- Can I hear it?

- Oh, sure. Of course.

You just lift the cover like this

and then it plays. [music playing]

- Oh...

I like that.

- Do you? - Yes.

- Would you like to have it?

- Oh, I couldn't do that.

It's yours.

- Oh, that's all right.

I want to give it to you.

- Thank you anyway,

but I'm not supposed to take things.

- Little girl, please,

tell me, how did you get in here?

- I like that music, don't you?

- No! I hate that music! [music stops]

[crying] I hate it.

- Can I hear it again sometime?

[sighs]

- Sure.

Little girl,

did you tell your mother and father that you saw me?

- I don't know.

I couldn't find them.

I've been looking for them.

- Well, did you tell anyone about me?

- I couldn't find anyone I knew.

- Little girl, what are you trying to tell me?

Are you trying to tell me that you're lost or something?

- I just keep looking.

They all went away, I guess.

- Well, do you have any friends?

- I have one,

but I don't know where he is.

Will you be my friend?

- Yes.

Yes, of course I'll be your friend.

- Will you play with me? - Yes.

Anything, anything at all.

- Catch? - All right.

- Here.

I like to play ball.

But I'd wish you'd tell me how you got into this room.

- Do you like to sing?

- Well, sure, I do.

- Will you sing with me?

- All right.

- Well, there are other people that live in this house.

And they're not good people.

- Bad people?

- Yes, and they might not like have you here,

so I think you'd better go.

- You want me to go?

- Yes, but I'll come with you.

- Yes, I'll take you.

- Oh, good.

And we'll play and sing.

First, we've gotta get outta here.

Because they'll be coming right away

and that's why we've gotta get out.

Actually, you have the opportunity

of living for a long, long time if you wish.

[music playing] - You could become Josette Collins.

And as Josette, you could live on and on indefinitely.

- No, no! [music stops]

- You're a very foolish girl.

- Do you know that if you reject me that you lose your life?

I can't lose my life.

Because I'm-- I'm going to get out of here.

- And how do you propose to do that?

- Oh, I can't tell you.

And I can keep a secret.

- Well, you keep your secrets.

I won't ask you to give it to me.

You can escape if you'd like.

- Everyone thinks I'm dead, don't they?

- Yes.

- Well, someone knows that I'm alive.

- Oh, and who is that?

- I can't tell you that.

- How do you know that anyone knows?

- My friend knows.

- Your friend?

- I have a friend.

A secret friend.

And that's the best kind to have.

- Of course.

- But it's a special secret friend.

And she comes to play with me.

- Plays with you? - Yes.

We play catch and we have fun together.

- I see.

And when does this take place?

- Oh, I can't tell you that.

- Oh, that's very secret.

But she comes right in this room and plays with me.

Right here.

- Good-bye, Maggie.

[chuckles] You called me Maggie.

See, you know who I am.

I told you I wasn't Josette.

I'm Maggie Evans.

And I've got a special secret friend.

And she comes and plays with me.

And we have fun together.

We play, we sing,

and we talk about everything.

Oh, I can't wait until my friend comes again.

And she's going to come very soon.

[door creaking]

[lock clicking]

- I gotta get some food ready to take downstairs.

- I've just been down there visiting our guest.

- It's been a pretty rough deal for her.

- Impossible.

Hopeless.

- Why?

- I'm afraid Maggie Evans is going out of her mind.

- You sure?

- Well, she's begun to babble

and behave in a childlike way.

She talks about having a secret friend.

A friend who comes into the room and plays with her.

- Maybe that means it's working out.

Maybe if you wait long enough,

she'll come around and be Josette like you want.

- No, she's beyond hope of redemption.

I'm afraid Maggie Evans will never fit into my plans.

- What are you gonna do?

- The only other alternative--

dispose of her.

- You mean you're gonna let her go.

- You know what I mean.

- You're gonna k*ll her. - Well, I can't risk keeping her here.

- Well, isn't there something else you can do?

- There's no other way.

- But if you k*ll her, they might catch us.

- We stand that risk either way,

but k*lling her will be safest.

- Well, I don't see that.

- She'll be disposed of in a way

that no one will be able to trace.

In fact, there will be no trace.

- Please, Barnabas, don't do this.

She hasn't done anything to you.

She doesn't deserve this.

- If you have any mercy-- - Mercy?!

There was a time when I needed it.

A time that...

that I begged for it.

From those who could have so easily given it.

From those who could've understood and helped.

But they chose not to.

And now I chose not to.

- It's just that she doesn't deserve what you're gonna do.

- I'm the sole judge of who deserves what.

Now, I warn you, Willie,

if you give me the slightest interference,

your faith will be identical to hers.

Is that clear?

- Yes.

- She will be disposed of tomorrow.

- ♪ ...key and lock her up

[lock clicking]

[door creaking]

- Just some stuff I had up there.

- Good, I'm hungry.

- You're hungry, huh? - I'm starved.

- Listen to me,

I wish you'd knock off that secret friend business.

- Why, Willie? What's the matter?

- It's not doing you any good.

- Well, I like my secret friend.

And I'll play with her whenever I want to.

Whenever she comes to play with me.

- Look, whether you admit it or not,

I'm your friend.

So don't put on no act with me.

Now, listen, things are gonna get rough if we don't figure out something in a hurry.

I'm trying to help you.

I'm sticking my neck out for you.

So come on, you pay attention to me.

- Okay.

I'll pay attention. - Okay.

First, let's forget about you becoming Josette, okay?

- Okay.

It wasn't any fun.

- From now on, you've gotta be calm and straight.

You just be yourself.

Maggie Evans.

[laughing] That's easy.

I am Maggie Evans. - Yeah, I know,

but not the way you're doing right now,

because what you're doing now is beginning to worry me.

You brought my dinner and I'm eating everything

and I do anything that anybody tells me to do.

'Cause I've got a friend.

And she comes to visit me.

She comes right into this room and plays with me.

- What do you mean "she comes into this room"?

How does she get in here?

- Well, I don't know, but she gets here.

- Listen to me. You cut it out, you hear?

- You cut it out! - My arm!

- Now, you understand, the only thing

that's gonna save you is to be sane.

You understand?! You gotta be normal!

The way you were before you came in here!

- You better leave me alone!

- Now, you got no friend, you understand me?

You're alone in here, you're Maggie Evans,

and you got no friend!

- I have a friend.

It's my best friend.

And we-- we play and we sing.
