A moment ago, a gull circled the sky over Collinwood...
scanning the sea below for food
on which its survival depends.
Its eye briefly caught a flash of silver
in the morning sunlight.
It swooped to the sea only to be caught up
by a tidal wave and carried to a watery grave.
There is a moment before disaster strikes,
a quiet moment...
but there is terror in silence...
for the rush of destruction is to follow in its wake.
For one girl, this is such a moment
and her heart is numb with fear.
- Carolyn?
Carolyn?!
- What? - Didn't you hear me?
- I-- I guess not.
I was thinking.
- What's the matter?
- Did you see the paper this morning?
- No, not yet.
- Another girl was attacked last night.

- Another girl?
I thought that was over with.
- So did I.
Apparently it isn't.
Apparently... that madman is still around.
And while he's around, no one is safe.
- He's responsible for Maggie's death.
I know that.
- I have a feeling he isn't going to stop with Maggie.
- The police have got to catch him soon.
- What if they don't?
- But they will! They have to!
- I had a dream last night.
I dreamt I saw the maniac
who's been doing these things...
and I knew who his next victim was going to be.
- Who?
- Me.

- It was a terrible dream.
I-- I was in a dark and desolate place.
I knew there was someone near me...
but I couldn't see.
And then suddenly a hand reached out from the darkness
and grabbed me.
And I knew I couldn't get away.
I tried to scream but I couldn't.
That was the terrifying part of it.
I was too frightened to scream.
- Carolyn...
it's perfectly natural for you to have a dream like that
after hearing about Maggie.
- Poor Maggie.
- I know.
I haven't been able to think about anything else.
- Maybe we should try to stop thinking about it.
Maggie is gone.
There's nothing we can do for her.
- I thought I might go over and see Mr. Evans this morning
and see if there's anything I can do for him.
- I should go to Joe
and tell him how sorry I am
even though there's nothing I can do.
Joe's tried to be my friend and...
now I want to be his if I can.
- You know something, Carolyn,
this is the first time in weeks that we've
been able to talk without arguing.
- Well, I-- I don't feel very much like arguing.

and in spite of everything, we're still friends.

or my mother's marriage plans
or anything else we might argue about.

there-- there is one thing that I feel I should mention.

- Those are questions that you've got to
answer for yourself.

but Dr. Hoffman had her first session
with Maggie this morning.

- Yeah, I suppose so.
What else did he say?
Well, he reminded me how vitally important it is to keep
pretending that Maggie's dead.
- It isn't easy.
- Oh, you don't have to tell me that.
Vicki Winters was here this morning and I almost came
that close to telling her the truth.
- I know, I talked to Carolyn today
and felt like a fraud listening to her
tell me how sorry she was.
- Yes, yes, I know.
But, uh...
I don't know what we can do about it.
You know...
...I don't see what harm it would do to
perhaps tell either one of them.
Vicki especially.
She's trustworthy.
- We can't tell anyone, Sam.
If the news ever got out,
that maniac might get a hold of it and...
- No, you're right.
You're right, we can't trust anyone.
We've got to keep Maggie secret.
I know it's going to be hard...
but her life depends on it.
We can only hope that we can find the maniac
that did this to her...
