[Dr. Hoffman narrating] - There are secrets known
to one who is a shadow from the past.
There are those who seek this person
because her words would reveal
all that has happened to an innocent girl.
They seek her with great desperation because a danger,
horrible and indescribable,
lurks in the night.
[car approaching]
- Hey, it's Joe coming.
- Oh, good.
[door shuts]
- Hi! - Hi, Maggie.
- Well?
- Well, I spoke to the sheriff.
- Ah, and he didn't know anything, right?
- Unfortunately. He's checking around.
- He's always checking!
Always investigating, and he never comes up with anything.
What's the matter?
Now, I've seen her, you've seen her,
and other people have seen her.
Now, what's the matter? Why can't he find her?
It's a small town-- she's got to be around here somewhere.
- She is, Maggie, she is.
- [sighs] It's like she disappeared into thin air!

- Well, it does sound that way...
as if she could vanish at will.
- Well, it sounds that way, but it can't be.
Now, there's some explanation
to all of this, and we're gonna get to it.
Right now we're checking very methodically.
- Methodically? - Yeah, the sheriff's going over
some lists from the Board of Education.
Sarah is not a very popular name in this town.
There are only a few girls with that name,
and all of them are in the wrong age bracket.
They're either too old or too young to fit the description.
I've even gone to see a couple of them,
and they, uh, they don't resemble her at all.
- Yeah.
I'm not convinced that Sarah is her real name.
No, I think she made it up, like a game.
No... her name has got to be something else.
- You mean you think looking for a Sarah
is just a wild goose chase?
- Absolutely.
- Oh, boy. Where do we go from here?
- I don't know. I really don't know.
- But the one who has had the contact with her is David.
- Yeah, but even he doesn't know much about her.
I mean, he doesn't even know when he's going to meet her
or if he's going to meet her.
- Yes, but he does see her and he spends time with her.
- Oh, David's just a kid.
He's not very reliable.
You can't trust anything that he says.
- Pop, we've got to trust anybody who can help us,
anybody at all. - She's right, Sam, we have to.
- But, what can David do for us?
- Well, he might give us a lead.
He might say something that we might be able to match up
with some of the slim information we already have.
It's worth a try, isn't it, Sam?
- Oh, it's worth trying...
it's worth anything.
- Pop, why don't you go up and see him now?
- Well, I-- I don't want to leave you here.
- Oh, Vicki's coming over. She'll be here in a minute.
- Yeah, and besides, the Sheriff's men
are still guarding the house.
- Okay.
[kiss] Let's go.
- We'll be back as quickly as we can.
- Stay as long as you want, but...
Pop, please find Sarah.

- Carolyn!
Hey, Carolyn!
Come on!
- All right, David, you can stop calling me.
I'm coming right now.
- If you don't hurry, we'll miss the bus to Bangor!
- We won't miss the bus. There's still plenty of time.
And even if we do miss it, we can always go by car.
Which I would rather do.
- You promised we could go by bus!
I can go by car any time.
I want to go by bus because it's bumpy
and it takes all the back roads.
- [giggling] And takes twice as long to get there.
[knocking on door]
Oh, would you see who that is, please, David? - Sure.
- Well, hello, David.
- Hello, Mr. Evans. Hello, Joe.
- Hiya, Davey. - Can we come in?
- Sure.
- Hello, Carolyn.
- Hello Joe, Mr. Evans.
- Hello, Carolyn.
- What brings you up this way?
- Well, actually, we wondered if we could
talk to David for a couple of minutes.
- Sure. - Talk to me?
Why?
- Well, it's about something urgent.
Something very, very urgent.

- What is it that's so urgent?
- Well, it has to do with Maggie.
See, we're trying to trace that little girl.
- You mean Sarah.
- Mm-hmm, that's her.
Now, we wanted to ask you about her.
- She's a good kid.
- We'd like to talk to her, Davey.
- You would?
- Yes, and, uh, well,
since you're such a good friend of hers,
we thought, uh, well, maybe you'd introduce us to her.
- Well, sure, I'll do that sometime.
- Well... when would that be?
- Well, the next time I see her.
- Well, uh, when will you see her?
- I'm not really sure. - Uh-huh.
Well, uh, would you be seeing her, say, today?
- No, I don't think so,
because we're going to Bangor, and we're leaving right now.
- When do-- when do you think you could see her, Davey?
- Well, I don't know.
I mean, it's sort of up to her, whenever she wants to see me.
What do you want to see her about?
- Well, uh, she's a pretty smart kid, isn't she, David?
- Well, yes, she knows a lot of things.
- Right, and she knows about my daughter Maggie.
- I know, she told me.
- Oh? What did she tell you?
- She told me that Maggie was alive
when no one would believe it.
- That's right, and she told me exactly where to find her.
- Now that Maggie is home and safe,
what is you want to know?
- Well, we want to go a step further.
We want to try and find out
how Sarah knew and also what else she knew.
You see, we're trying to discover where Maggie was
and who it was that held her prisoner.
- David, do you think Sarah might know that?
- Well, maybe...
Well, she knows lots of things.
Secrets and things like that.
- That's right, Davey, and we're just wondering
if she'd tell us one of her secrets.
- Well, I don't know if she'd do that
because she can keep her secrets pretty well.
- Mm, David, do you think that Sarah is her real name?
- Oh, sure. I-I guess so.
- Well, we've been looking for her very hard,
and we haven't been able to find any little girl
in this town who looks like her.
- Boy! All of a sudden,
everybody is looking for Sarah.
[Joe] - Oh? What do you mean?
- Well, even Miss Hoffman has asked questions about her.
- Has she?
- Yes, she even asked me how she could find her.
[Sam] - Oh? Has she found her?
- I don't think so.
- Look, Davey, you think you could help us find her?
- Sure.
- Well, could you help us right now?
- Well, you see, we're going to Bangor.
I don't think I could.
- Well, it's, uh, very, very important.
- David, it is important.
Why don't we put off our trip to Bangor till tomorrow?
- But we've been planning it for two weeks!
- It means a lot to Mr. Evans.
And Joe and Maggie and all of us.
- I don't even know if I can find her.
I mean, she's never where you expect her to be.
She just pops up sometimes.
She's-- always comes when she wants to.
That's one of the bad things about playing with her,
you can't ever depend on her.
- [chuckling]
- Ah, he's right.
Well, she's just a child, you know.
Maybe we're expecting too much.
David, you go ahead.
You go on and take your trip.
But would you do us a favor?
- What is it?
- Could you tell us where we could find her?
We want to look for her.
- Well, yes.
I usually see her at those woods--
you know, near the old house?
- Mm-hmm. - She likes to play there.
You know, she acts as if it's her own.
- Ah, we could take-- - You know what I mean?
- Yeah, we could take a look around there, Sam.
We probably won't find her, but there's always a chance.
- I'm sorry David wasn't more helpful.
- No, he's been a big help.
Now, there's no sense in ruining his day.
But, listen, Davey, if you do see Sarah,
could you tell her that we would like to talk to her?
- Oh, I'll tell her that,
but I don't think it'll do you any good.
- Okay. Well, come on, Sam.
Let's take a look around that old house.
- I hope you find her.
- So do I. Thank you.
- Mm, good-bye.
[door shuts]
- David, I'm ashamed of you.
- What for? - For not helping them!
- I helped them.
Carolyn, it's just that I know Sarah,
and I don't think she'll help them.
You know, I don't even think she'll talk to them.
Well, come on, before we miss the bus to Bangor.

[birds chirping, wind whipping]
- Well... nothing.
I'm afraid this is a waste of time!
- I know, Sam, but what can we do?
We've got to try.
[high-pitched squeaking]

- I don't know.
[squeaking continues]
It's coming from over there.
Come on.

- Sam, look!
- I... she was here.

- Any luck?
- No, just like you, not a trace.
- Well, she must be around here somewhere.
She couldn't have moved off that fast.
Probably hiding.
- You know, maybe we frightened her, coming up the way we did.
- Oh, I don't know.
She's-- she's hiding from us. I know it.
- But, why, Sam?
She knows you. She's been to your house.
She's talked to you. You have done a sketch of her.
Why should she be afraid of you?
- I have no idea.
- You know, maybe we're jumping the g*n on this.
- What do you mean?
- Well, listen, how do we know that it was Sarah
that was using that swing?
- Well, who else would be playing here?
- Yeah, I don't know, it's not likely
that any other kids would be, but...
but still, just because that swing was moving back and forth
doesn't mean that Sarah was in it.
- Well, who could it have been then?
- I don't know. It could have been the wood--
wind for all I know. - Yeah.
- I just don't think ought to jump to conclusions.
- Well, that's-- we can't do anything else.
We haven't got any facts.
I think we might as well forget the whole thing.
We're not going to know anything.
Let's go on home. - Wait a second, Sam.
Look, we're pretty close to the old house.
Why don't we go over and have a talk with Barnabas Collins?
Maybe he's seen her.
Maybe he knows something.
- Okay. Why not?
It's over this way.
[squeaking]
[knocking]
- Well, you think he's home?
I hear he's never around in the daytime.
- Well, maybe Willie is, then.
- [sighs] What are we going to tell Maggie when we get back?
- Oh, I don't know. We'll tell her--
tell her we made some progress.
- What progress?
- Heh... I'll think of something.
- Well, you don't think you're going to double-talk her
into believing you're coming up with something?
- No, I know I'm not.

- Well, might as well wrap it up for the day.
- Oh... Dr. Hoffman.
- Mr. Evans, Mr. Haskell, what are you doing here?
- Well, we were looking for Barnabas Collins.
- Oh, he's not here.
- Well, is Willie Loomis here then?
- No, they've both gone out.
- Oh... a little surprised to see you here, Doctor.
- Why should you be?
- Well, I was just wondering what you'd be doing here.
- Mr. Collins has offered me the use of his excellent library
and I'm simply taking advantage of it.
- Aha, and have you been able to come up with anything?
- Oh, it helps me maintain my disguise as an historian.
- Oh, I'm glad you've been able to keep your disguises.
I was just wondering if, uh,
it was going to be of much help to my daughter, Maggie.
- Sam...
Oh, Mr. Evans... your daughter's mystery is a vast,
complex puzzle full of many, many small pieces.
These pieces must be collected in any way possible,
however unorthodox it might seem.
- I understand that, but I was just wondering
how long it was going to keep going on?
- Oh, until the puzzle is complete.
Until we know the whole story.
- Well, uh...
Honestly doctor, I, um...
I don't think that you're going to find all these little pieces.
Now, just don't get me wrong,
but I appreciate the time that you're spending
and I know that it's without any remuneration,
but I just think it's all hopeless.
- Well, it may be, but we will never know
until we've tried everything.
- I wonder, Doctor...
for all of this effort that you have been putting in,
you, uh, you must know something.
You must have some lead.
- I really wish I did.
- You know something, Doctor?
I've just decided that I don't believe you.

- I really should be angry and insulted,
but I'm curious as to why you don't believe me.
- Because you've been spending all your time
in one particular area.
You seem to go back and forth
between Collinwood and this house.
And I guess you must think there's, uh, some connection.
Is that a possibility?
- Oh, anything's is possible.
But I don't believe in generalities
and I have nothing concrete to tell you.
- I expected that you would answer something like that.
- Oh, come on now, Sam.
- Oh, we're all going to end up knowing nothing at all.
We're all looking for the same lead.
- The same lead?
- Why, everybody's looking for this child,
this-- this Sarah.
I hear you've been looking for her, too.
- Not really looking for her,
rather just asking some pointless questions.
And the answers were equally meaningless.
David doesn't know anything about it.
- Yes, that's what we just found out.
Listen, Doctor, do you really think there's
any significance to this girl?
Is she-- is she really a key piece in this puzzle
that we're trying to put together?
- I don't know.
The problem is to find her, isn't it?
Why did you want to see Mr. Collins?
- Well, to find out if he knew anything about her.
- Oh. Well, I can save you some time.
I've already spoken to him,
and he knows nothing.
- Mr. Collins knows nothing.
You know nothing. You know something, Doctor?
You missed your calling.
Yeah, you should have been a member of the diplomatic corps
'cause you're a master of the evasive answer!
- Hey, Sam!
Look, I'm sorry, Doctor.
He's-- he's upset, and I'm sure he didn't mean that.
- I understand.
But I'd like you to know that...
I'm doing everything I can.
- I'm sure you are, Doctor.
Good-bye. - Good-bye.
- I'm doing everything I can.

- Boy, am I hungry!
- How is that possible?
You had two hot dogs at the bus terminal in Bangor
and all that candy on the bus coming home.
- Well... I can't help it.

- Not too soon.
- Back so soon?
- So soon? I thought we'd never get home.
- Did you have a nice time?
- Great! Look at all the things we got.
Before I open them,
I'm going to go have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
- [chuckling] - Oh...
That boy has an insatiable appetite.
You wouldn't believe the amount of food he consumed today.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, candy, cake...
- [chuckling] Sounds like a well-balanced diet.
- Are you going out, Miss Hoffman?
- Yes, for a little while. Why?
- I wonder if I might ask you something.
- Of course.
- What's your interest in that little girl
everyone's looking for?
If you don't mind my curiosity.
- Well, you use the proper word.
Curiosity.
Everybody has been talking so much about this little Sarah
that I'm just curious.
- And you really have no other interest in her?
- What other interest could I possibly have?
- [chuckling] Well, it's just that you seem to be
first in asking questions,
rather than the people who are directly involved.
- Perhaps because I was-- I was able to conclude more rapidly
that David was the natural person to talk to
because he had had more contact with her than anyone.
Oh, perhaps it's just my natural
and professional inquisitiveness.
- Perhaps.
- Are there any other questions you'd like to ask?
- No, not at the moment.
- Well, please feel free to ask.
- I will.
I definitely will.
- Good night.
- Oh, she must be asleep.
- Let's try not to wake her up.
- Oh... I'll, uh, I'll go take a check on her.
Maggie?
Maggie? - Pop?
