Young David Collins has learned part of the secret
behind the evil at Collinwood
and now he lives in a state of constant fear.

I've been looking everywhere for you.

What were you doing in the mausoleum, David?
Is there something in there that fascinates you?
I think you're keeping something from me.
Do you know what happens to little boys
who lie to their elders?
Come, David, you'll go to my house
and you can tell me about your little friend Sarah.
Didn't she have a little secret
she wanted to share with you,
a secret in the mausoleum?
Very well, we'll go to my house
and see if your memory doesn't become
a little clearer there.

[David] - Cousin Barnabas could tell I was lying.
He could see I knew about
the secret room in the mausoleum.
Sarah said no one else knew about it except for us...
but Barnabas knows.

And why doesn't he want anyone else to know about it?
What's the secret about that room?

He seemed absolutely terrified
and he was talking to it.

- Well, he seems to be the object of David's fear.
I don't know why but I thought Barnabas might.
- Well, I think he'll be just as puzzled as you and I are.
[sighing] - You're probably right.
Something has to be done with that child.
He can't go on like this. He needs help!
- Do you think Doctor Woodard should examine him?
- Physically, he's just as healthy as he's ever been.
- Well, if he's not willing to talk to either of us,
I don't see how we can possibly help him.
- There must be somebody he's willing to talk to.
- Well, there's Burke.
He's always found it easier to talk to him
than to us.
- Could you get Burke up here tonight?
- He's gone out of town until tomorrow
but I can get him up here then.
- Good.

the house he wants to buy.

he might find it very difficult to adjust to a new governess.

What disturbs me most is that

- Has there been any further word about Willie?
- The last I heard he was still in a coma.
- If the newspapers decide to sensationalize the story--
- I don't care about that, Barnabas,
and I don't think you should either.

I think it's the greatest single shock of my life.
- You mustn't be so harsh on yourself.
You had no way of knowing what was in Willie's mind.

- Actually I want to talk to you about
an entirely different matter.
- Oh? - Yes, about David.
I'm extremely worried about him.
- Why? What's happened to him?
- Let's say something is happening to him
and none of us know what it is.
- I don't understand.
- Well, the other night, when you found him
outside the mausoleum, did something happen?
Something that he hasn't told us about?
- Why, no. Of course not.
I found him and brought him home
and that's all there was to it.
Oh, he was a little frightened of course.
- His being frightened then is understandable
but he's more afraid than ever now.
- Is he?
- Yes.
He's terrified day and night.
And he refuses to tell any of us why.
- He won't even admit that he is frightened.
- Well, have you any idea
of what the cause of this fear in him is?
- Barnabas, I...
I don't know how to tell you this,
and I fail to see the reason why,
but he seems to be afraid of you.
- Of me?
Oh, but why?
[Elizabeth] - I have no idea.
- Well, do you think I do?

I mean, that is nothing intentionally.

- The only time I've ever seen David this terrified
was when his mother tried to take him away from here.
- Well, I don't mean to minimize the situation,
but it is possible that David's fear
could be an imaginary one.
- Oh, the reason could be imaginary.
But I assure you the fear is quite real.
- And it gets worse every day.
- Well, is there anything I can do to help?
- I don't know what you could do.
- Well, since the reason for his fear
seems to have something to do with me, I--
perhaps I should talk to him.
- Mrs. Stoddard and I have both tried to talk to him
but it doesn't seem to help.
- Well, I think what is required here
is a good man-to-man talk.

- I'm in favor of anything that will help.

I will be very angry if I find out what it is.
