NARRATOR: The atmosphere at Collinwood

is charged with tension.

Still missing is a girl,

abducted by a strange, terrifying man.

Earlier this night, the man was caught and jailed.

Now it's been learned that he has broken out of jail

and is at large somewhere on the Collins Estate.

[INTENSE MUSIC] ♪♪

It's a piece of clothing.

You think it's his?

The chances are it is.

We know he was headed this way.

Yeah, yeah, I think we're on the right track.

- What do mean, Sheriff? - Look up there.

That's the old Collins house.

Every time anything goes wrong around here,

that's where all roads seem to lead.

[SOUND OF CHAINS JINGLING]

[SPOOKY MUSIC] ♪♪

[ERRIE THEME MUSIC] ♪♪

BARNABAS: Adam, Adam, what's happening to you now?

They've hunted you down

and penned you in like an animal.

I cannot help you.

SHERIFF: Keep your eyes open.

This is where we picked him up last time.

DEPUTY: All right Sheriff.

Coleman, you better get Anderson,

tell him to have his men surround this building.

Crawford, you can stay here outside the door.

[KNOCKING]

[TENSE MUSIC] ♪♪

Why, Sheriff Patterson, come in.

I didn't expect to see you again tonight.

You didn't, Mr. Collins?

No, has something happened?

Don't you know?

Well no, of course not.

I think you should know the answer to that.

I, I came here shortly after you found the man you wanted

and I've been here ever since.

Why didn't you go back out and rejoin the search party

and help look for Carolyn?

Well, you, you've found the man who abducted her.

I assumed that you had a confession from him by now

and that Carolyn was safe.

SHERIFF: We had the man who abducted her.

He escaped over an hour ago.

He seemed to find it rather simple.

He merely pulled the chain out of the wall,

bent the bars on his cell window and escaped.

BARNABAS: He did all that?

Yes, he also mauled one of my deputies.

The man may have a broken neck.

BARNABAS: Well I'm terribly sorry to hear that.

But tell me Sheriff, why are you here now?

SHERIFF: Because this is where we picked him up the first time.

Then he should know that...

that it would be foolish to come back here now,

shouldn't he?

Yes, I imagine an ordinary man might figure it out that way,

but then we're not dealing with an ordinary man,

are we?

BARNABAS: I don't know what you mean.

Mr. Collins, we have reason to believe that man

was headed in this direction.

And, you think he came here?

Did he?

Well, if he had, I would have told you.

How much do you know about this man?

I know nothing about him.

SHERIFF: You ever seen him?

Only once, when my cousin Roger shot at him.

And you have no idea who he is?

None.

What about your servant, Willie Loomis?

SHERIFF: I questioned him earlier.

I didn't believe one word he had to say.

I had the feeling he was concealing something.

Well, I'm sure Willie has nothing to conceal.

Why was he so nervous when I questioned him?

Willie told me he had a very alarming dream last night

and he's been upset about it all day.

He was upset before he had any dream, Mr. Collins.

What do you mean?

Mrs. Stoddard told me she questioned him yesterday.

He was very nervous then.

Especially after he blurted out the man's name.

The man's name?

SHERIFF: Yes.

Mrs. Stoddard said he called him "Adam".

Well, that's news to me.

Mrs. Stoddard also told me

that when she met him in the woods,

he said just one thing to her, your name.

Now, Mr. Collins,

if you never had any dealings with this man,

how does he come to know your name?

Well, I have no idea.

Forgive me, Sheriff,

but instead of standing here talking about the man you want,

I think we should be out looking for him, don't you?

SHERIFF: I have two dozen men out looking for him.

They're going to keep at it until they find him

and you and I are going to keep at these questions

'til I get some satisfactory answers.

But I've told you everything I know.

Maybe you have,

if that's true, somebody else is lying.

There must be some reason why Willie Loomis

knows that man's name.

There must be some reason why he knows your name

and why he showed up at your house.

Sit down, Mr. Collins,

you might as well prepare yourself for an ordeal

because I'm not leaving here 'til I get the answers I want.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC] ♪♪

CAROLYN: It's no use.

Whatever he's put outside the door is too heavy.

I'll never be able to budge it.

If he doesn't come back I'll die in here.

Unless I can find some other way out.

But there isn't another way, only the door.

[SOUND OF JINGLING CHAINS]

[SCREAMS AND CRIES]

And there's still another thing

that doesn't make any sense, Mr. Collins.

And what is that?

This man, this "Adam" as your servant calls him,

when you and Roger met him in the woods,

Roger shot at him, right?

That's correct.

And then later you both stated

that Roger hit him in the shoulder.

BARNABAS: Yes.

So the last time you saw him, just a few days ago,

he was running into the woods,

with a b*llet wound in his shoulder.

That's right.

And yet, just earlier this evening,

when we captured him,

it took six of my deputies to subdue him.

Yes, you mentioned that before.

Now, Mr. Collins,

no man alive has that kind of recuperative powers.

This man obviously had help from an expert

attending his wound.

We've checked every physician in this area

and no licensed physician in this area treated that wound.

What are you driving at, Sheriff?

There's just one doctor that we haven't checked,

because she doesn't officially practice in this area,

and that's Julia Hoffman.

Now surely you don't think that Dr. Hoffman

helped this man in any way?

What I think Mr. Collins, is this whole affair

smells to high heaven.

As far as I'm concerned, no one is above suspicion,

including you.

Sheriff, the man you're looking for

is probably some kind of vagrant.

Now what connection could I have with him?

I haven't the vaguest idea, Mr. Collins.

In this case, I only know what I feel

and I feel that you're not telling me everything

you know about this man.

Well, I'm not going to let up on you until you do.

Sheriff, you're making a great deal out of nothing.

This man has kidnapped anmember of your own family,

we don't even know whether he might have

k*lled her by this time.

I'm sure Carolyn is quite safe.

SHERIFF: On what do you base that opinion?

that the man did come to this house several days ago,

looking for food.

Willie felt sorry for him and gave it to him.

BARNABAS: He said that he couldn't speak at all.

It seemed that he didn't understand much

of what Willie said.

Apparently, Willie mentioned my name several times.

That must be the reason that he picked it up.

SHERIFF: Just what did Willie say

that reassured you that Carolyn is still alive?

Willie didn't seem to think that the man was dangerous.

In fact, he seemed rather gentle.

Willie's a fine judge of character, isn't he?

This "gentle man" has so far kidnapped a woman,

broken up a jail cell,

and broken the neck of one of my deputies.

What else did Willie tell you?

That was all.

Why didn't you come to me with this in the beginning?

Well, I was afraid that you might think more of it,

that somehow I was involved with him.

I'm still not convinced that you're not, Mr. Collins.

[KNOCKING AT THE DOOR]

We spotted him, Sheriff.

He had the girl hidden in a root cellar at the old Taylor farm.

Did the dogs pick up the trail?

- Yeah, and they're headed for Widow's Hill. - Widow's Hill?

SHERIFF: All right, you get the whole search party,

have them surround that whole area.

If we can isolate him there, we'll have him trapped.

Go on, get moving.

Well, Mr. Collins, shall we go?

- You want me to go with you? - Yes.

But certainly there are enough men out there already.

I don't need your help, Mr. Collins.

I want you there when he's caught.

I want to see whether he recognizes you.

[TENSE MUSIC] ♪♪

[DRAMATIC MUSIC] ♪♪

[CRYING]

The police are getting closer.

They have you trapped.

The only place you can go is back into the woods

and that's where they are.

- Tell your men to do nothing or she'll fall. - I can see that.

Don't move a muscle until I say to.

CAROLYN: Pull me up!

Please, help me back up.

No, don't sh**t him! He saved my life.

[FALLING YELL]

No!

[SCREAMS AND CRIES]

DR. LANG: Julia,

when, when, when you do the experiment again,

if both Barnabas and my creation live,

if they both live,

Barnabas will be free and healthy.

As long as Adam lives,

Adam will drain Barnabas' affliction from him

but will not suffer from the disease itself

because he lives but if Adam dies,

Barnabas Collins will be as he was before.
