and I heard about Miss Winters' disappearance,

and the first thought that crossed my mind was Adam

might be responsible.

- Yes, I thought the same thing.

- Well, we can both relax.

- After speaking with Adam, I'm convinced

he knows nothing about Miss Winters.

[thunderclap]

- Nicholas, are you really that convinced?

- Absolutely!

I don't know why Miss Winters disappeared,

but Adam had nothing to do with it.

and I'd like to believe he didn't have anything

to do with Vicki's disappearance, but--

And Barnabas says that Adam is responsible for Vicki's

disappearance.

- Why would Adam want to kidnap Vicki?

What motive would he have?

- I don't know!

- And why would he want to go to the old house?

Why-- why would he want to see Barnabas?

- Barnabas wouldn't tell me why Adam went there

or what he wanted.

- Well, it seems to me that there

are a great many unanswered questions to this.

- Yes, there are.

- You know what I think?

- I think Barnabas Collins is a very clever man.

- In what way?

- Now, isn't it possible that he's

using Miss Winters' disappearance as a way

of finding out where Adam is?

- I-- I-- I don't follow.

- I mean, it's certainly possible he concocted

this whole story about a visit from Adam to frighten you

into thinking that Adam had something

to do with Vicki's disappearance;

to frighten you into telling him where Adam is.

- Yes, I suppose that's possible,

but why is Barnabas so anxious to find Adam?

- Well, to turn him over to the authorities, obviously.

A thing that you and I do not want to have happen.

- No. No, of course not.

- Hello, Jeff.

- Have there been any phone calls?

- No, the phone hasn't rung once.

Haven't the police found any sign of Vicki?

- No, not a trace.

- I'm so frightened for her.

- Oh, you think you're scared.

Every time I go around a tree in the woods,

I think I'm going to find her lying behind it,

just like that man I found who was attacked.

- How is he?

- They managed to get him to the hospital in time

to give him a transfusion, but he's barely alive.

- Have they identified him?

His name is Jennings. Tom Jennings.

He's-- he's a local handyman who did some work for us once.

He's very nice.

- Well, according to the police,

he hasn't got an enemy in the world,

which makes his being attacked even more mysterious and--

and frightening.

- Jeff, is the sheriff still outside?

- Yes.

They're organizing search parties.

- I think I'd better go and speak to him.

I know the grounds better than anyone else.

I may know places they won't think of searching.

[door opens and closes]
