[eerie music]
- Evening settles over Collinwood,
after a day of fear for the residents of the great house.
For on the previous night, a woman died mysteriously,
and the mystery surrounding her death
still troubles those who knew her.
On this night, another event will take place, an event
just as mysterious, one which will
change the destiny of Victoria Winters forever.
[clock chimes]
- Roger? - Yes.
- Did you see the sheriff?
- Yes.
- What did the coroner's report say?
- Madam Findley died of natural causes.
She had a heart attack.
- I don't think it's that simple as that.
- Well, Liz, people do have heart attacks.
- Yes, but Madam Findley looked like a very healthy woman.
- Well, sometimes appearances are deceiving.
- What would cause a heart attack?
Did she see something?
Did she see something that frightened her so--
- Now, Liz, don't start imagining things.
The woman died of natural causes.
It's terrible, I know, but there's
nothing mysterious about it.
- I wish I could believe that.
- Well, you have to.
- Roger, you should've seen it.
It was awful.
Her falling from the landing to the floor and lying so still.
- Oh, it must have been terrible for you, dear.
But it's something that you're just
going to have to wipe out of your mind.
- Mrs. Stoddard?
- Vicky.
Are you all right?
- Yes.
Could someone else stay with the children tonight?
- Well, of course.
I'll have Mrs. Johnson look after them.
- Thank you.
- Are you, uh, going somewhere, Vicky?
- No, but I have to stay in my room.
- What for?
- I'm going to see him tonight.
- Who?
- Jeff, my husband.
- Vicky, Jeff is gone.
- He's going to return to me tonight.
I know it.
I know it.
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
- Vicky, dear.
- Oh, don't tell me I'll never see him again.
I refuse to believe that.
- Vicky, why do you think you're going to see him tonight?
- I fell asleep this afternoon.
I had a dream.
- A dream?
- He was there.
He spoke to me.
He said that he would come for me.
- Vicky, do you think you're being entirely rational?
- Oh, don't tell me it was only a dream.
It has to be more than that.
It has to mean that I'll see him again.
- Vicky.
Sometimes one has to be realistic,
no matter how painful it may be.
- Don't tell me I'll never see him again.
I couldn't go on living if I believed that.
- Vicky!
- It has to happen.
It has to happen!
- Liz, don't go after her. - Oh, I should.
- What more can you say to her that you haven't said before?
- I don't know but something must be done.
[sighs]
- Well, what?
Every time we try to help her, she seems to get more upset.
She persists in having this fantasy that-- that he's
going to return.
- I know.
Poor child.
- Now, she can't go on this way forever.
She's got to stop this grieving sometime.
- I wonder if she ever will.
- Well, she has to!
- I believe she's going to go on grieving
for him until the day she dies.
And there's nothing we can do to help.
- Barnabas hasn't seen her, has he?
- Not since the day she was married.
- Perhaps he should talk to her.
They've always been so close.
He might be able to give her the comfort
that we don't seem to be able to.
- I doubt that even Barnabas can help now,
but it's worth trying.
- Oh, I wish I didn't have to leave you like this.
I wish I could postpone the trip an extra day.
- I know you have to go.
- I'll go to the old house and get Barnabas.
- All right.
[dramatic music]
[door shuts]
- Please, Jeff.
The watch must tick.
I must know that you're close to me.
Oh, please.
Let me know that you're here.
Give me a sign!
I'll close my eyes, and when I open them, you'll be here,
and the watch will tick.
Oh, it has to happen!
It has to happen!
It has to happen!
[sobbing]
[watch ticking]
[suspenseful music]
[laughs]
You're here!
Here in this room!
Jeff.
Jeff, I know that you're here.
I know that you're very close to me now.
Please, come to me.
Come to me!
[eerie music]
Jeff!
- Hello, Elizabeth. - Would you excuse me, Barnabas?
I have to leave shortly.
I'd better get to my luggage.
- Of course.
- Did Roger tell you about Vicky?
- Yes.
I suppose I should have come here sooner.
- This must have been difficult for you.
- She was married so quickly, it came as such a shock.
- I know how you feel.
- I realize that my feelings for Vicky are no secret to anyone.
- Vicky cares to you, too. - Does she?
- Well, of course.
You know that.
- Perhaps she doesn't care for in the same why
she cared for Jeff Clark, but she's very fond of you.
- Yes.
- She's a very disturbed girl, Barnabas.
She needs help and we don't seem to be able to provide it.
- Well, naturally I'll do everything I can to help.
- I knew you'd say that.
- Where is she now? - She's in her room.
I'll tell her you're here.
- You're here, Jeff.
Please, please come to me.
I know you're trying to reach me.
Please.
Please, let the power of love bring you back to me.
Oh, I love you, Jeff!
I love you!
Hear me!
Hear me!
- Vicky.
Vicky.
[laughs]
[eerie music]
- Jeff!
Jeff! - Vicky.
- You must come back.
You must appear to me.
You must appear to me.
- Your love brought me back.
- You must.
You must!
- I can never return.
- No!
No!
- I can never return.
- Oh, I can't believe that.
I won't believe it!
[knocking at door]
Don't leave me!
Don't leave me.
Oh, no!
No, no!
- Vicky.
[sobs]
Vicky.
- He was here, Mrs. Stoddard.
Jeff.
- What?
- I heard his voice.
He told me that he'd never return to me.
He said he'd never return.
- Oh, Vicky, darling.
- Oh, I've lost him forever.
What am I gonna do?
What am I going to do?
- You're going to stay here and we're
going to take care of you.
- No.
No, I can't do that.
- What do you mean?
- I-- I can't stay here. I have to leave.
- Leave?
- Yes.
I have to leave Collinwood.
I have to go someplace else.
- Oh, Vicky, you're part of the family.
What will we do without you?
- Oh, I love you all, Mrs. Stoddard.
You're all the family I've ever had.
But this house holds too many memories,
memories I can't live with.
- Well, if you left, where would you go?
- I don't know.
I haven't thought about it.
- You haven't given any thought to a lot of things.
I think we better have this discussion later,
when you're calm.
- All right.
We'll talk later.
- Barnabas is waiting outside.
Would you like to see him?
- Oh yes, I would.
- Well, I'll send him in.
- Hello, Vicky.
- Hello, Barnabas.
I'm so glad to see you.
- Are you?
- Yes.
If you hadn't come to me, I--
I would have gone to you.
To say goodbye.
- Goodbye?
- Yes.
I just told Mrs. Stoddard that I'm--
I'm going to leave Collinwood.
- But why?
- Oh, I fell in love, I married the man I love,
and then I lost him.
Forever.
If I stayed here, the memories would be unbearable.
Surely you can understand that?
- Yes, I suppose I can.
- So I have to go away.
Where I don't know, but I have to go.
- I think you're making a mistake, Vicky, deserting
the people who love you.
- Oh, I'm not deserting any of you, Barnabas.
You mustn't think of it that way.
- You know how much I care for you.
- Yes.
- Then let me take you away, let me take care of you.
Oh, I know it's too early to ask but, Vicky,
I want you to be my wife.
Oh, please don't speak.
Let me do the talking.
- All right.
- I know you don't feel for me what you feel for Jeff Clark,
but I do believe you have some feeling for me.
- Of course, I do.
Then there's a possibility that--
that in time, that feeling might grow,
that I might be able to make you happy.
Vicky, I'd try, I'd do anything in the world to make you happy.
- I know you would.
- Then consider going away with me as my wife.
- Oh, Barnabas.
You're the kindest, most considerate man I know.
And I feel very close to you.
I always will.
- But, please, be sure before you say no.
- I'm very honored that you want me to be your wife.
I only wish I didn't have to say no.
- Must you?
- Yes. - Why?
Be-- because you could never learn to love me?
- No.
No, in many ways I feel something like love for you.
If I hadn't met Jeff...
- But Jeff Clark is gone, Vicky.
- But he isn't.
That's just it.
- You think that he can come back to you?
- No.
I know now that he'll never return to me.
- Well, then what do you mean?
- I mean that I'll never stop loving him.
I always will.
My love for him will always exist in me,
and so a part of him will always exist, too.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
- I understand you're telling me that you won't marry me.
- I'm sorry, Barnabas.
But I'll never stop loving the man I did marry.
I have one husband.
I can never have another.
- I see.
- Oh, I wish I didn't have to hurt you.
- Oh, don't apologize, Vicky.
Apologies are always more painful than anything else.
I asked you a question and you answered it.
Let's leave it at that.
- All right, Barnabas.
- When are you leaving Collinwood, Vicky?
- I don't know.
As soon as possible.
I think it would be best if-- to leave here as soon as possible.
- Then perhaps this should be our final farewell.
- If that's the way you want it.
- I think it would be easier that way.
- Whatever you say.
- Goodbye, Vicky.
- Goodbye, Barnabas.
Barnabas!
Wherever I go, whatever happens to me, I'll never forget you.
- I'll never forget you.
- Oh, Jeff.
Jeff!
Why couldn't you return?
Why do I have to spend the rest of my life without you?
[sobs]
[dramatic music]
Jeff!
Oh, Jeff!
You returned!
- Yes, Vicky, yes.
Your love brought me back. - You're here.
- Oh, I want to touch you.
Oh, I thought I never would.
- Oh, I can't believe it.
I thought I'd lost you forever.
- Listen to me, Vicky, and listen carefully.
I didn't choose to come back.
- What?
- Your love brought me back, but you have to forget me.
- Forget you?
- Yes.
Yes.
You have to forget me because it's impossible for us
to be together because of what I am.
- What are you saying?
- Vicky, I am Peter Bradford, I always was.
- The man I married..
- You married me.
You married me, but there was a man named Jeff Clark.
And my spirit was allowed to--
to exist inside his body for a while.
But only for a while.
And then I had to return.
I had to go back to my time.
- But you're--
- And I'll always have to go back.
- But you-- you're here, and you're real!
- Only for a few minutes.
- No.
No!
- When that clock strikes eight, I'm going back.
- No, Peter!
Peter, no!
- Oh, Vicky, centuries separate us.
That's why you'll have to forget me.
- Oh, I'll never forget you.
I'll never stop loving you.
Take me back with you.
Back into time.
- You know I can't.
I can't.
You have to understand, I can't take you with me.
It's too dangerous.
But-- but you're my world, you're my whole world.
Nothing else matters to me--
- No, Vicky, this is your world here.
You belong here in this world.
- But I'll never be happy, not without you.
Oh please, Peter, take me!
Take me with you.
- Well, there's my taxi.
Barnabas, would you do me a favor while I'm gone?
- What's that?
- Liz has so much to contend with.
I wonder if you'd try helping out, if you can.
- Of course.
- Thank you.
Well, I have to leave now.
- Goodbye.
- Goodbye.
- Are you leaving now, Roger?
- Yes, dear, my taxi is waiting.
I'll phone you from London.
- Please do that, and have a good flight.
- I will.
And you take care of yourself. - I will.
Bye-bye. - Goodbye, dear.
- Barnabas.
- What are you doing here? - What do you mean?
- Well, I just passed Vicky's door
and I heard her talking to a man and naturally I
assumed it was you.
- Elizabeth.
[dramatic music]
- Vicky.
You may feel lost in another century.
- Not if I'm with you. - Are you sure?
- Yes, very sure.
- The clock is going to strike.
- Vicky! Vicky!
- Take my hand.
- They'll try to stop me.
What should I do, Peter?
- Take my hand. - Vicky, open the door.
- All right. - Now, hold tight.
- I will. - I love you, Vicky.
- I love you, Peter.
[clock chimes] - Peter!
Vicky...
