[Julia narrating] - The great halls of Collinwood are clothed in darkness,

a darkness sinister and impenetrable,

but not as impenetrable as the secrets of the great estate,

for Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard, the mistress of Collinwood,

has been placed under a curse,

and because of it, has been buried alive.

At this moment, she realizes her daughter is in danger,

but she is trapped in her tomb,

consigned to the land of the living dead.

[Elizabeth] - Carolyn.

Carolyn!

I must find a way to reach you.

Carolyn, you're in terrible danger.

- I thought I heard --

No, it's not possible.

[Elizabeth] - Carolyn, I know something is happening.

Get back to Collinwood.

Get inside the house, Carolyn!

[eerie music] ♪♪

- Carolyn, I was - I was just - - Yes, Julia?

- coming out to look for you.

- What for?

- Well, you've been gone so long.

I was worried about you.

- I went to look for Chris, but he wasn't in his cottage.

Julia, I'm terribly afraid something had happened to him.

- Why?

The cottage is a mess,

chairs overturned, glass broken.

What do you suppose it could mean?

- Well, I'm sure he's all right.

- Where did he go?

- Well, I don't know, but I wouldn't worry about Chris.

He can take care of himself.

- When I was crossing the woods, something very strange happened.

- I heard a voice calling to me.

- I heard my mother's voice calling my name.

I heard it calling me over and over again.

- That's not possible. - It was her voice.

I heard my mother's voice, Julia, calling me.

- Carolyn, your mother is dead.

The only voice you heard was in your own mind.

- Maybe.

- Where are you going?

- Out to my mother's mausoleum.

- Carolyn, that's nonsense.

You can go there in the morning.

You shouldn't go through the woods alone at night.

- I'll be all right.

- Well, then, at least let me get Barnabas.

He's in the study, he can go with you.

- There's no need for that, Julia.

that - that kept the animal from k*lling me.

I can't imagine what.

Something about it seemed to fascinate or - or frighten him.

- Let me see the bracelet.

It's silver.

- Yes.

Why?

- The head of this cane is silver, too.

- Barnabas, what are you - what are you getting at?

- I'm not certain.

- Julia, the bells in my mother's mausoleum,

why did they go off?

- I don't know.

It was probably some freak accident.

- Accident?

- Yes, or perhaps it was the - it was the scuffling.

- I keep thinking about what my mother said

that if a bell should go off,

it would be a signal that she would still be alive.

- You saw her, Carolyn, and she was dead.

- Yes. I know.

[door opening]

- Who could that be at this time of night?

- [gasps]

- Carolyn. - Mother.

Mother, you're alive! You're alive!

- Carolyn.

- I never believed in miracles before,

but I do now.

- Well, it's - it's weak,

but it's - it's a definite pulse beat

and - and there was none before.

- You thought I was dead, but I wasn't.

- I took every precaution.

You had no heartbeat.

Your pulse had stopped.

You were dead.

- I know how it happened.

I remember now.

It was Cassandra, Roger's wife.

- What?

- She has some kind of special powers.

She put me under a spell.

- A spell?

- One night, I - I found her on the terrace,

yes, I can remember.

She was with a young man, Tony Peterson.

They were embracing.

I was very angry.

I threatened to tell Roger.

- And then what?

- She made me look into her eyes,

deep into her eyes

and she told me what would happen.

You would think me dead and you would bury me alive.

And it did happen.

All I can remember was darkness,

total darkness.

Until tonight.

- What happened tonight?

- I awoke.

I sensed that Carolyn was in danger,

that I had to help her.

- I was in danger, but I'm not any longer.

Never mind that now, Mother.

What matter is that you're here and you're alive.

You're alive.

- I'm afraid of Cassandra.

Do you suppose she'll ever return?

- No, Elizabeth.

She will never return again.

- She might.

Roger would take her back. He'll never believe my story.

- We believe you.

I can assure you, you will never see Cassandra again.

- How can you be so sure?

- I just am. - So am I.

- Once in the darkness, I saw her.

I had a vision.

- What kind of vision?

- A vision of some woman,

a woman who looked like Cassandra,

she was surrounded by fire, flames.

She was consumed in flames.

I heard her screams and then, she was gone.

- I - I think I better take you upstairs now.

- I'll do that, Julia.

- No. I want to take her to her room.

I would like to examine her and then,

you can come up later.

- All right.

- This house, I never thought I'd see it again.

I never thought I'd see any of you again.

- Mother!

Barnabas, did you ever think this would happen?

- No.

I still don't quite understand it,

but maybe I never will.

- Perhaps you'd better not try to understand.

It was my mother who saved me from that animal.

If she hadn't started the bells ringing when she did --

- Don't leave this house tonight

or any night until that animal is found

and destroyed.

- I won't.

Barnabas? - Yes.

- That animal attacked me after I left Chris's cottage.

- When I went to the cottage, Chris wasn't there,

but the place was in shambles!

Do you suppose that animal, whatever it was,

could have attacked Chris?

I'm frightened.

[phone ringing]

- No answer?

- No.

Why don't I go over to the cottage?

- I hate for you to go out there.

- Don't worry about me.

I'll go and get Roger's g*n.

I really do appreciate this.

Julia, how is my mother?

- She's feeling better. She's resting.

- May I go and see her now? - Of course.

[branches rustling]
