NARRATOR: Collinwood, the year is

and another night is ending,

a night that has brought death to a young girl

and despair to Beth Chavez, who has spent

the dark hours searching for the ailing Quentin Collins.

But now the morning has come, and Beth Chavez

will learn that daylight holds even deeper despair

than the darkness and terror of the night.

[ screaming ]

Oh, Quentin!

What?

What am I doing here?

BETH: I don't know.

I was in your room, you went to get a doctor.

And when I came back, you were gone.

Oh, Quentin, I've been looking

for you desperately all night long.

QUENTIN: All night?

Yes, where have you been?

How did you get this way?

I don't remember.

I don't remember anything.

[ suspenseful music ]

[ waves crashing ]

[ eerie music ]

Don't you remember anything beyond my leaving my room?

Why do you keep asking me that?

Don't you think I wanna know?

Yes, of course you do.

You better change those clothes.

Yes, yes.

Why are they bloody and torn?

I don't know, Beth, I don't know.

It will be all right, Quentin, it will be all right.

No, it won't.

Magda's put a curse on me.

You don't really believe that, do you?

She said something would happen to me last night,

and something did happen to me last night.

And I don't have any idea what it was!

No idea?

No, do you?

Yes, I do.

What?

It was the gypsies.

They drove you out of your mind with fear.

And then sent some gypsy fiend to pursue you.

Something that made you go running out into the night,

terrified, stumbling blindly through the woods.

Could that be possible?

It must be that.

Oh, but the night is over, Quentin.

The fiend is gone and you must try to get some rest.

No, it's not over quite so easily, Beth.

I don't know what's to come next,

but I do know it's not over.

[ dramatic music ]

When he signed the papers,

he said he'd be gone by now, but he hasn't gone.

Where is he?

I don't quite know.

Beth came to me last night

and said that he was feeling ill and left the house.

But I don't believe one word of it.

I do believe he's trying to break his bargain.

He signed the papers, I gave him the money.

I want him out of here as quickly as possible.

Do you understand, Evan?

[ knocking ]

Will you take care of that for me?

I will.

- [ knocking ] - Come in.

I just came to tell you that Quentin

is back in the house, he's in his room now.

JUDITH: How does he feel?

Better, much better.

Well enough, I hope, to speak with Mr. Hanley?

I'm not so sure about that.

Well, I am, this situation

- has to be... - [ phone ringing ]

Hello?

Oh, hello, Reverend Trask.

What?

Oh, no, oh, no,

is there anything I can do?

Oh, yes, of course, I understand, thank you.

My dear Judith, what's the matter?

A girl was m*rder*d at the school last night.

- EVAN: What? - BETH: How?

A teacher, torn apart by a wild beast.

Oh, no.

Yes, it does seem a rather hideous way to die,

doesn't it, Beth?

Yes.

I must go now, I just came to tell you--

That Quentin was back, thank you.

Poor Reverend Trask.

It seems that everything that could possibly happen

to try a man's soul happens to him.

And yet he always thinks of others.

Now he's busy with the police,

but he took the time to call here and warn us

that a vicious beast was loose and to beware.

Are you all right, Judith?

Yes, Reverend Trask inspires me to courage.

Then I'll go and speak to Quentin.

You said you wanted this matter settled immediately.

So do I.

A teacher at the school,

she was k*lled by a wild beast

that came into the room.

QUENTIN: That's what the police say?

Yes, that's what they said.

You know what that means, don't you?

No, no, I'm not sure.

It means that she was attacked

by the same beast that attacked you.

Oh, Quentin, whatever happened, you were lucky.

You at least escaped with your life.

That's a very neat theory, Beth,

a very neat theory, there's only one trouble.

What?

I haven't got a scratch on me,

and yet there was lots of blood.

[ knocking ]

Who is it?

EVAN: It's Evan Hanley, Quentin.

Don't let him in.

Yes, I wanna talk to him.

Then wait a minute.

All right.

QUENTIN: Come in, Evan.

How are you, Quentin?

QUENTIN: What do you mean?

Well, I heard you weren't feeling well.

Oh, yes, well I feel fine now.

Good, because Judith wanted me to speak to you

about a rather delicate business matter.

May I proceed?

Yes.

As I said, it is rather delicate.

Would you mind leaving us for a moment, Beth?

I don't think I should.

Go on, Beth, leave us alone.

A short while ago, I drew up a paper for your sister

which you signed, and in return for which,

you received $, on condition that you

leave Collinwood immediately and stay away forever.

Now since you have not fulfilled your bargain,

Quentin, what's the matter?

What do you mean?

You look like--

QUENTIN: Like what?

I don't know exactly, but, there's something in your face.

Yes, there's something in my face.

And something in my mind and in my heart.

I'm sick, Evan, sick with fear.

Fear of what?

I don't know exactly, I don't know.

Evan, Evan, you've gotta help me.

Well, how can I help you if you don't know anything?

There is one thing I know, Magda the gypsy

has laid a curse on me.

What kind of curse?

Why, she wouldn't tell me, she wouldn't tell me.

She only said it would begin last night.

And something did happen to me last night.

And I must know what it was!

And you want me to try to find out?

Yes.

You sure you want to know?

Yes, yes, 'cause it's worse not knowing what happened,

not remembering anything.

[ suspenseful music ]

You're sure you remember nothing?

One minute I was here in pain.

After that, I remember nothing.

Until up to a short time ago.

All right, Quentin, I'll believe that.

And I will help you.

But it will cost you quite a bit

for my professional help.

But you're my friend.

[ laughing ] Quentin, perhaps you don't remember

the events of last night, but surely you do remember

some of the basic facts of life.

There is no such thing as a friend.

[ dramatic music ]

Just what do you want from me?

I'll tell you when the time comes.

I'll give you anything

if you only find out what happened to me.

Well, desperation makes you generous, Quentin.

I like that.

Will you go to Magda right now?

[ knocking ]

JUDITH: Are you still in there, Evan?

Yes, Judith.

I think you will find your brother quite cooperative.

Here's your money.

That's not what I want.

I know, you want me to go.

I think it's for the best.

But I don't.

You did, what made you change?

It's entirely my own business.

It is not, in this paper it says that you...

Now so much for your paper, Judith.

As I told you, the matter's settled.

[ eerie music ]

[ knocking ]

MAGDA: Yes?

EVAN: It's Evan Hanley.

MAGDA: Mr. Barnabas ain't here.

And where is Sandor?

MAGDA: I don't know.

Then we are quite alone.

- Yes. - EVAN: Good.

I don't understand.

What you and I have to talk about may sound strange

to other ears.

I see you've been reading the cards.

Yes, to make me forget, to tell you the truth.

I was nervous.

EVAN: What do you have to be nervous about?

A girl was m*rder*d not far from here

by some strange animal, that makes me nervous.

You heard about the m*rder?

Yes, terrible ain't it?

And what's worse is that-that thing is still loose.

I'm going to stay very close to home.

Reading the cards.

Yes, to forget.

What do the cards say about Quentin Collins?

About how your curse is working?

Curse?

Don't deny it.

He told you I put a curse on him?

Yes, you said it was to begin last night.

Strange things happened to Quentin Collins last night.

Now what do these strange things mean,

and what kind of a curse did you put on him?

I don't want to talk about it.

Magda, I am here to talk about it.

All right.

I was angry, I put a curse on him.

I said it would be a terrible curse.

I did that, but what does it mean?

I said a few words,

lots of people say lots of words.

Then you admit that you put a curse on Quentin Collins.

I admit I tried.

All right.

You tried.

Now tell me what the curse was.

No.

But if you're so sure it didn't work,

why won't you tell me?

All you'd be telling me would be words,

empty, meaningless words.

Mr. Hanley, you are a lawyer,

I am only a poor, ignorant gypsy.

I know you could take my words

and twist them to make them into whatever you want them.

So no, I don't tell you nothing.

You've already told me quite a bit.

You're trying to trick me, Mr. Lawyer.

No, you are trying to trick me

into believing that you are only a poor,

ignorant gypsy, armed with nothing more

than hollow threats and curses that won't work.

But you needn't be frightened, do you, Magda?

Not as long as you're wearing that pentagram.

It's just a gypsy jewelry,

worth only a few cents.

Is it?

Then sell it to me.

I'll give you $ for it.

I would like to, I would like to very much, but I can't.

It belonged to my dead mother.

And what did it protect her from?

You like gypsy jewellery?

I got lots I can sell you.

No, Magda, it's that one or nothing.

You see, I know more about matters other than the law.

The pentagram, one with its two points down

facing toward the devil, can protect one from many dangers.

Evil witches.

Malevolent demons.

Now which is it you've set abroad with your curse, Magda?

Which is it?

[ suspenseful music ]

If she wouldn't tell you what the curse was,

then I'm no better off than I was before.

Oh, what are you doing?

I'm drawing a pentagram.

Within its five points

are haven and sanctuary against a great many evils.

And Magda was wearing one, so I think we can

safely assume that whatever is troubling you

is connected to that pentagram.

What evils does it protect against, Evan?

Many, Quentin, many.

But I cannot tell which.

Not until we are sure of what is happening.

When will that be?

- Tonight. - What do you mean?

Unless I am very much mistaken,

this may be a solution to breaking your curse.

When the sun sets, I shall place these

two black candles at the two bottom points of the pentagram.

And then you must get inside of the pentagram

and stay there no matter what happens.

No matter what happens?

What's going to happen?

I'm not sure, Quentin.

Sometimes the pentagram holds and is strong enough

to contain the evil and break the curse.

That is what I am hoping will happen tonight.

And other times?

Other times it doesn't.

Well then what?

Well, let's just wait and see.

Let's just wait and see.

Oh, no, we won't, Evan.

I haven't got time for pentagrams.

Can't you see I'm a frightened man?

Yes, I can see that quite clearly.

- Tell me what I am. - No.

Tell me or get out of here

with your insane talk of pentagrams and evil.

Well all right, Quentin.

I do think I should leave now.

But before I go, let me tell you one other possibility

that could occur tonight.

You could die inside that pentagram.

It's been known to happen.

But it's not going to happen to me

because I'm not going to be inside any pentagram.

I'm going to be doing something about what happened

to me last night, something that makes sense.

Like k*lling Magda.

Don't do that.

If you do, there will be no hope at all.

Get out, Evan, get out!

One more thing.

I don't wanna hear any more!

This is something I have to say to Beth.

- To me? - Yes.

And it is very, very important.

Don't stay with him tonight.

You go away.

Far, far away.

Or you will regret it.

[ dramatic music ]

[ clock chiming ]

How do you feel?

You're frightened to be with me here, aren't you?

He has made you frightened, my friend, Evan Hanley.

No.

You're lying, you're scared to death, aren't you?

Yes, I am.

Well then, get out of here.

But Quentin--

I wanna be alone.

Now didn't you hear me?

Get out.

Are you sure that's what you want me to do?

Yes.

Very well, whatever you say.

[ gasping ] Beth.

BETH: What is it, Quentin?

The pain.

BETH: Oh, Quentin.

Just like last night.

Quentin, no.

Please, don't leave.

I won't, no, I won't.

It's getting worse.

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

I don't know either.

QUENTIN: Evan's pentagram.

Yes, it's our only hope.

I hope I'm doing it right.

I hope there's enough time.

What if it doesn't work?

It's got to work, Quentin.

[ moaning ]

Quentin, Quentin, can you hear me?

Gotta move, can you move?

You've got to get inside the pentagram.

Quentin.

The candles, he said two black candles.

[ gasping ]

Quentin, no, Quentin, no!

He's dying, oh!

Quentin, you've gotta get up here.

You'll be all right.

It can't be too late.

[ Quentin gasping ]

Oh, Quentin, it's happening again, Quentin.

[ growling ]

No, no, Quentin, no, don't come near me.

Quentin, no!

[ screaming ]

[ eerie music ]
