NARRATOR:Collinwood before the turn of the century,

and Quentin Collins has become the victim of an evil curse

that will follow him all the days of his life.

On this night, with the rising of the full moon,

a young woman finds out

the terrible thing he is destined to be.

No!

No!

Don't, don't come near me!

Please!

[ screams ]

[ growling ]

[ foreboding music ]

[ knocking ]

Come in.

I was looking for you, Tim.

What for?

I expected to see you at the services for Dorcas.

Well, I went for a walk in the woods.

CHARITY: Alone?

Yes.

That wasn't a very sensible thing to do.

The animal that attacked Dorcas

must still be roaming through the woods.

I know, but I-- I had to get away.

I had to be by myself for a while.

Poor Dorcas.

She was a good girl and so completely devoted to father.

Did your father send you looking for me?

He isn't here.

He and my mother accompanied Dorcas' body back to her family.

They've left me in charge of the school for the evening.

Does that bother you?

On this particular night, yes, it does.

Why?

I don't know.

But ever since Dorcas was k*lled,

I've had a strange fear inside me.

It's as if her death were simply a warning.

What kind of warning?

That none of us can escape, Tim.

That each and every one of us is doomed.

[ suspenseful music ]

[ eerie music ]

Charity, your fear is understandable,

but I doubt that some monster is lurking about

waiting to eliminate us one by one.

Maybe not, but I can't help being afraid

as long as Dorcas' k*ller is still at large.

That's why I was looking for you.

I didn't want to think I was alone

at the school with the children.

You don't have to worry about that.

I don't plan to leave again tonight.

Why did you come back to the classroom?

You usually go to your room and read.

Oh, I have, I have some papers

I want to mark for tomorrow.

Oh, can I help you?

You could, of course, but I'd rather do it alone.

It enables me to mark the children's progress, you see.

I see.

Well, at least I know where to find you if I need you.

Yes.

I'd better go upstairs now,

and make sure all the children are in bed.

I'll talk to you later.

[ ominous music ]

[ clicking ]

- Tim! - Ssh!

What are you doing here?

We have to be very quiet now.

If we make any noise, we're both in trouble.

Makes no difference.

I'm in enough trouble as it is.

Now, Reverend Trask can always think

of something to add to any punishment.

Did you come to get me out?

No, I'm afraid I can't do that,

but I did bring you some food.

Thank you.

I get sort of sick of bread and water.

I know, it isn't much,

but it's just going to have to hold you until tomorrow.

I'll try to get you some more then.

Don't worry, it will.

And if anyone comes in, you have to hide it.

If you're discovered with this, I can't bring you any more.

You understand?

Yes.

Well, I have to go now, Jamison.

I'm sorry, I'll try to see you again tomorrow.

Tim?

Yes?

When's my punishment going to be over?

I don't know.

I wish I could tell you that, but I just can't.

I wish someone would tell me why I'm being punished.

Reverend Trask says it's because

I cheated on an examination,

but I didn't, Tim, I swear.

I believe you.

Then why am I still here?

What's he gonna do to me?

All right, I'll tell you.

Reverend Trask requires complete and total obedience,

and you have not shown that to him.

In fact, you've shown quite the opposite.

You've shown him only your independent spirit

and enterprise.

Do you understand what I mean?

Yes.

It means that, that I have to get out of this place.

I've got to do it alone,

and I will do it.

You wait and see, Tim.

But be careful, Jamison.

Be very careful.

[ knocking ]

CHARITY: Please open the door.

Get back over there in the corner.

Now hide, hide that food.

Why did you have the door bolted?

I was working.

I didn't want to be disturbed.

Who did you think might disturb you?

Oh, I didn't know.

Just wanted to take the precaution.

You're not telling me the truth, Tim.

Why, yes

I can always tell when people are concealing the truth.

That seems to be an extraordinary family trait.

Is it possible you were in there?

Giving aid and comfort to our little prodigal?

My dear, stop trying to sound so much like your father.

You haven't answered my question.

No, I was not in there.

We shall see.

[ mysterious music ]

Stand up, Jamison.

I want you to look me in the eye,

and to answer a question.

Have you been in this room alone all evening?

Yes, Miss Trask.

CHARITY: Didn't Tim come in here and see you?

No, Miss Trask.

Jamison, what are you hiding?

- Hiding? - Inside your shirt?

Nothing.

Jamison, you've got something stuffed in your shirt.

I want you to show me what it is.

You might as well show it her, Jamison.

She's not going to leave until you do.

Cheese and some meat.

I don't need to ask him where he got this.

I brought it to him. I admit it.

The boy cannot live on bread and water alone.

CHARITY: What the boy needs most is discipline.

TIM: Discipline? What are you going to do to him now?

I shall have to consult my father.

In the meantime, Jamison,

I want to give you something to

make you think about your behavior.

If any punishment is required in this situation,

it should be directed toward me.

I brought the food.

CHARITY: He was willing to take it from you.

TIM: He was hungry.

Jamison, you'll have ample time

to browse through this between now and tomorrow.

And hopefully to learn something from it.

JAMISON: What is it?

My father's favorite book of meditation.

Read it long enough, Jamison,

and it will show you the error of your ways.

After you.

Goodnight, Jamison.

JAMISON: Goodnight.

[ suspenseful music ]

Charity, now listen to me.

If I mean anything to you at all,

don't take this matter to your father.

I'm sorry, I have no choice.

I couldn't possibly lie to my father.

You don't have to lie.

Just leave the matter as it is.

Let it alone.

That's the same as lying.

He certainly has done a thorough job on you.

He's taught me to be responsible,

if that's what you mean.

No, Charity, that's not what I mean.

Tim, I really don't want to discuss it any longer.

It's quite late and I'm very tired.

[ slamming ]

[ panicky music ]

It was the sound of the window shutting.

Tim, he's gotten away!

And look.

Look what he used to reach the window.

The book of meditation.

What an insufferable child.

Oh, I'm quite impressed.

This is very original. It just goes to show how

you've all been underestimating his intelligence.

It's your fault he got away.

My fault, you gave him the book.

I wouldn't have had to give him the book

if you hadn't given him the food!

What am I gonna do now?

My father left me in charge, and I've failed him.

He'll never forgive me.

The boy cannot be far.

I'll go outside and try to find him.

No.

We'll wait.

Wait for what?

If he's out there in those woods,

he certainly is not safe.

The woods cover a lot of the grounds.

You could look for him all night and never find him.

Besides, he won't stay in them.

What do you mean?

There's only one place Jamison can go, Tim,

and that's back to Collinwood.

We'll go there and get him.

[ wind howling ]

[ rustling ]

[ shuffling ]

[ menacing music ]

I'm sorry,

but Miss Judith is in Collinsport for the evening,

and Mr. Edward's not here.

Who is this please?

This is Miss Charity Trask.

Who is this?

BETH:Beth Chavez.

Oh, oh yes, the maid.

Now I want you to listen very carefully.

Jamison Collins has run away from the school.

I feel very sure he'll go directly to Collinwood.

When he gets there,

I don't want you to let him out of your sight.

Mr. Shaw and I will be there to get him soon.

Did he leave there alone or with someone?

Alone.

Oh, no.

He'll have to come through the woods then.

Are my instructions clear, Miss Chavez?

Yes, yes, I'll watch for him.

[ terrorstricken music ]

[ footsteps ]

Oh, Jamison, thank God you're all right.

Beth, you've got to hide me. He'll be here any second.

Who?

Reverend Trask.

I ran away from school.

I know, Miss Trask called me.

Jamison, you shouldn't have gone through the woods alone.

Beth, I have no time to talk right now.

He followed me all the way.

Are you sure it was Reverend Trask?

- Yes. - Did he see you?

No, I didn't see him, but I heard him.

I was gonna go to the cottage first,

but this was closer.

Where's Quentin? He'll help me.

He's out for the night, Jamison.

I'll go out the back way.

No, no you won't.

You'll stay right here.

But Beth, they'll make me go back if they find

[ knocking ]

Go to the drawing room and close the doors.

You won't tell them, please?

No, don't worry about it. Go on.

[ knocking ]

I've come for the boy, Miss Chavez.

I know he's here and I want you to turn him over to me.

At once.

[ ominous music ]

I'm waiting, Miss Chavez.

I have not seen Jamison since you called.

I'm afraid Jamison's father is going to be very upset

when he hears all about this.

I would very much like a word with the boy's father.

Has he returned yet?

BETH: No, he's still at the Old House

with Barnabas Collins.

In that case, I can reach him by telephone.

Miss Trask, I'm afraid you can't do that.

CHARITY: Why not?

There's no telephone at the Old House.

Well then, Mr. Shaw and I will wait until he returns.

It may be very late.

I don't mind, I'll wait in the drawing room.

Or is there something in there you don't want me to see?

No, of course not.

Then allow me to go in, please.

You seem a bit ill at ease, Miss Chavez.

I'm very tired.

I was getting ready to go to bed when you called.

Do you always retire so early?

Are you suggesting that I was lying?

Is that it?

I don't know, were you?

No.

Would you mind if I searched the house?

I'm afraid you'll have to get

Mr. Edward's permission to do that.

CHARITY: I don't think that will be necessary.

What do you mean?

Jamison is here, isn't he?

And you have been trying to hide him from me.

BETH: Miss Trask--

You needn't try to deny it Miss Chavez.

He's hiding behind those drapes. I saw them move.

Jamison, would you please come out here.

[ suspenseful music ]

BETH: Are you satisfied, Miss Trask?

He was there, I'm sure of it.

He must've gone out through the window.

He was not there.

It must've been the wind that you saw.

I opened the windows myself earlier this evening.

I see.

Charity, I think we best go back to the school.

Why?

If the boy were coming here,

he would've been here long ago.

He's obviously either gone somewhere else,

or he's out there hiding in the woods.

We really should go and call the police.

We can't go back to the school without Jamison.

Then there's one other possibility.

What?

Suppose your father comes back to the school

and discovers that not only is Jamison missing,

but that you are gone as well.

He'll realize I'm out looking for Jamison.

TIM: Then suppose your father

goes out to look for Jamison

and finds him before you do.

Perhaps we should go back to the school.

I'd be better off being there when my father returns.

And you can help me explain what happened.

I'm sorry we troubled you, Miss Chavez.

Goodnight.

Goodnight.

Thank you, Miss Chavez.

[ anxious music ]

BETH: Jamison, are you out there?

It's all right, Jamison, they're gone.

[ thump ]

[ howling ]

Jamison?

Jamison.

Don't hide from me.

[ rustling ]

Jamison!

Is that you?

[ growling ]
