EDWARD:The great house of Collinwood

as it looked just before the turn of the century.

To this troubled time in the past,

Barnabas Collins has come hoping to find answers

that will save the lives of two people in the present.

But while Barnabas works to learn the myriad secrets

of an era gone by,

he lives with one great danger

that someone, somehow,

will learn his own darkest secret.

And on this night,

in the Old House in the Collins estate,

someone will.

[ thunder rumbling ]

It's true.

What Dirk said, it's true!

[ eerie theme music playing ]

[ thunder rumbling ]

You're going to sit there, Dirk,

and not move until I tell you. Is that clear?

Yes.

Why did you bring me here?

You've had a busy evening and you need a rest.

A good long rest.

What are you going to do with me?

We will until you've recovered some of your strength

and then we will discuss it.

No, no.

I wanna know now.

Why? You're not going anywhere, are you?

You're...

Going to k*ll me, aren't you?

If I had wanted to do that,

I could have done it earlier at the cottage.

Why didn't you?

It would have been a mistake.

For the time being you are more useful

to me alive than dead.

[ Dirk groans ] Why?

I have a plan for you, Dirk.

But at the moment you are in no condition

to take your part in this.

What kind of a plan?

I'm hoping you'll be able to, to undo the damage you've done.

You're going to find Jamison

and then you are going to find a way of convincing him

that everything you've told him is a lie.

[ Dirk groans ]

What happens if, if I refuse?

You can't refuse.

You see, you have no will of your own.

I am your will.

You will do what I ask you to do.

It may be too late, you know.

May be too late.

No, Dirk.

You mean that,

that Jamison may have told someone?

Yes.

Because if he has,

the first thing I will do will be to k*ll you.

It appears that we're not alone.

Stay just where you are.

Who is down here?

Who is it?

You wouldn't get more than a few feet

from the front door without collapsing.

Please. I wanna get out of here.

- Please, let me go. - When I'm ready to let you go.

Meanwhile you're going to go some place

where you can have a good rest.

Jamison, where have you been?

I've been looking all over this house for you.

Outside.

Outside where? What have you been doing?

Where's my father? I've gotta see him!

- I've gotta talk to him! - Why?

You'll find out soon enough.

Jamison, your father is in Collinsport for the evening.

Where in Collinsport?

Maybe I can telephone him!

Telephone? No, that's out of the question, you know that.

Beth, this is important.

It's much more important for me to get you in bed

before your father comes here.

No, I'm not going up to bed.

You are going whether you like it or not.

What time is he coming back?

Not before :.

I've got an hour.

Jamison, you're coming up now.

No, I'm not!

I've gotta speak to my father tonight and I'm going to!

I'm gonna stay right down here until he comes in that door.

[ clock chimes ]

Jamison.

You're not the only one

your father's going to be angry with when he returns.

He's going to be just as angry with me, you know.

Why?

For allowing you to stay up as late as this.

I'm sorry, Beth, but there's nothing I can do.

Why don't you tell me what you wanted to tell him?

- No, I can't! - Why not?

Because my father's the one I'm gonna tell.

Tell what, Jamison?

Would you stop asking so many questions!

Jamison, did something happen to you

when you were outside?

Something that frightened you?

Yes.

Tell me what it was then.

No!

I can't tell you, I can only tell my father because it's...

It's what, Jamison?

Never mind!

Where are you going?

To my room, I have to get something.

[ Dirk groans ]

Something is wrong, Barnabas. Tell me what it is.

You should have regained your strength by now.

Tell me why haven't I?

- I don't know. - [ knocking on door ]

[ Dirk groans ]

Stay here and rest.

I'll come back later.

[ knocking on door ]

Tell me what happened.

I finally talked to Jamison.

Finally?

You've been in Collinwood for two and a half hours.

I know but Jamison wasn't.

He didn't get here until :.

- Where had he been? - I don't know.

But I'm convinced that he believes

whatever Dirk told him.

Why? What did he tell you?

I couldn't get him to tell me.

All he said was that he was very anxious to see his father.

He's waiting up for him now in the living room.

I see.

What are you going to do?

When is Edward expected back?

At :.

I'm afraid it's too late to do anything now.

What about your plan?

Well unfortunately Dirk is involved in that plan.

But I thought you had him under your control?

Yes.

But I went too far.

What do you mean?

Dirk hasn't recovered, and he isn't going to.

You mean, he's going to die?

- Yes. - Oh, no.

Now don't grieve for him, Beth.

If he'd had his way,

he would have destroyed everybody at Collinwood.

What are you going to do now?

What can I do?

There's still time for you to go back to Collinsport

before Edward comes home and speak to Jamison yourself.

No, that would be too dangerous.

But wouldn't it be more dangerous

if he told his father everything?

Beth, if I were to confront Jamison now,

after what he's been through, it may do harm to him,

and I cannot afford to alienate Jamison.

He is much too important to me.

Why is he so important to you?

You wouldn't know

and even if you did, you wouldn't understand.

I came back to Collinwood on a particular mission.

If Jamison were to be harmed now,

it could mean failure for me.

Then, you're just going to

let him tell Edward everything.

Yes.

But I'll be prepared for Edward

when the time comes.

Everything seems so hopeless now.

So terribly hopeless.

JAMISON: Father!

Jamison! What are you doing up?

I couldn't go to bed

because I had to wait up to talk to you!

But it's after :.

Father, please don't be angry at me but,

something happened that I think you should know about.

Something that's very frightening to me.

I didn't understand it at first. I didn't think it was true.

But now I know it's true, I saw for myself,

and he almost caught me!

Jamison, I can see that you are frightened by something.

Tell me as calmly as you can what it was.

Well, cousin Barnabas,

he has a secret.

But I found out what it is.

Well, what is it?

You're not gonna believe it.

But try, please, father, try!

Jamison, just tell me what Barnabas' secret is.

Barnabas, he...

Well, he's a vampire!

A vampire, Jamison?

You don't believe me, do you?

I never heard of anything so absurd in my life.

Father, please just listen to me.

I didn't believe Dirk either,

but then I went into the cellar of the Old House

and I saw the coffin that he sleeps in!

The coffin?

Yes, he has to stay in it during the day!

'Cause he can only rise at night.

Jamison, this is too incredible.

But it's true, father, and I'm frightened.

You still don't believe me, do you?

I believe that that fool Dirk could get you so upset

that you could imagine that you saw almost anything.

I know what I saw. I didn't imagine it!

You've got to believe me father, you've got to!

Now, Jamison.

All you have to do is go to the Old House.

Then you can see for yourself, then you know I'm not lying!

I'm not father, I'm not!

I'm not accusing you of lying, son.

Please, father, just go to the Old House.

Please!

All right, I'll go.

After I've taken you upstairs.

Well I don't know what to say, Jamison.

Except that, well that I'm somewhat shocked

that you lent such credence to this story.

We both know that Dirk is,

well has been behaving very strangely lately

and I'm not surprised by anything

he may have told your son.

Nor am I.

But the fact remains I've never seen Jamison

more frightened than he was tonight.

I don't think it was just merely words

that would do that to him.

You mean you actually believe in the story he's told?

Barnabas, you're a member of my family.

I shall believe nothing without seeing proof.

But by the same token, I must give Jamison

the benefit of the doubt.

I'm afraid I don't follow you.

Do you have any objection to my looking at your cellar?

My cellar?

Jamison says he was there earlier this evening and...

He saw a coffin.

I'm beginning to think that you really believe his story.

No, I didn't say that.

You may take my word for it, Edward.

There is no coffin in my cellar.

May I see for myself?

My word is not enough?

Under the circumstances, it is not enough for Jamison

and he's the one I have to deal with.

Very well, Edward, follow me.

Well I don't see any coffin, do you?

No.

I don't understand what's happened tonight.

I think I can guess.

Dirk was bitter about being dismissed by Judith.

He was prepared to do anything to get back at this family

so he told this wild story about me.

Barnabas, I don't believe that the story

is as wild as you may think it is.

Surely you don't believe that there is a vampire

menacing all of us?

There was a time where I would have called it impossible.

Now after learning the truth about Laura,

I can no longer dismiss the supernatural

as a figment of the imagination.

In addition there have been strange,

unexplainable attacks both here and in town.

Charity Trask was one of the victims as you'll recall.

Yes, I remember.

And you'll also remember the strange marks on her neck.

The doctors were at a loss

to explain how they were inflicted.

And you think they were inflicted by a vampire?

I don't know, Barnabas.

But I intend to find out.

And very soon.

May I ask how you intend to find out?

First of all, I will go and find Dirk Wilkins.

I want to know exactly what he told my son,

and then I will demand to see whatever evidence he has.

What happened?

I'm safe, but only for the moment.

I don't understand.

He refused to believe that a vampire is non-existent.

And he's gonna pursue it further?

Yes. Until he is satisfied.

And we must make him satisfied.

How?

He's looking for a vampire.

We must give him a vampire.

What are you talking about?

Dirk will not live out the night.

He will die and he will come again

and rise as a vampire.

I will see that Edward discovers him and destroys him.

And then the case will be closed

and my secret will be kept.

Come.

We must spend the rest of the night with him.

Until the end.
