NARRATOR: A cry of despair in the night,
for many strange things have happened
since the blood red sun set
on the Great Estate of Collinwood.
And in the main house, a man grieves for a dead child
he did not know was his.
While in an old house nearby, a gypsy lamenting a curse
which has k*lled her husband as well
decides she must destroy what has brought her to disaster.
[ dark music ]
You take my husband away.
You k*ll good man.
The child died, you don't do nothing no more.
It is done.
[ ominous music ]
There, now you don't do nothing for nobody.
King John in Romana asked Magda where the hand is.
I will tell him, even if he kills me.
The Collinses, eh?
Know them? [ chuckles ]
Yes, I know them. I work for them.
Do you know anything special about Quentin Collins?
Now look, I meet somebody in a bar, I'm not gonna tell--
Now look, I'd be willing to pay.
He's an arrogant lying drunk.
There, it won't cost you a cent.
The only reason he lives at Collinwood,
is because it's in his grandmother's will.
It stipulates that he can always live there.
Otherwise, the family would've kicked him out long ago.
No charge for any of that.
I wouldn't pay, I already knew that.
Oh?
What kind of information are you after?
Look, I fight good, does he?
I fight dirty.
I should think that he does too.
I think he's scared underneath.
I think you're scared too.
You call it scared, I call it careful.
You're asking all this for some reason, aren't you?
Tell me what do you plan to do with our Mr. Quentin Collins?
Certainly, I tell you now, and be blackmailed later.
[ laughing ]
Sorry, no.
We just had a misunderstanding, and I must see him again.
And he won't want to see me.
So, would you be willing to do me a favor?
Why should I do that?
Because you can't trust me either.
We'll be very good friends.
[ sinister music ]
[ peaceful music ]
So I'm a father.
There was going to be another Quentin Collins,
but he died.
And my daughter, what about her?
Is she like Jenny?
Dare I go see her?
Dare I?
May I come in, Quentin?
You almost did a second ago.
I remembered something I had to do.
It certainly didn't take you very long.
I'm very quick.
Brandy at this hour?
That's what you're thinking, isn't it?
Why no, not at all.
I like seeing a man take a drink in the daytime.
I enjoy sophisticated men.
Why do you drink so much?
I am in sorrow.
For poor dear Judy?
No, my pet, for myself. For my life.
In fact, I have several sorrows.
Would you care to drink one of them away for me?
Oh, I should love to.
But, would you mind if I had sherry?
Not at all.
What if your father walks in?
- I shall lock the door. - Mm-hmm.
Then you'd be even more compromised.
[ giggling ] Oh, Quentin.
And Charity, don't you know what happens
to nice, young ladies when they're in locked rooms
with drunken bachelors?
Oh, but you're not a bachelor, you're a widower.
Thanks for reminding me.
You know that I, also, am a father?
No.
Well, I say that because one never knows
who has heard in this house and who has not.
Well, I am a father, Charity.
I had no idea.
QUENTIN: Does that frighten you?
No, it just makes me very sad.
Your wife must've been very young
and very beautiful when she died.
So I'm told.
It's understandable your not having remarried.
But I feel sure that, in time, you will find that--
that you do need someone.
Just as father found out so quickly after poor mama died.
Oh, he needed Judith, I think.
Man is not meant to live alone.
At least, so I've been told.
QUENTIN: But you've succeeded, Charity.
I don't think I've succeeded very well.
I long to be more settled.
You'll find someone.
But you know, it would help if you had money of your own,
it always does.
Though money means very little to me.
In fact, I don't even consider money one of the things
I look for in a husband.
Ah.
Family is more important to me.
Family and a sense of humor.
You have a very appealing sense of humor, Quentin.
How could I? I'm always completely serious.
[ door rattling ]
MAGDA: Quentin!
Oh, go away, gypsy.
I don't want my fortune told today.
Quentin, I've got to talk to you.
[ chuckling ]
And you see, Charity, no one can resist my charm.
Oh, Quentin. We've got to be alone.
My father does not like you in this house, you know.
Quentin, tell her to leave.
Charity, if you would be so kind
If we can finish our conversation later, Quentin.
Well, we, uh, we don't have much choice, do we?
Quentin. Quentin, I've got good news.
I swear at the hand.
The hand, it's gone, it won't do nothing never again.
QUENTIN: What do you mean?
I cut it up with a hatchet.
- No. - MAGDA: Yes.
And I threw it into the fire.
No. No! You die!
You fool, what in God's name am I going to do now, fool?
MAGDA: Oh, let me go.
You want me to be found out?
You want the curse to go on?
- MAGDA: No, Quentin. - QUENTIN: Uhh.
Why did you burn the hand? Why?
No good, Quentin. No good.
We could've found another Judy anchor.
No, Quentin, she was the only one that knew,
I swear it.
Someone, somewhere has got to make that hand cure me.
No, Quentin, that hand is bad, it is evil.
It is the haunted hand of Count Petofi.
Oh, Quentin, but it won't cause no more trouble, Quentin.
No more.
[ menacing music ]
[ whispering ] Magda, look.
[ screaming ]
- MAGDA: Stay away! - QUENTIN: No.
[ sobbing ] It's going to k*ll me.
No, Magda. Look.
The hand's gone.
Where did it go?
Quentin.
QUENTIN: Magda.
Magda, that hand can't be destroyed.
MAGDA: It's going to get me.
QUENTIN: Magda, maybe it was trying to help me.
Perhaps that's why you couldn't destroy it.
No, no, Quentin. It came back to hurt us.
Magda, you told me that hand
was the most magical hand in the world.
MAGDA: Yes, yes.
QUENTIN: And what good has it done us?
Changed a face or two.
MAGDA: No, Quentin, Charity Trask,
she would be dead and in her grave now
if not for that hand, I swear.
And look at the people that are dead, because of it.
Your husband, Julietta, and my son.
Oh, that's right, Quentin, have a drink.
That's a good way to get over it, huh?
Don't you tell me how to get over it.
That's one thing you're not very good at,
or else I wouldn't be like I am.
Quentin, Quentin, we fight.
I yell at you, you yell at me.
But that hand, that hand has got power to do anything
if you know how to get it to work for you.
Quentin, I ain't gonna try no more.
No more.
All right, I'll go to Evan Handley.
He knows about the hand, he'll use it.
No, Quentin. No.
I pray to God that it leaves him and goes away.
That--That when I go back to the old house,
it won't be in the box, that it will be gone forever.
[ door knocking ]
- QUENTIN: Who is it? - Tim Shaw.
Hello, Quentin, Magda.
Hello, Mr. Shaw,
you haven't been to see me in a long time.
No, that's quite true. I haven't, have I?
You didn't need anymore deadly nightshade, huh?
MAGDA: Huh, you don't remember?
No. No, I don't.
When, when did I buy nightshade from you?
- Uh-uh, let's see-- - TIM: Magda, when?
Let me see, it was a day or so
before the old Mrs. Trask died.
Let me go.
TIM: I came to you, I bought poison?
MAGDA: Oh, you ain't got no more memory
than anybody else in this place. [ grunts ]
but I know what you did with it.
I don't know what she's talking about.
You've come here to tell me that?
No--No, I brought you a note.
- Have a drink. - No, thanks.
They say she has powers. That Magda.
[ dark music ]
Are you a friend of his?
TIM: Not now. I just met him.
He seems to want to see you very badly.
He thinks there's been some misunderstanding
between you two.
Misunderstanding?
Yes, I suppose you could put it that way.
Look, I don't know about anything like that.
All I know is that he wants to see you.
He seems to think it's vital that you agree to see him.
Vital?
Now that's an interesting word, vital.
Vital implies living and life.
You're a schoolteacher. Doesn't it?
I suppose it does, Quentin.
Vital, yes it is vital to see him once more.
Vital to me.
Is he still at the Blue Whale?
I left him there.
Quentin?
CHARITY: What are you doing?
TIM: Charity, hello, I came to see Quentin.
You stay away from Quentin.
You'll k*ll him just as you k*lled mama.
You get out of this house and never come back.
[ eerie music ]
Good afternoon, Mr. Collins.
I know what I want, what do you?
[ sinister music ]
Before you do anything, will you just listen to me?
Did you listen to me
when you had me tied to that table?
No, no it was wrong to do that.
No, it wasn't a good plan.
QUENTIN: Not good for you, no.
Look, Mr. Collins, I have words that you need to hear.
Soon, the moon will be full, full again.
So, I suggest that you take your hand out of the pocket,
sit down and listen.
I'll give you two minutes.
ARISTEDE: And then what?
Two minutes, that's all.
Have you got a knife or a g*n in your pocket?
seconds have gone by.
Look, I was wrong, I said that, didn't I?
Wrong not to tell you certain facts about myself.
seconds.
Look, this is difficult to explain,
but there's a cure for what you suffer, there is a cure.
seconds.
Aren't you listening to me, don't you want to be cured?
QUENTIN: I don't believe you.
If you do as I say, next week, when the moon is full,
if you're not cured you won't have to give me what I want.
The hand, of course.
Do you know the cure?
No.
If you would've said yes, I would've k*lled you,
because I would've known you were lying.
Now, who knows the cure? Tell me.
I can't, but if I come to Collinwood tomorrow night,
if you just show me that you have the hand,
I'll take you to someone who knows.
Look, you can put it anywhere you want afterwards,
give it to anyone you trust, because we can help you.
"We?" Who else knows about me?
Someone who understands the moon better than you or I.
That doesn't make any sense.
Look, does any of this, Mr. Collins?
I mean, the way you are,
what we're sitting discussing here?
Now, how much time do I have left now?
Your time is up.
- Are you going to k*ll me? - Would Mr. Fenn-Gibbons mind?
- Mr. Fenn-Gibbons? - Never mind.
I should know better
not to expect too much truth out of you
in one meeting.
What time tomorrow will you be at Collinwood?
Anytime you say, Mr. Collins, anytime.
[ dark music ]
[ wind howling ]
[ clock chiming ]
Oh, no!
No! [ whimpering ] No!
No!
[ eerie music ]
QUENTIN:Magda, you told me that hand
is the most magical hand in the world.
MAGDA:Oh, it's got power, Quentin.
Power to do anything, anything.
Then you're what I need.
You're exactly what I need.
[ ominous music ]
