[eerie music]
VOICEOVER:Night at the Collinwood,
a night of decision.
For Quentin has agreed to tell Carolyn of the Leviathans,
their evil plans for her and their part
in the recent murders.
He has begun by telling Carolyn that Jeb Hawkes
m*rder*d her father.
It's the truth Carolyn.
Jeb did m*rder your father.
Did he?
Then prove it.
It's easy enough to say that Jeb is my father's m*rder*r
without offering me one shred of evidence.
QUENTIN: All right, I'll tell you everything.
CAROLYN: Jeb.
Carolyn, I couldn't come. Something just happened.
What is it?
Inspector Guthrie was just m*rder*d at the antique shop.
CAROLYN: What?
They got his m*rder*r.
The same guy that k*lled the Sheriff and your father.
Who?
-JEB: It isn't gonna be easy-- -Who?
Philip Todd.
He just confessed.
[suspenseful music]
[eerie music]
CAROLYN: Philip Todd m*rder*d my father.
I don't believe it.
I know, I couldn't believe it either.
No, he likes my father.
Philip let him use the antique shop
when father had messages for me.
And Philip couldn't k*ll anyone.
You're right, Carolyn.
Did you know I'm well, Mr. Collins?
QUENTIN: No, barely at all.
You said yourself that you didn't believe it.
Why would Philip Todd k*ll Paul Stoddard, Jeb?
He won't say why he did it.
He won't say anything.
Because he didn't have a reason.
No, Jeb, he hasn't.
He and Megan were kind to my father
and to me when he was k*lled.
And it wasn't an act.
Well, the police think that Philip is a schizophrenic.
And that would account for his k*lling your father.
And they had to k*ll Davenport because Davenport
was gonna find out.
And he had to k*ll again tonight.
[eerie music]
I just can't believe that Philip could have done it.
Jeb, tell me everything that happened.
All right.
The investigator had been to the shop to question him.
Evidently, when the inspector was here,
Philip called him.
Well, Guthrie went of course.
An hour later, Philip woke into the Police Station.
He simply said, I've done it again.
He didn't know what he was talking about.
He took them back to the shop.
And there was Guthrie's body.
CAROLYN: Oh, Jeb.
Paul Stoddard died as a result of something he had seen,
something so horrid that his heart gave out.
I don't think that something was Philip Todd.
The clothing in the two murders was disintegrated
by a substance that no one could identify.
Is that true this time, Jeb?
Yes.
What's the substance? Hmm?
Did this man die of a heart attack too?
Now, I wonder why. What's the reason?
And just how did Philip Todd m*rder these two men?
He won't tell the police even that.
But they must make him tell.
They're still questioning him.
I'm going to telephone the police.
Perhaps they found out something further by now.
I'm going to find out everything that's going on.
I think we've met before Collinsport.
Where in this to, Collins?
When?
The only place we could have met is the one place
I've never been, Jeb.
Hell.
Oh, you think that's where I've been.
QUENTIN: That's where your ideas come from.
Or maybe I can whip up a few special ones for you.
Oh, you'll try
You'll try [snickering].
I'm very sure of that.
But you let me tell you something.
I have learned to take care of myself.
[snickers] For quite a long time I imagined.
[eerie music]
You don't believe the sad story of Philip Todd, do you?
Never.
Why don't you try and clear it?
I'm going to.
You won't make him change his confession.
Hmm.
Do you want to make a bet on that, Mr. Hawkes?
And Philip has told you nothing further?
Isn't there some way you can get him to explain it?
You must call in a psychiatrist or something.
Carolyn, I'm sorry I'm late.
Hello, Barnabas.
Sheriff, will you call me back?
If Mr. Todd says anything further.
Yes, thank you.
What's wrong?
Barnabas, Philip has just confessed.
Philip?
Yes, Barnabas.
To the murders, Barnabas.
Todd?
But that's impossible.
Is it, Mr. Collins?
Or did you have another suspect in mind?
[suspenseful music]
I would never have thought, Philip.
Yeah, it sure shocks you, doesn't it?
Yes, it does.
Carolyn, have you told your mother?
Oh, no.
She'll be very upset I'm sure.
Will you stay here until I do?
I don't really know what to say to her.
She's as fond of Philip as we all would be.
You're in serious trouble, Jeb.
[laughing] I was.
But I'm not anymore.
You and your friend here should realize it.
You must realize that you shouldn't have sent Philip
for the box, Barnabas.
Oh, you were right to ask him to get.
Philip's a weak man.
He has no faith, which I'm sure you noticed
and probably encouraged.
You've been clever, Barnabas, but I've been cleverer.
You cannot let Philip die for what you've done.
Oh really?
Why don't you order me to confess?
Go on, Barnabas. You can save him
without incriminating yourself.
Oh, how kind of you to think of me.
You k*lled Paul, you k*lled the Sheriff, and now this.
You just love listing my crimes, don't you.
Why don't I list one of yours, a very serious one.
Treason.
Yeah, Barnabas.
You and I know our true selves
for you are a traitor.
To a cause I've never believed in.
Oh, you should have believed it from the beginning.
Don't try to threaten me.
We don't threaten, we act.
No one will ever stop me from fighting you.
No one?
You do whatever you will, Barnabas.
You can't stop the Leviathus from taking over
whoever we want or whatever house,
or even this room to be our shrine.
Yes, Barnabas, Philip and I will be left
and you, you will be the haunted,
the tormented, the lost.
Just as you've lost me, you will lose others,
I promise you.
I won't interfere anymore, Barnabas.
[brooding music]
But look at the last person you try to enlighten.
Look at Philip.
You cannot sacrifice all your converts.
No, not all, just a few well-chosen ones,
like Mrs. Stoddard for instance or David.
You won't get away with hurting them.
My mother is terribly upset,
she refuses even to believe it.
I must go and see Megan.
But Carolyn, this is not the time to go.
CAROLYN: Barnabas, I feel I must.
Please do as I say.
You're not in charge of my life, Barnabas.
Jeb, will you take me?
JEB: Of course.
- Are you sure you're feeling-- - I am.
I'll get my coat.
[eerie music]
I'm going to have to k*ll that man.
We don't even know how to do that.
The book can tell but I'll never have another chance to,
to look at it.
And what are we going to do, Barnabas?
Wait until Carolyn comes back and tell her everything then?
-Will she believe us? -No.
Barnabas, I told her it was Jeb,
before I had a chance to explain, he came in.
Then she will think us was mad,
that we have to be logical and take the step-by-step.
QUENTIN: All right, just where are we going to begin?
The box, we must find the box.
QUENTIN: Barnabas.
If we have that, at least they cannot take over others.
You'll never be able to get it.
It's in Jeb's room. It has to be kept there.
Philip was caught, Barnabas.
I won't be.
No.
I can't let you take the chance.
I must do it tonight.
He'll k*ll you.
No, he won't.
He would have done that before if he'd wanted to
- but I don't know-- - And let me go with you.
No. Absolutely not.
Barnabas, you don't know what you're doing.
Please, now stay out of this.
You should have stayed out all the time.
But I haven't.
And he knows that I haven't.
He knows I'm in it.
He'll have to bring her back here.
That's our only chance.
Your time has come my friend.
Just as we knew it would [snickers].
[squeaking]
[snickers] Not even frightened of me, are you?
[squeaking]
[eerie music]
You and I are alike.
We know who our enemies are.
[eerie music]
Now, Mr. Collins, box is yours.
Deal with it whatever you will.
[eerie music]
How was Megan?
I just woke her up.
I gave her some sedatives.
She's upset. She's groggy.
I don't think it'll be any good if you saw her.
Wait until tomorrow.
I remember when Philip bought this
from the Chandra estate.
How pleased he was.
He admired everything in the shop so
almost too much to sell, he once told me.
He loved living here so.
He can't have k*lled my father [sobbing].
He just cannot.
I didn't wanna come and tell you.
I knew. I knew.
Carolyn, don't cry.
Please honey, I hate to see you cry.
[dramatic music]
Jeb.
I don't want you to be sad ever.
You do like me a little, don't you?
I.
I don't understand you sometimes.
Oh, I like you, Jeb.
-Only... -Only what?
It's just that you're so harsh with people sometimes.
Like Quentin.
When I walked into the room this evening,
I knew you'd been fighting or at least arguing.
Honey, I like Quentin Collins.
There's no reason for me not to.
He just doesn't like me that's all.
[dramatic music]
See the antique shop on the window
over the Collinsport Inn?
We'll wait there until Jeb and Carolyn leave.
He knows you're up to something.
There may be a trap.
Well, if there is, I'll have to escape it.
We must destroy that box.
[dramatic music]
It's good that we got here before that storm broke.
[thunder rumbling]
You're gonna be all right?
Oh, I'll be fine, yes.
Think you'll be able to sleep?
I don't know, I think so.
I just wanna sit up for a moment to think.
Yeah.
Can I see you tomorrow?
Call me as soon as you talk to Megan.
[thunder rumbling]
Carolyn, if any people come around and ask questions
about me, you'll tell me, won't you?
If I believe what they say, I will.
Good night, Jeb.
Good night.
[dramatic music]
You stay here.
Keep them from coming in.
[thunder rumbling]
[wind howling]
[eerie music]
Carol. Carolyn.
Look at this.
You must understand.
You must understand.
You remembered me when I was Joseph?
What a lovely, quiet, sweet little baby I was.
Or do you remember me better as Alexander?
Sweet little Alexander.
I remember how I tried to scare you
with this [Carolyn gasps].
Or do you remember me best as Michael.
I think it was as Michael that I first began to realize
how much I wanted you,
so much that I couldn't wait until I grew up
and became Jeb.
You can understand that, can't you?
Why do you keep telling me these things?
You've told me this before,
I didn't understand it then,
and I don't understand it now.
I don't believe that you and Michael
and Alexander and the baby could all be the same person.
That's not possible.
But it's true, Carolyn.
And now that you know,
you're going to be all mine.
Now, come to me.
Come to me.
[Carolyn whimpering]
Come to me. Come to me.
-[Carolyn mumbles]. -Come to me.
What have you done?
What have you done?
[screams]
Who is that?
Who is that?
Jeb.
Jeb, you've k*lled someone.
JEB: Don't believe that.
Who is it?
Whose body is that?
There's nobody there.
[dramatic music]
[screaming]
There's no body in that room, Carolyn.
There's no one in that room.
Carolyn, there's no one.
It's all nothing.
Nothing.
[dramatic music]
[thunder rumbling]
What does it mean?
What does it mean?
Why do I keep having that dream?
[dramatic music]
[bell rings]
[suspenseful music]
Any sign of Jeb?
Stay around here.
Where are you going?
The only place where I can destroy this.
I'm coming with you.
No.
Once that I've destroyed this
I don't know what will happen.
Something may happen even to Jeb.
Stay here and see.
When I finished, I will go back to the old house.
If he returns here and then starts to leave here again,
it's because he will know the box is missing.
He must start looking for me.
He will know where to come.
[dramatic music]
It was here that I first saw this box,
the blackest day of my life.
Spirits, if you are listening,
know that I no longer need you.
Know that my days will be spent ridding my world
of the Leviathus.
[dramatic music]
[squeaking]
[shouts]
[dramatic music]
[eerie music]
