Am I late for the concert?

- You're just in time, Kami.

- The music is just about to start.

Right, Barney?

(tinkling piano music)

- That was really good. - Yeah, that was good.

- Great concert, Barney.

- Whoa! - Barney!

- Oh, thank you, Mario.

Oh, hi, everybody.

- We really liked your piano concert, Barney.

- Yeah, we sure did.

- Well, I'm glad, though I did get a lot of help from Mario.

- I got the idea for a concert from something special

that Mr. Boyd is working on in the caboose.

- Oh? (Bingo barking)

(Barney laughing)

- Oh, I think Bingo is in a hurry

to see what Mr. Boyd is working on.

- Come on, we'll show you what it is.

- Okay. - Yeah, let's go!

- Oh, I can't wait. (laughing)

Oh, I wonder what it could be.

(playful music)

I wonder what it is.

(Bingo barking)

Oh, I didn't know the caboose had a piano.

- That's what Mr. Boyd is working on.

- Does anyone know how to play it?

(Bingo playing piano)

- Come on, Bingo, dogs can't play the piano.

- But I can.

- Oh, hi, there, Mr. Boyd.

- Hi, Barney.

Hi, kids.

(piano flourish)

- [Barney] Oh, look at him go.

- I didn't know you could play the piano, Mr. Boyd.

- Sure, I can.

I really enjoy it.

- And it looks like Bingo really likes it, too.

- [Mr. Boyd] He sure does, right, Bingo?

(Bingo barking)

(Barney laughing)

(piano continues playing "Bingo")

- [Barney] Oh, nice job.

- [Barney] Oh, oh, nice.

- Yeah, that was so much fun.

- Oh, you play beautifully, Mr. Boyd.

- Well, thank you.

Kids, this is a player piano.

It can play songs all by itself.

- Wow! - Wow!

- Mr. Pennypacker gave it to the park,

but it's not working quite right,

so I've been trying to fix it.

- There's a piano at my school,

but it doesn't look like this one.

- Well, that's because pianos come

in different shapes and sizes.

Pianos that look like this are called upright pianos.

And pianos that look like this are called grand pianos.

- That's the kind we have.

It's great big and it makes a really pretty sound.

- But even though pianos can look different,

they all have black and white keys, like these.

Each key makes a sound.

(piano key vibrating)

Keys at this end of the piano make a low sound.

(piano keys vibrating)

- Oh, and keys at this end of the piano make a high sound,

(piano keys vibrating)

(laughing) like that.

And when you play lots of different keys,

it makes a song.

- I know a song.

I learned it at my piano lessons.

- Ooh, would you please play it for us?

- Okay, see if you know what it is.

- [Barney] Okay. (laughing)

("Row Row Row Your Boat")

- Oh, I know that one, it's "Row Row Row Your Boat."

- You played that very well, Kami,

and if you play it again, we can all sing along.

- Okay, ready, set, go!

♪ Row row row your boat

♪ Gently down the stream

♪ Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily ♪

♪ Life is a but a dream

- Oh, great job. - Great job, Kami.

- That was good.

(Bingo barking)

- Thank you, Bingo.

- I hope you stick with those piano lessons.

- I will!

- Mario and I know a song we can play on the piano together.

- Oh, I'm sure we'd all like to hear it.

- [Kami] Oh, we sure would.

- This is a song called "Chopsticks,"

and when you play it, you hold your fingers out straight,

like real chopsticks.

Ready, Beth? - Uh-uh.

One, two, three, go!

("Chopsticks")

- Oh, well done! - Oh, that was good, Mario.

Good job.

(Bingo barking)

- See, I told you he likes music.

(Bingo barking)

He barks that way every day

when I practice on my piano at home.

- You practice piano every day?

- Oh, I sure do.

- Practicing is what makes Mr. Boyd

such a good piano player.

- Would you please play another song for us, Mr. Boyd?

- Oh, that'd be great. - Oh, yeah, please.

- Oh, I'd be happy to, Mario.

Thank you for asking.

Now, let's see, what shall I play?

- Oh, good question.

There are so many different kinds of music.


Mr. Boyd can play things that sound happy.

(happy music)

- Or I can make music that sounds sort of sad.

(sad music)

- Oh, he can play something exciting.

(exciting music)

- Or I can make music that sounds sort of sleepy.

(lullaby music)

(Mr. Boyd yawning)

- (yawning) Now you're making me yawn.

- (yawning) And me.

- (yawning) And me.

(Bingo yawning)

- Well, I'm not going to yawn, no siree.

I'm not gonna yawn. (laughing)

(Barney yawning)

(kids laughing)

- To help us wake up,

maybe you could play something that's just silly.

- Well, let's see.

(fun piano music)

Something like that? - Uh-huh.

- If you are going to play some silly music,

you should have some silly clothes.

Here you are.

- Well, thank you, Kami.

- [Barney] Those are silly.

- Oh, look at this.

Now, I feel like playing something really silly.

- [Barney] Oh, I can't wait to hear it. (laughing)

(silly music)

Oh, I know this one.

- I guess we better put our costumes back.

- May I take your coat and hat back, Mr. Boyd?

- Well, thank you, Kami, that's awfully nice of you.

(Bingo barking)

- Hey, Bingo, what's all the excitement, huh?

- [Barney] I think Bingo hears someone coming.

- Well, look out, gangway, coming through!

- Oh, BJ. - BJ!

- Oh, hi, Mr. Boyd.

Hi, Barney, hi, guys!

- Hi, BJ. - Hi!

- What's in that heavy box, BJ?

- I don't know.

I ran into Mr. Pennypacker outside,

and he said it was something for Mr. Boyd.

- Uh-huh, Mr. Pennypacker said he'd be sending this over.

There's something very special in this box.

Here, have a look. - Let's see.

- There's nothing in here but rolls of paper.

- And they've got holes in them.

- Hey, don't blame me, they were that way when I got 'em!

- It's all right, BJ, they're supposed to look like that.

- They are?

- Uh-huh, those are piano rolls for the player piano.

Right, Mr. Boyd? - Right.


Each of these rolls of paper has a song.

When you put it in here,

the holes make the piano play that song.

- Oh, man, that is totally cool!

- May we try one, Mr. Boyd?

- Well, sure, we can see

if I've really got this thing fixed.

- How about this one?

- Ooh, "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.

Good choice, Beth.

- Scott Joplin lived a long time ago

and wrote lots of ragtime songs.

- Ragtime? What's that?

- Ragtime is bouncy, happy-sounding music.

- And if you're all ready, we can hear some right now.

- All right. - Oh, that'd be nice.

- I can't wait. - I'd like that.

- [Mr. Boyd] All I have to do is push this lever, and...

("The Entertainer")

- [Barney] Oh, would you look at that?

Look at the keys moving.

- [BJ] They're moving all by themselves!

- [Barney] They sure are.

- Oh, that's cool. - It sure is.

Oh, I like this song, too.

- [BJ] So the holes know just what key to move.

- [Barney] Uh-huh.

(kids chattering)

- That's ragtime?

- That's right, it's happy and bouncy.

- I like this song. - Me, too.

- [BJ] Yeah, I like it.

- [Barney] Whoa.

("The Entertainer" continues) (film whirring)

Oh, Mr. Boyd, the player piano sounds tee-rific!

(kids chattering)

- It sure does.

(comic music)

But it doesn't look so good.

- Oh, I think the piano still needs a little work,

Mr. Boyd. - A little bit.

- Tell you what, if you'd all like to go outside

and play for a while,

I'll let you know when the piano's fixed.

- Oh, sounds good to me.

- Yeah, let's go. - Let's go, guys.

- Bye, see you later. - Bye, Mr. Boyd.

- Bye, Mr. Boyd. - See you later.

- [Barney] Good luck.

- [BJ] I hope Mr. Boyd can fix the piano.

- [Barney] Oh, I'm sure he can.

- Now that the caboose has a piano,

you could practice your lessons here.

- Maybe I will, but on nice days like this,

sometimes I'd rather just play outside.

- It sure would be great if there was a way

to practice piano and play outside at the same time.

- Yeah, it sure would. - That'd be great.

- Well, there just might be a way to do that

if we all use our imaginations.

Whoa. - Wow.

(kids chattering)

- [BJ] Check it out, this is awesome.

- It really works.

I can practice piano and play outside at the same time.

- Yes, you can, and this is a special piano.

You play it with your feet,

(piano keys vibrating)

like this. - Wow!

- And it's so big, I think we can all take turns.

- We can? - Yes, it's great!

(kids chattering)

♪ He played knick-knack on my thumb ♪

♪ With a knick-knack, paddy whack ♪

Good job. (kids chattering)

- Let me try this one.

Listen to that.

- After all that, I need to sit down and rest.

- Well, I'm not surprised.

You were doing some very fancy footwork.

(kids laughing)

- Playing that giant piano was a lot of fun.

- Yeah, but I like other musical instruments, too,

like guitars,

(electric guitar music)

or my favorite, drums. (mimics drums)

(laughing) You know, rock and roll stuff.

- I like rock and roll. - Yeah, that's so cool.

- Well, if that's what you'd like to hear,

I think I know just what we need,

and it's something I've got over here in my closet.

I'll be right back. - Your closet?

- It's over here somewhere.

Let's see here, there's my hockey puck,

my pogo stick, my crockpot, disco ball.

Oh, I was wondering where that was.

Fishing ball, pinball machine.

Oh, here we are. - Wow!

- I just knew I'd find it.

- Whoa, what kind of piano is that?

- It's called an electronic keyboard.

It can make piano sounds, like this.

(kids laughing)

And a lot more.

- I've seen these before.

You could change the sound by pushing buttons.

Here's a picture of a trumpet,

so now it will make trumpet sounds.

(trumpet music)

- Would you listen to that? - Wow!

- This button has a guitar on it.

- Oh, wow. Wow, that's cool.

- Excellent!

Hey, is there a drum button on there?

- Well, I think it's right here.

(laughing) Oh, there it is.

(drums b*ating)

- Oh, yeah, then we are ready to party!

Let's rock and roll!

Uh, I mean, let's rock and roll, please!

- Then here we go. - Oh, yeah.

♪ My parents started teaching me when I just two ♪

♪ All about manners and the right things to do ♪

♪ They told me learn to say thank you ♪

♪ And learn to say excuse me if you happen to sneeze ♪

- [Kami] That was so much fun, you guys.

- Oh man, that was the best.

- Yeah, it really was.

- You know, I'm still a drummer,

but I'm definitely going to learn the piano, too.

- Well, now that there's a piano in the caboose,

you can come and practice every day.

- And maybe Baby Bop would like to learn, too.

I'd be happy to help her.

- Oh, you would?

That's great!
