the story of many the catfish

eddie the catfish was restless and bored

the lake where he lived he'd already

explored

i want some adventure i'm tired of it

here

the same old lake bottom year after year

i'm tired of the water i want to breathe

air

i want to search further and visit up

there

oh careful now eddie warned his good

friend flo

there's places a catfish should not

really go

our moms always tell us don't swim up

too high

there's dangers for fishes called land

air

and sky exactly

said eddie that's just what i mean new

things for exploring

new sites we've not seen but flo was

more cautious

in fact she was nervous she had keen

respect

for the thing called the surface

not eddie oh no he pushed to the limit

he'd poke at the surface he'd touch it

and

skim it what's up there he wondered and

wished he could take

just one little trip past the top of the

lake

now out by the lake two bears had a

match

to see which of the two could land the

best catch

they'd fished all that morning with

netting and string

then they'd scooped with their paws but

not caught a thing

then one of the bears thought he'd be

the winner

if he tempted the fish with a bit of his

dinner

so he stuck some bread on each claw of

his paw

then dipped his arm in the river just by

the shore

well eddie the catfish had never seen

bread

and the look of this morsel fair turned

his head

mmm this stuff looks tasty

said eddie to flow i think i will eat it

but flo shouted

no it might try to hurt you or trap you

or harm you

please eddie use caution this ought to

alarm you

but eddie swam closer to the claws of

the bear

he was sure it was friendly and wanted

to share

don't eddie don't eat a thing you've not

seen why really

you don't even know where it's been then

eddie replied you might call me hasty

but how else will i know if it's yucky

or tasty

before she could stop him he took a big

bite

and quick as a wink he was hauled out of

sight

a terrible silence fell over the lake

eddie had gone oh what a mistake

the bear who had snatched eddie up with

his paw held him quite tightly by the

tips of his claw

and he flopped and he flapped he

couldn't breathe air

he'd found out why catfish aren't happy

up there so was it the end of eddie's

adventures

finishing up between a bear's dentures

not at all you're too small

said the bear in dismay off you go

catfish

back on your way then splash

down he went feeling dazed and unsteady

how flo is relieved to once more see

eddie

now it is wiser his lessons been learned

i won't be so reckless where exploring

is concerned

so be cautious not hasty

we wish you that wish
