thank you
[Music]
welcome to the world of amazing
underground animals
i don't know mad hatter cakes that make
you shrink
who writes this stuff what you reading
henry
it's about a girl who has an underground
adventure
no way this is real that book's a
classic
classic nonsense i mean really follow a
rabbit down a hole and you know what you
really get
what dirty knees are you sure about that
positive well here's your big chance to
find out
oh hey sorry mr rabbit i didn't see you
there
come back
looks like he's late he's late for a
very important date
very funny
[Music]
underground henry that's me all right
follow that rabbit
hey henry you still think that book's so
far-fetched
[Music]
will you just look at this place third
floor low ceilings
this living under land is sure no
wonderland
it can't be that bad henry a lot of
animals make their homes underground
now stand back and
you ought watch watch where he's going
he can't animals who live in darkness
have to rely on senses other than sight
some never see daylight at all you'll
find large animals like aardvarks living
in great big boroughs
and small animals dig tiny burrows which
are called burritos
right no henry but it is true that
earthworms almost never stop tunneling
that's the opposite of some friends of
mine who'd rather borrow a burrow
like from a bad-eared fox who's gone out
hunting all day
only trouble is the fox comes home at
night
this looks like a nice place to spend
the winter everybody's wagging their
tails getting all friendly henry these
are all rattlesnakes
oh let's keep moving shall we to the
pika
like the rattlesnakes pikas also nest
down in the gaps under rocks
but pikas don't nest in groups
because they're so fiercely protective
of their defenseless babies
line their nests with thick layers of
straw enough to fill a whole bathtub
just to keep their offspring comfortable
i guess that makes them
straw babies huh anything you say henry
[Music]
[Music]
huh
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so what happened to that white rabbit
henry who knows
i'll probably never see him again
hey the white rabbit wait
oh where'd he go where'd he go
oh he must have gone through one of
these yes henry
but was it door number one door number
two or door number three
[Music]
uh door number one let's see
what's that a mouse door
mouse door mouse door mouse
just like in my book please
excuse me miss did you see a rabbit go
by
huh huh what did she say
i couldn't hear she's as quiet as a
mouse
how about door number two
whoops excuse me she ought to use that
do not disturb sign
[Music]
so it must be door number three
oh so how am i supposed to get through
there can i suggest
digging it's how other underground
animals get around
digging oh i'd love to but i forgot my
shovel silly me yeah don't worry henry
that never slows down the experts
oh where are these experts when you need
them
right this way henry all you have to do
is scratch the surface and you might
find a mole
they're doing a lot more than just
scratching it
hey where'd they go back underground
moles are among the world's finest
tunnel diggers
i'll say their eyesight is poor
so instead they use their sense of smell
to locate their favorite foods
like slugs and earthworms looks like
dinner's ready
moles can move surprisingly fast when
there's a worm to be had
good thing he's getting the exercise too
he's almost too wide for that tunnel
already ah they can always dig them
wider
that's what the aardvark would do with
its powerful legs and huge claws
it's one of the greatest diggers of all
time
[Music]
what's he digging for termites
once it's found their hideout the
aardvark sticks its snout in deep
and laps them up whole with its long
sticky tongue
[Music]
they must be great at getting the last
cookie out of the jar
look at it go that's amazing
[Music]
in the african wilderness there are lots
of predators but the aardvark can create
a hiding place wherever and whenever it
wants one
[Music]
all right sparky i think you're safe now
aardvarks dig big tunnel systems that
can be as long as a railroad car
[Music]
they forage for food from underground as
well as from above
and they have ultra-sensitive noses for
sniffing out termites right through
walls of earth
those guys are amazing
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
um
henry where are you
coming through
there that's better what happened to
digging
by hand what you'll have to speak
up i can't see a thing
watch where you're going henry
why don't you try using your head good
idea
oh wow where am i
you're in a cave oh i see
i see what do you see
i have no idea but if you turn your head
sideways
it looks sort of like a rabbit those are
stalactites henry
and what's that a stalagmite
cool what's that a white rabbit
ah-ha you come back
oh my headlamp if that goes out i may
never see light again
well you wouldn't be the only animal to
say that henry
the albino crab spends its whole life in
the dark
filtering its food from the underground
river which runs through the cave
i've heard of cavemen but cave crabs are
news to me
wherever there's food to be had henry
you'll find animals adapted to find it
like the cave cricket which has
developed an amazingly acute sense of
touch
ideal for life in a dark cave i wouldn't
want to hurt their feelings
and you know how bats find their way in
the dark don't you
um remind me by using
sound echoes and their incredibly
accurate sense of hearing
of course but how can they live in such
crowded conditions
bat colonies can be huge and in the
western usa
it's not uncommon to find them in their
millions entire families clinging to the
ceilings of caves i thought them
westerners like
wide open faces not bats
and on the cave floor millions more
meat-eating beetles wait for their
chance
to strip a fallen bat to the bone
nice neighbors
oh those bats eat their share of insects
too every evening they leave the cave
and all go out for dinner
i should open a restaurant henry's wild
west
catch it yourself fly bar i'll be rich
i need a million chairs a million forks
a million spoons
several million toothpicks
[Music]
um
[Music]
henry henry it's time for your report on
earthworms
what now yes now
out of my way journal lizard coming
[Music]
through
tonight tapio leaves the top running
and stand up comic cobra gets a glowing
[Music]
review
[Music]
but now our top story
earthworm superhero unearthed at last
mud muncher william worm features
revealed today
that he is in fact captain wigley the
underground
superhero disguised as a garden worm
even to his parents will is actually the
caped crusader responsible for
the early bird not getting the worm
and the triumph of good over weevil
he came to earth in a tin can to escape
an attack of space sparrows
will has been mingling with earthworms
ever since but
as captain wigley soon becoming known
for his amazing feats of strength
despite having no feats himself
captain wiggly is faster than a speeding
snail
able to leave tall daisies in a single
bound
so have no fear the world is now a safer
place
thanks to captain wiggly
more later but first here now the sports
fantasyland one lizards zero rats
but henry there was a tiny bit of truth
mixed in with all that nonsense
really how did that sneak in there
ah maybe it wriggled in like an
earthworm gripping the earth with its
ridges and pushing its head forward you
make it sound
so easy it is for an earthworm
which are kind of heroic the way they
churn the soil for our plants
breaking it up the same way a plow does
allowing water and air to get to the
roots
but worms can't go nearly that fast
true but there are a lot more worms than
tractors out there
and worms almost never stop digging
i'll never call them slimy again but
they are
and their slime helps make excellent
plant food
so they really are heroes
did you know worms breathe through their
skin that means they can get oxygen out
of either the air
the soil or from the water is there
anything a worm can't do
well they're not the best swimmers which
makes them easy prey for a hungry fish
fortunately worms are tough customers
so even if they're bitten in two they
can just grow a new tail
excuse me but that's amazing
curiouser and curiouser there's a whole
city down here
with its own mega apartment buildings
henry it's not polite to stare in
windows
that rabbit must be here somewhere come
out come out wherever you are
nope that's a burrowing owl henry
gotcha and that's an underground wasp
nest
you better buzz off quick
this isn't turning out to be the
hair-raising experience i had in mind
he's behind you say do you smell carrots
i said he's behind you yeah like i'm
gonna fall for that one
now you just missed him
it's true i do
miss him that cute nose and long
fuzzy ears lost and alone in the big
crowded heartless city
i only wanted to say sorry oh brother
henry
it's not so bad termites live in
underground cities in numbers up to 5
million
and you don't see them complaining five
million
and not one of them wants to move out to
the country
termites survive by working together for
the good of the colony
there are soldiers with their huge
fighting jaws
and the small white workers who despite
being blind do all of the building and
digging for the colony
they also look after the queen catching
her eggs as quickly as she can lay them
and that's part of the queen she's huge
yes and she's the mother of every single
termite in the colony
is that the colony that's the mound they
build above it
and workers come out every day to gather
food but actually the heart of the city
lies deep below the surface
i never knew termites were so deep
i'll bet you didn't know about these
guys either they're naked mole rats
maybe he's embarrassed do you think he
wants to make a grass skirt out of that
stuff
they have no fur because they just don't
need it henry
they spend their entire lives in a warm
underground colony
full of tunnels and specialized rooms
they have a toilet room
a dining room and a nursery where the
babies are being fed by their mother the
queen
this queen makes all the babies for the
colony she can produce nearly 50
offspring in a single year
she must love mother's day although
they're mammals
these mole rats behave more like insects
like the termites right and as with many
big families
everybody has to help out with the child
care
what a drag you call that brotherly love
[Music]
but henry maybe that's the only way he
can get the young ones into the dining
room
living underground gives the mole rat
safety from most predators
and although their vision is terrible
their sense of touch is great
add that to their large front teeth
which are perfect for digging
and you'll see they're well adapted for
life in the dark
what a pity with a face that handsome
it's a shame we don't see more of them
henry
why can't i chase something easy like a
snail
oh
did you see that why that weskerly what
you can play at that game i think you
have to say the secret password
what is it if i told it wouldn't be a
secret
what's rabbit for open the door
oh yeah snuffle duffle snuffle
snuffle there goes the secret
where am i i know
i'm in my own basement that's my hat
stop it you're a top hat not a hot hat
maybe there's something inside i'll see
about that
abracadabra abram cabrette
come on out whoever's in my hat
you grab it get your own formal attire
everybody's gotta live somewhere henry
and look where he spilled his raisins
that makes me mad
you go out for a few minutes and what do
you find somebody's moved into your
basement without even asking
there's not a lot of asking permission
in the wild henry
think how you'd feel if you were this
aardvark who goes out at night to hunt
for a few termites
his bro isn't empty for long before
there's a serval sleeping in it
certainly not and if it's not a serval
then maybe it's a bad-eared fox who
drops by for a nap
now that would drive me betty
or a hyena might make itself at home
this is no laughing matter
with the sun just rising now can you
guess what time it is
time to dig a new burrow
i think so but not all secondhand
homeowners are intruders
sometimes holes are left empty
on the high dry plains of south america
burrowing animals like these mars have
to keep moving
always searching for the place where the
grass grows greener
and when they go they leave behind their
burrows for any animal hearty enough to
stay behind
rent free as free as a bird henry
which is just the right price for this
burrowing owl
with a name like that i thought they'd
dig their own burrows
they can but why bother when there's a
marvelous mara hole ready to go
a wise owl knows it's better to save
energy for gathering food
especially with hungry mouths to feed
we've seen owls hyenas aardvarks
it seems there's only one thing you can
be sure of finding when you go looking
underground
uh what's that henry lots and lots of
dirt
[Applause]
hmm
[Music]
more tea bunny henry stop
it's the doormouth so glad you could
make it
what not mad anymore henry how could i
be
mad at her
really i'm having such a nice time with
my underground friends
so there's nothing unusual about that
book
right this is just an ordinary tea party
with ordinary tea and some ordinary cake
and speaking of cake i think this one's
saying
eat me
okay here it goes
whoa i take it back i'm shrinking
see ya henry i guess you'll be staying
down here with your underground animal
friends
anyone got any drink me cola
please
[Applause]
[Music]
you
