The arrival of DC Leila Hussain sets tongues wagging - what brings this big city girl to a sleepy Northern Irish seaside town?

03x04 - Episode 4

Post by bunniefuu »

You're early on the go.

- Um, couldn't sleep.

Family stuff.

- Do you want to talk about it?

Here, wait till you see what I got a
photo of on my way home last night.

The Northern Lights!
- Oh!

- Watch it!

Are you OK?

- It's just my ankle.

Is that what I think it is?

- Hey! You two sure you're OK?

- Er, yeah, it's just my ankle.

It could've been a lot worse if it
wasn't for Taylor.

- The motorcyclist dropped this.

Cannabis.

And a lot of it.

- Which direction did the bike go in?

- Er, up the Promenade just.

- Did anybody get a look at the rider?

- Black leathers and a helmet, same as
any rider.

- Yeah, the bike was kind of unusual.

- It was a trail bike. It had a high
exhaust and an exposed engine.

I'd know it anywhere if I saw it
again.
- OK.

Callum, I want to get these two back
to the station,

see if Taylor can help us identify the
bike.

We need to find out

if this cannabis was intended for sale
in Port Devine. OK?

- Right, boss.
- Right, come on, son.

I'll take the weight.
- I can't.

- Any of these look familiar?
- No.

I think it was an old Axford Flyer.

I know my bikes.

Jake was a real petrolhead.

- Who's Jake?

- Ex-boyfriend.

And the reason I have to sign in here
each week.

And why I'm up in court next Friday.

WHISPERS:
- ATM theft.

- How did things end up with Ash?

Did you get an answer to your
proposal?

- Does Nicole have you spying on me
now?

- She'll only ask when she finds out
I've seen you.

- Tell her it's not a no.

- That's good.

- Aye, but it's not a yes, either.

- That's it! That's the one there!

- An Axford Flyer 500.

I'll run a check for registered owners

and let Ryan know what we're looking
for.

If you think of anything else,

you know where to find us. Right,
folks?

I don't suppose you've seen a bike
like this on your travels?

- I take it that's like the one that
nearly clipped Shay?

Mum'll have him in bubble wrap after
this!
- Yeah.

- Did you see what Taylor posted on
the Commodore's page?

Look.

She thought she saw the Northern
Lights on her way home last night.

- That's not the Northern Lights.
- I know.

You can take the girl out of the city
and all that!

- Speaking of taking a girl out...

..do you fancy maybe getting pizza or
something?

- Sorry, that was smooth!

- It wasn't too bad, was it?

So, what do you reckon?

- Sure.

I'd like that.

- Just a sprain. It's nothing to worry
about.

- KNOCK ON DOOR

- Come on in.
- Hiya.

Is Shay up for giving a statement?
- Mm, OK.

- Yeah, well, as you know, the plants
we recovered

were freshly harvested cannabis,

so we're looking at the possibility of
a local grower.

- Well, if it is, I need to know.

We need that nipped in the bud.

- Yeah, we've already ID'd the bike.

It's rare.

I mean, there's a few in the north

but only one owned locally, by a
George McCready.

- Not Ulster Heavyweight Champion
George McCready?

- Yeah, he used to be a boxer,
apparently.

Callum and Marlene have gone to talk
to him.

- He also used to be the face of our
anti-drugs campaign,

so I'd be surprised if he's involved
in selling cannabis.

- Well, folks aren't always what they
seem. Are you ready?

- Come on, we'll leave you to it.

- OK.

- They treat me like I'm six.

Can I help you?

- Yeah.

We're looking for George McCready.

- That's my dad. Is something wrong?

- Your father owns a 1974 Axford
Flyer, is that right?

- Why? What's happened?

- A bike matching that description

was involved in an incident this
morning.

It's Charlie, right?

- That's right.

- So, is your dad home?

- Er, no.

He's on holiday. Portugal.

- Right.

Could anyone else have been using his
bike around eight this morning?

- Not that I know of.

I mean, I'm just back from camping on
Ballymountain last night.

Hoping to catch the Northern Lights,
but we'd no joy.

- We?

- Me and a mate from uni.

- And what's his name?
- Vince Duffy.

You know, I think Da talked about
selling that bike a while back.

- Sure, we'll take a look anyway.

Might be in there, right?

- Have you a warrant?

- Have you something to hide?

- GARAGE DOOR OPENS

He must have sold it.

Sorry.

Hey, Ash.
- Well.

- There was an incident here this
morning involving a bike

similar to this one.

Did you happen to be in the area
around 7.50am

or see a bike like this?

- You know, I think I have.

It was flying up Chapel Road earlier.

- What time would this have been at?

- Just after eight.

Was someone injured?

- Nothing major.

Taylor and Shay had a near miss.

No engagement ring on the finger yet,
I see!

- Ah, they'll make a detective of you
yet, Constable!

- You know, you're lucky you weren't
hurt.

- Well, did you speak to Marlene about
Ash?

Ash!

How are you?

- Well I've never had an emergency
cheese call-out before.

- The customers can't get enough of
it, can they, Clint?

- No.

They make a brie-line for it when they
come in!

- GIGGLING

- Er, how are you doing, Taylor? I
heard about what happened.

- Taylor's fine.

Have you got any news?

- Well, there's no rush, right?

- You take your time.

It's so romantic, though.

It reminded me of when Clint proposed
to me

in front of the whole bar, too!
- Yeah.

She tamed the Honey Badger!

Have you heard my band, Honey Badger
Blues,

are going back on the road again?

- Clint feels he owes it to his older
brother Sly to go on tour again.

- Yeah, we cut the last tour short
because...

- Because I stole his heart!

- Right!

Well, I best be off.

If you need any more cheese, just let
me know.

- Thinking about it? Poor Marlene.

- Sweetheart, can I have a word?

Have we adopted a family of mice I
don't know about?

- I'm supporting a local business.

And anyway, if Ash decides to marry
Marlene,

well, then she'll be my new best
friend-in-law.

- Speaking of local business, um,

Sly reckons we'll need some cash to
cover initial costs of the tour.

- OK. How much?

- Five grand.

You don't mind, do you?

- Of course not, babe.

Why would I mind?

- Oh, you legend.

- There's no news, before you ask!

- I wasn't going to say a word.

- You'd be the only one, then.

You know, I only wanted her to give me
a key

or leave a toothbrush.

Just a little something to make things
more concrete.

Then this, in front of the whole pub.

Was it me? Did I say something to make
her think...

- What? That you wanted a proposal of
marriage?

- Yeah! It's like she felt she had to.

Like I pressured her into something
she doesn't really want.

- Marlene never does anything she
doesn't really want, trust me.

- Well, she's rushing into this.
- Oh, rushing?

It took her 20 years to come out in
the first place.

- So what if she's trying to make up
for lost time now?

Marry in haste...

- She loves you, Ash.

Talk to her.

There he is.

How did you get on with George?

- Apparently he's on holiday in
Portugal.

- Well, that's according to his son,
Charlie.

- Him?!
- Mm-hmm.
- Did he remember you?
- We had to caution Charlie

a few times when he was younger for
possession.

- His dad offered to front our Don't
Do Drugs campaign as a result.

Charlie's kept his head down since,
though, right?
- Yeah.

- Or he just hasn't been caught.

- Well, his story checks out.

He posted a photo of himself last
night

camping with his mate, Vince Duffy.

- Any luck with the bike?

- According to Charlie, possibly been
sold.

- But it's still insured in George's
name

and there's been no record of any
sale.

- Where does Charlie live?

- Chapel Road.

- Ah! That's where Ash saw the bike
this morning.

- You saw Ash?

- Er, Chapel Road, that's maybe where
the bike is.

- Come on, Ryan, let's get over there.

No answer from Charlie?

- No.

- GARAGE DOOR OPENS

Stop!

Charlie McCready,

I'm arresting you on suspicion of

possession of cannabis with intent to
supply.

- Cannabis? What are you on about?

- You don't have to say anything, but
I must caution you

if you do not mention when questioned

something which you later rely on in
court, it may harm your defence.

If you do say anything it may be given
in evidence.

- Callum!

- Black leathers, like Taylor said.

- So if you're wearing yours,

whose are these?

- Right, this way!

Er, Mr Duffy?

Vince Duffy?

- Aye.

Sorry, am I not allowed to camp here?
I thought it was public.

- No, no, you're fine.

We're looking into an incident

that happened this morning in Port
Devine, around 7.50am.

- I was sound asleep then!

- Well, actually, I was more
interested in Charlie McCready.

He says he was with you all last
night. Is that true?

- Well, we were in different tents, so
I don't know about all night,

but, er, aye, he was camping out with
me, if that's what you mean.

- How do you know Mr McCready?

- Oh, he's an ex-student of mine.

- Where do you teach?

- The agricultural college.

Charlie was specialising in
horticulture,

but he, er, dropped out a few months
back.

- Oh? Did he say why?

- Well, thankfully not the teacher!

Erm, personal reasons, I believe,

but I'm hoping he might reapply at
some stage.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

- Not at all. Thank you.

- So we find freshly cultivated
cannabis.

- And we learn that the ex-user
Charlie knows how to grow it!

Thanks for coming in, Barry.

You said yesterday that Assumpta was
bad news.

What do you mean?

HE SIGHS

- Finn...

It was a long time ago.

My auld memory's not what it was.

- You remembered that she was wild.

Did you know?

Of course you did!

Cos you know everything that goes on
in Port Devine.

Did you know that Assumpta was my real
mother?

Did Concepta tell you?
- No!

I guessed.

Concepta didn't tell anyone she was
pregnant.

Now, that was out of character.

And then she lands back from the
States with you.

- Which is hardly conclusive.

- No, but about ten years after...

..Assumpta arrived out of the blue

and her and Concepta had a most
almighty row.

I could hear them through the walls.

Next day, Assumpta left,

and it was shortly after that

your dad walked out.

Now, I...I suspect that

that's when Gus found out that you
weren't his son

and he...he left Concepta over it.

Concepta won't be too happy about you
getting in contact

with her sister.

- Concepta's not here, Barry.

So I'm going to have to find out the
answers for myself.

I have the right to know who I am!

I need to find Assumpta, Barry.

Are you going to help me or not?

Has Charlie said anything?

- We searched the flat.

There was no drugs,

but we did discover a utility bill in
the name of Anne McCauley.

- Yeah, we looked her up and she's a
named driver on Charlie's car.

We have put an alert for it on ANPR.

- There's photos all over the flat
with Charlie

and a young woman, presumably this
Anne.

- So, the black leathers that Taylor
described

and the ones we found, I mean, they
could be Anne's.

- They're together and he's covering
for his girlfriend?

- Er, CCTV cameras on Shore Road just
picked up Charlie's car.

- But Charlie's here.

- It must be Anne.

- So these leathers are yours?

- I'm sorry.

I panicked.

I'm not insured to ride George's bike.

- So why were you riding it?

- I needed to clear my head.

Charlie was away camping. He had the
car with him.

It was early.

I thought the roads would be empty.

- Where did you go?
- Just a quick loop round the town.

- Do you recognise this?

- Yeah.

Strapped to the bike when I took it
out.

The bag fell when I swerved.

It's not mine.

- You've lied to us from the start.

You said your dad was on holiday
abroad,

but his passport's expired.

- You also said the bike, which was at
the apartment you share

with your girlfriend, had been sold.

- Just so you know, Anne McCauley is
commenting.

She's already admitted that she was
the one driving the motorcycle

this morning that was involved in the
incident.

- When was the last time you used the
bike?

- Is this your bag, Mr McCready?

- Yeah, looks like mine.

- So, you accept that this is your
bag?

Because Anne's confirmed that this bag

was on the Axford Flyer that she took
this morning

and that you were the last person to
use the bike.

- OK.

- So can you please explain to me

why the bag was full of herbal
cannabis when we found it?

- So do you think that he's growing
and she's supplying?

- If that's true then he's going to
need somewhere private

for cultivating the plants.

A grow house of some sort.

- I'm looking at this photo that
Taylor took last night

of the Northern Lights.

- Those aren't the Northern Lights.
- Let me see.

Maybe it's aliens.

The truth is out there, Marlene.

- Ha! I never took you for an X-Files
fan.

- I'm more of an Agent Scully fan.

- What is it about you and women in
authority, eh?

You'd better watch yourself, Jo.

- Oh, don't you worry, I can handle
him!

- And now I'm thinking...

..lights.

- A grow house needs lights.

- So, er, did you see Finn, then? Did
he tell you all?

Ach, they know about it.

- Yeah.

He wants to, er, see Assumpta.

- Well, he has questions...about her,
about his father.

- Look, Gran lied to him and he wants
the truth.

And you know Dad - he won't stop till
he gets it.

- Well, as long as you're all right
anyway, young fella.

- THEY CHUCKLE

- Hey, did they find the motorbike
rider?

- I don't know.

It's a rare bike, though.

Apparently George McCready owns one.

- George?
- I know, blast from the past.

I haven't seen him in years.

- Yeah, it's been a while for me too.

- It was out past the Glen.

Are you sure it wasn't the Northern
Lights?

- No, we don't think so. Sorry.

- Thanks, Taylor.

- Was that about the court case?
- No.

They wanted to know where I saw those
lights last night.

I will need some time off, though, if
that's OK?

- Of course. We can manage.

- Clint will be away.

- Just focus on you.
- Thanks, Nicole.

You're so sorted.

If it was my boyfriend going off with
his band,

I'd be a bag of nerves.

Mind you, who's going to be throwing
themselves at 50-year-old

country and western singers?

Present company excluded.

- 50? He's 45!

And he's not my boyfriend, he's my
husband.

Anyway, why would you go looking for
burgers

when you've got steak at home?

- Aye, but sometimes you really just
fancy a good quarter-pounder.

- Clint?
- Yes, love.

- I've been thinking about the tour.

And Taylor's reminded me that her
court case is coming up.

And if she goes to jail, we'll be
short-staffed.

- Thanks for your concern!

- Also, the menu needs redesigning.
- What's wrong with the menu?

- Well, what if someone ordered a
burger

but what they really wanted was steak?

But they didn't know that they wanted
steak

because steak wasn't on the menu?

- But there is steak on the menu.

- I just don't think this is a good
time for you to be going away.

- You what?

What just happened?

- Hey.

Any plans for tonight?

- Is your other boyfriend too busy?

I heard you on the phone to him last
night.

- We never said that this was
exclusive.

- Look, I thought you were my
girlfriend.

- You do not want me to be your
girlfriend.

Trust me, I'm a nightmare.

And...I don't want you to be my
boyfriend.

- Right.

So we're just friends, then?
- Yeah, friends...

..with benefits.

- "Benefits" benefits?

- Er...

MACHINE WHIRS

- That sounds like a generator.

- Look.

Bingo.

The lights from Taylor's photo.

- I'll get CSI down here and call
Ryan.

He can hold the scene until it's
cleared.

- Barry?

What are you doing here?
- I'm looking for George.

- Well, it'll have to wait. We need to
search the premises.

- I have the keys here, Sarge.
- OK.

Look, George isn't here.

Charlie claims he's on holiday.

- Sure, George is so sick he can
hardly get out of bed,

never mind travel.

- Ryan, Barry says George is sick.

Can you got a hold of Siobhan?

- Hello, George.

How're we doing?

- George McCready has multiple
sclerosis and you never told me?

- He wanted it kept quiet.

George is a proud man.

He made me swear not to tell anyone.

- When was that?

- When he did that "Don't Do Drugs" ad
for us.

- Oh, yeah, when he turned up drunk?

- He wasn't drunk! That was the
symptoms of his illness!

If I'd known how bad it had gotten, I
would have said.

- When did you see him last?

- A...few months back.

I mean, I've called since, but, er,
that girl, Anne,

she said he was out with Charlie.

- Anne McCauley? What, she was here?

- Yeah, I think she was helping
Charlie with his dad.

- Well, I found this.

It looks home-made.

- Cannabis oil?

- It helps relieve the spasms in MS.

Now, they must have been desperate to
keep George's illness hidden

if they have been medicating him with
ill*gal drugs.

- Why? There's no shame in being sick.

- Well, you can ask him. He's awake.

- OK.

George.

We need to speak to you about this.

And about Charlie.

- He's a good lad.

The best.

- Did Charlie make this for you?

- I used to be that man, hanging on
the wall there.

- You're still that man, George.

- I'm done, Barry.

I can't win it.

I see that.

But Charlie can't.

At his age, I was living my life.

He's given up his.

I'm a burden to him now.

- Why didn't you ask for help before?

- Because I had my boy.

And my pride.

That was enough.

But I was selfish.

I shouldn't have asked him...

..to...

- Grow cannabis for you?

- It was so unfair on him.

- HE SNIFFS

When we lift prints from the grow
house, Charlie,

I'm betting we find yours all over it.

- My colleagues have also seen your
father.

- Is he OK? Is someone with him?

- Yeah, Dr O'Hare's treating him.

Did you make this for your dad?

- It's purely medicinal.

He was given some over in London by a
friend

when he was first diagnosed.

When he came home, he needed more.

- And could he not have got it on
prescription from a local doctor?

- Can you imagine if the press found
out that George McCready

was using cannabis?

And I owed it to him.

- Why?

- After my mum died, I got into
trouble.

My dad was always there for me.

No matter how many times I let him
down.

- Getting him help wouldn't have been
letting him down, Charlie.

- He's my da.

I told him I'd take care of him!

Just like he did for me.

I promised him, "I'm fighting this
with you."

- Look, if all of this was for your
dad, why did you grow so much?

- As his illness got worse, I needed
to keep refining the dose,

grafting different strains in order to
keep it effective.

I only held on to all the old plants
in case I ever needed them again.

- So you weren't planning on selling?

- No! Of course not.

It was all for him.

- Then why did Anne have such a large
quantity in that bag this morning?

- Honestly, I don't know.

It's what made me love Charlie.

How caring he was for his daddy.

- But?

- He gave up his course to look after
George.

I tried my best to support him, but...

..Charlie didn't want anyone knowing
about his dad,

so we couldn't even ask for help.

We started running out of money.

- And what about the apartment? The
bike?

- It's all George's.

Besides, Charlie wouldn't let them go
anyway.
- Why not?

- Because it'd be him admitting his
dad will never use them again.

- Did he want to sell the cannabis?

- He wouldn't hear of it.

- So what happened?

- I did it without him knowing.

- Where were you taking the drugs this
morning?

- Or who were you taking them to?

- A friend...

..from uni.

- Vince Duffy.

- George McCready's son been arrested!

- Who's George McCready?

- Only a boxing legend.

- Until he ruined it.

Some people should know when to
retire!

- Maybe he wanted to keep going.

Grab every chance.

Chase all his dreams.

- Are we still talking about a boxer?

- Well, maybe he had money of his own
to chase those dreams.

- Or a wife who supported him, helped
him become a legend.

- We're not, then.

- A local legend.

At least he knew to stay in Port
Devine. His home.

- Don't mind them.

- So, you made it home in one piece
then?

Oh, we met last night at the campsite.

- Oh, of course. Sorry.
- Er, Vince.

At least you saw the lights last
night.

I spotted your photo on the bar's
social page.

Where did you see them?
- It was up past the Glen.

But don't waste your time.

It wasn't them, apparently.

- Hey, Taylor!

Steak for a special?

- Don't ask!

- I heard you got a date for your
court appearance.
- Yeah.

When I think of everything with dad
and that...

- Taylor, it took a lot of guts for
you to stay in Port Devine

after your dad left.

And I'm really glad you did.

And your lights photo was invaluable!

- I'm such a townie.

Vince, a guy from the campsite last
night,

was just in asking where I filmed it.
- Vince?

Not Vince Duffy?

- I spoke to a colleague in organised
crime.

Vince Duffy is known to them.

- Let me guess. Drugs offences.

- No convictions, but his name has
come up during a few operations.

- I'd say he knew exactly what
Taylor's lights are

and now he knows where to find them.

- Ryan's still holding the scene out
there on his own.

We need to tell him to stay out of
sight.

- Yeah. I'm on it.

- OK, let's get going!

SIREN BLARES

- It's Ryan.

Hello?

Yeah, OK.

Vince has arrived but he's not alone.

There's three men with him.

- Tell Ryan to keep eyes on and not to
engage.
- OK.

Right, c'mon, that's it.

- CLATTERING

- Clear out!

- Police! Stay where you are!

Wait there! Wait there! Do not move!

Police! Stay where you are! Stay where
you are!

Spray!

- Aargh!

- Papa delta eight to control.

Back-up required. Over.

- Hey! Stop now!

- Police!

- Hey, give it up!

- Whoa!

- Police! Stop!

- SIREN APPROACHES

- I'm arresting you for conspiracy to
sell cannabis.

You don't have to say anything but I
must caution you

if you do not mention when questioned
something which

you later rely on in court, it may
harm your defence.

If you do say anything it may be given
in evidence.

- Head down.

I'm sorry, Callum.

I was meant to be keeping an eye out,
but he spotted me.

- Look, we've all done it. Just wait
for backup in future, OK?

- Hey.

Well done.

- So when did you know that Anne
wouldn't be coming with

the drugs you offered to sell for her?

- I don't know what you're talking
about.

- Then why did Anne McCauley text you
at 8am this morning,

"I've lost the whole bag. Sorry, I
don't think this is a good idea"?

- I, er...

..I don't remember that.

- Well, that's funny.

Because at 8.05am you replied with, "I
need those.

"I've promised them to someone who
doesn't take excuses."

We've printed out all the messages we
downloaded from her phone

to refresh your memory.
- Yeah, then at 9am,

"Tell me where the stash is and I'll
collect it myself."

- At 11.25am, "Tell me where the stash
is

"or I'm going to the papers about
Charlie's old man."

At 1.30pm...

- Yeah, OK. You've made your point.

- You weren't helping Anne or Charlie.

You were helping yourself.

- And you're keeping some very bad
company, Vince.

- Yeah, company that would give you up
in a heartbeat.

You're an amateur to them.

- VINCE SIGHS

- Look...

..when I heard what Charlie was doing

I figured we could all make a few
quid.

He was growing the stuff anyway.

I owed that lot in the van. This would
help clear the debt.

- You exploited two people who thought
you were their friend.

- Well, you saw those guys.

You know what they would do if I
didn't deliver?

- Well, what do you expect?

- Look, why don't you start by telling
us who they work for.

VINCE SIGHS

Anyone for the Commodore?

PHONE PINGS

- Oh, oh, oh! Ash wants to see me!

- Here we go!

- Good luck, Marlene.

- Maybe see yous all up there later,
yeah?

- You go on, Ryan. We'll, erm, wrap up
here.

- And then there were two.

- Yeah, just not exclusively.

- Look, if you're not up for this,
it's fine.

- No, hang on. So I could have other
friends with benefits too?

- Yeah, of course.

If you wanted.

- Will we give the Commodore a miss?

- Hey, Finn.

Hey, I'm glad I caught you.

Here.

This is the last number anyone had for
Assumpta in the States.

She may not even be there.

- Thank you.

- Can we talk about this?

- There's nothing more to say.
- Ach, this is my chance

to make things right with my brother,
Nicole.

- How? By getting away from here?

- What do you mean? This is my home.
But, you know...

..but the buzz of being on the road.

It's, like, you know the audience love
you!
- I love you!

Is that not enough?
- Of course it's enough.

- Then why do you have to go?

- I can't let Sly down again.

- What, like you did when you married
me?

- Oh, that's not what I meant.
- That's exactly what you meant.

You know what? You're not going!

- I am.

- Not with my money, you're not.

- Hi.
- Hi.

- You forget how nice this is when you
see it every day.

- Sometimes you have to take a step
back to see the way forward.

- Mm-hm.

- I have something for you.

As a sign of my commitment.

- WHISPERS: Wow.

- Of course I'll marry you!

- THEY LAUGH

- Barry!
- Oh, Barry!
- Barry!

- Time for champagne?

BARRY LAUGHS

- Congratulations, the pair of yous!

- Actually, erm...

..OK, I, erm, I... I want to do this
properly.

So I would like you to marry us in
your church.

- Me?

- Yes, you.

Why, is...is...is that a problem?

- But-but I-I-I-I can't do it.

- Why not?
- Why...

I...I never thought you meant...

..like a...a real wedding, in a
church.

- Right.

- Marlene!
