[BATTLE MUSIC]

OSCAR [VO]: You've heard of him, Steve.

He's known as the Onassis
of organized crime.

His name is Joseph Wrona.

This morning at 5:00 AM,
just over the Hungarian border...

he's taken delivery of a perfect plate...

designed for the printing
of American $20 bills.

The plate is not a counterfeit.
It's the real thing.

Stolen from the Denver Mint.

Mr. Branakowski,
we have a deal, sir.

OSCAR [VO]: If Wrona's allowed
to get away with that plate...

he can bring chaos
to the U. S. economy.

You've gotta get that plate, Steve.

You've gotta get it,
and get out.

[METAL CREAKING]

[ALARM BELL RINGS]

Turn around!
He's got the plate!

He's gone!

I saw his face.

Who is he?

How could he have gotten into the truck?

I don't know...

but if it takes the rest of my life,
I'll find him.

And when I do...

he's a dead man.

FLIGHT COM:
lt's looks good at NASA One.

B- 52 ]PILOT:
Roger.

BCS Arm switch is on.

FLIGHT COM:
Okay, Victor.

B-52 PILOT:
Landing Rocket Arm switch is on.
Here comes the throttle.

Circuit breakers in.

STEVE:
We have separation.

B-52 PILOT:
Inboard and outboards are on.

I'm comin' forward with the side stick.

FLIGHT COM:
Looks good.

PILOT:
Ah, Roger.

STEVE:
I've got a blowout in damper three.

SR-71 PILOT:
Get your pitch to zero.

STEVE:
Pitch is out. I can't hold altitude!

B-52 PILOT: Correction. Alpha Hold is off.
Threat selector is emergency.

STEVE: Flight Com. I can't hold it!
She's breaking up! She's breaking...

ANNOUNCER:
Steve Austin. Astronaut.

A man barely alive.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him.

We have the technology.

We have the capability
to make the world's first bionic man.

Steve Austin will be that man.

Better than he was before.

Better, stronger, faster.

[PHONE BUZZES]

Hello, Oscar.

I turned around and you were gone.
Where'd you go?

I've got a big real estate deal
to take care of.

Real estate? Well, that can wait.

The Secretary of the Treasury wants to
give you a plaque for recovering that plate.

The ceremony's gonna be
tomorrow morning.

Well, tell the Secretary I'd be
happy to accept that citation...

in about two weeks.

Where are you, anyway?

I left all the information with your office.

It's always good
to talk to you though, Oscar.

[DIAL TONE]

You know,
I really like this old place.

In fact, when I was a kid I used to
go fishing down at that creek there...

with Old Man Marsden
before he passed away.

He was a fine man.
I knew him well.

I wanna take a look
at the back again.

Well, you'll be getting
a lot of good acreage here...

but the house needs some
paint and fixing up.

That's okay.
I'm pretty good with my hands.

Good enough.

I've got the escrow papers
right here.

All I need is your signature.

It sure is going to be something now
to have you back in town now, Steve.

Folks will be tickled pink.

And to think I sold you the place.

Let's go on inside
and get this thing done, huh?

Oh, Mr. Ellerton, I'd appreciate it
if you keep this a little secret...

until I've had a chance
to fix the place up.

Oh, yeah.

And, uh, not even my Mom and Dad.
I wanna surprise them.

You can count on me, Steve.
Mum is the word. Mum.

Good.

[BIONIC SOUND EFFECT]

Good ol' Mr. Ellerton.

"Mum is the word."

Steve! Oh, Steve!

You know, you're perfectly awful.

Hi, pretty lady.
Hi, son.

Hi, Dad.
Really good to have you home.

And buying a ranch
in your own hometown.

And we have to hear
about it from John Ellerton.

Listen, if you can take the time
to call the President...

while you're walking
around on the moon...

you can surely take the time
to call your folks.

Look, I wanted to surprise you guys.

I know.

I just couldn't wait to see you.

Nice, Steven.

Looks like you're gonna need
some help fixing up this place.

Oh, I think I can
handle it myself.

Well, what about that stump?

Can't take that out
by yourself, for sure.

Tell you what...

bring a chain around, we'll pull it out
with the truck tomorrow.

I'd love to help you clean up the inside.

Now wait a minute.
That's awful sweet of you two, but...

Oh, now, he's just as stubborn
as ever, now, isn't he, Jim?

He honestly thinks he can clean
this place up faster without us.

Come on. Let me show you around.

Welcome home, dear.

You'd never believe
the price of wallpaper.

Did we ever see
"Gone With the Wind"?

Oh, Jim, we saw it five times.

Uh-huh.

Hey, that's looking good.

Glad you think so.

Which one you gonna
start on, Steve?

Uh, that one there.

Good.

What do you think, Mom?
How's it look?

Oh, that looks fine.

Oughta brighten
the place up a bit.

If you wanna brighten me up,
a little lunch.

Soon as I finish mixing this up.

Always did like your
home cooking.

Do I still get to lick the bowl?

What, dear?

What kind of cake is this?

Ow. Not good. It's terrible.

Of course it is.
It's wallpaper paste.

Not bad for wallpaper paste.

[LAUGHS]

I need some more paper.

Oh, not that top one.

There's something in that
I want to show Steve.

Oh, yeah.

Here's a picture of that Air Force plane
crashed last week.

Do you know either
of the pilots, Steve?

Yeah. Both of them.

Mmm.

When I think of all
the planes you tested.

It was a miracle you walked away
from that horrible crash.

Well, I guess I was lucky, Mom.

Oh, but that's not the
reason I saved it.

Look. Who else do you think
is in town?

Jaime Sommers.

Remember Jaime?

[NOSTALGIC MUSIC]

Jaime.

[LIGHT MUSIC]

SCOREKEEPER: Love-15.

Service.

She's terrific, huh?

Yes, she sure is.

Did you know she used to
go to our high school?

Love-30.
Yeah, I know.

Boy, I just know she's gonna beat
Billie Jean King at Forest Hills next time.

All she has to do is tighten down
her backhand a little.

Boy, Jaime's the most important person
that ever came out of our town.

Except for that astronaut guy.

Boy, he's terrific.

Well, bye. See you later.

Good bye.

COACH: Great shot!
Nice backhand.

SCOREKEEPER: That's game!

Hey, sweetheart.
You give lessons?

Steve! My... well, uh, don't go away.
I'll be right back.

Okay?

Hi.

Hi, Jaime.

Oh, boy.
I'm so glad to see you.

Me too, you.

Who would've thought that skinny, little ninth
grader I used to bat tennis ba*ls with...

would become one
of the top ten lady tennis pros?

Top five.

And just as modest as ever.

And you still know how to
sh**t me down, don't you?

Can I walk you home?

Oh, you bet.

Let me have that.

Okay.

You know, you look great.

Well, I always sort of liked
the way you look too.

Flattery will get you everywhere.

Oh, I know.

What brought you home?

I heard you were here.

Liar.

I never could put you on
without you knowing it, huh?

What brought you home,
really, Steve?

Well, I decided I needed
a place to come to...

when the big, bad world
get heavy out there.

So I bought the old
Marsden Ranch.

You did?

Well, me and the bank.

Well, that's great!

You know it's really fun,
comfortable talking with you.

You know that?

Well, I was just gonna say
the same thing.

Oh, come on.

No, I mean that.

You know, playing the pro-tennis circuit
is a lot of hard work.

And it's too much travel.

And it's having to make
conversation with a lot of people...

that are really okay,
but they don't mean anything to me.

Yeah, I feel the same way
when I'm doing my thing.

Yeah. Guess that's what it is.

You know something, Steve?

In the last hour while we're
walking around town...

I haven't been lonely at all.
Why is that?

Well, I could probably explain that
over a pizza at the Capri.

The Capri? Our old haunt?
Yeah.

That would be gr... oh.
I can't. I have a date.

A what?

A date.

Ah, Jaime,
I wouldn't tempt fate, you know.

I mean, it's been almost four years
since we last saw each other.

I mean, who knows
when we might meet again?

So, uh...

break the date, sweetheart.

[HORN HONKS]

Ah, that's David Welsh.

And ever since
we met in Brussels...

he sort of follows me around
from place to place...

and, uh, well
he's really very nice.

You know. I don't suppose
you'd like him at all.

No.
No.

Well, I can't break that date, Steve.

You mean, you're tossing me
over for him, huh?

No. No.

Will you call me tomorrow, please?

Okay?

Kay.

Bye.

Bye.

You know, Steve...

you and Jaime were
always so close, I...

I kind of expected...

Expected what, Mom?

Well, I guess you were too close
to really fall in love with her.

My mother the matchmaker.

I think I oughta go off to the drugstore,
get some tobacco.

Be right back.

Hey, I'll go with you.

Oh, fine.
You can mail a letter for me.

Now you boys behave yourselves.
Be back by 10:00.

I figured we'd do
a little h*nky tonkin'.

Hey, Colonel Austin.
How's it going?

Hey, Danny.
Good to see you.

I'm sorry to drag you
out of the house...

but I guess you're aware.

Your mother's decided
you and Jaime should get married.

[LAUGHS]

It always tickles me...

when I think back on how you
asked me to marry your mother.

Well, I just tired of you all going out
every Saturday night...

and leaving me with a babysitter.

Lot of memories here
for you, too, huh?

Yeah, there sure are.

Great thing about growing up in a small
town, it gives you a real sense of belonging.

Funny, though...

how most folks don't realize
how much some things mean to them...

till they've gone away.

I'll be right back, Steve.
Okay.

[BIONIC EYE SOUND EFFECT]

No.

No.

No, none of these are him.

Those are all the Interpol agents.

Then get me the photo file
of all the American agents.

That's going to cost you
a great deal of money.

Spend it.

I intend to see
he never causes trouble again.

MOTHER: Steve?

Steve.

Did Jim leave yet?

Huh? Oh, I'm sorry.
I didn't hear you, mom.

Did Jim leave yet?

Uh, yeah, I think so.

Oh, poop. I wanted him
to get a couple of men...

to help lift the refrigerator out
so I can clean behind it.

Oh, I can slide it out for you.

Oh, heavens no.
No, it has to be lifted.

Or it'll scratch up the floor
something awful.

I'm gonna go see if I can catch him.

Well, guess I'll just have to
call him later.

Steve.

I told you not to move that.
You'll get the floor all...

There's not a mark on it.

How could you possibly have lifted
this heavy monster all by yourself?

You always told me if I eat my vegetables,
I'd grow up to be big and strong.

Steve, don't you know if you lift anything
heavy like that you'll hurt yourself?

Oh, no, it wasn't heavy at all.

MOTHER: Well, you certainly
haven't eaten much breakfast.

I lost my touch?

Oh, no, no.

I guess I'm not hungry, that's all.

Say, mom, uh...

when Jaime comes to town,
does she, uh...

Does she spend much time with you?

Always.

Does she ever ask about me?

Always.

Is it out of courtesy, or—-

Or what?

I don't know.

You know, I don't feel like
working at the ranch today.

I think I'll take a walk.

Down to the lake.

How'd you know?

How'd you know?

You're a special lady.

See you later.

Okay.

[BIONIC EYE SOUND EFFECT]

[BIONIC SOUND EFFECT]

Reach for the sky, sweetheart.
I got you covered.

HI.
Hi.

BOY: Hey, look out!

Sorry, mister.
My friend overthrew it.

Oh, that's okay.
Thanks.

Come on.
Yeah.

Well, fancy meeting you here, sir.

Well, I came out here
looking for you.

Yeah, well I have to confess your mother
called me and told me you'd be here.

She's incredible.

Yes, but she knows me.

'Cause I was out of that house
in a flash just like that.

It's so nice to see this old guy again.

Yeah, he sure
listened to us talk plenty.

Yes.

BOY: Hey, Dale!

BOY: Let's set up for a kick! I'll kick!

Looked like you were having a lot of fun
with old whats-his-name last night.

What? Are you spying on me?

Yeah.

Why?

I was jealous.

BOY: Throw it! Throw it!

Ah, you mean, jealous jealous?

Yeah, I mean jealous jealous.

Well, that's the nicest thing
I've heard all day.

Oh.

Sorry, mister.

By the way, where is old
whats-his-name?

Out picking Forget-Me-Nots?

Steve, you really are jealous.

Well, it's over with
whats-his-name and me.

Really?

Yes, really?

Well, that's good.

No, I never really cared
for him much, anyway.

So what do we do now?

Well, I guess we get serious.

Why do you suppose
we never get serious before?

It's too scary.

We did get serious once, remember?

We did?

Yeah, it was a long time ago.

It was at your Senior Class
New Year's Eve party.

Oh, that's right. I took you and all the guys
teased me about robbing the cradle.

What? I was... I was a Freshman.

And that's when you kissed me.

That was serious.

You're right.

I never have forgotten that kiss.

BOY: To the right!
Go long! Throw it!

Ugh.

Sorry, mister.

Hey, guys. How'd you like to go out
for a nice long pass, huh?

Sure!

Take off.

[BIONIC SOUND EFFECT]

[BALL WHISTLES THROUGH AIR]

Wind must've caught it.

Now about that kiss
we were talking about.

What about it?

No more footballs.

[POP MUSIC]

I It always is when friends meet again I

I But lately, it's gone flat for me, Jaime J‘

J‘ I don't like seeing you now and then I

J‘ Our friendship is finished I

J‘ That's tnie J‘

I But there's hope,
a way to make it through I

J‘ Because, sweet Jaime,
I love you I

J‘ I never wanna say goodbye to you I

J‘ Sweet Jaime, I'll love you foreverJ‘

J‘ I know we'll never part I

J‘ I love you like I loved no otherJ‘

I Make room for me in your heart I

It's so good, isn't it Steve?

Mmm. It's almost
as good as my mom's.

Not the pie, dummy. Us.

And you know what, if you don't
tell mom, I think it's even better.

Yeah?

You know, I'm gonna miss you,
you little devil when you're in Barcelona.

Yeah?

Yeah. Do you have to go
to every tournament?

It's the life of a lady pro.

And the week after that,
it's the Melbourne Invitational...

and the week after that,
it's Forest Hills, and then I go...

The week after that,
it's the South African...

[PHONE RINGS]
And then... and the phone rings.

Jaime's pie shop.

OSCAR: Well, how about it?

What about what?

You know what.

When are you getting back here
and coming back to work?

Oscar, give me a break, will ya?

Don't you understand I'm trying to
build a meaningful relationship?

[SILENTLY]
That's right.

Henry Kissinger built up a meaningful
relationship and he still gets his work done.

Yeah, but he gets paid more.

Look, I'll call you back, okay?

Steve, it's serious.

We're getting some unsettling
reports about Joseph Wrona.

I'll worry about it later.
Going skydiving today.

I'll call you back, Oscar.

[DIAL TONE]

Now you see? Your people pull at you
like the pro-circuit pulls at me.

I don't know if this thing's
gonna work with us.

We're gonna have
so many problems.

Yeah, but who doesn't?

I mean, it will work
if we wanna make it work.

What kind of a life
are we gonna have with each other?

What kind of a life are we
gonna have without each other?

[BIONIC EYE SOUND EFFECT]

[LOUD RIPPING SOUND]

[LOUD CRASH]

STEVE: Jaime!

How is she?

It's amazing she's alive at all.

Her legs have so many breaks,
we still haven't counted them all.

The hemorrhaging
from her right ear...

seems to indicate interior damage
to the cochlea and Corti.

And her right arm
and shoulder are completely...

I'm sorry, Colonel.

We'll try to save her,
but there's only so much we can do.

Maybe someday we'll be able to
repair broken bodies like hers.

Can I see her a minute?

Sure.

[STEADY BEEP]

Uhh...

God, I messed up, huh?

Hey, cut out that kind of talk.
You're gonna be okay.

It's so... over, eh?

Jaime, there may be a way.

Will you let me try?

Will you trust me?

Uh-huh.

Jaime?

OSCAR: Steve, it's just not possible!

You know that's not true, Oscar.

Because I'm living proof
that it is possible!

I'm not talking about technology!

We can put Jaime back together again.
I think it's possible.

But there are other considerations.

Oscar, I asked you up here
to help me.

Now so far, all I've gotten is
a handful of red tape!

Now there's a woman in there
with no hearing in one ear.

An arm and both legs
crushed beyond repair...

And you... you have the power
to put her back together again...

just like you did me.

Bionic limbs cost millions of dollars.
You understand?

Millions of dollars!

I've gotta get Rudy Wells and
the whole bionic team up here.

How am I gonna
justify the expense?

Well, how did you justify me?

That was different!

There was a need!

There still is, Oscar.

You know how they're
always looking for a new angle.

New device?

I mean, think of what an asset
Jaime could be to us.

And her cover as a tennis pro,
I mean, it's perfect.

There are places that she could get into
that I could never get into.

And she's got the head for it.
She's well adjusted, she's classy...

Steve, you're in love with her!

What's that got to do with it?

Everything!

You'd sell your soul for her.

You'd do anything.
You'd commit yourself to her.

But someday... someday
I'm gonna say, I need her.

I'm gonna need her for a job.
And you know what you're gonna do, pal?

You're gonna change your mind.

No,
... I won't change my mind, Oscar.
I swear it.

Well, what about Jaime?

OSCAR: What does she say?

She's dying, Oscar.

She put her life into my hands.

I'm putting it into yours.

You're the only one that can help.

Will you help me?

Please?

[STEADY BEEPING]

Rudy?

She's responding wonderfully.

Even better than you did.
I'm really amazed.

Well, that's great.
I've gotta say.

Thanks.

She'll be coming around
by morning.

Maybe you better tell her
before she finds out for herself.

About the bionics?
Mmm-hmm.

Don't you thing you better tell her, Rudy?

Well, I could, but I think it'd be much more
appropriate if she heard it from you.

I guess you're right.

I thought I was dead, Steve.

No way.

I feel so... I don't know.

My right arm looks alright.
What'd they do?

Oh, it's more than alright.

You see, Jaime,
this is a very special hospital.

They can rebuild you.

Even better than you were.

Rebuild?

It's a brand new science
called bionics.

The biology of your own body
controls electronics in your arm.

You mean my right arm isn't my arm?

Oh, yes it is now.

It's wonderful, Jaime.
It's like nothing you've ever seen before.

And once we've trained it,
you'll never be able to tell it from your left.

Believe me.

It looks alright, huh?

Oh, it looks great.

I guess I'm lucky.
I could've lost my left arm, too.

Or my legs.

Steve, I wanna see my legs.

Sure.

Whew. Thank God.

I thought for a minute I remembered...

What's wrong, Steve?
I can't move my legs.

They're bionic too.

Oh, my God.

Jaime.

What did you let them do to me?

Look, I know how you feel.

No you don't.
Why did you let them do that?

Jaime, trust me. Please trust me.

I don't wanna be a freak!

Jaime...

Why didn't you just let me die?
For God's sake!

Jaime, don't tell me about wanting to die.

Oh.

Look at me.

Look at me!

[METAL CREAKING]

I know how tough it is.

I went through exactly
what you're going through.

Your arm is bionic?

And both legs.

And an eye.

An eye?

Which one?

You tell me.

I can't.

Now will you trust me?

I'll be here to help you, Jaime.
Every step of the way.

But you've gotta try.
You've gotta want to live, Jaime.

You hear me?

Yes.

Well, there she is.

Hi.
Hi.

You ready for the first try?

I guess so.

Let's get on with it.

Easy does it.
That's it. Just try to stand.

Easy now.

RUDY: Take your pick.

Which ever one
you want to move first.

Hey, wonderful. Bravo.

Good.

You alright?

That's one small step for Jaime.

Don't kid yourself.
That was a giant leap.

Come on.

Try it again. Come on.

Other one first.

Oh, how pretty.

Hi.
Hi.

Steve, you think I'll be able to play
the violin when my hand gets better?

Sure.

Oh, that's so great, because
I've never been able to play it before.

Well, there's no doubt about it.
You're getting better.

[LOUD POP]
Ah!

How did that happen?
Yuck.

I needed some adjustments
at the beginning, too.

But you better have
Rudy check that arm.

Okay.

I guess they just don't make 'em
like they used to.

What's the matter?

Well, I guess you won't be able
to look at me like that...

with you knowing
how much of me isn't me.

I suppose, uh, you'll feel the same way
every time you look at me.

What are you talking about?
I love you.

I mean, I don't care
if you're bionic and...

Game point.

Besides, she was bowlegged.
Come on.

[TEST TONES PLAY]

Hey, Rudy. How's it...

Shh.

We're calibrating her bionic ear.

[HIGH TONE PLAYS]

[HIGH TONE PLAYS]

[HIGHER TONE PLAYS]

[INAUDIBLE TONE PLAYS]

[CLICKS TONE OFF]

Why did she nod?
There wasn't a tone.

Oh, yes there was,
but we can't hear that high.

Okay, honey, why don't you just take
your headset off and rest for a while.

How sensitive is her hearing?

Well, I'll tell you what.

Why don't you just turn your back
and whisper something.

Part of a nursery rhyme, or anything.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

And Rudy wells and his bionics men,
put Jaime and Steve back together again.

[GIGGLES]
Hey, how about that?

[LAUGHS]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

[TREAD MILL WHIRRS]

[DYNAMIC MUSIC]

How fast was I going?

Well, not bad for an amateur.

About 35.

Oh, is that all?

Well, at least you're
finally in the top two.

You know, it might not be so bad
being the bride of Frankenstein.

You thinking about getting married?

No, actually, I was thinking
it might be kind of nice being bionic.

Oh, I see.

Well, it might not be
such a bad idea getting married.

Yeah, but, you know, Jaime,
you gotta wait to be asked.

Yeah, right.

So will you?

Will I what?

Marry me?

I thought you'd never ask that.

Come on.

Pretty good, Steve.

Well, I can't believe it.

I never thought I'd see Steve Austin's
name in a wedding announcement.

You know, Jaime, there's a wonderful,
little, new bridal shop in town.

Orange juice.
Oh, yes.

Alright. Oh, and there's
so much to do, you know.

Have you planned on how many people
you want to invite?

And, oh, you know that lovely little
church that Steve used to go to.

I think that would be marvelous...

Helen?
Yes? Oh.

Listen to me with you
fussing like an old mother hen.

I'm sorry, Jaime.

What... It's your wedding.

No, if my parents were alive,
they'd want you to help.

And I want you to help.
Whatever you decide.
