- MR. GONE NARRATES:
Most of us inhabit at least

two worlds...the real world,
where we're at the mercy of

circumstance, and the world
within, the unconscious,

a safe place where we can
escape.

The Maxx shifts between these
worlds...against his will.

Here, homeless, he lives
in a box in an alley.

The only one who really cares
for him is Julie Winters,

a freelance social worker.

But in Pangaea, the other world,
he rules the Outback

and is the protector of Julie,
his Jungle Queen.

- There, he cares for her.

But he always ends up
back in the real world.

And me, old Mr. Gone...

Only I can see that
the secret which unites them

could destroy them.

I could be helpful.

Ah, screw it!

I think I'll have some fun
with them, first.

- ELECTRONIC VOICE: Recording.

- Hello, test, one, two.

Coroner's Log 47-53.

According to the police,
this kid's name was Tito.

They found him in a box down
some alley, which probably

explains why his clothes smell
so bad.

Ah, these dead fellas are
supposed to be peeled before

I get to them.

Huh?

Almost seems like he's changing
shape, the closer I get to

his skin.

What the...?

That isn't the way he looked

I-I-It's unnatural.

- Huh?

- JULIE: Maxx, are you out
there?

The bathroom door is stuck.

Maxx?

Are you asleep?

- No, Julie, I have
the strangest feeling.

- Maxx.

- Like I forgot something back
at the house.

- Probably nothing important.

- Yeah, well, this is it...
the Outback, the place I've been

telling you about all these
months, the place you insisted

was a figment of my diseased
brain, and now you're here.

You can see it.

You can stand right here and...
- And I suppose now you expect

me to fall to my knees and beg
for forgiveness for ever having

doubted you.

- Ah, well, not in so many
words and certainly not in

that tone of voice.

- Good, 'cause I'm not having
a good day.

- You know, everything seemed
a lot bigger last time I was

here...like those things.

I know they're Seussadons,
half rabbit and half something.

They hop.

- Well, duh, I could have
told you that.

What are those thingies?

- What thingies?

- Those...the little ickies
you're grinding to jelly.

- Looks like little
bitty Iszes.

- You know, if we're not
dreaming, do you suppose

we could get k*lled here?

- Oh, absolutely.

I'm sure of it.

But we won't die here.

We're the biggest things
around.

- Uh...

Guess again.

- BOTH:

- JULIE: Hey!

- BOTH: Huh?

- Will you guys knock it off.

Gee!

This is supposed to be like
my chance to work through

a bunch of cathartic crap.

I didn't come here to have you
guys screw it up by acting like

a couple of poster boys for
serious orthodontic mishaps.

And you, Mr. I'm-too-good-to-
hold-in-my-stomach, just because

you happen to be huge and...
- MAXX: Uh-oh.

- Look.

- CREATURES:

- MAXX: Isz. Lots of them.

- Don't worry about me.

You guys just run for
that cliff.

I'll stay right...here.

So much for chivalry.

Doofs.

- CREATURE:

- MAXX:

- CREATURES:

- I don't know why.

Something's drawing me out
there.

It's very intriguing.

Thought I saw something.

Guess not.

- SARA: I hate inventory almost
as much as I hate Mrs. Brussels.

One stupid box.

Two stupid boxes.

Three stupid...
- Life sucks, huh?

Down here, kiddo.

Hi, Sara.

I'm a magic piece of
talking clay.

- Great.

- No, really.

I can help you, if you sneak
me into Julie Winter's house.

- You know about Julie?

You must get around for
a piece of clay.

- Well, yeah, for a piece of
clay, I do.

- Why should I betray Julie
for you?

- I think it's important for
every writer to know...

MR. GONE's VOICE: ...

just how rotten she can be.

- Oh, god, get out of my head!

- You'll be back and we can
talk and play games

and I don't know.

- KID:

- Calvin.

- What?

- I don't think Julie is home.

- Meep. Meep. Oh. Meep.

Okay. Thanks. Meep.

- Such a cute boy.

- I am Maxx,
protector of this land.

- MAXX: He would be an Isz
except they are small and are

colored light gray and...

- CREATURE:

- ...Maxx will run and lose
giant Isz in the grasslands

of his beloved Pangaea.

Maxx will race across these
cliffs and plateaus, leaping

like a powerful goat frog.

Maxx will lead the monster away
with this wilderness cunning.

- CREATURE: Yah.

- JULIE: I know you're still
out there, Maxx.

I can hear you moving around!

You'd better be out there, Maxx.

- MALE VOICE: So, Sara,
do you bring all your

your dates here?

Just kidding.

- Look, just because I brought
you out here doesn't mean

I'm gonna betray her.

- What makes you think
I want to hurt her?

Maybe I just want to be
her friend.

- Yeah, right.

- Oh, I knew that wouldn't fly.

Okay, let's cut the crap, Sara.

You get me in the house
and I get you.

- Shut up!

Stop screwing with my head!

- I know things, Sara.

I know about the latitude
and longitude of people.

I know the secret fault lines
of their souls.

See, Sara, everybody snaps.

Look at you...talking to
a piece of clay.

And everybody has a Spirit
Animal who helps them over

the rough spots.

Yours might be a horse,
a huge, spirited Arabian.

I can see him passing like fire
through the wall you've built

around your soul...built of all
the mean, nasty, negative things

people have said about you.

- They're just ideas, words.

You hear them long enough
and eventually you buy it.

But if you know how to find your
animal, then it will teach you

how to navigate through life,
how to tear down that wall.

I can lead you straight
to that horse, Sara.

- So, when do we go to Julie's?

- MAXX:

Maxx rest under decaying
body of Air Whale.

- CREATURE:

- Now Maxx runs!

Maxx will seize the split tail
of this sleeping scorpion and...

swing...

for freedom.

Ah, how refreshing.

The bubbly waters of the spring
of life have revived me.

Now Maxx will end this with
a flashing blade armbar

which I draw from this stone.

Back, monster!

Maxx will not slay you,
but would rather be your tiny

friend.

Ah, hell, eat steel, bad Isz!

- JULIE: Maxx, I can hear you
sneaking around.

Maxx?

- Maxx fine.

- CREATURE:

- Isz fine, too!

Maxx will swing open brass
temple doors.

- And bury monster in flood
of lava.

- Uh...

I guess she's not home.

- Are you sure you've got
the right place?

Ouch!

Be careful, Sara.

I'm a sensitive piece of clay.

- Will you shut up.

I don't even know why I'm
doing this.

My world might suck, but at
least it's kind of normal,

and once I get rid of you,
it'll be...

sane.

- Sara?

You stopped talking, Sara.

I can't hear you.

I am inside, right?

You, you haven't played a joke
on old Mr. Clay, have you?

Sara?

Sara!

- What a funny little house.

It looks just like the one
I made out of clay and Popsicle

sticks when I was a little girl.

- MR. GONE: She's starting
to remember.

Not now.

It's too soon.

If we all return to normal,
I'll probably end up without

a head.

But if I nail that thing with
a poison dart, it'll buy me

some time.

- I remember now.

I was a Jungle Queen, ruler of
a vast domain, and whenever evil

appeared, I would fight it.

Ha, it's just like
I remember it.

- MR. GONE: No, no, no.

- And I had a pet bunny,
but he died.

- MR. GONE: No time left.

I have to do it now.

- CREATURE:

- Julie?

- CREATURES:

- MAXX: Julie!!

- MAN: Safe home, dear friends,
and come again, to behold the

mysteries of MTV's "Oddities."
