[THEME MUSIC PLAYING]

Who's that girl? What's her name?

Is she cool? Is she lame?

Oh, you're talking about what's her name

-Pepper Ann!
-Pepper Ann!

Is she lame? Is she cool?

Is she breaking every rule?

Is she anybody's fool?

[ALARM RINGING]

-Pepper Ann!
-Pepper Ann!

Pepper Ann! Pepper Ann!

Marching in her own parade

Pepper Ann, she's like one in a million

Pepper Ann! Pepper Ann!

Much too cool for seventh grade

Catch her if you can
Pepper Ann!

-BOY: Who?
-GIRL 1: Is that that girl from gym class?

-MOOSE: No, that's me.
-GIRL 1: Oh.

GIRL 2: Who is she
and why does she have her own song?

PEPPER ANN: Did someone take my lunch?

[SCHOOL BELL RINGING]

Pepper Ann! Pepper Ann!

Marching in her own parade

Pepper Ann, she's like one in a million

Pepper Ann! Pepper Ann!
Much too cool for seventh grade

No one's cooler than Pepper Ann!

She's her own biggest fan, Pepper Ann!

Wow! A dreidel!

Catch her if you can, Pepper Ann!

COACH DOOGAN:
Okay girls, it's diving time!

All righty. Let's start with the low,

or what I like to call the kiddie dive
and work our way on up.

The kiddie dive. Cool.

[SCOFFS] The kiddie dive? Lame.

-[ALL LAUGH]
-Lame. So lame!

COACH DOOGAN: Pearson, start us off.

Coach Doogan, I don't need to start
with the kiddie dive.

I am ready for the...

high dive.

-[GASPS]
-[ALL GASP]

The high dive
is for experienced divers only.

I'm ready.

Well, I mean, if you really think
you're ready,

and your parents have signed
the release forms,

okay, why the heck not?

-FEMALE VOICE: Come on, Pepper Ann!
-[ALL CHEER]

MILO: Come on, Pepper Ann!

I can do this. I am so ready.

[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING]

[CROWD CHEERING, APPLAUDING]

Beautiful!

Grab your duffel bag,
we're headin' to the Olympics, Pearson!

Pearson! Pearson!

Now, don't worry, help is on the way!

-I'm not ready.
-[SIREN BLARING]

Pepper Ann, you should've just said
you weren't ready for the high dive.

It's not that I wasn't ready.

The altitude made me light-headed.

In fact, I thought I handled myself
with a lot of grace and dignity.

Was that before or after you hurled
in the firetruck?

Guten Tag!

I invite you all to my 13th birthday party
this weekend.

Ooh! It is a Klaus-themed party.

-Everyzing will be Klaus!
-Klaus?

Klaus! Germany's favorite
jeep-driving cartoon uber monkey.

There will be Klaus piñatas
packed with schnitzel,

pin ze tail on ze uber-monkey,
and so much more!

I hope you all come.

Auf wiedersehen.

Aren't we a little too old
to be having monkey-themed parties?

-I can't wait...
-For this weekend.

-Dieter's party will...
-VANESSA: Be the b*mb.

Whoa! This party's gonna rock.

[SIGHS]
I'm going to be inside Dieter's house.

Pinch me, Alice Kane. [GROANS]

I don't get it. Why is everyone
so excited about Dieter's party?

Um, I think you should take a look
at your invitation.

Unsupervised?

As in we get to jump up and down on beds

and go swimming right after we eat,
unsupervised?

MILO: Unsupervised?

As in we can watch TV an inch away
from the screen, unsupervised?

No. Unsupervised, as defined
by the New Collegiate Dictionary means,

free from supervision or scrutiny.
Unsupervised.

TRINKET: Time to board the clue bus.

Unsupervised?

Hello? Boys and girls, together,
no adults.

Kissing! Kiss city! Smooch-ville!

Lip-locking, house-rocking,
spit-swapping, kissing.

-[CROWD IMITATING KISSING]
-[SCHOOL BELL RINGING]

But unsupervised parties
aren't supposed to happen

until the eighth grade.

It's a rite of passage.

Like learning to walk, riding a bike,
playing Vivaldi's "Autumn" on the viola.

I'm just excited that cute
Gwen Mezzrow's going.

She digs me.

DIETER: So you come to my party?

-Absolutely.
-I'm there.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

-[STEAM HISSES]
-[GULPS] Sure.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

Why'd you say yes
if you didn't want to go?

What choice did I have?

If I don't go, everyone will think
that I am a dork.

Don't worry.

I have a fool-proof plan
for getting out of this party.

-Hey, Mom.
-Peppie, I'm baking.

I want to let you know that Dieter
invited me to his birthday party.

Yeah, yeah.

His unsupervised birthday party.

No adults. Boys and girls together.

Unsupervised.

-Pepper Ann...
-I know. You're not gonna let me go.

I'll just have to get over it. Bye.

[SCREAMS]

You're growing up.

I'm not always going to be there
to protect you.

But I...

Sooner or later, you are going to realize
that life is unsupervised.

And those were my last two eggs.

First our parties are unsupervised,
now my own mother decides to trust me!

Hey, hey, hey. Easy, party girl.

Why are you so freaked out about all this?

I've never kissed anyone before!
There, are you happy now?

[CHUCKLES] Come on.

How hard can it be to kiss...

-[OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING]
-kiss, kiss, kiss.

[SLURPS LOUDLY]

[BELCHING]

[SOBS]

All you need is a little practice.

FEMALE VOICE: Oh, Henry. You complete me.

MALE VOICE: Shut up and kiss me.

Oh, hand. You complete me.

Shut up and kiss me.

There're two seats down here
by the girl kissing her hand!

My, aren't you ripe for the kissing?

[SMOOCHING]

-Perfect!
-Perfect!

Yo, PA!

You ready?

Ready.

-So Milo, what did you get for Dieter?
-Nothing.

This is for that cute Gwen Mezzrow.

Oh, yes, she will be mine.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

PEPPER ANN: There it is. Dieter's house.

The house of Dieter.

Wanna go over to Pizza Pit first?

There'll be bratwurst at the party.

Wanna go see the re-release
of the Fuzzy trilogy?

We just saw it yesterday.

Pepper Ann, is anything wrong?

[CHUCKLES] Wrong? What could be wrong?

I'm fine and I'm ready.

[BELL DINGS]

[SPEAKING GERMAN]

Hello, Pepper Ann! I'm so glad you...

Oh, Dieter.
I knew you wouldn't let me down.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER, LAUGHTER]

GERTA: Auf Wiedersehen, children.

I go to Sudbuckets to dance country
in a line.

I won't be back.

Who's ready for spin ze bottle?

About time this party got going.

Hey, Gwen Mezzrow.

Get away from me, you freak. Hey, Dietums.

NICKY: Come on, Pepper Ann.

You're going to miss spin the bottle.

[GASPS]

No! I am not ready.

I thought I could do it
because everyone else was doing it,

but I can't. I like supervised parties.

And pin the tail on the uber-monkey
and hopping off the kiddie dive.

And if that makes me lame,
then I'm lame and I'm proud.

NICKY: Um... Pepper Ann?

It's pointing to me.

[CHUCKLES NERVOUSLY] Never mind.

Look everyone! Dieter got the new
SuperMegaHardCore Gameblaster 8000!

[CROWD CHEERING]

This game is so last semester.

Could we get some cool music
around here?

[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]

How did it feel? Was it slimy?
Do you love him?

I imagine it would've been better
if there was some emotional attachment

between the two parties involved.

Overall, it was a bit of a letdown.

Not nearly as exciting as my first sneeze.

Did you know the power of a sneeze
can literally cause one's heart to stop?

Man, Gwen Mezzrow wouldn't even
talk to me all day.

She wouldn't even accept my present.

DIETER: Milo!

Thanks for ze great present.

[SIGHS]

[CHUCKLES] You know,

I might've overreacted
a little at the party.

All that cake must've made me
light-headed.

'Cause, if I did have to kiss somebody,
I would be fine.

Completely ready.

GRANDMA:
Is that my little Peppie-Schmeppie?

Come give your grandma a big kiss!

What, you too old to kiss your grandma?

I used to wipe your tushy.

[SCREAMS]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

Hey stranger, sit down.
I got a little story to tell.

What's that?
You say you've heard 'em all?

Well you haven't heard this one.
It's about love, loss,

and the relentless pursuit
of a little thing called truth.

File it under the case
of "The Case of the Missing Otter."

It was a day like any other day.
Or so I thought.

[PA TUNE PLAYING]

PRINCIPAL HICKEY: Attention everyone.

The following students report
to the principal's office immediately...

[GIRL SCREAMS]

Pepper Ann Pearson.

-Nicky Little.
-[GROANS]

-Milo Kamalani.
-Yes!

-Trinket St. Blair.
-I'll call you back, Marie.

And Dieter Liederhosen.

But I am simmering.

PEPPER ANN:
The whole rap was a bringdown.

Turns out some wise guy made off

with the Hazelnut Middle School's
beloved otter statue.

As far as Principal Hickey was concerned,

they might as well have stolen
a piece of his soul.

Well, well, well,
if it isn't my usual suspects.

Although I'd bet my last pad
of detention slips

that one of you stole the otter,

I can assure you
that I will not jump to conclusions

or make any false accusations.

PEPPER ANN: Despite his tendency to fly
off the handle at the drop of a hat,

Hickey was a reasonable man.

He wasn't out to intimidate anyone,
he just wanted to get to the truth.

Principal Hickey, you are scaring me.

I'm not pointing any fingers here.

I'm just asking where you were
between three and five o'clock yesterday

when the otter was stolen.

-Okay. I tell you.
-[CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]

[TYPEWRITER KEYS CLICKING]

I was typing "The Eat Beat,"
my food column for our school paper,

-Hazel Nuts N' Bolts.
-[PHONE RINGS]

Sam Scoop here.

Yes, this is Dieter.

It was Pepper Ann.

She had a hot tip
on an all-you-can-eat pannekuchen haus.

PEPPER ANN: Typical Dieter, muddies up
my name to clear his own.

DIETER: Of all the pannekuchen houses
in all the world,

I had to walk into hers.

[DANCE MUSIC PLAYING]

Listen. I'm not looking
for another good time Charlie.

I'm tired of waltzing for pancakes.
I'm giving all this up. Don't you see?

PEPPER ANN: [CHUCKLES] He saw all right.

He saw to it that he had an airtight alibi
while I was left twisting in the wind.

But I wasn't worried.
The truth was I was innocent

and the truth was what Hickey was after.

You're charging up
the wrong gold card, Principal Hickey,

I was at cheerleading practice.

You didn't leave early?

All right. All right.

-But it wasn't to steal any otter.
-[CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]

Pepper Ann turned me
onto a major sale at the mall.

I knew she was on the up and up.
Her mom worked there.

PEPPER ANN: I know what you're thinking.
There's my name again.

But telling a friend about a sale

doesn't make me
an otter-stealing criminal.

TRINKET: The prices were criminal.
I'd seen boats with better sales.

You trying to pull a fast one on me,
Mitch?

I wonder if I know what you mean.

Yeah, I wonder if you wonder.

What the matter, Missy?
Haven't you ever seen quality?

Not in this sweat shop.

Face it, you don't have a leg
to stand on.

That is only half true.

PEPPER ANN: The whole truth was
two suspects were free

and the noose
was tightening around my neck.

But I wasn't worried.
I had the truth on my side.

And if it's the truth you're after,
just ask.

Nicky Little. Smart, responsible, amazing.

Principal Hickey, please.

I would never steal the otter,
I helped design it.

Just cool your heels, Ms. Little.

I don't want a scapegoat,
I just want the truth.

Where were you yesterday afternoon?

I was in chem lab, showing Pepper Ann
the process of dry heat fusion.

She wanted to stay, but she promised
to meet Milo at Brain Dead.

You know Pepper Ann. In her zeal for life,
she can be so careless.

PEPPER ANN: Careless? It was an accident.
I was in a hurry.

NICKY: Once again, I was left
to pick up the pieces,

but this time was different.

The chemicals had spilled
onto some equations.

One glance and I knew
I had discovered the formula

for the most insidious form of mildew
known to man.

-[GASPS]
-Finally, the break I've been waiting for.

I'll be famous. I'll make millions.

-I...
-NICKY: Not so fast, Carter.

Nicky, you wouldn't.

Can't we be reasonable about this?

I'm sure we can make some kind
of comprom...

Mine, mine, it's mine!

[BOTH GRUNT]

[SIGHS, SHRIEKS] The formula.

PEPPER ANN: Oh, sure, Nicky may have saved
the world from soap scum buildup,

but did she have to shine
the spotlight of suspicion on me?

I was starting to feel the heat,
but I had an ace up my sleeve.

My best friend Milo.
He knew the truth.

He knew I didn't steal the...

Otter, lutra canadensis,
a web-footed, aquatic mammal.

You sure know a lot about otters.
What about thief?

Is there a definition for that
in your big book of words?

Whoa! Step back, Principal Man.

That otter was my friend
and I didn't steal him.

I was meeting Pepper Ann at Brain Dead
after school.

PEPPER ANN: That's right.
A bulletproof alibi.

I couldn't have stolen the otter.
I was with Milo all afternoon.

-MILO: But she was late.
-PEPPER ANN: Late? He was early.

There was traffic!
What did he want from me?

MILO: I wanted to wait inside,
as I tend to burn easily.

I couldn't believe my eyes.

No line for Crunch Pod, no waiting at Cowz
or Revenge Of Cowz.

All I needed was a quarter
and the joint was mine!

[MECHANICAL WHIRRING]

Change for a dollar?

You got to buy something.

Here!

Dimes? Nickels? I need quarters,
I tell you, quarters.

Don't got them, see? So scram, you.

[GROANS]

[COIN CLANKS]

[GASPS]

Look away, punkin.

PEPPER ANN: The traitor, I mean Milo,
was free to go.

Things didn't look good.

My back was against the wall.
The evidence was stacked against me.

I would've been sweating,
but I knew Principal Hickey

would give me a fair shake.

He only wanted the truth. He'd never jump
to conclusions or make false accusations.

You did it. You stole the otter.

But Principal Hickey,
what about getting to the truth?

I got to the truth.

The truth is you knew Dieter had a view
of the otter from his typewriter,

so you phoned in a tip
to get him out of the way.

And when Trinket got too nosy you told her
there was "a sale" at the mall.

Then you deliberately knocked over
those test tubes to distract Nicky.

That leaves Milo.

He said you were late to meet him
at Brain Dead. But you weren't late.

You just wanted to break his spirit
so he couldn't get in your way.

Now, there was no one to stop you.

All you had to do was smuggle
some expl*sives off a nuclear sub,

blast an underground tunnel
to the school, then airlift the statue...

for an exchange of ill-gotten goods
with your shill, Mr. Big.

[BOTH LAUGH]

[LAUGHS]

Well, I'm the one laughing
maniacally now, Pearson.

How's the truth feel now, huh? Huh?

I'm taking you down, Pearson,

-you and your whole lousy operation.
-Excuse me.

PRINCIPAL HICKEY: Not now, Vera.
You and your whole lousy op...

I brought the otter statue back.

Vera, you took it?

For spring cleaning. You asked me to.

PEPPER ANN: Surprise, surprise.

The truth was right
under his nose all along.

He just didn't see it
or maybe he just didn't want to.

What have I done?

I'm no principal of yours.

You just made a mistake.
It's understandable.

Oh, I'm so sorry!

Here, take this apple,
and this pencil,

and have this "I Hate Mondays"
sticky note pad.

[SOBS]

PEPPER ANN: At last, I beat the rap.

My name was cleared.

[GULPS, EXHALES]

The case of the missing otter was closed.

Hickey learned not to jump to conclusions
and I learned

that the truth will set you free,
for the most part.

The truth can also get you detention

if you're caught freeing frogs
from science lab.

Now, there's a story for you.

Born free, the Freddy frog story.
It was a day like any other day.

-Hey, hey! Wait! Where you going?
-[FROGS CROAKING]

I still have eleven minutes
of detention left.

Come back.

[THEME MUSIC PLAYING]

[THEME MUSIC CONCLUDES]
