- Great, maybe we'll run into one of your old friends

- I wish you'd take this more seriously!

Ming's robots could be anywhere.

- Lighten up, Jedda.

This is nothing but a fantasy land.

- Look out! Ice robots!

There's too many of 'em, LJ! Fall back!

- Hey, it's only a game!

[dramatic music]

- LJ, use a nova grenade! Hurry!

- Here!

It's your fantasy, you throw it!

- LJ, get yourself up here right away!

- Here we go again.

- What's wrong with you, LJ?

These battle simulations could save your life

or someone else's life some day!

I'm terribly disappointed in you.

- Yeah?

Well, I'm a little disappointed

that you refuse to notice that I'm growing up.

I mean, this is just make-believe, Dad.

Kid stuff!

- You won't think it's "kid stuff"

if Ming ever gets his cold hands on you!

- Well, Ming hasn't caught me yet!

- What's eating LJ?

- Adulthood. - Huh?

- What Lothar means, Kshin,

is that LJ wants to act like a grown-up,

but he's not yet clear on how it's done.

- I hope he figures it out soon, for both our sakes!

[suspenseful music]

- Warning, warning!

Unauthorized transmission from Ice Station Earth!

- Greetings, Flash Gordon! - Ming!

- I see my spies on Mongo were right.

You brought me a gift-- Morlag,

the leader of the underground rebellion on Mongo.

- Once we've beaten your ice robots on Mongo,

we'll track you to the ends of the universe,

and make you pay for your crimes!

- Brave words, Lizard Man,

but it will take more than words

to save your scaly hide now!

- Attention, attention!

Roboships incoming!

- Now comes the fun part!

- This is your idea of fun?

- Watch this!

Uh-oh! Our defense systems are gone!

- Are we having fun yet?

- We will in a minute! Hold on to your scales!

There's a place down on the Moon

I once used for piloting practice,

Corkscrew Canyon!

- I hope you know what you're doing, Flash!

- Don't worry, trust me!

[lasers blasting]

[engine surges]

- Can I look now?

- Your missing all the fun!

We've just got one more
[ … ]

of Ming's little playmates to shake,

and there's how we'll do it.

The Devil's keyhole!

Tell me this isn't fun now!

- Are you crazy? We'll never get through!

- Sure we will, Morlag old buddy,

with inches to spare!

[expl*si*n]

- I hope we make it to Monitor without having any more "fun."

I've had my "fun" quota for the week!

- Congratulate yourself while you can, Flash Gordon!

But if I can't destroy the leader of the Lizard Men,

then I will destroy what he has come to Earth for--

the Sun Medallions!

Octon!

Have you found where

the Sun Medallions are being constructed?

- Yes, sire. In the dense Peruvian jungle.

- Dispatch a roboship equipped with my new super laser.

And Octon--

see to it that everything is destroyed!

- Hey, LJ, hey LJ! What are you doing?

- Thinking.

- About being grown up?

Mandrake says you haven't figured out

how to be a grown-up yet.

I thought maybe we could, uh, figure it out together.

- You did, huh?

If I don't know how to be a grown-up,

how can you help me?

- You know, Zuff...

I always thought it was easy to be a grown-up,

but now I'm not so sure.

- [jabbers in agreement]

[suspenseful music]

- Flash has told me so much about each of you,

I feel we are friends already.

- My son Rick and the Phantom are in Peru

at the Sun Medallion factory, but...where's LJ?

- I believe he said something about going for a walk.

- Perhaps I'll meet him another time.

I'm anxious to pick up the Sun Medallions

and return to my people.

- What exactly is a Sun Medallion?

- A source of incredible power!

They were invented by Richard Gordon and the Phantom

with the help of Incan priests.

The Sun Medallions will keep my people warm

through the long Ice Age that Mongo is just entering.

Without these medallions,

I shudder to think what would happen to my people on Mongo.

- Don't worry about a thing, old buddy.

Rick and the Phantom are

putting the finishing touches on 'em even as we speak.

[eerie music]

♪ ♪

- Without your ancient Incan knowledge,

these life-saving Sun Medallions

would never have been possible.

- We are glad to do what we can.

We have no love for Ming the Merciless.

- I'm a little worried about the crystal structure

of this Sun Medallion.

I have an instrument inside the pyramid

that'll tell me whether or not it's all right.

[dramatic music]

[super laser pulsates]

- Look out!

[super laser pulsating]

The fire stone!

♪ ♪

There must be something we can do!

- Without a fire stone, we are helpless!

[super laser pulsating]

♪ ♪

[energetic music]

♪ ♪

[expl*si*n]

- What's happening?

- A warm greeting from our friend, Ming!

- If we had a Sun Medallion we could release its energy

and stop the destruction.

- We've got a Sun Medallion,

but we'll need a way to focus its energy!

- This lens should do the trick!

- All right!

Now!

♪ ♪

[energy hums]

[expl*si*n]

♪ ♪

- They may have destroyed one laser ship,

but I destroyed the fire stones!

- Sire!

Additional firestones exist off the coast of Peru,

on the slopes of this underwater volcano.

- That is of little consequence!

Once I have captured Morlag

and interrogated him with the Inquisitor,
[ … ]

all the firestones on Earth will do them no good.

- But sire, Morlag is securely guarded within Monitor.

- I have prepared a small "gift"

which I want you to deliver to Dynak X--

a virus program which you will inject

into her memory banks and logic centers.

The program will destroy

all of Monitor's intruder alert systems!

[eerie music]

♪ ♪

- We just received a message from Rick and the Phantom.

One of Ming's laser ships

attacked the Sun Medallion base.

No one was hurt

but the supply of fire stones was completely destroyed.

♪ ♪

- There's only one place to get more.

Tell the Phantom I'm on my way.

- Can Zuff and I come too, Flash?

- It may be dangerous, Kshin.

- Aw, nothing's too dangerous for a Defender of the Earth!

Besides, think what a good geology lesson

an underwater volcano would be!

- Come on, then. We haven't much time.

- Sire!

- What is it, Octon?

- Flash Gordon is headed for the underwater fire stone mine.

- Excellent...

I have a little surprise waiting for him!

Prepare to load my virus program into Dynak X!

- It is done, sire!

Dynak X has received the program.

- Hmm...

In a matter of hours,

Morlag and the Defenders will be mine!

- LJ, LJ, are you in there?

- Yes. Can I help you?

- Look, Son,

Morlag is our guest and he hasn't even met you yet.

Hiding in your room is not very polite.

- And you always do what's right, no matter what.

- First the battle practice, now this attitude of yours.

What's the problem, LJ? Let me help.

I wonder if a caterpillar has this kind of trouble

learning to be a butterfly...

[peaceful music]

- I found 'em, I found 'em!

I found the fire stones all by myself!

- Good going, Kshin!

Tell you what-- you found 'em, you mine 'em!

The controls are all yours.

- Really? - [jabbers skeptically]

- Oh yeah, Zuff? Watch this!

- That's it, Kshin. Now ease her in...

[mining laser hums]

♪ ♪

- [jabbers fearfully]

- What's that?

- Shark Men!

I thought they were just on Mongo!

- They were until Ming transported them to Earth

when Mongo's oceans began to freeze.

[tridents zapping]

I know one trick that never fails.

[electricity crackles]

I've electrically charged the hull of the ship!

- All right, you did it!

Look at those Shark Men go!

- I have no idea what's wrong with Dynak's defense systems.

- Jedda, why don't you and LJ

show Morlag the Battle Simulation Room?

Lothar and I will continue working on Dynak.

Here, my friend, perhaps this will be of some help.

- Very funny.

[engines roaring]

[lasers blasting]

- Monitor is mine!

- This is the Battle Simulation Room.

- Sounds like the fun and games have already started!

- But that's not part of--

[expl*si*n]

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- LJ!

Give us a hand!

both: [groans]

- Nice touch, Jedda!

You ought to do this for a living!

Hey Jedda, we get the point!

Don't you think

you're carrying this simulation a little too far?

- LJ!

We're under attack! Where are Jedda and Morlag?

- You mean-- you mean that was real?
[ … ]

- LJ, what have you done?

- Ming has Jedda and Morlag--

and it's all my fault!

[ominous music]

- When the robot came into the Battle Simulation Room

I thought it was just an illusion--

part of a battle program!

I didn't try to help Morlag and Jedda till it was too late.

- Jedda and Morlag have paid for your mistakes, LJ.

I hope the lesson has been worth the price!

- Dad was right all along.

I don't know what's wrong with me.

I don't deserve to be a Defender of the Earth.

- We all make mistakes, LJ,

and people judge us by how we handle those mistakes.

But first things first--

we must rescue Jedda and Morlag from Ming.

- Not we, Mandrake... me!

- Come back, LJ!

Don't do anything foolish!

[engine roars]

- There it is!

- Ming's Ice Station Earth now on screen.

- Okay, Pop, this is one of your battle strategies.

I hope it works!

- An intruder, my lord!

A Defender ship!

- Raise the barrier, Octon!

And put it on the screen so our friends can witness

what happens to those who oppose me!

- Raising the barrier now, my lord.

[expl*si*n]

- You'll pay for this, Ming!

So help me, you'll pay!

- Garax, check to see if there were any survivors.

Now...

perhaps you will answer my questions voluntarily, my dear.

- We'll never cooperate!

- It's of no matter.

The Inquisitor will take everything I need

from your mind-- and leave you a walking zombie!

- So far, so good...

as long as Ming thinks I was k*lled in the expl*si*n.

[volcano erupting]

- Okay, Kshin, that should do it.

We've got enough fire stones to keep Morlag's people safe

for generations.

- Just one more, please?

[peaceful music]

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to, really!

I'll fix it!

- Mistakes can happen to anyone, Kshin.

Just relax and back us straight outta here.

- Oh, gotcha.

- I did it, I did it! - [jabbers ecstatically]

Now how about taking us to Peru

so we can get these stones delivered on time?

- Now to see if my dad's old strategy works.

[suspenseful music]

- Lower barrier!

♪ ♪

No survivors.

♪ ♪

- Garax, report to the Hall of Inquisition immediately!

- Yes, sire!

- Time for a little follow the leader.

- I hope this new masking device Rick created

will make us invisible to Ming's radar...

and able to reach LJ before Ming discovers him.

- You worry too much, old friend!

We'll be arriving at Ice Station Earth shortly.

Then is when you should start worrying.

- For the last time, Lizard Man,

where are your rebel troops hiding on Mongo,

and how many of you are there?

Speak!

- [breathes heavily]

Do what you want with me.

I'll never betray my friends, never!

- Sire.

- It seems our visitors don't wish to talk.

Engage the power supply to the Inquisitor.

It seems a shame to destroy a mind with so much potential.

♪ ♪

- Jedda, Morlag! Cover your eyes!

[nova grenade explodes]

- [screams]

Garax, stop them!

- My photo sensors have been overloaded, my lord!

♪ ♪

- No excuses!

I'll have you melted down!

- LJ, I've never been so glad to see anyone in my life!

- I, too, am grateful beyond words,

but the blinding effect of that nova grenade

won't last long, I'm afraid!

- Seize them!
[ … ]

[energetic rock music]

♪ ♪

- How'd you get in here?

- More to the point, how are we to get out?

- Ming's hangar deck!

We'll escape in one of his own ships!

Come on!

- Right. This time it's not a drill.

- Ice robots! Quick, into the hangar!

♪ ♪

Come on, LJ!

- Our escape will be a lot smoother

with a little oil in the works!

♪ ♪

- Pretty slick, LJ! Now what?

- Now to melt some ice!

[laser hums]

- Okay, so we made it as far as Ice Station Earth.

How do we get in?

- Observe!

- Mandrake, sometimes you amaze me!

- I had nothing to do with that, I assure you!

- Mandrake! Dad!

- Come on, let's get out of here!

- Take us home, Son!

- You bet, Dad!

- You haven't won yet, Defenders!

- Ming's refilling the tunnel exit with ice!

- Dad?

- You can do it, Son. I've got faith in you.

- I hope this works!

I've been practicing this move for months

in the Battle Simulation Room.

[dramatic music]

- No, it cannot be!

You fools allowed them to escape!

[engine roars]

- Flash, I can't thank you and the other Defenders enough.

Thanks to the Sun Medallions,

the rebellion here on Mongo is going well!

- Keep up the fight, old friend.

Flash Gordon and the Defenders, out!

- I'd say we all did a wonderful job...

and we deserve a little reward.

- You're quite right, my friend!

Perhaps a spot of ice cream is in order.

- The only problem is... who's gonna pay for it?

- Someone who's all grown up, I think.

[chuckles] Right, Son?

- Okay, okay, I know I've been a pain

to live with for the last few weeks.

I deserve it. It's my treat.

- Hey, that's great! - [chuckles]

- All right! - Okay, LJ!

- Dad, can I talk to you for a minute?

- What is it, Son?

- I'm a little short on money. How about a loan?

- [chuckles]

No matter how old they get, they always need their dad!
