The 4K restoration
of "Jungle Holocaust”

[Ruggero Deodato, 1977]
was done by the Augustus color lab

for Minerva Pictures and Midnight Factory.
The original negative was used

for the film restoration
and a vintage positive

from the Cineteca Nazionale was used
for the audio track.

Color Correction Supervisor: Lamberto Bava
Lab: Augustus color s.r.I.

Nicolas Winding Refn presents

"Jungle Holocaust"

This is a true story, occurred in 1975
among the tribes of the Stone Age

recently discovered
on the island of Mindanao.

The described events,
ceremonies and rituals are all true

and were actually experienced
by the protagonist.

- Would you like a drop, Mr. Harper?
- No, no thanks.

- What about you?
- No, thank you.

- Really?
- Yes.

Shouldn't you make him quit drinking?

Charlie's a great pilot, don't worry.

He might drink a lot,
but he flies better than me.

This jungle scares me,
even if I'm just flying over it.

I need a drop or two
to steady my nerves.

This places is awful
if you don't know it,

let alone if you're coming from a city.
This jungle is lethal.

Weak people can't survive here.

- Strong people can barely make it.
- There's nothing to eat or drink.

- We're about to land.
- Thank God.

You may be an anthropologist
who lived in the equatorial forests,

but you don't look too bold.

Have you any idea what it's like
to travel through this jungle?

- You can't even imagine.
- Tomorrow, we'll be back in Manila.

They must be crazy
to do this kind of work out here.

I wouldn't do it
even if they paid me in gold.

You're right.

They wanted a fat check to come with me.

They deserve every cent I pay them.
They were with me in Borneo, too.

Come on, Robert.

You think they're okay
just because they bring you oil.

Let's cross our fingers, then.

Don't you think this job will be fruitful?

Yeah, I think. Let's hope.

I won't know anything for sure until
I've examined the seismograph sheets.

Gamma Two calling Base Camp.

Gamma Two calling Base Camp.
Do you copy? Over.

Not a peep out of them.

Maybe no one's monitoring
or their radio's on the blink.

It must be broken, right?

Try again.

Gamma Two calling Base Camp.
Gamma Two calling Base Camp.

Gamma Two calling Base Camp.
Do you copy?

What's going on, Charlie? Can we land?

We don"t need the radio to land.

Those boys down there
are sure going to hear about this from me.

It's not their fault, Mr. Harper.
It's this god-awful jungle.

Here we are.
Take care of your seat belts.

- Scared?
- No, I'm not.

Ehi!

Swan, Rolf, are you okay?

- A bit shaken up, but all right.
- Those jerks...

How did Roland
let the strip get into this condition?

I don't get it.
They're not here to meet us.

They could hardly miss hearing us land,

since we practically smashed up the plane.

Quiet!

- What's the matter?
- I heard a noise over there.

I feel a lot safer with this.

- How bad is it, Charlie?
- We lost the wheel.

It must be here.

If we find the wheel, it shouldn't be
too hard to put it back again.

Will you give us a shout
if you need a hand with it?

No, I can take care of this.

You'll only have to wait.
What are you doing, Swan?

That's a nasty cut.

- You coming to take a look?
- Yeah, hang on a minute.

Roland!

Wiler!

Well, that's comforting.

The silence was starting
to give me the creeps.

Yeah.

Wiler!

Hey!

I bumped into this.

That's why they didn't answer our call.
It's here.

- What do you think of it?
- I wouldn't know.

There it is!

- Hey, Charlie!
-Yes?

The wheel! It's over here!

- I'll come and get it!
- Well, camp is over there.

Let's go find out what's going on.

I wouldn't miss you and Roland
shouting at each other for anything.

There's nobody here.

Let's go.

No supplies, their g*ns are gone.

Their personal things, gone too.

It's almost as if something forced them
to get out in a hurry.

That's if they had the time.

What do you mean?

Look.

This was made by a man.

Whoever made it, used it to k*ll.

- Blood?
- Yes.

You mean there are
natives around here?

Yes.

Worse than natives.

Yes. Judging from the way this was made,

it seems they're still living
in the Stone Age.

Robert! Robert!

Wiler.

But...

Robert!

Robert!

Wiler! Roland!

You're a fool, Robert!

A lunatic would go bolting
into the jungle like that.

Do me a favor.

I'm not in the mood for one
of your lectures on jungle survival.

Do you think this is your university?

- Sorry, Rolf.
- That's okay.

We mustn't start fighting now.
It won't get us far.

Let's try and find
our way back to the plane.

That's easier said than done.
Where did we come from?

- There, I think.
- You think?

Why not from over there?
Or there? Or there?

Do you get what I was trying to say?

Where are they?
What the hell are they doing?

I'm starting to worry.
I don't like this place.

The plane is ready, we should go.

- Charlie!
- Wait.

What are you going to do?

Maybe, I can see
something from up here.

Can you see anything, Robert?

Yes!

I can see the windsock!
Rolf, we're all right!

Thank God.

Oh, my God.
They massacred them.

Come on. Come on!

Where were you?

It'll be dark soon and I can't fly
blind over a country like this.

Yeah, I know, Charlie.

Do you recall that spear?

As far as we know,
it belonged to the Manabu.

We know nothing about them.

Manabu?

But... but... it's absurd.

- They're out of the Stone Age.
- And they're also cannibals.

Keep your voice down.

They don't know
anything about this.

Yes, cannibals.

The last cannibals left in the world.

Along with some on the Amazon
and in New Guinea.

Stop! No more of that.

What are you trying to do,
give me the shakes?

I'm thirsty, I'll drink something.

Do you want some?

- Robert.
- Yeah?

- What do you think we should do?
- Take off. As soon as there's daylight.

Charlie's fixed everything.

The plane can now fly.

- I'm sorry, Swan.
- For what?

- We woke you up.
- I have to go outside. Excuse me.

- That isn't very wise.
- Oh, I'm afraid I have to.

- Okay, but don't go too far.
- Here, take this with you.

No, don't.

- Swan! I've got to help her!
- Charlie!

- No, Charlie, you've got to stay here.
- Let me go!

- Stop it, Charlie.
- Let me go!

- Swan! Swan!
- We've got to stay in the plane.

- We can't help her.
- Stop.

We'd die, Charlie. We'd just die.

- We'll look for her tomorrow.
- Swan.

Don't worry.

I'll take a look from up there.

Swan's dress!

Run!

Rolf. Rolf! Rolf, snap out of it!

Come on.
For Christ's sake, Charlie's dead!

There's nothing we can do for him.

Put yourself together,
we got to get out of here!

It was a trap, Robert.

- They set it for us.
- I know!

We've got to get back to the plane.

- What about that poor girl?
- You think she's still alive?

Well, I don't. We've been so stupid.

- I'll never make it.
- You've got to.

We have to get back to the plane.
Then, we'll be safe.

Why can't you face up
to the fact that we're lost, Robert?

Cut that!

Something's burning. Let's go and check.

Come on.

Poor Swan.

Rolf! Look!

That's the river
that runs past the airstrip.

- Are you sure?
- Yes, it has to be.

- That's great!
- Well, we're going to make it.

Yay!

I'll tell you one thing.

If I manage to survive
this damn awful trip,

I never want to hear
the word "jungle" ever again.

We have
to hope Man a bus didn't destroy the plane.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Hang on, Rolf.
The current is strong!

Rolf!

- Be careful, keep your eyes open!
- I'm trying!

Rolf!

No!

No!

No! No!

No! Stop!

No!

Stop it! Stop it!

No!

Leave me! No!

Help me.

Hey, no!

Yes!

Yes!

A bird... We flew here...

The plane... They think I can fly!

What the hell? Get away!

Go away, you b*stards!

Hey!

There!

There!

Hey!

No!

No!

Come here, please.

Don't go away.

I want to eat.

I want to eat.

Please, help me.

Help.

No. No.

That's not... what I meant.

No.

I'm hungry.

Stop it! No, stop it!

No! Stop!

No!

No!

No! Stop!

Oh, look. Come here. I'll show you.

Water.

Water, for me.

Come on. Good.

They captured it.

So, I'm just a prey too.

A fish!

You're great.

Thank you.

Rolf! Rolf!

Rolf! Rolf!

Rolf.

- Rolf.
- Yeah?

Like I was telling you,
my place is a mansion.

I'll take you there, buddy.

It's only an hour's drive
from Los Angeles.

I bought it off a big shot
in the stock market.

He must have been crazy.

- What a deal.
- Robert.

It's worth three times as much.

The air conditioning alone
must have cost him a fortune.

- Robert.
- You know what?

He just wanted to sell it.

- Robert.
- He's a complete basket case.

You don't have to do a thing.
Not a thing. It's all...

- It's all electronic.
- Okay, Robert.

Opens the doors,
turns on the showers.

You can cook a juicy steak...

Robert!

Robert!

You're eating bat meat, Robert.
You understand?

It wasn't cooked electronically.

You're in the middle of a jungle,

God knows how far from home.

My refrigerator.

Not bad.

- Think you can make it, Rolf?
- I don't know.

- I didn't even think of trying...
- You'll do it.

If only we could make the girl realize
our lives depend on the plane.

I tried to, Robert.

None of the dialects I know seem
to have any meaning for her at all.

According to the manuals on survival,

wherever you are,
the ground should be full of enzymes

and natural antibiotics.

My knee's still rotting away.

They thought I could fly.
They must have seen the plane.

I mean, she can speak.
Words come out of her mouth.

You must be able
to understand something.

Those aren't words, Robert.

It would take us years
to get to talk to her.

It's an helicopter!

Hey!

Stop! Stop!
We're down here!

Hey! Hey, down here!
Hey, down here!

Hey! Stop!

Stop! Hey!

We're here! We're down here!
We're down here!

There's no sign of life anywhere,
except the plane.

It's sitting on a strip, perfectly fine.

We thought Man a bus may be the cause.

I can't see anything from here.
It'll take a ground search to find them.

The jungle's so thick,
all we can see is tree tops.

Here! Down here! Here!

Lausanne 6-1-2 calling base.
Five minutes left on fuel range.

Abandoning search pattern now.

They can't be alive.

We'll stop looking for them.
I'm coming back.

Stop! Stop! We're down here!

Stop! Don't leave us!

Hey! We're here! Come back!

This water tastes terrible.

Well,
we've survived all right up to now.

Think of all the germs
we've swallowed so far.

Microbes totally unknown to us.
Yet, we're still alive.

Hey, wait just a minute.

Couldn't this river be the one
that flows past the airstrip?

I don't know.
This damn jungle's full of rivers.

This leg's starting to go numb on me.

There must be some way
we can find out where we are.

There's only one person
who could get us out of this,

and that one is the girl.

She'd never lead us
in the right direction,

even if there was a way to talk to her.

Why shouldn't she?

Robert, getting back to the plane
isn't our only problem.

The real problem is getting there alive.

- The cannibals.
- Yes, exactly. They're still there.

They're a lot stronger than we are.
The jungle is their natural element.

We'd be providing them with a good meal.

- Yeah.
- God, that's terrible.

Maybe it's terrible in our world,
but it isn't in theirs.

Everyone becomes
a link in the chain of survival.

Robert!

Don't move!

Well, at least we've got
a deadly weapon now.

Cobra poison kills in seconds.

Robert!

That's the way we have to go.

She's leading us
in the wrong direction.

She's frightened.

She knows that way takes
us through the cannibals.

- The river.
- Yes.

Of course, you're right.

Yeah, the helicopter won't find us.

Anyway,
I think they've given up on us.

Okay, Rolf.
We can't stay here forever.

No, wait.
Let's wait for the dark to came.

We'll even their advantages.

You see what I see? The airfield!

We've made it!

We're going back home.

God willing.

Of course he's willing.
Thank you, Lord!

Come!

Go!

Robert!

- Go on. Leave me here.
- No.

I'm not leaving you here.

Help me, Rolf!

I beg you.

In my place,
would you have done the same thing?

Answer.

Don't leave me.

Answer.

I beg you, Rolf. I want to save you, too!

There, look at them!
Come on, look at them!

Look at them

and you'll undestand what I did.

Yes.

- Please, take me home.
- Yes. I will.

- I will.
- Yes.

You see, Rolf? We're nearly there.

My friend, I want you to know
I would never have made it without you.

I would never have made it without you.

Come on!

Hold tight!

Yes. I'm gonna take you home now.

We're going home, Rolf.

I'm going to take you home.

I'm going to take you home.

Robert Harper was admitted
to a hospital in Manila.

Four months later,
he returned to the United States.

After leaving his job, he got married

and he currently lives
with his wife on a small farm in Mexico.
