Why isn't my kite flying?
There has to be something about flying
in my Big Book
of Discoveries and Inventions.
No need for that.
I've got everything we need to know
right up here.
My mom's a pilot
and Great Aunt Rose built planes,
so I know lots about flying.
Have a seat, class.
There's one important thing
you need to fly.
Who knows what that is?
Magic?
That's my kind of thinking, but no.
Ada?
Wings.
Closer. You have to be "aerodynamikicka."
I mean, "aerodomestica…"
[groans]
Do you mean aerodynamic?
That's it! Ae-ro-dy-namic.
That's all about
how air moves around objects.
And to fly, an object needs
a lot of air moving under it.
That's an aerodynamic force called "lift."
Got it.
I love lift, 'cause it makes things fly.
And it's easy to say. Watch and learn.
[blows]

Good guess.
But no. We need wind!
-Makes sense.

[Ada] Hmm, the leaves
aren't really moving.

[sighs] Guess our hypothesis was wrong.
It wasn't totally wrong.
Your kite does need wind to fly,
but it must also need something else.
Maybe it's too big to fly?
I don't know.
The Wright brothers invented airplanes,
and they're humongous.
-Hi!
-Hello.
The Wright brothers
would know how to fix my kite.
To invent the airplane,
they had to think way outside the box.
Way, way outside the box.
Back then, most people didn't even think
it was possible for humans to fly.
Yeah, but their plane had an engine
to help them stay in the air.
My kite doesn't.
True. But they tested it
without an engine first.
A plane without an engine?
So basically a giant kite?
Technically a glider. Like this.

All right, but you're missing out
on some pretty epic views.
Okay. Maybe just one peek.
Oh my gosh.
This is amazing!
And terrifying.
But mostly amazing!
Look! We're getting
lots of lift from the wind.
Must be because the wings are mostly flat,
with a slight curve.
Aero-mazing observation, Iggy.
I've got another observation. Rain cloud!
[Ada] Nimbostratus!
[all giggle]
I've always wondered
what it's like inside a rain cloud.
Turns out it's really wet.
Birds! Oh, gosh.
You know how I feel about birds.
Look how they're flying. In a V-shape.
I wonder why.
Because a V-shape is aerodynamio…
I mean, aerodynamic.
It moves the wind to the sides,
so you can fly
without the wind pushing you backwards.
Hey, the glider also has a V-shape.
That's why all the kites were shaped
like Vs at last year's contest.
That must be what my kite is missing.
New hypothesis.
If Iggy's kite has
a more aerodynamic shape, then it'll fly.
I think that's it! Whoa!
Iggy!
[Iggy and Rosie yell]
[both grunt]
Whoa! Crash landing. You okay?
I-I'm good.
No, I'm great,
'cause I know how to fix my kite!
If I make it more like a V,
like the glider and the birds,
wider in the front,
and narrower in the back,
and flatter so the wind
can give it more lift, maybe it'll fly.
I think the Wright brothers
would say that sounds "right."
