01x02 - Glory Road

Post by bunniefuu »

Careful you don't
scratch that.
It's genuine rosewood.

Yes, ma'am.

I wish I could drive you
to Laramie, Miss Essie.
It's a long way.

Oh, thank you,
but I'll be all right.

The good Lord knows
I'm never alone.

Now then, if you'll
hand me up my strength.

Yes, ma'am.

There we are.

Here you go.

Hey!
That's my saddle.

Didn't hurt it none.

- ESSIE: Bless you.
- MAN 1: Bye, Miss Essie.

ESSIE: Bye.

Hey, uh,
hear your piano player
got hisself shot up.

- You heard right.
- Well, I'm in a bad fix.

All I got in the world
is this here saddle.

My horse got shot
out from under me,

and I've been praying
for a ride to Laramie.

Prayer is
a powerful friend.

Yeah, it is.

Here you are in need of a piano
player, and I play the piano.

Providence,
pure providence.

I keep telling folks
to open their hearts

and let
the good things happen.

My name is Roany.
Roany Bishop.

Well now, climb aboard,
Roany Bishop.

Thank you, thank you.

You got folks
in Laramie?

No, ma'am.

But I got a friend lives near
there, at the relay station.

Sherman Ranch.

Real good friend.

I can't hardly
wait to see him.

Seen Jess?

He went in for
a cup of coffee.

Where's Andy?

Trailed after
him, I guess.

Coffee?

You know, if I took out
for very cup Jess drinks,

- he'd be owin' me at
the end of the month.
- Right you are.

Oh, well.

Give you a hand.

[ barks ]

All right, Jojo.
Just for that, outside.

Go outside.

Hey, Jess, look at this.

"See the light
with Essie Bright."

- What's it mean?
- Search me.

What's the matter?

Andy, if that man asks for
me, you tell him I'm not here.

- Understand?
- Why?

Go on now, before he
gets to Slim or Jonesy.

- But, Jess...
- Andy, just tell him
I don't live here anymore.

That I moved on.
Now go on now.

You act like you're
afraid of him.

Do like I tell ya.

- Hey, this here
the Sherman Ranch?
- That's right.

Bet your water
barrel's empty, mister.

- Might be.
- Jonesy, why don't
you fill it up?

Looks too high
for me to reach.

All right. But take
the gentleman inside.
He might want some coffee.

Bet you'd rather have
some nice, cold water.

Does Jess Harper live here?

No.
Moved on.

He moved on?

Well, I heard he just
rooted down for good.

Are you sure
he don't live here?

Used to live here.
But like I said,
he moved on.

- Where?
- I don't know.

He didn't leave word
where he was headin'?

No. He didn't.

Oh. He's comin'
back, ain't he?

He didn't say.

Oh, that...

I come all this way.

Now he ain't here.

I counted on him
bein' here!

Eh, they got enough water
there to wash their sins away.

You sure you can
do it with water?

- Ma'am.
- Essie.
Essie Bright.

Name's Jones.
They call me Jonesy.

Oh, that's easy
enough to remember.

- A good name.
- Thank you.

And a good name is rather to
be chosen than great riches.

I suppose so.

But I don't recollect
havin' the chance to choose.

Ah, that's from the
Book of Proverbs.

I'm a preacher lady, Jonesy.

And that's my work,
spreading the light.

I see.

Oh, uh, about water
washing sins away,
that was just...

That was just talk, I know.
But wouldn't it be
dandy if it was true?

Sure would.

Well, you got
plenty of water.

Anything else
I can tend to?

Let's see how
this is ridin'.

Oh, just enough slack,
I figure.

Well, looky here.
A piano.

Genuine rosewood.

You don't say.

Used to be my grandma's,
back in Harrisburg.

Oh, I can still see it
sittin' in the parlor

near that red plush settee.

Sure is pretty.

And I bet it's got
a tone to match.

You play the piano?

Oh, sort of.
A long time ago.

Well now, I'm just
going as far as Laramie.

I'll be preaching
there a while.

You can play it all you want
whenever you get to town.

Well, thank you, ma'am.

And I hope it's soon, Jonesy,
you'd be mighty welcome.

Roany?

Roany? Come along!
Time to go.

Time to hit that Glory Road.

Dear me.

You would think Laramie
was Zion, wouldn't ya?

Oh, thank you.
Thank you.

Now, don't forget, Jonesy.

Any time you're in Laramie,
you can play the piano
all you want.

Thank you.

Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.

- Yah!
- Bye.

All right.
I'm waiting to hear about it.

About what?

About how Jess used to
live here, only he moved on.

Oh, that?

Why did you lie to him, Andy?

Maybe you didn't
hear me right.

I heard you right.

Now you tell me why
you lied to him.

It was only
a little lie, Slim.

There's no
such thing and you know it.

I've never laid
leather to you, Andy,

but if you don't start
talking straight.

I only did what I
thought was right.

I did it for Jess.
He told me to say it!

Now, you don't lie
for anyone.

Remember that.
Not for anyone.

[ door opens ]

I want to talk to you.

Go ahead.

Inside.

You got any lies to tell after
this, you tell them yourself.

I'll make a note.

Jess.

Who was that man?
Why didn't you
want to see him?

That's my business.

Getting Andy to lie for
you makes it mine too.

Not to me it doesn't.

I'm waitin', Jess.

Well, you'll wait a long time.

When a man comes
asking for you,

and you won't face
up to him,

I've got a right
to know about it.

Well?

He saved my life once.

Well, why did you duck him?

Because I wanted to.

You got anything against
a straight answer?

You got all the answers
you're gettin' from me.

Oh, hi.

I didn't get no further than
that first bend in the road,

my brake rod broke.

Well, I think I
can fix it for you.

Oh, I'd sure appreciate
it if you could.

Hey, hey, it's a nice
place you got....

Jess!

That boy told me you
don't live here no more!

I don't, Roany.
I just came back to pick
up some things I left.

Oh, I'm
glad to see you, boy.

It's been a long time.

How you been?

Oh, fine.
Fine, fine.

Oh, I came a long
way to see you.

I want you to come
to Laramie with me.

Roany, I was planning on...

Yeah. We better get
going now.

Miss Essie's out there
waiting alone in the wagon.

Well?Come on.

As soon as I get my gear.

Slim says
you're really going.

Well, that makes
Slim right as usual.

But he can't tell me why.
You tell me, Jess.

- Why?
- It's simple, Andy.

I said I'd try
ranching for a while.

Well, I tried it for
a while, and I don't like it.

Now you're lyin',
aren't you, Jess?

That oughta do it.

Let's go see.

You all set?

Just about.

Well, let's go.

Come on, time to hit
the Glory Road.

You're going
with him, huh?

Because you want to, or
because he told you to?

I just don't think there's
