Thanks.

He'd've messed me up for sure
if you--Clint Wade.

Jess.

Long time.

Five years, three months,
fourteen days.

I thought you got 10 years.

I guess they don't make jails
like they used to.

I walked out,
didn't have to climb no walls.

In fact, warden gave me time off
for being a model prisoner,

and I made it my very first
business to find you.

Oh, wipe that look off
your face, Jess.

I didn't ride all this way
just to k*ll you.

That's nice.

You, uh, workin' here?

Let's have a look around.

[ music ]

Bad idea, Jess.

Give yourself a chance
to win, anyway.

Beside, you might just happen to
like what I got in mind for you.

I'm listening.

All right. We're going to Utah,
you're going to show me

where you caught up
with Roy.

What for?

Now, Jess, no jokes, please.

You know what for.

$80,000 in double eagles,
split two ways.

Oh, that gold shipment Roy
and the rest of your g*ng
made off with.

Nobody knows what happened
to that.

We do, you and me.

Look, Clint,
after I buried your brother,
I tore that place apart.

You think if I'd've found it,
I'd've left it there?

You just didn't know
where to look.

Now, Roy would've left a mark,
wouldn't mean nothing to you

or anybody else,
but I'd know it.

What kind of a mark?

I'll show you when we get there.

Why don't I just draw you
a map?

You find the gold
and it's all yours.

That's real funny, Jess.

You draw a map,
and as soon as I leave,

you get the law after me,
show 'em right where to look.

You served your time.
What do you care about the law?

Maybe they care about me.

They sure care about
the $80,000.

Look, it's been a long time,
about five years.

Maybe somebody else found it.

Like who?

Roy and three others got away.

He k*lled two of them.
That left old Tully Casper.

That old coot got away, he's
still running, more likely dead.

No, that money's mine,
yours and mine.

You better start loading those
supplies. From what you're
telling me,

it's gonna be a long trip.

You don't give me much choice.

I don't understand you, Jess.

No choice, you say.

Why, you can be alive and rich,
or dead and broke.

Make up your mind.

Let's go.

Now you're thinking straight.

There's a side of bacon out
here and some flour...

I wish you hadn't done that,
Jess.

I figured we'd ride out
friendly like partners.

Partners?

But when we get there,
you'll give me

the same thing Roy
gave his partners.

Maybe.

Let's move.

What for?

I'd just as soon die here
as out in Utah territory.

No, no, no, Jess,
you got it all wrong.

Tell you why.

You play along with me,

you might figure you got
a chance.

Here and now,
you're out of chances.

I'll give you about two seconds
to get on your feet.

[ music playing ]

[ music playing ]

Wouldn't want to try that again.

I might forget myself
and k*ll you.

Now, you wouldn't want that
to happen.

Now, let's see if you can handle
the three of those horses from
here on.

[ music playing]

I wouldn't move around much
tonight if I were you, Jess.

I ain't planning
on going anywhere.

Except maybe to sleep.

That's good.

Because the more you move
around,

the tighter that rope gets
around your neck.

A man could choke to death
before

he could work hisself free.

That's a real smart idea.

Take a nice fella
like you to figure it out.

Credit where credit's due.

Deke Beldon taught me that.

Ever hear of him?

I heard the name.

Yeah, Deke was quite a boy.

How far would you say it was
to that place

where you caught my brother?

I wouldn't say.

You're stalling me, Jess.

You answer straight
when I ask you a question.

How long do you think
it'll take us?

I don't know.

That's the truth.

There's a range of mountains
between us and the desert.

We have to find a pass
if we wanna get through 'em.

Think there might be a pass?

I heard of one once,
over at King's Peak.

I never been there.

If we can find it,
we can get through

the mountains in a couple
of days.

And if we don't find it?

I told you, I don't know.
Your guess is as good as...

How long did it take you to
cross the desert last time?

Three days.

I was lucky.

I was trailing your brother.
He knew all the water holes.

Well, you can find them again.

Well, I'm glad you're so
confident.

It's been a long time.

I'll put it this way.

You better find them.

And if I don't,
you'll be as dead as I'll be.

That really worries me.

Think it over, Wade.

Once we get out in that desert,

you might as well throw
that g*n away,

because it won't get you
a drink of water.

I'll be in charge then, whether
you like it or not.

We'll see who's in charge
after we get there.

You better rest now, Jess.

Don't have any wild dreams,
start thrashing

around in your sleep,
you might never wake up.

[ music playing ]

[ music playing ]

This looks like it could be
the pass you were talking about.

If it isn't, we'll never
make it over the top.

We'll make it,
one way or another.

I'll try climbing up that
rock, see what's up ahead.

[ music ]

CLINT:
What are you looking at?

I was just looking
at what we came across.

It's kinda hard to believe.

This arroyo widens out
as far as I can see.

Let's go.

[ music ]

This is no place to make a camp.

Even if it was, there's still
plenty of daylight left.

You talk too much.

Might not be much of a place
for some things, Jess,

but it's just fine for
what I'm thinking about.

That man following us,
he'll never know

what hit him once he tops
the rise.

It's all the news to you
that we're being followed?

It couldn't be your friend
Slim Sherman, or could it?

You cheer up.

I'll let him ride all the way in

where he can see you

before I k*ll him.

He's had a long ride looking
for you,

it wouldn't be fair to sh**t him
without letting him find you.

Just to be fair all around,
I'm gonna let you bury him.

[ music ]

Got a good look at him.

Kinda tall, ain't he?

Make a nice target.

[ music ]

Come on, cowpoke,
I got a b*llet waiting for you.

It can't wait all day.

[ music ]

That's fine.

Just a little bit closer.

[ music ]

[ horse clopping ]

That's just about close enough.

Get out, Slim!

[ music ]

DEKE: You lose, mister.

Ease off.

Just when you were doing
so good, too.

Well, cellmate,

looks like you got
yourself a wildcat here.

Beldon.

That's right.

Old Deke finally caught up.

What do you want me
to do with him?

I'll take care of him.

[ music ]

That's enough, Clint.Shut up.

I said that's enough.

Sit down.

About time we had
a little talk, cellmate.

How'd you know
where to find me?

Easy. Picked you up right
after you left the jailhouse.

I should've k*lled you.

You'd've been in trouble.

You need me, Clint.

I don't need anybody.

Who told you about the gold?

Nobody.

Well, maybe you did.

You're crazy. I never said
a word, not in five years.

That's right.

Not one word and that's
how you told me.

Hmm?

DEKE:
Eighty thousand in gold's gone,

nobody knows where it is, and
you don't so much as mention it.

You gotta know where it is.

At least have an idea of
takin' after it.

Then there's nobody else in
on the deal?

Just the two of us, and Harper,
he gets his cut.

JESS
That's mighty big of you.

Well, I always figure a man
is worth his hire.

You pay no mind
to Clint here.

You're in.

Are you giving me orders?

I'll give you powdered lead
if I feel like it.

Talk sense, Clint.

There's enough for all of us
if we work together.

Harper's out.

He dies easy or he dies hard,
after he takes me to the gold.

Takes us.

Or maybe I'll fix it
so he just takes me.

That won't do you no good.

Harper knows the trail
all right,

but he doesn't know
where Roy hid the gold.

That's what you need me for.

And you need me, Clint,

to keep this wildcat
off your back.

You couldn't handle him
out here.

What's gonna happen when you
take off across that desert?

All right, Deke, you're in.

And Harper.

As far as I'm concerned,

you can both take a
runnin' jump.

[ music ]

[ horses clopping ]

Jess?

Where's that water hole?

Maybe it's dry
and we passed it.

Maybe I'm lost.

Five years is a long time,
I'm not sure I remember.

Maybe this'll help you
remember.

Do that again,
and I'll make you a promise.

The three of us'll die out
here, 'cause I ain't moving.

Hard to handle, ain't he?

I can handle him.

Now, get moving.

And I'll make you
a promise.

You find us water
by sundown,

or I'll peel the hide off
of you an inch at a time.

You know something, Clint?

You're not gonna live long
after you find that gold.

I'll take my chances.

Sure, but you're not the boss.

Who says so?

Who's the boss here, Deke?

Who's got the g*ns?

That's all I wanted to know.

What are you so happy about,
Harper?

You got about three hours
to find us some water.

I can't draw water
out of a rock.

We make a dry camp tonight,
you'll wish you could.

I'll see to that.

[ music ]

There's the water hole,
over by those trees.

[ music ]

[ horses clopping ]

It's bone dry.

You brought us all this way,
and it's bone dry.

It wasn't dry five years ago.

Not my fault
it's dry now.

He's right, Clint.

It's not his fault,

it's just his tough luck.

No! I'd like to kick
his brains out too,

but I'm more interested
in staying alive.

Harper's gonna take us
out of here.

And he's doing a great job
of it.

Now, you get your bearings, boy.

Get 'em quick, you hear?

That way.

You could be lying.

Sure, I could.

But you won't know about that
until tomorrow or the next day.

If you can wait
that long to k*ll me.

We can wait.

[ music ]

[ crickets chirping ]

Afraid to go to sleep?

No, but maybe just
a little too smart.

Then you oughta be smart enough
to know that Clint

will k*ll you before he gives up
any of the gold.

I don't k*ll easy.

We can get there without him.

It's time to go?

No, it's still dark.

You're making a mistake, Deke.

Oh, what are you talking about?

What you're thinking about.

Harper's already been
there once.

He looked for it,
but he couldn't find it.

And you can?

I'm the only one who can,
and don't you forget it.

Sure.

[ music ]

Deke, open your big blue eyes,

or forever hold your peace.

I gotta k*ll you now.

You do,
and you better turn back.

Yeah, that's what I like to see.

A couple of coyotes
who deserve each other.

[ music ]

[ horses clopping ]

Deke!

[ horse clopping ]

[ horses galloping ]

No, we've got to have
him alive.

[ horse neighing ]

You think he's dead?

I'll make sure he is.

Do you want it first?No.

First, I want the gold.

He's still breathing.

Get the canteen.

I said get it.

[ music ]

DEKE: Clint, hold up.

Which way now?

It should be pretty close.

Up ahead, maybe.

All right, go on.

There it is.

[ music ]

All right, go on.

[ music ]

[ water spilling ]

How do you think
this place got here?

Looks like
the Spaniards built it,

forgot about it,

or maybe got buried here.

This bucket and the rope didn't
come in with the Spaniards.

This windlass has been fixed
since I've been here last.

You mean somebody's been here?

That's what I mean.

Maybe they beat
us to the gold.

Take it easy.

I'm the only one
who can find the gold.

But Harper's right,
somebody's been using this well.

I don't care.

They didn't drink it dry,
that's all I care about.

Show me where my brother
was k*lled.

He was holed up over
in that main building.

JESS: I wouldn't go that way.

Why not?Because you'll be walking over

your brother's grave.

I buried him there with the two
men he k*lled before I got here.

That's Roy right beside you.

[ music ]

You find it?

I found Roy's sign.

Give me a g*n.

What for?

Harper. We don't need him
no more.

You got a rope, Clint.
Use it.

All right,
keep him covered.

Well, it looks like
I'm the lucky one.

At least I know what's gonna
happen to me and when.

With you two, you're not gonna
be sure of anything.

Except that one of you
has to k*ll the other.

I wouldn't trade places
for the whole $80,000.

Anybody here ask you
to trade?

You got any prayers to say,
save your breath.

Get on with it.

You've been wanting this
for a long time, Jess.

Let's see how good
it fits you.

[ g*n shot ]

[ music ]

[g*n shot ]

[ music ]

You the fella them
two was trying to hang?

Yeah.

Thanks for making them eat dirt
for a change.

No thanks due.

I was trying to get
Clint Wade.

Put a b*llet in him, but this
old cannon

throws left at that range,
hard to figure.

Well, now that you don't have
to worry about the range,

you do something for me?

Maybe.

How about rolling that
cannon out of my ear?

Who's the other one with Clint?

Deke Beldon.

He was Clint's cellmate in jail.

Oh, so that's where he's been.

Who are you?

Name's Harper.

They made me bring him here.

You been here before?

Yeah. I trailed Roy Wade
here about five years ago.

You're the one
that k*lled ol' Roy.

That make us even any way
you can figure it.

How do you figure it?

Roy had me on guard
when he buried the gold,

then he k*lled Kelroy and Yates.

He was coming after me
when you rode in.

You Tully Casper?

You're a lawman, Harper.

I told you how I got here,
and I ain't no lawman.

My trouble with Roy Wade
was personal.

What'd Roy do to you?

k*lled a friend of mine.

TULLY: He k*ll him fair?

You know Roy better than that.

He shot him in the back.

And you ain't after
the money or me?

I didn't even know you
were alive.

I'd forgotten about the money
till Clint showed up.

Don't see no
sign of them two.

Reckon they're afraid to show
their white faces, in fear they
get 'em blown off.

Get up there.

Hurry it up.
You don't want to get
caught in here

with them two K*llers,
do you?

Just where do you want me
to hurry to?

Pick up them boards there, set
'em up against the wall right
there.

That b*llet go through?

Yeah. Give me a
hand with this.

I'd give a lot to know

who fired that shot
right about now.

They'll be showing
their head before long,

we can nail them
when they do.

Found this place,

Made it real homey. Spaniards
left a whole mess

of them old altar candles here
when they pulled out.

Ranch got some of 'em, plenty
more left.

What do you think of it?

It's just like home.

That tunnel there
leads to the outside again.

I built most of this stuff
with some old wine kegs
was left here.

No wine in 'em, though.

Tough break.

Yeah.

Five years is a long time
between drinks.

It's a funny thing.

A man keeps trying to remember
what whiskey tastes like.

Little thing like that can
drive a man crazy.

I'll bet it does.

You think I'm loco.

Don't try to smooth-talk
yourself out of it.

I can tell the way
you're looking at me.

What are you talking about,
Tully?

You built all this with just
your two hands,

kept yourself alive
for five years.

Well, you must have a good head
on your shoulders.

One mistake,
one little accident,

you wouldn't be sitting
here now.

I know how smart you are.

Oh, I wouldn't go so far
as to say that, Jess.

Well, I would.
I bet you haven't made

one mistake all the time
you've been here.

[ music ]

TULLY: What are you up to, Jess?

JESS: I'm gonna spoil your
record, Tully.

[ music ]

You didn't have to do that.

I just wanted to hold this r*fle
for a while.

There's no sense in that.

JESS:
Yeah, we'll see about that.

You could have asked me for it.

And you'd've just handed it
to me?

Sure, there's no b*ll*ts in it.

Them two I slung at Clint
were the last ones I had.

Why didn't you tell me
that before?

Make you feel any better knowing
what's gonna happen to you?

Clint Wade and Deke smoke us
outta here.

[ music ]

TULLY: You ain't going out there
with an empty g*n.

No, I'm just gonna look around
some, see

if I can locate Clint and Deke.

What good's it gonna do
knowing where they are?

Well, it could.

Clint's wounded and Deke's
carrying all the g*ns.

We handle a bluff right,

we just might come up
with the horses.

Or stretched out on
an ant hill somewhere.

Well, how healthy you think
it's gonna be if we let 'em
find us?

Sooner or later,
they're gonna wonder

why the sh**ting stopped
and come looking.

Oh, they'd never
find us here.

They don't have to.

They know we're here
someplace.

This building's got enough dry
wood in it

to make a real hot fire.

Always a chance
they wouldn't think of that.

I thought of it.

They took cover in one
of them end rooms.

I wish I could see something
move over there,

be sure where they are.

Ain't been a move since
the sh**ting.

I don't get it.

They're waiting for
one of us to move,

then they can pick us off.

It just don't make sense.

Nobody knows about this place,
way out here in the desert,

and somebody's waiting to take
a shot at us as we ride in.

You must've talked.

How could I talk?

Didn't even know where it was.

Can you see the horses?

Yeah, just where we left 'em.

They're plenty close enough.

I can drop anybody
tries to get to 'em.

Kinda thought Harper
might make that play.

[ grunts ]

Are you in trouble?

Yeah.

Gimme some water.

Shame to have you die on me now,
after coming all this way.

Maybe just to be
on the safe side,

you better tell me about
that mark of Roy's.

Where is it?

I'm burning up.
I need water.

Well's outside.

I ain't going out there
till after dark.

I can't wait that long.

You'll wait,

maybe even longer than that.

Course, now, you might
wanna buy a drink.

Water, nice and cool,

whole bucketful.

How 'bout it?

Get it.

I'll tell you where the gold is.

Talk first, then the water.

No.

I could get myself k*lled
getting from here to that well.

All right. You stay here,
I'll get it myself.

And never make it.

And you'll never find out
where the gold is, will you?

Take it easy.

I'll get it.

Never did care for
jackrabbit, anyway.

What's this about jackrabbits?

When I think of all the b*ll*ts
I wasted on them critters,

what I could do if I
had one b*llet right now.

[ music ]

At least we know where they are.

Let's go back
and use your other door.

Maybe we won't need
that b*llet.

This just don't make sense,
not a whisper.

But whoever shot you,
must have pulled out.

The water.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah, I almost forgot.

Tastes good.

Feels good, too,
don't it?

Where is it?

It's here.
Right here.

A strongbox!

CLINT: Yeah, that's it.

[ music ]

[ laughs ]

[ music ]

Hello, Clint.

Don't try to stop me, Jess.

I don't have to try.

The shape you're in,
you'll never make it.

Watch him.

I'll see where Deke is.

[ footsteps ]

[ g*nsh*t ]

Hold it, Tully.

[ g*nsh*t ]

You know, I'm about half
surprised at you.

Always said I'd
get me a Wade.

He was trying to get away.

You told me you didn't have
any more b*ll*ts.

That was the last b*llet I had,
positively.

You don't believe me?

If I'd've had two b*ll*ts,
you wouldn't be around
here to call me a liar.

Yeah, and I didn't have
to miss you either.

That makes us even again.

I'll watch that.

You water the horses.

[ music ]

Getting quite
a graveyard here.

Get a couple more and I'll
have to start putting up signs.

Lucky there ain't no more
Wades to keep you busy burying
all the time.

That ol' shovel is about wore
out, digging tunnels, cellar,

looking for that gold
ol' Roy hid.

Yeah, five years,
I guess, more than that.

I've been digging around here
and ain't found a smell of it.

It don't seem right,

some of it don't belong to me.

Well, that's how it is
with stolen money.

It just never belongs to you.

Five years, everybody's
forgotten about it.

Hey, Jess, why don't you
and me just

split it down the middle,

you ride east,
I'll ride west.

I never seen you.

We're gonna ride east
to the nearest town

and we're gonna
give the money back.

Oh.

And you can carry it over
to the packhorse.

All right.

Lash it down good
and tight.

Nothing been said about
what happens to me yet,

spent five years here.

We get the money back to
the people it belongs to.

They won't press charges.

Then you'll be a free man.

Free and broke.

That's the way it goes, Tully.

Kinda hate to leave
the old place now.

You think you can tear
yourself away?

Yeah, I guess so.

Don't you trust me, Jess?

Nope.

Let's go.

[ music ]

[ thud ]

[ music ]

You was right
not to trust me.

I'm a sidewinder
all the way.

Sidewinders rattle.So they do.

Turn around, boy, around.

That's me you hear rattling.

I'm rattling loud and clear.

[ music ]

TULLY: Bring it up,
citizens, I'm buying.

[ laughing ]

Just name your drinks, boys,
I'm paying for it.

Don't mind if I do, Tully.

Sugar, scooch, get, get.

What'd you wanna come
here for, Jess?

Now what do you think?

The money.

Oh, Jess.

I gave you a chance
when I could've k*lled you.

Yeah, and I could've split your
skull when I walked in here,

and I've been thinking plenty
about it

the past five days walking
on that desert.

Tully, you reach for that
g*n, I'll make you eat it.

Oh, Jess.

Now shut up.

How much money have you spent?

About $200.

What'd you do with the rest
of it?

Hid it, buried it.

Well, let's walk over
and talk to the sheriff,
then we can dig it up.

Oh, Jess, already we're out
a shovel digging for it.

You ain't going to beat me
out of it, are ya?

That's the way the world is,
Tully,

about time you found that out.

Nice while it lasted.

[ music ]
