Reporter: Ms. Harrington.
Ms. Harrington...

Okay. Not today. No comment.

Thank you, sorry.

J.c.: Is that his?

Yes, it is.

Cooper: The suspect's
name is Phil peroni.

At this point, we don't
know if the abduction

was a random thing or
some kind of revenge.

We know you
prosecuted him twice.

He got off both times
on technicalities.

- You think he still has Michael?
- We put an apb out an hour ago.

Right now we want to keep
peroni's name from the press.

Gaines: I think the
public has a right to know.

For god sakes, the man
never should have been let off.

J.c.: Well, as far as we know,

the boy hasn't been
hurt, Mr. Gaines.

Eddie: We don't want to give
him any reason to change that.

Ricciarelli: Lieutenant, I've got
the superintendent's statement.

He said he kicked peroni
out three weeks ago.

Came back in
here to fix the John,

- found all this kid's stuff.
- Did he get a forwarding?

What was he gonna do,
give him a good reference?

So as far as he knows,

peroni hasn't been
here for three weeks.

He wasn't supposed to be.

But yesterday the
super came back early.

Says he saw a guy
leaving this apartment.

Says he yelled at the guy,
but the guy just drove away.

- Did he get the car?
- He wasn't sure it was peroni's.

Said it was black.
And old Jaguar.

- An xk-e.
- We'll do a dmv search.

Get outta here.

Peroni in a ride like that?

He seems more like
the tricycle type to me.

Maybe he jacked it.

He Jacks kids not
cars, remember?

Yeah, I remember.
But it's our only lead.

Except for that.

He's got birds, right?

I mean, he's gotta feed them.

J.c.: So what are we gonna do,

stake out every pet
shop in Manhattan?

No, no, look, we'll
send out unis to question

all the pet shop owners, man.

I mean, one of 'em's gotta know.

All right. You ask
the loo, though.

And don't forget the dmv list.

I've gotta go meet my son.

All right.

Both: Butt out.

Chantal: So, j,
thanks for coming.

J.c.: Yeah, no
problem. Where's g?

Um, I left him at my
mother's so we could talk.

- Is that okay?
- Is there a problem?

Chantal: Um, so, I just
came back from g's teacher,

and she called me Mrs. Williams.

So, what's the problem?

Why didn't you just tell
her we're not married?

Well, I told her that, you know.

But evidently that's
not what he's tellin' her.

How long has my son been lying?

All year long, you know,

I think she thinks he's
tryin' to fit in or somethin'.

So we're gonna
have to talk to him.

Mm. Yeah.

So would you be willing
to wait here while I go

get him from my mother's?

Well, actually,

I'm on a case right now.

But maybe tomorrow.

All right. Okay.
I'll fix dinner.

- Oh, you gonna cook dinner?
- Chantal: Uh-huh.

- What you cookin'?
- Uh, chitlins.

- J.c.: Chitlins? Love chitlins.
- Yup.

- Is that okay?
- I'll be here.

Oh, I don't know.

Just, uh...

So, this is how you

- I don't know what this is.
- Hmm-mmm.

[Dramatic music playing]

G: Hey, mom.

Oh, hi, dad.

J.c., wait, what are
you going to tell him?

The truth.

After what I told him tonight,

I don't want him to think I
was lying about you and me.

But you weren't lying.

I mean, even if g
hadn't walked in,

one night doesn't mean
we're gonna be together.

- How do you know that?
- Because.

I mean, we didn't get married
when we did this ten years ago.

And even if we did it now,
it would only be for him.

Yeah, but did you see his
face when he opened the door?

He was shocked, but he smiled.

Well, of course he smiled, j.C.

It's what he wants more
than anything in this world.

You know, but think
about it, if you stayed,

would it be because of me?

Let him have his dream, j.C.

- Yeah.
- Just for tonight.

- Good night, Chantal.
- Good night.

[Dramatic music playing]

Eddie: Yo, where you been?

- Huh?
- J.c.: I had a long night.

Eddie: Oh, you got back
together with Sandy already?

Nope. I was with Chantal.

Nah! Chantal? You
gotta be kidding me, man.

Yo, get your mind
out of the gutter.

I had to deal with g.

And speaking of the gutter,
you talk to peroni's perverts?

Well, every freak on that list

confirmed that
they were with him

How are they so
sure about the time?

They take minutes.
You believe that?

Reynolds: Look, the boy-lover
meeting ended at 11:16.

Michael harrington's nanny
said that he disappeared at 11:28.

Yes, that's close,

but he certainly had
enough time to steal the child.

Are you telling me you think
he made it from the village

to central park in less than
twelve minutes, midday?

Cooper: Oh, come on, give
me a big fat break, richtman.

You know it could happen.

Especially if he left
the meeting early.

Lieutenant, your own
detectives confirmed those times.

Eddie: So what? They
could have been lying.

- Richtman: Five different men?
- Or maybe five co-conspirators.

I mean, think about it,
what kind of witnesses

does a room full of
pedophiles make?

Richtman: It doesn't matter,

because we're not
going to take your plea.

What the hell is? What's
goin' on here, man?

I ain't listenin' to
this! It's crazy, man!

Reynolds: Sir, do you
understand that unless you tell us

where Michael harrington
is we will be filing this

as a felony m*rder?

And whether or
not we find the body,

you will be looking
at a life sentence.

- You listen to me.
- Reynolds: Mm-hmm?

It's like I told her, okay?

I can't tell you where he is
because I didn't take him!

Hey, chill!

Cooper: Now, you listen
to me, you little weasel.

What about what they found?

How'd that stuffed animal
get in your apartment?

What, it just stroll
in by himself?

Richtman: Of course not. If
it really belongs to the boy,

then I have to
agree with my client,

someone is setting him up.

Okay, Maria, huh? All
right, let's get outta here.

- Look, we'll talk, all right?
- Okay.

Richtman: Look, I want to get this
boy back just as much as you do.

Then why couldn't you convince
peroni to cooperate with us?

How can he cooperate
if he doesn't have

- the information you want?
- That freak is playing you.

Richtman: Detective, that 'freak'
was in the hospital ward this morning

because 12 other inmates

spent their sleepy
time kicking him around.

So you tell me, if he
knows where that child is,

why didn't a night like
that make him talk?

Ricciarelli: Torres, dmv finally
sent over that list of jaguars.

- Peroni on that list?
- Ricciarelli: Negative.

Then it's no good now.

File it.

And lieutenant, St. Matthews
called about ten minutes ago.

They say they got a lost child.

Get a squad car.

Two years old. Black male.

Doctor: I saw him walk
into the east entrance.

At first, I thought he was
with one of the patients,

but then, one of the
nurses recognized him.

I looked at him. There
were no signs of injury.

All right.

As long as I'm
in there with him.

Woman: Michael,

I'm going to show you
some pictures, okay?

And if you see the
person who you were with,

just point him out
to me, all right?

Is that him?

Okay.

How about this man? Is that him?

And this man?

How about this man?

All right.

And this man?

Okay.

Was it this man?

Was this man the bad man?

Okay, very good,
Michael. Thank you.

He I.D.'d your suspect twice.

But I'm afraid the
rest of my observations

aren't going to help you.

- Why not?
- Woman: My expert testimony?

I can't say that that child

reacted to the
picture of an assailant.

What do you mean? I thought
you said he picked peroni.

Woman: The words were there.

But children that go
through that kind of trauma,

they react in two ways, either
very withdrawn or very reactive.

Michael harrington? I
can't say he was either.

- Is it enough?
- It'll have to be.

I mean, we can't
force Michael to talk.

And even if we
did, he's so young

- it might not help our case.
- Eddie: Yeah,

especially if he's wrong
and it wasn't peroni.

- What are you talking about?
- Well, you heard the woman.

Michael wasn't even
scared of those pictures.

So what?

What, now you believe this crock

about that creep
peroni being set up?

I'm just saying if harrington
won't let her son talk,

maybe it's because she's
got something to hide.

- Somethin' like what?
- Before this,

she's behind ten
points in the polls.

And then, boom, her son gets
kidnapped and she's ahead?

Ms. Reynolds, will you
excuse us a moment, please?

Cooper: Detective, even
if I bought your theory,

which I don't, there is no way

we can go after
Rita harrington now.

So it doesn't matter
to the department

that she isn't cooperating?

Or are we just scared
to call our candidate out?

No, what matters
to the department

is that we close the case.

So unless you have a
problem with catching a bad guy

and finding a little kid,

we're going to accept
the commendation

that the chief wants to give us.

Is that all right with you?

Am I talkin' to myself?

'Cause this doesn't
make any sense.

Ed, the case is closed.

And what you said about
Rita harrington, you're wrong.

Well, if this case is closed,
then I got one question.

If peroni was locked up,

who dropped Michael
off at the hospital?

What makes you think
somebody dropped him off?

Come on, j.C.,
like a two-year-old

is gonna wander
himself in there?

So next, you're gonna tell
me the doctor did it, right?

No. But for all we know,

he could be some
kind of witness.

Look, I know how you feel
about what harrington is doing.

But if it was anyone
else besides her,

you wouldn't even sweat this.

Doctor: All I remember is, I was
heading to the E.R. around 10:30.

I looked up at
the east entrance,

- and there he was.
- Was anyone with him,

- around him, anything like that?
- I definitely didn't see anyone.

- Doc...
- doctor: Maybe the cameras did.

guy driving an old Jaguar.

Did something happen to my car?

No, but we've got a witness
that saw a car like yours

outside a crime
scene two days ago.

Couldn't have been mine.

I've been in London
for the past month.

Well, could somebody
else have access to it

- or been driving it?
- Gaines: Patricia, hurry up.

- Rita's waiting.
- Oh, gaines.

Keep the girl!

[Upbeat music playing]

[Dog barking]

I'll be back.

Yo, ricciarelli.

Loo come back from the
commendation ceremony yet?

- Ricciarelli: Any minute.
- J.C.: What about that apb?

I sent it out. Tri-state
and all the airports.

Cooper: An apb
on who, detectives?

On Rita harrington's
campaign manager.

Cooper: Would either one
of you care to explain to me

what the hell is goin' on here?

Uh, while you were out
getting your nice little award,

we were doing some
crafty detective work.

Oh, let me guess. On
the harrington case?

Well, there was some videotape
at the hospital Michael was at.

When we followed
up on the trail,

it led to Jerry gaines.

Did you speak to him about this?

J.c.: No, 'cause he
was busy escaping.

But we searched his
apartment, and it seems like him

and his girlfriend were the ones
holding Michael for his mother.

Are you trying to
tell me that you think

that harrington set
this whole thing up?

We got witnesses
that saw her go inside

the two days Michael was there.

And we got these.

Looks like somebody
was tutoring the kid

on how to pick
peroni out of a line-up.

You are crazy if you think

that harrington set this
up to win an election.

Get outta here.

J.c.: We don't want
to believe this, either.

But think about it, if it
wasn't for this kidnapping,

harrington would have
never caught up to Reeves.

Oh, brother.

I just heard on the radio,

she's preparing her
acceptance speech.

It's not too late, loo.
We get a confession,

that's the only vote
we need against her.

Spokesman: We've just
received a call from Earl Reeves

conceding the election!

Please welcome our
new city council member,

Rita harrington!

[Cheers and applause]

Thank you.

We tried talking to
your campaign manager

this afternoon, Ms. Harrington.

Harrington: Really? About what?

J.c.: About your
son's abduction.

Now, we found out
that he and his girlfriend

were hiding him for you.

[Laughs]

Oh, my god, that's crazy.

How could you accuse
me of something like that?

Because it's the truth.

We're tracking
gaines down right now.

I can't believe this.

I would have to
be out of my mind

- to risk something like that.
- You must have known

Michael's testimony
wouldn't stand.

And even if you admit
you knew where he was,

what's the most we could
charge you with, huh?

- Filing a false police report?
- Actually, no.

That's all you could
charge nena with.

J.c.: I thought you
were on our side.

Now you're gonna stand
there and try to play us

like we're stupid?

You think I'm playing you?

- Prove it.
- Eddie: Yeah?

All right.

That was detective Chang.

They picked up
gaines at the airport.

They want to make a deal.

He's gonna turn you in.

He doesn't have a
thing to say against me.

Nothing, huh? Except the fact

that you used your own child
to help you win an election.

That's all any
jury needs to hear.

Why don't you
just give it up, Rita?

This is not fair to Michael.

I see a man in court who stabs
a sixty-five-year-old woman

in the chest for
a bag of tin cans.

And when he walks out
of jail on a technicality,

you know what he
did? He sued the cop

that tried to pull him off
that woman, and he won.

You gonna try and tell
us that's why you did this?

We are losing this
city, and there is no way

that I was going
to let Earl Reeves

keep pulling us down.

And send an innocent
man to prison?

Peroni isn't innocent.
You know that.

And if it wasn't really
Michael, sooner or later

it would have been
somebody's baby.

You can't arrest me, detective.

We're on the same side.

Not anymore.

[Applause]

[Dramatic music playing]

J.c.: Throw your rocks.

So, listen, after
I take you home,

I'm going to help you
with your homework.

Then I have to leave, all right?

G: Does that mean that you're

you saw last night,

and I know what I told

being together like that.

we were mixing up

how much we love
you for lovin' each other.

So that means that you're
not going to try to get married?

No.

But I promise you,

I will always be your father,

and she will always
be your mother.

Do I have to tell my
teacher the truth?

Well, you know you do.

And you can do that
when you're ready.

I think I'll wait.
