Our show
takes place in Las Vegas,
and tonight,
we are doubling down.
Typically, we have
one Penn and Teller trick,
but tonight, we're rolling
the dice and giving you
two Penn and Teller tricks.
Sounds like a jackpot to me.
Before we see tonight's
other magicians perform,
let's hand the stage over
to the two and only
Penn and Teller!

- The great magician,
Robert Houdin,
said that a magician
was an actor playing
the part of a magician,
playing the part of someone
with real magical powers.
In that sense,
Teller and I tend to do tricks
and not really magic.
We were thinking if we did
have real magical powers,
what would that look like?
I mean, most magic
isn't even desirable.
No one wants
to really cut a woman in half,
and certainly, no real American
wants to vanish
the Statue of Liberty.
[laughter]
Curing diseases
is the job of science,
and making money
is the job of the treasury.
If you had real magical
powers, it would be very small,
personal, and impossible,
and probably deal
with the biggest mystery
of all: life.
And if there were
real magical powers...
[scoffs]
They wouldn't be free.
Alyson, we're gonna show you
what we think real magic
would look like.
Look at Teller's hands.
But magic is
gonna cost something.

A small amount of pain.
- Uh-uh.
Uh...
- [winces]
- Oh.
- Just a prick
of the index finger...
Just a little hurt,
just a little cost.
He squeezes out
a single drop of blood.
A little pain, a little bit
of the life force.
We paid in blood,
and we got...
[all gasp]
- Aw...
- The drop of blood
is now another form of life:
a pretty little ladybug.
- Hi, bug.
- And this shows that the idea
of good and evil in real magic
is complicated.
To us, a small piece
of beautiful life,
to a garden aphid,
a nightmarish monster!

We think that's what real magic
might look like.

- For the last couple of years,
like most people,
I had so much time on my hands.
And for a magician,
so much time on your hands
is such a dangerous thing.
You never know
what you will come up with.
And I want to practice,
not lose my edge,
and stay sharp.
So I was waking up
every day in the morning,
having my breakfast,
a bowl of cereal,
and trying to come up
with a new trick.
But today,
I came up with a trick.
I'm gonna show you
my imagination was dry.
And I discovered that the idea
I'm looking for
was under my nose.
That's right.
I created
a perfect trick using cereal.
[calm music]
Alyson, I need your help.
- Okay.
- All right, I'm gonna take
a random cereal.

And we gonna make this cereal
a one-of-a-kind cereal, Alyson.
- Ooh.
- I want you
to tell me something
so I write it on the cereal.
- Love.
- Love.
Ah, that's super cute, Alyson.
- Thanks.
- All right, I'm gonna write...

- Aw...

Now I'm gonna be the first

Do you love magic,

I think the mix of both
is what gives it a new spark.

You've done a great job, Alyson.

Are all of your tricks
freakshow tricks?
- Not really.
But I like to put
this extra push, you know?
To make something
really memorable.
- And they love
this kind of stuff,
especially Penn.
- Exactly.

You know, we're thinkin'
that maybe you aren't in Dubai.

We really, really wish
that you could be

not just because
we'd like to meet you,
but also because
as George Carlin said
about the class clown...
He said,
"The goal of the class clown
is to make the girls throw up."
And I think
if you'd have been here,
you could've got
Alyson actually sick...

Only the video protected her,
and we would have loved that.
We would've loved

I also wanna say something
that you didn't say
that's very important
for me to say, and that is
"Do not try this at home."
When people are
watching your show...
- Yeah.
- They can try
the card tricks,
they can try the coin tricks,
but don't try anything
that Raymi does.
He is a professional.
Don't try that.
And a tremendous amount
of this, which,
as you predicted,
I absolutely loved,
is real and is carny stuff.
And you may know or you may not,
but Teller, for years and years,
has done the needles,
where he swallows a hundred
needles, six feet of thread,
brings the needles out
threaded, and some of that
uses the same method
you're using,
so we are conversant with that.
I will also say
that of all the props you used,
I mean, most of them,
almost all of them,
were totally real.
But one of the props you used
was a little bit different
than we expected.
You did a little something
to one of the props.
But I don't wanna say what it is
because it's such a good trick.
And boy, we loved it.
And boy!
We are not... we are not happy
you're not here in person,
'cause I really wanted
to see Alyson watch that.
But I don't think you fooled us.
- So Raymi, do they know
the secret to your trick?
- Yes, they did.

Everything I need to do
my magic is right there
inside my handbag.
In fact,
my entire life's in there.
I'll show you what I mean.

If anyone goes into my bag

I know instantly
what they've taken.
I'm like
a psychic security guard.
So I thought, seeing
as I've come out all this way,
why not test
that theory out today?
So I managed to drag away
four random volunteers
from those Vegas slot machines,
and they're gonna help me out.

And this is what's gonna happen:
one at a time,
they're gonna go up to the bag,
they're gonna take
a look inside,
remove an item,
and pop it behind their back.
Oh, there is something in there
I'd like to hold onto.
It's my shopping list.
I'm gonna need that.

Now, whilst they're doing that,
obviously, I'm gonna be turned
away so that I can't see.
I'm just gonna be over here,
powdering my nose.

We were constantly trying

So how did you become
a professional magician?
So Alan was a magician
when I met him, and I wasn't.
So, um,
I'd never met a magician before,
and he started
showing me some tricks,
and I found that's pretty cool.

- And I started going to shows
with him,
helping him set stuff up.
And I thought, "Mm,
maybe I can have a go at that."
- Do you find it hard,
working in a business
dominated by men?
- You'd think that I would.
But I've been welcomed
with open arms.
I just wish there was
more women in magic in general.
- Yeah.

I'm working to change that
on stage and off.
I used to have
a kind of stage fright.
I learned all the moves,
but I had no faith
in my abilities.
Then I met a truly
great magician from Spain.
We hit it off, and somehow,
I ended up being his manager.
As a manager,
you have a career in magic
that belongs to someone else.
Night after night,
you see all the secrets.
My stage fright wore away,
and my confidence grew.
I began performing again,
and here I am.
This idea of community between
magicians is important to me.
I see Mexico as a meeting
place where the big talents
from everywhere come together
from all over the world.
So I carry many flags with me,
but tonight, mostly,
the flag of Mexico.

for the first time.
Like,
even, like, couple years ago,
I was in Nepal with some rocks
playing with childrens
up in the mountains,
and watching how magic
can communicate and connect.

- And it's amazing, no?
- That's so wonderful.
- That was hard to say
in English, but...

That first thing
with the queens is really nice,
and the psychology behind that
is also really, really nice.
And then, when you get
to the second part,
our attention
gets split on the cards
as we're going back and forth,
and you're having Alyson
do this, do that,
do this, do that,
and the audience
has a lot of fun with that.
Alyson has a lot
of pressure on that,
and it is a pain
in the a*s for us.
There was so much
going on there.
We had to sit here and
reconstruct the whole thing,
and say,
"Wait a minute," you know?
"He's doin' some stuff
while Alyson's workin',
"while Alyson's
struggling through that
and our attention
is shifted there."
It took us a lot
to put it back together.
And it's a really nice routine.
But when we were able
to put it all back together,
we don't think you fooled us.

Come on up here.
Now, we're gonna try to fool
you with your own props.
- Oh.
- We have three
Piffin' Ain't Easy cups.
- [laughs]
- These are expensive.
- Yes, they are.
And we've got,
of course, without a doubt,
a Fig Newton.
Now we're gonna turn our backs.
We won't look.
So you can decide among you
how you're gonna do this,
but follow
our directions carefully...
One, two, and three.
We'll go turn our backs here.
Okay, Mac and Piff.
We're not looking.
Put the fig cookie under one
of the Piffin' Ain't Easy cups.
[suspicious music]
Have you done that?
- It is under the cup.
- Okay, now, the two cups
that do not have the cookie,
the two cups without
the cookies, switch those.
♪ ♪
- Switched.
- Okay, now take
any two of the three cups
and switch those,
but tell us which they are...
Any two.
- Yeah.
- Which ones... which ones...
- We're switching two and three.
- Two and three
have been switched.
Now do that again...
Any two cups.
Switch 'em, tell us which ones.
- One and three.
- One and three.
- One and three.
Okay, now clean up
any crumbs.
And are you all set...
- Oh, that's my theory.
Ah, there goes my first theory.
[laughter]
- We're gonna turn around now.
Is that okay?
- Yeah.
- Uh, yeah.
- Now Teller
will magically divine
where the fig cookie is
under
the Piffin' Ain't Easy cups.
[eerie music]
He's gettin' a vibe.
Can you see him
gettin' the vibe?
[ding]
- Oh!
- And there is the fig cookie
under
the Piffin' Ain't Easy cup.
But you know, guys, we really
want you to win the trophies.
So we're gonna do it again.
- Whew.
- And just in case
you're thinking
that maybe we were peeking,
we're gonna have
one of you do the trick,
and the other one
will police us.
- Oh, okay.
- Okay?
So Mac, you're gonna
make sure we can't see,
and Piff, you're gonna
do the trick alone, okay?
Now, set back here, please, Mac.
- Yes, sir.
- And just stand between us.
Face the audience,
and just put
your hands over our eyes.
- There and there.
- Very nice hand cream,
very nice.
- Oh, thank you.
- Good, good, good.
Okay, Piff, put the Fig cookie
under one
of the Piffin' Ain't Easy cups.
[suspicious music]
- Done.
- Now switch the other two.
♪ ♪
- Done.
- Now take any two
of the three cups
and switch them,
but tell us
which ones you've done.
♪ ♪
- I switched two and three.
- Two and three.
And Mac, is he all done,
crumbs cleaned up?
- He seems to have
Hoover'd it up.
- [chuckles] Okay.
You can, maybe, let us see now.
Good.
We'll both go back,
and over here...
[laughter]
Let Teller do his work.
[eerie music]

all: Oh!
- Now we're gonna do it
one more time.
- [laughs]
- Okay?
And this time, we're gonna let
Mac do it.
And Piff, you can come back
and be the enforcer
and make sure that we can't see.
- Okay.
- Okay?
So come back here.
Same thing as before.
I think
you know the whole thing.
Here, Piff.
Stand between us.
Face the audience.
Okay.
And Mac, put the fig cookie
under one
of the Piffin' Ain't Easy cups.
- Yes, sir.
- Now switch the other two.
[suspicious music]
- Other two switched.
- Now pick
any two of the three cups,
and switch those, and tell us
which ones.
- Switching one and two.
- One and two.
Now make sure
there are no crumbs.
♪ ♪
And Piff, you can take your
hands down whenever he's done.
And we'll come back
over right over here.
And go ahead, Teller.
Work your magic.
[eerie music]
♪ ♪
- [gasps]
- And there is the fig cookie
right there.
And that's our trick.
Now guys, if you can figure out
how we did this trick,
you're gonna get the trophies
that you've wanted for so long.
If you can't...
- At least five minutes.
[laughter]
- So please back to your seats.
[cheers and applause]
Piff the Magic Dragon
and Mac King!
[indistinct]
- These are two
really smart guys.
- They're really smart.
They really know magic
really well,
and they know us really well.
They know the kind of thing
we would do.
- And how did you go about
picking this particular trick?
- This is a trick
we hope will fool them.
It's a little bit... it's...
What we love about it is,
it's very, very simple.
- Uh-huh.
- You can see it.
You can lay it all out there.
It's very, very simple.
But it is remarkably complex
in how it's done.
And that's what we wanted to
do, because we wanna give them
a good chance at the trophy.
But we don't want them to feel
like we just handed it to them.
- Right.
- They would feel cheap.
- Okay, Penn and Teller,
let's go to Mac and Piff
and see if they can bust you.
- Hello, boys.
- [chuckles] Hello.
- Hey, fellers.
- We both run tight magic
organizations, don't we all?
- Oh, yeah, we do.
- We all do shows daily
on the Las Vegas Strip.
But I believe only one of us
monitors
our own merchandise sales.
[laughter]
And so it was
that I happened to see
eight of those fine mugs
reasonably priced
depart the Piff the Magic
Dragon storage facilities
to a familiar address
that I happened to recognize.
[laughter]
So a mug trick
was definitely in the cards.
Now when Mac came on this show
the very first time, he said
that if you fool Teller,
you've fooled Penn and Teller.
- Uh-huh?
- I believe I can say
with confidence
that if you fool Mac,
you fool Piff and Mac.
[laughter]
Mac, did they fool you?
- I don't believe they did.
I've actually seen
this trick before.
My gardener, Martin...
[laughter]
- Good guy.
Good guy.
- Did that.
How about you... have you?
- [exaggerated] Hmm.
[laughter]
[exaggerated] Hmm.
- Did that code
mean anything to you guys?
- [exaggerated] Hmm, uh...
[laughter]
They not only coded
one thing that had a code,
they coded both things
they could've coded.
We did not fool them,
and that means,
in this backwards world,
that the trophy comes down.
[laughter]
[applause]
And there's only one trophy,
but Teller magically...
- Oh!
- Hey, there's two!
Yay!
- Two trophies!
What an act!
- And they weren't fooled!
- [laughs]
