Daly: Tonight, the most exciting
phase of "The Voice" continues.

Blake:
You're gonna see the gloves come off.

It's gonna get brutal.

Daly: The battle rounds are under way.

Our superstar coaches
have narrowed down their teams,

picking the singers
they want to represent them

in the live shows.

This season's winner could be
on anyone's team.

Daly: So far, Adam has
a pair of experienced vocalists,

Blake's team is a mix of unique singers,

Christina is all about diversity,

and Cee Lo so far
has been picking big voices.

Tonight, 12 more artists
will take the stage,

but only six will move on
to perform for your votes.

In the battle rounds,
everybody's out to win.

Ashley: I'm not going down
without a fight.

Jermaine: This is my moment.

Erin M.: All I need is to get
onstage in front of the world.

Daly: It's the most difficult
challenge yet...

I didn't expect this to be
as close as it is.

...when each coach pairs their own artist

to battle one another.

Are you ready to hear who you're battling?

They'll train them with the help

from some of the biggest names in music...

Stop. Don't come out of character.

I need you to dig into it.

If you've got it, show it.

Daly: And ultimately,

make the tough decision
of who stays and who goes home.

Seriously, I wish it wasn't that good.

It's very difficult for me to do
this, but let me just be critical.

I love you both, and I hope you
don't hate me after I do this.

The winner is... hmm.

Daly: And just when you thought
you've seen it all,

a battle that shocks everyone...

It's probably the most unique pairing.

That was so weird!

The battle rounds continue

The eight remaining members of team Adam

are gathered,
waiting to hear their coach's

next battle pairing.

This is it. It's do or die now.
It is a competition.

Someone is gonna go home afterwards,

but I think the more you guys
can exude good energy out there

and perform your asses off,

the better the battle rounds are gonna be.

For this battle...Pip...

Basically, your blind auditions

is why I wanted you guys to be together.

I loved the fact
that you guys sang old songs

that were so classic and so tough to do.

So I wanted to choose a song
that was new but felt old...

"You Know I'm No Good," Amy Winehouse,

was what came to mind.

I don't know the song entirely that well,

so I'm a little nervous about it.

Nathan: In the blind auditions,

four chairs turned around for Pip,

and only one turned around for me.

I would have rather battled anybody else.

Daly: During the blind auditions,

19-year-old Pip blew the coaches away

with his performance
of "House Of The Rising Sun."

Daly: All four! Oh, my God! No!

All four!

Daly: And he got to pick his coach.

Cee Lo: You got an old soul,
Pip, with a cool irony

to turn around, and it's you,
so young and fresh-looking.

You are what epitomizes the show,

because I had no idea what
to expect when I turned around.

I'm just gonna have to go with Adam,

'cause he was the first one.

Daly: 23-year-old former
competitive swimmer Nathan Parrett

overcame a lot before
getting the courage to audition.

When my father found out that
I'm g*y, he took it pretty hard.

I haven't spoken to my father
in a few years.

♪ Some people call me the space cowboy ♪

You have a powerful voice,
but I think it needs refinement.

I see you as the underdog.

I think you can definitely pull
out something really awesome.

Daly: Now Adam meets with Nathan and Pip

to rehearse their song.

What's up, fellas? How you doing?

How you doing? What's going on, sir?

Pip: I started off
with such a powerful song

that it's kind of gonna
be hard to one-up myself,

but I know I can do it
if I set my mind to it,

and I have to work on this so hard.

♪ Meet you downstairs
in the bar and heard... ♪

Pip is amazing. I love Pip.
He hasn't had a sour note.

♪ I told you I was trouble... ♪

Nathan: Going into this battle round,
I feel like he has an advantage

because he gave such a good performance.

I absolutely have a lot to prove
to everyone and Adam.

♪ Thinking of you in the final throes ♪

♪ this is when my buzzer goes ♪

Nathan, you're so much better
than your audition.

Dude, my audition was awful.
You're audition was not good.

The adrenaline definitely
got the best of me.

That's what prevents a lot
of great singers from doing it,

but it's not gonna prevent you
from doing it.

Pip: I think Adam was favoring
Nathan just a little bit.

I think he was so surprised
about how Nathan

just was totally different
than his blind audition.

So, I'm kind of nervous about that.

Daly: The next morning, Adam brings in Pip

to rehearse with his adviser,
multi-platinum recording artist

Alanis Morissette.

- Hi.
- Hi.

Pip: I was like, "Oh, my God."

"You're Alanis Morissette. Hi."

♪ I cried for you on the kitchen floor ♪

Do you think, like, at the end and stuff,

would it be too much if I took it up more?

I'm a fan of being faithful,
to a certain extent,

- to the original, melody-wise.
- Yeah, yeah.

I think restraint is so exciting.

Yeah.

When you're singing it,
if you're thinking,

"wow, I'm not putting enough
flowery stuff in this,"

that's kind of great.

Okay. I've been in a lot of shows.

Involved in musical theater a lot.

So, I definitely need to not over-sing

and make sure that I don't do all the runs

and everything that I'm used to doing.

Daly: The next day, Nathan meets
with Adam and his adviser,

R&B producer and artist Robin Thicke.

- How's it going?
- Good to see you.

I walk through the door,
and there's Robin Thicke,

and I'm loving it.

It was awesome.

During rehearsal, physically,

I was resorting back to my nervous tics...

putting my hands in my pockets,
crossing my arms.

I think what if you stood right
here in the middle of this carpet

so you could feel the band behind you?

Here's your stage, you know what I mean?

Get your hand out your pocket.
Stand there and be fearless.

You got nothing else to lose,
so lose it right here.

All right. Here we go.

Way to go. Come on.

I'm trying to instill confidence in him,

'cause he has nothing
to feel insecure about.

To me, your biggest demon to tackle

is gonna be getting yourself to
be confident about what you do.

You have every right to be,
'cause you got a great voice.

Nathan: I feel a lot more comfortable

after rehearsing with Adam and Robin.

To win this battle, I'm going to
have to exude confidence

and let the voice do the talking.

Daly: With their battle fast approaching,

Nathan and Pip head to the stage
for one final rehearsal.

Damn. So good.

I wasn't sure about you, Nathan,
but I'm 100% sure about you now.

You're so good.

You know, we talked about

how you were the underdog in this
situation, and you were. Yeah.

That's not the case anymore,
so you need to know that, too.

Pip: Nathan had a lot of room to grow,

in what he got to show Adam,
and especially now,

at this point, and I think
that my bar is set really high

and that I'm gonna have to
top that somehow.

It's gonna be really,
really great. I can't wait.

You're making my life real difficult.
[ Laughs ]

Nathan: He told me
that I'm no longer the underdog.

Daly: T was with everything on the line,

it's time for Nathan and Pip to battle.

Pip: You can see the improvement
in Nathan,

but it's gonna be much harder
to see improvement in me.

I have to put everything I have
out on that stage,

and I know that I can win this.

Nathan: Going into this battle,

I have way more to prove than pip does,

but Adam said
we are on a level playing field,

so focusing on this performance.

I'm gonna be really confident
on that stage.

I think the tables have turned.

two young guys with old souls.

strong, clear voice

that's powerful,

I realized that Pip's the guy
that, he can do everything.

I lean towards Pip on this one.

as having done Broadway
or something before.

like you have more stage experience,

and you definitely came across
more confident, but, Nathan,

even though you came across as
more nervous in your presence,

your voice commands its own attention.

I think you took a bit of her approach,

but, you know, in my opinion,
I'd say Nathan stole it, to me.

I think 100% is the limit.

and I felt like it was your

that Jonathas sounds like

and I agree with that,
and that makes me very nervous.

Daly: During the blind auditions,

Ashley De La Rosa proved to have
a big voice and a big heart.

music and charity.

I do a lot of food drives
and clothing drives

because it's important to build awareness

of what's going on in the world.

give me the satisfaction that,

bring me to America for nothing.

definitely psyching me out.

Jonathas: I felt like Ashley

I've never felt so blessed in my life.

Because, Jonathas, you just sink
right into feeling so natural

or a Chris Brown song,

it is that much more important

for you to be able to find ways
to make it your own.

That came up, on Usher and Chris Brown,

so it's a little hard for me

to kind of not be
so much them in the song.

Ashley's young, and she hasn't
quite had the experience,

so let's do this.

Let's you and I just interact
up here for a second.

I wanted him to feel a
female energy up there with him,

because he's a very
solid performer on his own,

but there's a give and take that comes

when you have to share
a stage with another artist.

When I was singing to Christina,
I did get lost a little bit

and just kept looking into
those beautiful blue eyes.

the only thing you don't do,

Know your part so well

that you can engage with her and
listen to what she's singing,

you know, engage into her eyes
all the time.

Jonathas... amazing talent,

just as long as you don't get
confused about your character.

But sometimes, you can get so
lost into your own performance,

you forget that there is somebody
standing right there with you.

Daly: The next morning,
Ashley rehearses her song

You have the capability
of being much stronger

than I think you give yourself credit for,

but the stage is somewhere
where you need to be extroverted

and get the audience to connect with you.

I'm a very introverted person,

and jonathas is a really big performer,

and I feel like sometimes,
he overpowers me.

He sounds so much like Usher.

That's something that kind of
can work against him.

I don't want to hear somebody
imitating somebody.

I want to hear somebody new,

so you really have an opportunity

to let us hear you and what you are.

If she can get onstage
and just let herself shine,

she's gonna be really compelling
and really hard to beat.

Ashley: I am in no way
taking this for granted.

This is honestly the best thing
that's every happened to me,

so I'm just ready to give it my
all and to really work for it,

and I'm not going down without a fight.

you have a natural rhythm
with your shoulders.

Dip more into that,
so when he's singing to you,

give him that more of a dig-in

but as far as range goes, even
though you got pitchy sometimes,

you were trying some things,

We invited insurance worker Katrina Parker

to the blind auditions,

giving her a second chance

Katrina: We discovered that I had
mold in the home I was living in.

It made me sick for two years.

Two years of not being able to sing.

Daly: ...landed her a spot on team Adam.

It was different,
and I love that about you,

- and I'm happy to coach you.

interesting rasp to your voice

and an interesting tone.

allowed you to sort of

be as strong as maybe

The thing that I noticed about you,
Katrina, that I really liked

is you're more
of a multi-dimensional singer.

It almost sometimes reminded me
of an Adele-ish quality.

So, you definitely
owned this song tonight.

Angel, like, you came alive
later in the record,

like, you know, that second
verse, when you took the lead.

But other than that, I was just
watching your body language.

I thought that maybe
you were just uncomfortable.

That has nothing to do with your
voice, but I want to be able

to see confidence and charisma and swag.

So, Katrina, you came in
just completely confident,

and you were consistent all throughout.

This was your song. This was your battle.

It looks like if you could

Well, you want to try

They're both very dramatic,
very emotional performers.

This is a song that can bring out the most

those highs and lows,

and sometimes, I'm kind of
just like the big, like, bull,

My concern in this round is,

by trying to stand out in the
song, that I'm gonna go too far.

My biggest fear, going up against Erin,

is that she's gonna get up there
and own the stage,

but I think Blake wants to be moved,

and whoever gets to him more that way,

Just from meeting you right now,

to people in the crowd.

That's what I want to do when I perform...

singing to the crowd
and making them feel the song,

when to really have that moment

That break is pretty, that "we
belong," but come off of that.

If you do that, that'd be pretty,

to show some of that sweetness
in your voice,

and it's got an interesting tone to it

I didn't know what
you were gonna sound like

whenever you came in on that second verse,

but when you did, it felt
really good and really strong,

and it was very consistent.

Stylistically, I think I just
gravitated more towards Erin.
