for a spot in the live shows.

Daly: But in the end, the artists' fates

were left in their coaches' hands.

and opera artist Chris Mann.

Adam chose former
"Mickey mouse club" member

Tony Lucca.

Blake picked country singer Raelynn

and alternative rocker Jordis Unga...

And Cee Lo decided on
power vocalist Cheesa.

Tonight the battles continue
as our four superstar coaches

pair their own artists against each other.

The outcome is gonna provide me
with an incredibly strong team.

Here we go.

I want the best of the best
going into the live shows.

Daly: To help prepare them for battle...

Christina: I'm ready to give my team

all the tools they need
to win the competition.

Daly: Each coach recruited

some of the biggest names in music.

Lionel: I know how important
it is for these kids

to have somebody guiding you.

Daly: The only thing
in their way is each other.

Charlotte: I want to destroy her.

If I win this, that'll be a victory

for everyone
that's ever overcome anything.

Daly: Tonight, 12 more artists
will take the stage,

but only 6 will move on to the live shows,

and be one step closer

to a recording contract

Geoff: Christina paired me with Sera Hill.

Sera is a very, very,
very powerful singer,

but I'm not intimidated at all.

Daly: Back in the blind auditions,

and that's what I want to be for my kids.

of the blind auditions,

I was extremely nervous.

this would be the pinnacle

not only myself, my kids down.

because she and I have
very similar tones in our voice.

Daly: As a young teenager,

Charlotte Sometimes thought
she'd never sing again.

Charlotte: When I was 14,

I got diagnosed with condylar resorption,

and they told me
that my jaw had disintegrated.

My jaw was wired shut
for about five months or so.

Daly: But she defied all odds,

getting the attention of all four coaches,

and picked Blake as her coach.
Charlotte Sometimes.

Blake: It truly warms my heart,

because she got a four-chair turnaround,

and for her to decide to go
with me is a huge compliment.

Daly: Music camp counselor
Lex land's nerves

almost got the best of her.

Lex: The thought of the celebrity coaches

and cameras and the giant live crowd

is really intimidating
and kind of terrifying.

She has this expl*sive
personality that I love,

and I think that is why

people are gonna be so attracted to her.

The difference in y'all's personalties

is probably where
the actual battle really is.

Even though you're just doing your thing,

it ends up making it look like
you're just trying to take over.

That's where y'all have to find
that happy medium, I guess.

Charlotte: I never like
to show off just to show off,

but that's what my heart wants to do.

I hope that I can tone myself
down a little bit.

And I would say, to add to what you said,

some of the words... I would
pull them out a little bit more

instead of cutting them
off really quickly. Okay.

Whitney: Okay, so, Kim obviously

has over two decades of experience on me.

What do you think
about my voice or my style

that I should emphasize

that could help me win the battle round?

You have to make sure that you
do not try to overpower her.

Adam: Whitney was very caught up
in being confident.

She wanted to know all of the secrets

in the "how to be successful" handbook,

and, sadly, that does not exist.

But there are a lot of things
that you can be told

that will help you along.

I think just be present.

Part of what is appealing
is someone being present,

regardless of how old they are.

which I can relate to.

Watching her blind audition, she just...

she owned that stage.

and she might fall at any second... Yeah.

And that's where the magic lies.

If she loses some of the emotion

because she's just singing so big,

she's not gonna have any buildup.

But I need to hear that tension

one of my biggest influences.

a lot of really cool dynamics

that you can play with.

Originally, why I connected
with you was because I felt

the real artistry
that exudes from both of you.

Daly: Later in the afternoon,

Lindsey and Lee meet with Christina

to prepare for their big battle.

Christina: I gave Lee and Lindsey

because of the kind of textures
that their voices have to offer.

The range that the song has

gives them a lot, vocally, to explore.

Do you know what you're singing

for those in-between parts, or no?

I thought we might listen
to the song today,

but I haven't heard this song
in like 10 years.

Really?

Lee: Nirvana is one
of Lindsey's favorite bands,

and she knows the tune and she's shown

that she's got this act together
more than I do.

She's already come into it
with this really cool angle,

whereas I am still
kind of learning the song.

Lindsey, I love the little
things that you're doing

to completely make it different
and make it your own.

When there are so many different options,

you should really try

to learn what your favorite is
and stick with it

so that on the day of, you're not like,

"oh, I should have stuck with that idea."

Lindsey: Lee's got a really cool voice,

and I think I put
a lot of pressure on myself

to be, like, a skilled
and entertaining singer.

But maybe I just have to sing
the way I sing

and don't try to overdo it.

You have to, you know, kind of
get into the song first.

When you're back in your
hotel room tonight,

really study the structure
of the melody. Uh-huh.

That's basically what
you have to get down,

and then you can
put your own style into it.

Christina: As a performer, you
want to connect with this song,

and that's the biggest thing

that I wanted to impose upon Lee today,

was to get in there and find out
what it means for him.

These are kind of bizarre, poetic,
really interesting lyrics.

"I wish I could eat your cancer."

That means something
very specific to Kurt.

And he sold it when he sang it.

You need to sell these lyrics to me. Yeah.

Jewel mentioned I should
understand the lyrics my own way

so that I could sing with more conviction

and really make it my own.

Pronounce it enough

that we can understand what you're saying.

Am I not pronouncing the words enough?

Mnh-mnh.

I think I have my work cut out for me

and really have to pull something out

to... to pull ahead.

Jewel: There's a lot of things
I like about Lee.

To me, the most compelling thing,

however, is what's at stake for him.

This is one of those
do-or-die moments for him.

Is he gonna be a Baker
the rest of his life,

or is he gonna step up to the plate?

It's up to him to find out.

Daly: The following day,
Lindsey meets with Christina

Oh, my gosh. Wow. Good to see you.

One thing I do notice...

you have a tendency

to get so in your own head space
about your notes.

And you so feel what you're doing,

but it's all in your head.

I need you to bring that out
more through your eyes.

Lionel: Listen to your lyrics.

And, then, so, when
you're telling the story

of how you feel inside...

but then when you finally realize,

"hey," that's the person right there.

Lionel: Lindsey is very shy.

But you've got to be engaged.

So, you've got to make
an awareness factor here.

You know, I just want her
shyness to not get overwhelmed

'cause you can see
that she's out of her...

out of her confidence element.

"Hey" is not...? Hey?

Yeah, those are key words to be like, "this
is the chorus." Those are key words.

It was very quiet and soft and confident,

and every now and again,

the lighting would have you
look like Jesus a couple times.

So, that was cool.

I like it when something is unique
and inventive and original,

and the entire performance was.

But no one really outshined
or out-sung the other.

I just thought that
it was a great performance.

I ended up enjoying it as a whole thing.

kind of had me staring at you

a couple times, so...

So maybe I would go with
Lee, 'cause he was blessing me.

Well, Cee Lo found Jesus today.

Yes.

I did not find Jesus, but I did find

an incredibly kind of
delightfully creepy performance.

I really liked it. It was...

It was, like, really odd,
but in a great way,

and I think you should be totally proud

of doing something on the show
that hasn't been done yet.

Lee, I told you initially
when I heard you sing

that it was just otherworldly.

It's just a strange thing.
Maybe I'd pick Lee.

and did a great rendition

I'm a fan of both of you guys,

through and through.

but you had no idea that I was gonna throw

And I just kept saying,

And you had some soul in it.
You put Lee into it.

And I'm so proud of you
for having done that.

And, Lindsey, you did what I asked

in experimenting with your falsetto.

I love your tone with the...? And I?

You're dropping down on those notes.

such a fan of both of you, so...

Jamar: The minute Cee Lo said my name

and then called Jamie, it was
like my heart just dropped.

I was like, "ugh, that's my boy."

You two are gonna be singing

Jamar: All right.

Yeah.

Jamar, since day one,
has been a friend of mine.

But at the same time,
you know, I need this,

and I want this just as much as he does.

I was inspired by the both of you.

I really just think that your experiences

could really bring this song to life.

Daly: During the blind auditions,

Chicago native
and sandwich maker Jamie Lono

took a risk,
singing a Johnny cash classic.

Daly: And it paid off, as he
landed a spot on team Cee Lo.

I can't believe this, man.
I make sandwiches for a living,

so this is awesome.

Daly: New York City native Jamar Rogers

came into the blind auditions

having learned from his past mistakes.

Jamar: Six years ago,
I got clean off of crystal meth.

I also found out, because of my drug use,

I was H.I.V.-Positive.

Daly: At the blind auditions,
he amazed Cee Lo,

singing the white stripes'
"seven nation army"...

Jamar:? You, you, you, you?

Daly:...Making a dream come true.

Man, will you join my team?

You're the reason
I auditioned for this show.

Daly: Jamar and Jamie meet with Cee Lo

to rehearse their song
for the first time together.

Jamie: I don't think I've ever
really heard something like Jamar.

He's an unbelievable vocalist.

My voice cracked.

That's the one thing you don't
want to happen, and it happened.

My mouth's getting really...
like, when I get nervous,

my mouth gets super dry.
Yeah, it's just nerves.

I want you to be heavy-handed
about this song

and really, really go in for the knockout.

You know what I'm saying? Yeah.

Cee lo: The song

it's just a timeless classic
record, you know, of course,

but the sentiment is, like, brand-new.

Whoever gets
to their moment of clarity first

may be the determining factor.

Daly: With his nerves still on edge,

it was time for Jamie

Cee lo: Okay, so,

and when it cracks, you begin to question

whether or not it's fragile.

Babyface: I think you just
have to loosen up a little bit.

What does this song mean to you?

My biggest struggle when I was growing up

was just believing in myself,

and this song pretty much sums that up.

I think that's great
that you can connect to it,

and I think you just
have to make us believe it.

Mm-hmm.

Jamie was nervous altogether.

He needs more confidence,

and I think it's gonna be a problem.

Daly: With the battle looming,

Jamie gets a chance to sit down
with his coach and adviser.

After, you know,
letting the nerves get to me,

how do I kind of turn it around

and show you guys
that I got what it takes?

I think your voice has
so much passion and everything

that you just need to do
what your voice tells you to.

Jamie: Babyface was really empathetic,

and it felt like he really, truly cared.

And that is really awesome
to find somebody like that,

especially as a mentor.

This should give you
just a bit of confidence.

There are a lot of
less-talented people than you

on the radio these days, so don't worry,

because you're a natural talent.

Jamie: To hear Cee Lo say
that I've got a lot of talent

was a complete load off my shoulders.

Daly: The next day,

it was time for Jamar
to rehearse with Cee Lo

and his adviser, R&B star ne-yo.

What's going on, brother? What's up, sir?

Man, I'm doing great.

Jamar: Ne-yo is a great songwriter,

and if I'm blessed enough

to get the opportunity
to have him produce me,

you have not seen an excited guy yet.

I can do that.

Jamar: I never thought
that I would get to actually

sing a duet with Cee Lo.

I feel like the luckiest guy in the world.

Ne-yo: One thing that I'll point out

is that this song is more
emotion than technicality.

There's a lot of emotion in his voice,

and if he can learn
to wield that and use it,

he might be unstoppable.

There's a lot of [Grunts] in your voice.

This song needs to flow, you know?
Okay. It's real.

It's just opening up.

So, that's where you need to go. Okay.

Jamar: Ne-yo was very adamant

about conveying the correct
emotion with this song.

I can do that.

After everything I've been through,

I can draw on being H.I.V.-positive.

I can draw on all these things
to sing my heart out.

Adam: For you, Jamie, I felt like you
were in your zone and it was great,

but once it turned into one
of these big power ballads,

I felt like maybe you lost
your handle a little bit.

I thought that you, Jamar... you owned it.

You owned that whole stage.

I think Cee Lo was the only one
that turned around for you.

And so I would really say

that there might be three people
that lose this round,

and it's myself, Christina, and Blake

for not picking you

because you are ridiculously,
ridiculously good.

You're gonna go real far.
And I feel like an idiot.

I've never seen anything quite

Jamie, you don't need
to be making sandwiches

when you have such a unique
and interesting voice.

You really have a beautiful tone.

But once we hit those chords,

it just wasn't a good fit
for you, vocally, as your style.

Man, Jamar, on the very last
note that you hit,

you held it out, and you have something

that every great singer has,

and that's that big singer's vein

right out the side of your neck.

It was just popping out,
and I was like, "yes!"

And so you had me with that one.

So, my pick would be Jamar.

Cee lo, the final decision is yours.

Give me some thoughts first.

It's very difficult for me, guys.

I care for both of you guys, you know?

I just felt like my man Jamie
was just so nervous,

and I want to give you the confidence.

I want you to be reassured

that I'm with you and I'm in your corner.

And I wanted, you know,

to give you both an equal
opportunity to really showcase,

you know, your strong singing
abilities, the both of you.
