It was early in 2010,
and my marriage was crumbling.

and we've recently been able
to focus on it more...

My name is Tyler Lillestol.
I am 23 years old, and I'm
from Riverside, California.
I have two big passions in my life...
one of them being singing
and the other being baseball.
I started playing baseball
when I was 4 years old
on a T-ball team.
I ended up going to
a Christian college in Virginia.
There was a couple years there
where that's all I did was baseball.
But I figured out that, you
know, baseball wasn't for me,
and I wasn't gonna have a future
with that.
That's when I made that decision
to start pursuing my singing career.
I like to incorporate music
and baseball at the same time
and have recently got the opportunity
to sing at Dodger Stadium.

- College.
I chose singing,
and it's a little more pressure,

and that's how I learned how to sing.
I do everything by ear,

I would say just choose
more moments and opportunities.

you could have had,
you know, more ability,
since I heard later on
you could do those long notes
and sustain them very well
and hold them out
with good vibrato at the end.

I've had a ton of opportunities.
At 10 years old, I did
get signed to Sony records.
And when I was about 18, I got
signed to an independent label,
and we did a Latin album.

When I first heard myself on the radio,
I thought, "I made it, and I'm on my way."
But record labels
are really different now.
And they shelved me for a while.
So now I'm just back at square one.
"The voice" is giving
struggling artists like me
an opportunity... another opportunity.
It was really hard
when things started going down
with the label,
and my dad lost his job at the same time.
We lost our house,
and we all had to pack our bags
and move back to San Diego.

And my life now is
I'm with my sons during the day,
and then I go play music at night.

Nicholas: But life
wasn't always a blessing.
After college, I joined
The Outlaw Country Band.
And we were definitely known
for our drinking abilities.
I was just partying and partying
and drinking and drinking.
I just was lost
and just kind of self-medicated
with booze.
Due to the drinking,
I started gaining weight.
Before I even knew it, I was 300 pounds.
That was probably my lowest
period of my life thus far.
I met a light, and she was my
gal, and her name was Christa.
Have fun.
And she was coming out
of a darkness herself,
and we picked each other up,
and we healed each other.
Good luck, babe.
And out of that, we made a son.
Easy, buddy. Kiss.
And that woke me up to a life
that, like, I feel
I'm supposed to be doing.
So I shed the weight, I shed the booze.
And before I knew it, I could
hear my voice and my song.
For me, music is so important
because it's been how I deal with life,
and I can turn my pain and my struggle
into a gift that heals people.

because I feel my message
of healing and hope
can reach a larger audience.

I currently attend Laguardia High School
For Music And Performing Arts.
Laguardia High School is best known
for it being the "Fame" school,
like the movie "Fame."
In school, we do perform every single day.
And it's got your normal academics
but also your music classes
incorporated, as well.

The teachers here push us
pretty hard musically.
I mean, their goal is to kind of
prepare you for the real world.

I really want to be able
to make a team on "The Voice."
I think that'll be a very,
very cool accomplishment.

Avery: I grew up in a family of dancers.
My brothers dance,
and then my uncle dances.
So it was like...
it was kind of in the family.
Dancing... that's what I wanted to do.
It wasn't singing.
Singing... it kind of came
into play as, you know,
me being in my room and keeping to myself.
And I didn't want anybody to know
'cause I didn't think
I was that good, you know?
My father put his ear to the door
and would listen to me sing.
And he was like, "you're not a dancer."
"You are a singer."
- My dad.
- Hello, sir.
When did you see Avery was first
really talented in singing?
I saw it when he was 7.
Just to hear him sing in the
background, it was like, "wow."
Avery: Style-wise, I'd say I'm in the mix
between Stevie Wonder, Chris Brown, Usher.
After a while, it was just like, you know,
I felt as if there's a gift.
So, you know what? Let me just work on it.
The fact that the coaches
will help me on my voice
is perfect for me.
