Blake: Just the thought
of not knowing what's out there

and what's next...
those footsteps that you hear...

just that little moment

right before somebody starts to sing,

is easily my favorite moment
of being on "The Voice."

And then when I hear something
I like and hit that button...

Daly: Welcome to "The Voice"

where the blind auditions
are in full swing...

♪ Ahhh! ♪

What's your name?!

Daly: ...As our award-winning
superstar coaches

pick artists to work with
and personally develop

based on voice alone.

Christina: We're artists ourselves.

We care about the talent
up there on that stage,

and we're invested.

Daly: Here's where the teams of 16 stand.

Adam and Christina
have each scored 11 artists.

Christina: The team is very pop-driven.

It's just what I'm gravitating
towards this season.

Adam: I have a great, diverse bunch
of people who are all very unique.

That's a hugely important thing.

Daly: Cee Lo has 10...

Cee Lo: My team is already really solid.

The next person that I'm looking for

has to be better than the best.

Daly: ...While Blake
has been more selective,

picking seven singers for his team.

Blake: I just want to look
for somebody that I hear and go,

"this person's a star."

Daly: Tonight...

Oh, my God, are you kidding me?!

Daly: With more than half the spots taken,

the artists will put everything
on the line.

Dez: "The Voice"
is an unbelievable opportunity

Jeffrey: I have no backup plan.

I am not looking forward

to going back home and parking cars.

Jordan: I had a great career
as a teen pop star,

but there was always something missing,

and I always said it was the coaches.

Daly: And it's the coaches
who will fight hard

for the singers they want.

Man, he wants it, and I want you.

I'm secure enough

is set to begin
as our coaches take their seats

and await our first artist of the day.


Michelle Brooks-Thompson

balances her busy family life
with dreams of being a singer.

Our lives are pretty hectic.

There you go.

But we really work together
to try to manage out my singing,

plus working full time at the bank.

All right.

You know, I'll sing a little note

at my desk for customers.

You know, I'll say,

"if you want to open an account,
I'll sing for you,"

and my boss is like,
"you have this talent."

"You need to go pursue it."

Like, "don't stay here."

"We love you, but we want you to go."

I want it so bad for you that,
if I have to,

I might have to run down there

and turn somebody's chair around.
[ Laughs ]

When I my husband, David,

he was trying to get into
the NFL as a football player.

We moved to St. Louis
shortly after we were married

so that he could get a try
at playing in the NFL

for the St. Louis Rams.

When my husband made the team,

he really felt like all
of his hard work had paid off,

but before he ever got to play
his first game in the season,

we received a letter
that said he had been released.

- How tough was that for you?
David: - It was hard, man.

Being so close.

Yeah, I thought everything was
getting ready to go through,

and I was feeling good about myself.

I felt like I had a great camp.

Right.

And then, to get the news,
it was crushing.

It was hard for him

to really adjust to the fact
that his dream was taken back.

It's painful.

This is it, guys.

David: Here we go.

Mommy's getting ready to sing.

Right now in my life,
I feel a lot like my husband did

because now it's
as if I'm trying out for a team.

- Love you, babe.
- We did it.

You got it.

- Love you.
- Go do it.

It's very scary because I saw
what happened to him in the NFL,

and it'll be disappointing

to know that both of our dreams
were shot down.

almost, like, things I can't do.

And you have this ability to do something

that seems almost supernatural to me,

and, you know, I would be

very blessed and very honored
to work with you.

I was waiting for a crack
or a flaw or, you know...

I mean, this is the third season, so I...

you know, I got to really choose
my team carefully,

and I want to make sure
there's lots of versatility.

I was having so much fun with you.

I was moving over the button,
and I was like,

"you know, I'd have to be
an idiot at this point"

"not to see what's going on
behind my chair."

Diego: My name is Diego Val.

I'm 25.

I'm originally from Peru,
and I live in Miami.

- How you doing, Diego?
- What's up, brother?

- Welcome.
- Thank you so much.

- It's good to have you on the show, man.
- Thank you, man. Pleasure to meet you.

- Who do you have here?
- My mother.

- Hi. How are you? I'm Carson.
- Doesn't speak a word of English.

Nice to see you. Pleasure.

Tell me a little bit about your history.

I hear you had a rough time
when you were a kid.

Just something happened to me at age 8.

I went through a disease

- that I was not gonna be able to walk
anymore. - No kidding.

I got this disease when I was 8 years old

that's called perthes.

What it does is disintegrate your hip bone

till you can't walk anymore.

I was hospitalized.

I had crutches for four years,
and, through this whole time,

I was in bed for more
than a year and a half,

and that's when my grandmother
gave me my first guitar.

It's funny how, when there's
tragedy in your life,

- that sometimes is your entry point
into music. - Yeah.

I had to. I didn't really have much
people that talked to me, really.

- So I spent most of my time in my room.
- Right.

Right.

What I experienced as a child

was definitely something hard
to deal with,

and I know what it feels like

to be in a hospital and just be that kid.

So I want to give back.

I'm actually part of a non-profit

called Musicians On Call.

♪ Give me just a minute ♪

I sing for kids.

I sing for about 60 patients in one day...

kids with cancer...

and I believe that music is something

that can make anybody smile.

It can give anybody a moment of peace.

So that's the way that I, in a way,

feel that I can give back to these kids

and just show my support.

I was there once. I'm here now.

Yay!

Okay?

Life is not easy.

I've been through a lot in my life.

It's definitely gotten me to this moment.

Hopefully, the coaches here...

someone has passion
for his music and for what I do.

You know, and when I was
that boy, I had a dream,

and I'm fighting for it, you know?

That dream is gonna come true right now.

whose life was changed by music.

My name is Lauren Brooke.

I'm 24 years old,
and I'm from Pawling, New York.

I have been singing
since I was 10 years old

in my kitchen or in my closet,
'cause I was very shy.

[ Chuckles ]
Anywhere that echoed.

Kick some a*s.

When Lauren was a little girl,
I actually built her a stage

in the middle of the living room,

and now she can go on a big stage.

[ Laughter ]

A much bigger stage.

- Hi Lauren. How are you?
- How are you?

Welcome to the show.
Good to have you guys.

Tell me a little bit
about your background.

What got you into music?

Well, growing up,
I had a learning disability.

I had dyslexia in school.

- Oh, really?
- Yeah.

- How tough was that for you?
- It was really hard.

It was more, like, embarrassing.

Kind of like kept to myself a little bit.

Growing up with dyslexia,

I just kind of jumbled words
and had to get things read to me

because nothing really made sense to me.

I was really self-conscious growing up,

and I think that's why,
when I first started singing,

I didn't really show people
that because I was afraid that,

you know, that was just something else

that I wasn't going to be good at.

And what does this shot on "The Voice,"

you know, mean for you?

I had an uncle who passed away

who also grew up
with a learning disability, too.

- Mm-hmm.
- So he was a huge inspiration for me.

So I feel like I'm here for me,

but I'm here for him, too, so...

My uncle passed four years ago
in his sleep.

[ Voice breaking ]
He was my biggest fan.

At 46 years old, it was just...

um... just really unexpected and horrible.

He was so inspiring because he
ended up owning his own business

and, even to the day he passed away,

could hardly read and write.

He told me... encouraged me

to start writing poems and writing lyrics.

Oh, interesting.

And that's kind of how I got into writing.

- Did that help with the dyslexia?
- Totally.

It was like my little escape.

Right.

That just got me
even more involved with music.

[ Voice breaking ] I don't think
that I would ever have the courage

to do anything like this
if I didn't know that about him.

[ Normal voice ]
I'm really nervous

about the blind auditions

because I moved to Nashville
to do country music,

so having Blake there
is, like, surreal and crazy,

and it'll be awesome
just to be able to say hi.

This performance is kind of like

the cherry on top of everything
that I've done,

and I can kind of stand up

for everybody who's had problems in school

and show that you can do
whatever you want to do

if you just believe in yourself.

I love country music,

Adam: There were some pitchy things,

and the pitchy thing does get to you,

and it does affect us

when we're deciding
whether to push that thing,

and so that was it for me, but, I mean,

it was a strong presence, too,
as a vocalist.

Cee Lo: - Yeah.

I heard the greatness in your voice.

Thank you.

I mean, it's a really cool sound,

but the pitch things are what happened,

and you're a good enough singer
with a good enough ear,

when see this back on television,

you'll go, "oh, okay. I can fix that,"

because you can fix that, easy.

Yeah, everything you did today
I thought was fixable,

and I loved your raspiness that you had

-on your high end.
- Thank you.

So you have something
really special there,

so, you know, I definitely don't
want any of this to sway you.

Just a little bit of finesse and practice,

and you're there.

Suzanna: I teach music for a living.

Suzanna: I really, really enjoy

seeing kind of the magic
that music can bring out

of particularly young kids.

Sometimes, you'll have
a really shy student.

And then, by the third lesson,

you see something really beautiful

coming out of them,

and they're becoming very outgoing,

and that's what music can do to people.

Singing is the freest expression
for me, personally,

of my soul, who I am,
my being on this earth.

I want to be on "The Voice"

as sort of a tribute to my students,

just saying, "hey, go follow your dream."

I need this to happen.

[ Humming ]

I feel like I've worked my butt off,

and I've educated myself in music

and then educated other people in music,

so I've put in my time.

I feel like it's time
for me to kind of shine.

My name is Suzanna Choffel.

Almost sounded
a little bit like Stevie Nicks.

Do you mean to,
or is that your natural voice?

It's kind of my natural voice,

but I did grow up listening
to Stevie, Fleetwood Mac.

Christina: I loved kind of
the more subtle approach.

I think, when I heard you,

I don't know, I felt like
Adam and Blake's names

were all over this performance.

Blake: It did because it
had... you did a rock song

and, in my opinion,

with a little bit
of a country flair to it.

[ Laughs ]

I'm from Texas, so...
[ Laughs ]

Adam: I did turn...

I'm trying to actually ask

I'm 22 years old, and I'm
from Shreveport, Louisiana.

I was at Yale University.

I was playing on the football team,

dropped out, and came out to California

to see if this thing could work.

You may remember me from last year.

It was an amazing experience...

probably the best 90 seconds of my life.

But at the end of the song,
I saw that nobody turned around.

Christina seemed particularly upset

that she didn't pick me.

And I got this close to pressing my button

at a certain point,
and, for whatever reason,

I don't know, I think I got nervous.

Even though no one turned around,

I don't regret the decision

of leaving school
and coming out to California

'cause it forced me to focus
on what I love... music.

I'm V.J. I am 25 years old.

I'm from Bellflower, California,

and I teach music at a conservatory.

I've been singing ever since I was 3.

My mom and dad,

they handed me
a microphone and a keyboard,

and I was hooked ever since then.

I actually graduated with a degree

in choral vocal music
and jazz-studies performance.

Now I teach
at the Silverlake Conservatory.

As you get down there,
like, nice and easy.

It's just like speaking.

and I love giving all that I have to them.

But sometimes, I'm in lessons,

You know, I want to be
out there performing

and walking the walk and talking the talk.

So I'm kind of at crossroads
in my life right now,

and I'm here at "The Voice"
because I want to take

the next step from being a teacher

to becoming a full-fledged performer.

I'm singing Cee Lo's song,
so I hope I do it justice.

For my blind audition,

I'm singing "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green.

He has swag. You know what I mean?

And it's just like, "I want that swag."

I want him to teach me all of that.

I'm a huge fan of his music.

I've been writing since I was 13.

It's a way to tell the world
your story in a certain way.

I did stop going to college.

I starting touring a lot with
the bands I'm in in New Orleans,

and I felt like
that was more important to me

to do it for a living

and be engaged in it all the time, 24/7.

So, New Orleans, huh?

Born and raised.

Hurricane Katrina... you were there?

Yeah, we evacuated a day or two before.

What was that like?

It was scary.

We all thought we were going back,

but we didn't for a long time.

It's been seven years
since hurricane Katrina hit.

It was the most traumatic thing
I had ever experienced.

Everything was torn apart.

It was chaos. It was complete chaos.

What was it like when you
first came back to the house?

- Devastating.
- Yeah.

We lost our house entirely.

We weren't able to salvage anything.

[ Voice breaking ]
I never talk about it,

so it's really tough.

[ Sniffles ]

Oh, look at the piano.

Oh, my God.

To describe losing
everything you've ever had...

it was extremely heartbreaking,

but a lot of people lost their families,

and I'm lucky to have mine.

This is it!
[ Giggles ]

You're gonna be great.

After hurricane Katrina,
music was the true therapy

in going through what I went through.

It allowed me to write about
what I was feeling.

It allowed me to vent.

[ Breathes deeply ]

When I think of what we've gone through,

I think of not just myself,
but as a community, as a whole.

When I go out on that stage,
it's gonna be all for my city.

Yeah, we moved to Indianapolis.

Only been there for a year.

Well, I wanted him

to go somewhere where it was a lot safer.

Things are starting to get

a little rough in Chicago for him.

While I was in high school in Chicago,

a lot of violence came in, like,

when guys see us in front of
our school just chilling...

like, the gangbangers...

they would think that
we were a g*ng, as well.

So they'd be like,
"man, what you doing over here?"

And then we'd have to fight.
It was Chicago.

That's how they deal
with things... they fight.

My mom was worried about my safety,

and she ended up pulling me out of school

and then taking me to Indianapolis.

As a mom, you have to do whatever it takes

to keep your child safe.

I am very happy that my mom
took me out of that situation.

She guides me through everything...

like, everything that
you see here is because of her.

I put a lot of pressure on myself

to make it for me and my mom.

We just need to make it.

We need to have a better life,

and I feel like this opportunity

can help me help my mom
and the rest of my family.

It helps me pay the bills

but still lets me
play music whenever I want to.

I do a lot of shameless self-promoting.

Being Nashville, you know,

people are in the music industry a lot,

and so I'll take one of my CDs

and throw it in the back of the car,

hoping that he'll see it and then hear me

I got my call from Disney.

I got flown out to Hollywood,

sang for four suits in front of me,

and I got a record deal
with Disney that day.

I went on tour with The Cheetah Girls,

Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens,

and I've had two songs
on the Billboard charts,

and I feel blessed.

Well, I left my record label a year ago.

Why?

I was 20 and I wanted to make
more mature music.
