I'm 29 years old,
And i'm from austin, texas.
I'm a full-time musician.
That's how i pay all my bills.
But i'd love to be a musician
On a grander scale.
Growing up, it was just me
And my mother and my brother.
My mother was a single parent,
And my uncle
Was a huge influence on me.

My uncle john actually
Taught me how to play.
How old were you?
Gosh, i was about 10 years old.
Kind of taught him
The basics of rock 'n' roll.

He got a lot better
A few years down the road
When he went into the service.
When did you
Go in the service? i was 18 when i joined, actually.

My best friend asked me
What i was doing with my life.
And i had no idea.
I didn't want to go to school.
And he said that
He was joining the air force.
We actually have
A few pictures.
And as soon as i went in,
We went to w*r.
Within six months, i was already
Deployed into the middle east.
I think it was like 127
When we were out there.
No kidding.
My position
In the air force --
I was security forces, which is
Military police officer.
I was an 18-year-old kid,
And when i went over there,
My eyes
Were opened to the world.
I saw a lot
Of bad stuff happen.
I don't know
How to explain that.
I really don't talk about it
Too much.
It's just kind of locked away
In a time far, far away.
Any time that i feel stressed
Out in my life or anything,
I just pick up the guitar
And try to write a song.
And of course, sitting
Around, you know, playing for everybody.
That guitar is bringing
Such a great feeling
To people's hearts, you know --
You had a tough time.
It was tough,
And music's always been there.
I left the air force
In december of '06,
And i knew that i wanted to
Pursue music as a career.
Austin, texas,
Is where i play now.
The city council, they try to
Give back to the community
By finding musicians
That represent the city.
And i have received my own day
From the mayor of austin.
January 26, 2012,
Was proclaimed jonny gray day.
I love austin.
I feel like i've played
Everywhere
That i can play there.

Give me the opportunities
To go and do
All those things i've dreamt of.
The coach i would like to

While i was deployed,

And they think of reggae music.
But we have some of the
Most amazing soul singers here
And gospel singers here.
And it's just
A huge melting pot.
I grew up
In a very multi-racial home
To parents who were musicians.
My father is
Of chinese and cherokee descent,
And my mother is
Of english and black descent.
So, i got a little bit of
Everything in here.
Growing up in jamaica,
The first music
I ever heard was reggae,
But when i was about 11 or 12,
I moved to england,
And i started hearing stuff like
System of a down and papa roach.
Rock music, for some reason,
Had this effect on me.
It was such
An important escape for me.
And then, the minute
I finished high school,
I was like, you know,
I'm gonna go home
And start singing in jamaica.

This amazing opportunity
To go on tour

And that was like my university.
