I'm 20 years old. I'm from phoenixville, pennsylvania.
This is my second time auditioning for "The voice."
Last time, I sang "Teenage dream" By katy perry
Because I like switching up music.
It gives a different spin on things.
But it just wasn't the best song for a blind audition,
In my opinion.
I have last season's performance,
And I want to take a look at it with you, all right?

I didn't play my guitar, and then just, you know,

It just wasn't how I normally perform.

As much for, like, a live type of thing like this.
I think it's more a matter of figuring your voice out
To where you know where you're comfortable.

And that's what I've really been working on
The past couple months.
Phoenixville is kind of a small town.
It's not really the big music scene l.A. Or new york is.
But I've been playing gigs three or four times a week,
And I also picked up vocal lessons,
Which seemed to really help.
I'm so proud of matt,
Just the fact that he hasn't given up
And that he's just more determined to make it this year.
I can't imagine matt doing anything else.
Since he was little, he just was always singing.
I want to rock 'n' roll all night
and party every day I've been singing since I was 3.
I when I was in fifth grade, I joined choir.
And then, when I was in middle school,
I started listening to, like, rock 'n' roll,
And I taught myself how to play guitar.
My only job has been music, other than working
At a sandwich shop in high school,
Which I would not like to go back to.
It would mean a lot to me
To prove that I can accomplish this.
I see myself as a singer/songwriter rock artist.
So this time around, I'm gonna be playing my guitar.
The song that I have this year, "Have a little faith in me,"
Definitely shows who I am.
I admire all four coaches.
Everything that I want to accomplish,
They have done it before, and they could show me
Everything that you need to do to get there.
I know what it means to not get a chair turned around,

My voice is raw rock/punk, super, le, energetic.
I just want to do it already.

I grew up basically out of the womb into, like,
A family of musicians.
My dad is emilio navaira. He's a tejano singer.
Tejano music is a tex-mex genre
That consists of spanish-speaking music.
My dad and selena have been credited
For bringing tejano music to the mainstream.
He's charted on billboard, latin and country charts,
And he's won two grammys.
At a very young age, I was exposed to live performance,
And obviously he's the biggest influence, you know,
Musically in my life.
He plays guitar. He sings beautiful.
And I'm proud of him.
And I'm excited to see him sing.
Growing up around tejano music,
I definitely have a respect for it.
But I'm my own style, man. I'm -- I'm a rocker at heart.
When I was 11, me and my brother started writing songs.
Now it's formed into this band called ready revolution,
Which I'm very proud of.
We've done two self-funded tours,
And we released everything ourselves,
Produced everything ourselves.
My dad, being who he is, tejano superstar,
I could have easily, I think, taken that route.
But I just feel like it's my turn now to do some,
You know, I could have easily, I think, big things on my own.

I am 23 years old, and I am from wharton, texas.
How'd you get into music?
Being in the church all the time
From Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday.
That's really kind of -- that's a lot of time at church.
Definitely. And my mom's a minister, so...
When did you know it was something
That maybe you wanted to take more serious
And even maybe out of church?
I actually did my first public performance
When I was 7 years old. Wow.
And then from there, my mom was getting requests
To have me come and, you know, do weddings or things like that.
When I was 11, I actually recorded my very first album.
My mom hired some producers
And just had me in the studio and arranging songs.
We would sell copies of them out of the trunk.
That's what got me becoming a recording artist, in a sense.
Once I turned 18, I felt like I hadn't had
That breakthrough that I wanted into the industry.
I'd kind of gotten burned out.
So I decided to become a leasing agent
At an apartment complex.
I didn't really pursue music anymore.
Sitting behind a desk, doing paperwork,
I kind of knew in the back of my mind
Music was something that I was really born to do,
So now I'm here.
Gospel music is definitely my foundation,
But not exactly the direction that I want to go.
I would want, you know, a broader audience.
If I could work with one of the coaches,
I would learn how to connect with different audiences
Across the board.
My music is something
That I like to share with the world,

My name is brandon chase.
I'm 20 years old, and I'm from arlington, texas.
I'm a very driven person,
And music is obviously my passion.
That's why I'm here.
Tell me a little bit about your music career thus far.
I started music, fell in love with it.
I knew that's what I wanted to do
And basically tested out of my junior and senior year.
That's insane. What about college?
I graduated college at 17.
You've advanced your whole life for this.
Yeah. You did high school early, college early.
And are you sure you want to be a musician?
You're highly overqualified for this position.
After graduating college, I packed up my bags,
Took a trip down to nashville just to get out there
And to soak up the experience of country music.
I play at as many venues as I can,
But because I'm an unknown artist,
You don't really get paid much, if anything.
The main thing that I want my music to do to people
Is to show them that there -- there's more to life.
Brandon has excelled,
And we are thankful that god took care of him.
Two days after he was born, he started bleeding internally,
And we had to rush him back to the hospital.
You're kidding me.
And he was put in intensive care,
And he quit breathing on us 64 times.
Wow.
Doctors told my parents,
"You should probably expect the worst."
My mom's holdi me ngere,
And she said the life was just leaving my body.
She went to the lord and said, "I'm not gonna have this."
About a month and a half later, I was off the machines,
And I was breathing on my own.
I'm very thankful that god healed him,
And I'm very thankful that god gave him music.
I can't even begin to imagine
What my parents went through with me as a baby.
They were so close to losing me.
I hope that I'm making them proud in every way.
I believe in destiny 100%.
"The voice" Is such a special opportunity.
It's not one that everybody gets,

My name is grey. I'm 25. I'm from jacksonville, florida.
I have been singing since I could talk.
I grew up singing country.
My brother and I used to play all the time together.
He would sit there and play guitar,
And I'd pretend to be singing into, like, a vacuum cleaner.
Coming out of high school,
I went to berklee college of music,
And I graduated last may.
Right now I'm working with a wedding band.
I love it, but this isn't what I want to do
For the rest of my life.
You keep doing the same things over and over,
And that dream seems further and further away.

I work at anthropologie in boston.
Working in retail and juggling

My love and respect for the latin culture.

Once I got to college,
I started to really see myself as a musician
And when I started to perform more in public.

And "The voice" Is an opportunity of a lifetime

My name is brian pounds. I'm 24 years old.
I'm a full soul singer/songwriter
From austin, texas, and I'm a full-time musician.
Growing up, my family was very athletic.
My brother played baseball. My dad was a football player.
My mom was an all-state basketball player.
And so I wanted to be a profsiones baseball player.
He was a very good pitcher,
And right before his senior year, he said,
"I really want to concentrate on playing the guitar."
That really was an eye-opener for us.
My brother had this guitar he just kept,
You know, in his room,
And then I just ended up learning two songs,
And then I learned three songs.
It kind of captivated me.
After high school, I quit my job
Where I was selling office supplies door to door.
I started working the bars. I played restaurants.
I started writing every day.
I'd never been so happy to be so broke.
But when gigs aren't rolling in and you're not quite sure
Where that money's gonna come from
And you're sitting over a pile of noodles
That you can barely afford,
You definitely have those moments of self-doubt.
I've pretty much given up
Most of the opportunities in my life
To do this for a living.
To me, "The voice" Is like the equalizer.

In 2000, I enlisted in the army.
I did a tour in iraq.
In November of '07, we were on a convoy mission
And ended up running over an I.E.D.,
Improvised expl*sive device.
It was so hot and was so powerful,
It actually welded the door shut on the truck.
Just from the sound alone,
I got a pretty severe concussion from it.
I ended up losing about 80% hearing loss in my right ear.
Coming home, it took me a little while
To get back into the whole music thing
'cause it was a transition, you know,
Not being able to hear out of my ear.
But that was just something that drove me more
To just, you know, be better.
