I'm from louisa, kentucky,
- And I'm currently
- a sophomore in high school.
My passion all my life
Has been singing,
- But I never really believed
- in myself enough.
Roy: we thought
She was extremely gifted,
But we had a hard time
Getting her to come out
Of her shell and sing
Where other people
Could hear her voice.
When did you start really
Singing out and about?
Well, my mom and my dad
Convinced me to put youtube
videos up on the internet.

- were convincing her?
- Yeah.
- Absolutely.
- Daly: oh, usually, - it's
the other way around. Yeah.

The response I got from the
youtube videos was overwhelming.
It definitely
Boosted my self-confidence.

- Yes, I actually just started
- performing out of places
Last year, so...
Wow, that's kind of new,

I performed
For "tunes for tots"
That helps the make-a-wish
Foundation about eight times.
Helping this foundation
Is really personal to me because
I lost one of my best friends,
Xavier, on january 3, 2012.
He had ewing's sarcoma cancer,
And he got his wish
To go on a cruise
With his little sister
And his mom and dad.
I didn't think it was fair
That somebody that good
And somebody that strong
- Had to go through
- what he went through.
I'm definitely doing it
For him.
- And I feel like
- he's watching over me, you know,
And I have him right here
In my heart.
I'm proud of kelsie
For -- for being somebody
- That wants to make a difference
- and help others.

Who hopes her bold style catches

- my name is kimberly nichole.
I am 32 years old,
And I live in new york.
- People call me
- the rock ballerina
Because I have custom-made tutus
I wear onstage.
Right now, I perform at
The very exclusive, private club
In new york called the box.
It's like a modern-day studio 54
Meets moulin rouge.
I'm the host of the show, and I
Sing there five nights a week.
Seeing her emcee,
She was amazing.
- Daniel: I never thought
- she had it in her.
I thought she was gonna be
The businesswoman of the family.
And now she's the star
Of the family.
After high school, I kind of
Put music on the back burner.
- I wanted to be the first
- college-educated person
In my family,
So I went to spelman college
And got a degree in economics.
After college, I had a job
Doing human resources
In the fashion industry.
- But I just knew
- I wasn't supposed to be there.
- I started doing
- a lot of open mikes,
- Like, singing anywhere
- I could sing.
- You know, just really
- trying to build a buzz.
And the more I was able
To foster my passion at night,
- It was like a started becoming
- almost bitter
Towards having to sit at a desk.
- And so I left corporate america
- permanently.
I haven't been back since.
- What's frustrating
- about your grind right now
In new york city?
- New york is a little bit
- overpopulated with musicians.
- And then you can kind of
- feel like
- You're just
- going around in circles,
- Performing at the same spots
- and really not getting anywhere
As fast-paced
As you would like to.
For my blind audition,
I will be singing

I have a very edgy,
Rock-'n'-roll, blues-type voice,
So it really represents
The type of artist I am.
I'm at the position in my life
Where I need this opportunity
To get advice from artists

Where the artists nervously

- if 20-year-old michael leier
From fargo, north dakota,
- Has what it takes
- to make a team.
Michael:
Fargo is nothing like the movie
or the television series.
- And there are very few people
- that I know personally
That actually have
That "don't you know" accent.
When I was 12 years old,
I taught myself how to play
Guitar by listening to music
And then trying to get it
As close to the recordings
As I possibly could.
When I was 16 years old,
- I started a band with a couple
- of my buddies from school.
Two weeks later,
We were playing downtown fargo.
Mark:
One thing led to another,
- And soon they were playing
- in the bars.
We did sort of chaperone them
All the way through.
- Grant:
- people would look at us.
- You know, "these guys definitely
- aren't old enough to drink."
- By the time
- we started playing,
- They were
- usually pretty shocked.
You felt pretty cool talking
About it to your friends.
They spent their weekend bagging
Groceries or waiting tables,
And you were playing
Rock 'n' roll at a bar.

After high school,
- All of my bandmates
- kind of went separate ways.
And so, I decided to be
A pre-med student.
Tried it out for a year,
And it's not something
- I'm nearly as passionate
- about as music.
Now I'm at a crossroads --
Go back to school
Or try to chase my dream.
Back home,
There's not a lot of musical
Opportunities waiting for me.
So to have someone
That knows the industry
To guide me musically,
That's very valuable.
- I've got a lot
- riding on this performance.

- But I don't know what life was
- before music.
- My parents
- were both wedding singers,
So music was a very big part
Of my life.
We put her up on the stage
At church and everywhere else,
And she liked performing
Any time, anywhere.
My first memory
Performing out
- Was a contest
- I did when I was 11.
- It was
- the colgate country showdown.
And I just was like,
"Ooh, I love this, and I want
To do it all the time."
I moved to nashville in 2013.
And I just jumped
Straight into it.
I had the opportunity to intern
At a really big label in town.
And it was kind of like
A godsend because
There was nothing I wanted more
Than to understand the business
- That I was
- about to throw myself into.
I've played a lot of smaller
Shows, you and a guitar.
- I guess music is a job.
- It just doesn't pay the bills.
[ Laughs ]
- You do have to pick up odd jobs
- here and there
Just because you're like,
- "I have to eat
- more than ramen noodles."
[ Laughs ]
You know? And so, I'm a nanny,
A substitute teacher.
I'm actually
A little bit of a nerd.
I really like school.
- I mean, nobody likes tests.
- That's not real.
But it's like, the knowledge
Part, I always really liked.
And so, it's been really neat
And so rewarding.
Sometimes when I'm
Teaching, the kids, they
found out I'm a singer.
And then they're like, "oh,
Miss hannah, sing us a song."
And so, it's actually
Really cute.
I actually also work for my dad
As a part-time
Window-and-door salesman.
I'm not super knowledgeable.
- It's more like, "hey, dad.
- Tell me about this door.
- Can you give me the, like,
- lowdown on what I need to know?"
[ Laughs ] but I try.
As much as I love the work,
It would be nice to be able to
Actually make music a career.
Being able to work
With any of these coaches,
It would just be life-altering.
I could step back
From those jobs and say,
- "You know what?
- Music is the focus.
"I'll do the work.
All you got to do
Is give me a stage to stand on."

In new orleans for raw artists.
That was a huge deal.
My love of music really started
In 7th grade
When my teacher, miss fadreen,
Would give me, like, solo songs
That I would have to sing.
- And I was so not about it
- in the beginning.
- But she just
- kept encouraging me.
- And then I started
- really enjoying it.
- To have that kind of support,
- I mean,
- It's the greatest feeling
- in the world.

A 23-year-old singer
From san francisco, california.
- Sonic: - growing up in san
francisco has definitely helped
- Open up my mind
- to different music and style.
- I'm so excited.

- My mom brought me up
- on a lot of soulful artists
Like etta james, billie holiday,
Michael jackson,
So it's definitely been
An influence on my voice.
When I was 14,
I got signed to a label.
I started doing, like,
A lot of mini tours.
- It was really exciting, but it
- was also really overwhelming.
I kind of had an image
That was made up for me,
A little more diva-like.
It definitely wasn't who I am.
After four years with the label,
The album never came out.
It put me in a low place.
- It took a while to build back up
- and be like,
"I'm ready to --
To do this again."
So, after parting ways
With my label, I joined a band.
And for the past five years,
I've been rocking with them.
Outside of music,
I do freelance makeup
And I also jewelry design.
I did some of the pieces
That I'm wearing
- Like my earrings and
- my little nose chain going on.
How long you been singing?
- Like, pursuing it
- since I was 10.
- I've been working at it
- ever since then.

- the hardest challenges for you
In your pursuit of music?
When I was around 6 or 7,
- I discovered that I was deaf
- in my right ear, completely.

- what happened?
We don't really know.
- We've seen

- And never really
- got any, like, clear answers.
No kidding. That must have been
Terrifying for you.
Connie: it was.
We taught her to not use it as a
Disability but as an advantage.
I'm very proud of her.

ear has definitely changed my life.
I don't hear music
How other musicians do.
- People will be on the right side
- of me saying something,
And I won't hear them.
It's just completely gone.
But I'd never let it
Really take over my life.
It made me who I am.

To be able to be mentored

- growing up in new orleans,
Music is always playing,
No matter where I go.
We have jazz
And heritage festival,
Which I've gone to since I came
Out of my mother's stomach.
And I've seen
So many inspiring performances.
I began to discover
Different styles,
So I started off
With the classical training,
Musical theater, choir,
Classical, indie, jazz,
And blues.
Aside from singing, swimming
Has been a huge part of my life.
When I was 9, I started swimming
Competitively.
And it's taught me
That you have to work hard
For what you want to accomplish,
- And I feel like
- I can apply it to "the voice."
- You're gonna be awesome.
- Are you okay?
- Yeah,
- I'm just nervous.
Going into sixth grade,
My mom was diagnosed
With breast cancer.
I actually had a very calm
Reaction when I got the news
- Because she was so positive
- about it.
My dad's actually bald,
So they had a shaving party.

She was so cute.
She was like a little fighter.
In between
When I was diagnosed
And before I'd found out
The staging,
That was the scariest
Because you don't know
If you're gonna see her grow up.
She taught me that no matter
What happens in your life,
You can overcome it
And still be really strong.
Thankfully, my mom
Has since made a full recovery.
Breathe.
I will.
I love you.
I don't perform a lot,
So this is bigger
Than anything I've ever done.
The fact it's in front
Of four amazing coaches
Is terrifying.
But it's also such a blessing.
If I could turn a chair today,
It would just show me that what
I have is something special.

Jacob: my parents
Had my sister biologically,
But she was born with oxalosis,
Which is a genetic disease.
- She had three kidney transplants
- before she was 4.
So, my parents decided
- Not to have
- any more biological children,
So they adopted my sister,
And then five years after that,
They adopted me from birth.
Jacob
Has accomplished so much.
We're proud to call him our son
And our family.
I was in show choir
And musicals.
Singing was always my thing.
Now I'm just out of high school,
So being on "the voice"
Could be a very cool alternative
To college.
I want to pursue music,
But I don't know what I'm doing.

I loved to sing.

- with my mom.
I started 'cause I used to watch
Her cook in the kitchen.
But I always wanted to be
In show business,
So I moved to l.a.
In 1986,
I was hired to be the
Executive chef at the improv.
And I started singing.
I'd come out of the kitchen and
Sing in the dining room here.
It was really tough
On the owners,
- But I always wanted to be
- out there singing.

My mom works in finance,

But I've devoted most of my life
To musical education.
When I turned 11,
I was actively seeking
Middle schools
That provided music classes.
After middle school,
I went to laguardia arts,
The famed school in new york.
So, the bulk of my performances
Have been through school.
What are some of your classes?
Walk me through your curriculum.
Usually, we have two or so years
Of music theory,
Classical music history,
- And then
- we have private lessons.
- All the voice majors
- are generally in the opera, too,
- So we're always
- working on a new opera.
[ Singing operatically ]
As much as I have seen
- The benefit
- of being trained classically,
- I've always wanted to have
- a pop coach.
My heart's always been pulled
Toward contemporary music,
So having this opportunity to be
On "the voice" is incredible.

- What direction are you gonna go,
- and what are you gonna sing?

My time in formal music
Education is about to end.
